FATHER TOM MONTGOMERY AKA MONTY

At 11.20 pm last night Saturday) Monty sent me an email.

FROM MONTY TO PAT

Dear Pat,

I have to ask you why you allow derogatory comments about me on your blog? It is quite distressing.

There are many untruths being bandied about me.

A particular one is the Australian. He had already announced he was leaving the Beda. Not sure it was before he had touched up a nun or pinned another seminarian on the pool table. It was certainly before the incident that has been mentioned on your blog.

I find the untruths said about me distressing. There are lots of false things said about me but it is enough to ruin my reputation. I’m happy to admit my wrongs but untruths are so damaging. Why do you allow such nasty and untrue comments to be published?

Having seen your blog I’m not sure how you will respond. But I’m writing to you personally in a private way.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Tom

I replied to Tom next morning – Sunday.

FROM PAT TO MONTY

Dear Tom,

Thank you for your email. I always reply to emails and letters. Its just good manners.

Maybe you would give me a confidential call in the afternoon or evening and we can discuss.

Pat

FROM MONTY TO PAT

Thank you for your email. I’m afraid I won’t be calling you. From what I’ve seen, I don’t feel that I could trust you.

As you said, responding is good manners. I could have just ignored your suggestion about a call, but that would have been impolite.

I just wanted you to know the effect the online gossiping about me (mainly through comments) was having on me. I’m just getting on with working in the parish, but your pack mob are not interested in that.

PAT SAYS

I got the first, unsolicited email from Tom at 11.20 pm Saturday night.

I responded by thanking him for his email and by offering a telephone conversation whereby I could listen to his side of the story and perhaps be more circumspect in the comments I allowed about him.

However, his second email to me at 12: 36 today (Sunday) was very shirty and semi aggressive.

So, instead of reaching out the hand to the outreached hand, Monty said he didn’t trust me and accused the comment makers on here of being a PACK MOB.

Why the change in tone overnight?

I expect Monty had a goodly gin in him when he wrote on Saturday night.

And then on Sunday morning, sober, he decided not to talk but to huff and puff.

Some time ago I was sent a full report on Monty undertaken at the request of his archbishop Elsie Nichols.

If I wanted to be nasty I could have published that report in full. I did not.

In fact I never heard of Monty until Westminster prirsts started commenting on here about him.

The big story was Monty’s unfortunate ” encounter” with an Aussie seminarian in Rome who smacked Monty after he made some “overture” to him. Monty came off worst with a broken limb.

Now Monty tells us the Aussie had touched up a nun and had a scrap with another seminarian over a pool table.

Obviously, the Aussie was very STRAIGHT.

Monty has had a few run ins with Nichols.

Nichols demanded he lose weight before ordaining him.

Monty also annoyed Nichols by gossiping about senior clergy in the bars of Lourdes, especially his nastiness about Bishop Alana Hopes.

Monty does not like people gossiping about him but he himself is one of the biggest gossipers in Westminster.

People who have featured prominently on this blog and got in touch with me and I listened to them and acted on their requests.

But Im afraid Monty showed his true colours on his second email to me.

I have just found out this man is to become our new parish priest so naturally I did a quick Google search and I was very distressed to see all this. Are you able to tell me what happened while he was with the anglicans and perhaps if he left on his own terms or was dismissed? Many thanks.

Yes, I agree, it is sad the way Anglicans like dressing up and get Franciscan habits out of their dressing up box.

I fear that the problem lies with a priest worrying about his reputation. Does this not encapsulate the point that a man of God should be humble and assured that through following the Word that he would not covet or seek the platitudes of others?

St Augustine says that “he who neglects his reputation is cruel”. The reputation-shredders here are even more cruel.

I’ll have you know that Clogher has three bishops, each as good as each other. We can’t all be urban sophisticates.

The Fermanagh Herald is holding the front page for the clerical changes. With a bit of luck we’ll have our desk priests recalled to the diocese, thereby allowing some of our octogenarian priests to retire.

What a nasty individual! He acts like a poor victim in the email then throws dirt at the aussie guy with unsubstantiated stories of a nun and ‘someone’ pinned to a pool table?. He needs help. That is very unbecoming of a priest. You are right Pat, he has a problem with gossip when it is about him but not when he is dishing it out. Disgusting.

At least someone’s Catholic in Ireland the ageing priest and congregation are only going in one direction they have nothing to offer. It was all going so well when they had the capital from the past to live off. I visited the remnant of the Christian Brothers in Dublin ten years ago, their famous school had a massive photo of Mecca on the wall and I listened to their testimony of how they realised they were biased towards the Catholic faith it was embarrassing “ we shouldn’t assume the that the children know what a first Friday was” followed by an explosion of laughter I thought Dick Emery must have walked on. Bishop Pat, what is the criteria for getting an ex-seminarian sectioned under the ‘Mental Health Act 1984’ ?
I know there needs to be a doctor involved, of sorts.
What part do the local authority social services play in this process, and to what degree?
I ask for no specific reason, be assured!

Like

In the UK, the emergency Coronavirus Act 2020 changed the rules on sectioning.

The amendments to the Mental Health Act 1983 include the following:

An application by an Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) under section 2 or 3 may be founded on a single medical practitioner – rather than the current two – if getting the recommendation of two would be impractical or cause delay;

The length of time that a person who is already an inpatient in hospital can be detained was increased from 72 hours to 120 hours;

The length of time a patient can be detained, pending a report from a practitioner or doctor was increased from six hours to 12 hours.

The time people can be held in a place of safety was increased from 24 hours to 36 hours.

Like

Oh really, a ‘doctor’ and a social worker?
Fancy that!
Surely the Police could play a part along the way… Better late than never, one could say!
What would I know about anything, I’m just a multidisciplinary electronics engineer with Attention Deficit: however it is my ADD which makes me a half decent, shipshape engineer.
You see, I am told, I have a particular gift in the area of fault finding; the more complex and intricate the fault, the more determined and committed I become in its, or their, rectification.
If it is an emergency safety system, say for protecting vulnerables, then I cannot walk away from site untill it is fixed: or indeed replaced!
Incidentally, I am just finishing a massive safety job now, just doing a little calibration at the same time as putting my tools away.
But these big jobs always come off better when there are more than one engineer on the job!

Good for you, MMM in taking seriously your responsibilities and evaluating whether an admission to a psychiatric hospital was the right thing to do in individual cases.

It’s sometimes hard to know what to think of the old psychiatric hospitals. I used to visit patients in St Luke’s in Armagh. Many had been resident for years and had friends and a community there and didn’t necessarily welcome or thrive when the push for more care in the community came in, though nobody would want to go back to the old days either.

Like

Peter: Normal circumstances requires the signature of two medical practitioners, both in agreement of the necessity for compulsory detention. One of them must be certified as having particular experience in assessment or treatment of mental illness. The specific documents used expresses these as medical RECOMMENDATIONS, and provide the BASIS on which an APPROVED Mental Health professional then has to make a judgement as to the necessity for compulsory detention, and ONLY IF SATISFIED, signs the legal authority for the detention. It is the EMERGENCY detention/sectioning which provides most controversy.
In an emergency where safety for the patient or others is a major consideration (Not simply the need for treatment), the signature/recommendation of one doctor can suffice, together with the AMH professional’s signed authority. It is also expected that the doctor should have previous knowledge of the patient.
You specifically ask about the role of Social Services, and from your Liverpool name tag, I assume you seek info relating to England. I have given a very simple outline above, but to more fully answer your query about Social Services:
The Approved Mