SILVERSTREAM SEX / FUNDS SCANDAL DAY 2.

A COMMENT FROM A READER ON KIRBY’S BIO

“Pat, the following is all taken from Dawn Eden Goldstein’s articles about Prior Kirby. Despite the Benedictine vow of stability he has been going from place to place. Did Meath diocese not do due diligence checks?

Dawn wrote:

Father Mark Daniel Kirby was born in Connecticut in 1952. He began his experience of religious life at the age of twenty in a traditional Benedictine monastery. At a certain point, however, he forsook that cloister in favor of a small monastic community that had nightly Eucharistic adoration, the Brothers of Jesus Crucified of Providence, Rhode Island.
Eventually the community was absorbed by the Cistercian Abbey of Notre Dame de Nazareth in Rougemont, Québec, and it was for that abbey that Kirby was ordained a priest on November 16, 1986.

At some point after ordination, Kirby suffered health issues as well as what he describes as “burnouts” that led him to modify his monastic observances. He writes, “This led to a prolonged absence from the abbey of my profession and, eventually, to my attachment to the Abbey of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme in Rome.”

“These were ‘desert years,’” Kirby adds, “full of uncertainties and trials.”

He taught for a brief time and was permitted to serve as chaplain to the nuns of the Monastery of the Glorious Cross in Branford, Connecticut where he could be close to friends and family.

Beginning a Benedictine Life in Tulsa
Late 2007 also saw Kirby enter into discussion with then-Bishop of Tulsa Edward Slattery, sharing his desire, as he would later put it, “to live my monastic vocation in daily Eucharistic adoration and reparation, while offering spiritual support to my brother priests.” The bishop responded in February 2008 with an invitation to live in the diocese, and in July of that year Kirby received permission from the Holy See to be released from the Cistercian order so as to incardinate into the Diocese of Tulsa and renew his monastic vows under Slattery’s authority.

Kirby’s renewal of his Benedictine vows under Bishop Slattery took place on April 2, 2009, in preparation for what would be, in his words, “the foundation of a monastery of diocesan right, dedicated to Eucharistic adoration and to the spiritual care of the clergy: the Monastery of Our Lady of the Cenacle.”

Although Father Mark Kirby enjoyed the support of Bishop Edward Slattery of the Diocese of Tulsa, the monk was unable to find a suitable property in the diocese for his nascent monastery. A new opportunity opened up in October 2011 when, having located a rent-to-buy property in the Diocese of Meath, Ireland, he received approbation from the local ordinary, Bishop Michael Smith, to found a monastery there.
Silverstream Priory in Stamullen, County Meath, had only one member besides Kirby when it opened in late February 2012, but that would soon change. By June 2014, it was reported that the monastery had “far too many young monks (plus interested young men) for their meager means.” In the meantime, Kirby’s friend and chief fundraiser David Craig worked to raise the funds so that the monks could purchase the property.”

MEATH PRIEST

A Meath priest contacted me yesterday to say, and I quote:

“The name of a certain Ann Corcoran of Dublin 4 in the Mid-Louth Independent article which one of the comments cites as one of four “sod turners” for the new monastic church (which has failed to materialize after nearly three years):

https://www.pressreader.com/ireland/mid-louth-independent/20180227/283162904086664

Mrs Corcoran is ex-wife to the late John Corcoran, founder of Paddy Power.

https://www.irishtimes.com/life-and-style/people/john-corcoran-obituary-successful-businessman-who-founded-paddy-power-1.3968471

Maybe it’s puritanical of me, but a monastic church being financed through gambling money, readily taken from poor people and gambling addicts, doesn’t seem entirely appropriate. I could be wrong”.

Apart from the priest’s comments – if the monastery is making a profit of some Euro 600,000 a year why has the church not materialised three years after the laying of the sod?

POPE FRANCIS DOCUMENT – REPRECUSSIONS FOR SILVERSTREAM ???

APOSTOLIC LETTER
ISSUED MOTU PROPRIO
BY THE SUPREME PONTIFF
FRANCIS

“VOS ESTIS LUX MUNDI”

GENERAL PROVISIONS

Art. 1 – Scope of application

§1. These norms apply to reports regarding clerics or members of Institutes of Consecrated Life or Societies of Apostolic Life and concerning:

a) delicts against the sixth commandment of the Decalogue consisting of:

i.        forcing someone, by violence or threat or through abuse of authority, to perform or submit to sexual acts;

PATS SUMMARY

The situation in Silverstream is out of hand and should never haven allowed to get this far.

Bishop Michael Smith has been more than careless in his oversight of this diocesan monastery.

The “founder” Mark Kirby has been a wandering and meandering monk- what canon law might call a “vagus”.

The spirituality of Silverstream seems to be a mixture of Tridentineism, alleged whispers from tabernacles and homoerotic ideation.

A million Euro a year has been going in there and it costs Euro 300,000 to run leaving an annual “profit” of Euro 700,000.

After years of fundraising no church has been built.

Someone mentioned there been thousands of euros in cash being kept in drawers.

It looks as if Charity Legislation has been ignored.

The Gardai are investigating sexual assaults and misappropriation of funds.

Older monks have been kissing younger ones on the head.

Silverstream needs to be dissolved and the monks given a choice of going to another monastery or back to the world.

Ordained monks should be given pastoral work in Meath.

Dom Kirby needs to retire permanently.

Silverstream has been one man’s fantasy.

A very costly fantasy in terms of human suffering and indeed euros.

Even the €300,000 annual expenditure seems excessive for such a small community with no staff wages to pay and food presumably bought in bulk. That’s nearly €6,000 a week!

How much more corruption, apparently of all stripes, by Roman Catholic clerics must be exposed before even the most die-hard lay person awakens to the increasingly obvious fact that Jesus Christ never intended a clergy, and certainly, never a clerical caste and elite?

They haven’t moved. I went to the doctor and he prescribed a suppository. Told me to place it in the back passage. I didn’t want to say anything to him, but I live in a council house and there are no back passages. we have a little side entrance for bringing in the coal. So I thought to myself, sure the suppository wont know the difference between the front of a house or the back of a house. so I went off to bed last night, I placed the suppository in the front porch with the geraniums and the busy lilies, and for all the good it did me, I may as well have been sticking it up my arse!

Praying the psalms under a director? You mean a human director, don’t you?

What is wrong with direction directly from God?

Like

@07.51, Prior Kirby says that God speaks to him directly out of the tabernacle, like a radio broadcast.

Like

I do mean a human director, not to take the place of God but to keep an eye in case the person starts thinking God is talking to them. It is a very common safeguard to prevent the kind of thing Dom Kirby writes.

Is it not rather strange that these “gods” invariably “speak” to the alleged prophets, holy persons, or priests, when and where no one else “hears” them: up a mountain, in a cave, in the desert and other “strange” places? Why are all these supposed gods so secretive: so circumlocutious, and generally mysterious in communication?
Why did this alleged Christian god sit on his arse doing nothing for more than a hundred thousand years of homo sapiens miserable existence, and only then decide to “save” us in the convoluted weird way christians claim? Maybe he reckoned all those nasty things his bible tells us about were a “good thing?” And speaking of bibles, why didn’t he just give Moses a PC instead of a tablet so to make spreading his word more widespread?
Ach now this religion is surely a funny business…….business…..AHA! That’s it! A business. A bit like show business: keep them wanting more!

Buckfast does not make a living off alcoholic Glaswegians. Local off licences do. The Abbey makes the tonic wine and a distributor supplies it to licensed premises. Do you condemn breweries and distilleries for alcoholism. I have tot of Buckfast tonic wine or Sonatogen tonic wine when I have had a cold or flu as a pick me up.
You really should take up your concerns with off licenses. I suspect that it would not be PC as most of them are owned by ethnoic minorities.

The situation is so bad the so-called acting / Temporary Abbot needs to get his backside there from Glenstall and stay there until it is sorted out. In the Benedictine rule the Abbot holds the place of Christ in the monastery. So what can we conclude? Sexual assault and financial fraud is not serious enough for the one holding the place of Christ to be there full-time until all issues are sorted.

From Catholic Ireland.net: “We came into contact with Fr John Hogan who is the parish priest of Rathkenny in the diocese of Meath. He said that there was a monastery in Stamullen of the Visitation nuns and they are thinking of leaving.”
And this from their newsletter a few years ago:
1 november — All Saints’ Day, and visit of His Lordship, Dr Michael Smith, Bishop of Meath.
Also, the anniversary of the priestly ordination (by the same bishop) of Father Subprior

Pat, you have no solid evidence or proof. You dislike tradition so this seems not to matter. In relation to the book In Sine Jesu, it has a Nihil Obstat and an Imprimatur. It is in the sphere of private revelation so nobody has to believe in it. It is popular in its own right because priests get something from the reflections. You also project your own sins on other people, there always has to be some sordid homosexual angle with your commentary even when it does not exist. You throw around accusations regularly which are unsubstantated, causing emotional distress for those who are named. Dawn Goldstein’s piece is very light on any proper critical analysis. She tries to make out that the Prior is somehow tainted because he moved around a bit. Did Sr Lucia of Fatima also not move to different convents, it proves nothing. The so called Meath priest who reached out to you is a shit stirrer not knowing all the facts himself

@10:07 nobody is talking about travelling, it’s about moving from monastery to monastery to join them. Benedictines take a solemn vow of stability and are supposed to have life-long membership of their community, unless it is suppressed or dispersed.

Can it not be said that it was Providence. God led him to this place. The fact that many men found a vocation here is a sign that his movement was providential as opposed to having itchy feet

One of Kirby’s rules for admitting new monks is that they don’t have to care for aged parents, yet the monastery chronicle records that he makes frequent trips to Connecticut to visit his aged parents.

There is nothing unusual about Benedictine Superiors leaving their monasteries to travel, in fact it is ‘the norm’ as there are so may reasons why it has to happen.

The irony is that if someone like Kirby tried to join Silverstream, Kirby would turn him away for:

A. Being over 35;
B. Having been in a previous monastery;
C. Being unstable – the moving around, the crisis years he had in Rome, and hearing voices.

No wonder he had to set up his own monastery.

Would you take on a person with his history if he applied to be a priest in the Oratory, +Pat? That might be an unfair question but I think that you would ask more questions than +Slattery & +Smith did.

A very perceptive and insightful comment.

There is some suspicion when orders which at one time admitted new members regardless of age suddenly introduce an age limit in 30’s. Those responsible for the change are likely to be closeted ageing middle-aged homosexuals with conservative public posturing who privately excite themselves at the arrival of fresh young objects of attraction.

This phenomenon deserves further investigation.

Like

It stands to reason that introducing an age limit is a means towards providing those responsible for formation with a fresh crop of younger bodies each autumn. It would be revealing to identify those who propose lowering the age limit while covering their real intentions in spiritualised cant. It similar to the phenomenon of covert homosexuals shouting loudly against same sex issues. Baffling that they can’t see what everyone else does.

Like

Poor Martina Purdy, the ex-BBC journalist, was dismissed, together with her fellow sister in simple vows, from their convent in Belfast because the solemnly professed nuns were so old and they didn’t forsee getting any more recruits and they feared that the age profile was too high.

The traddy monasteries don’t have that problem if they admit fit young bucks only.

Like

The strange thing about the monastic church appeal is that they have an architect, plans and full planning permission. They have loads of money coming in and the site was cleared by the young monks working free. Yet not a brick has been laid. It’s usual when fundraising for building projects to make a start, put up the shell to show donors that their money is being used and to encourage other doners to complete the job. It’s very strange it has not started.

There have been some knockabout comments on the blog about Big Tom Deenihan, but to be fair to him, it is clear from reading the priory’s chronicle in their publications that Tom visited the priory much more often and was more hands-on than his predecessor, Mandy Smith.
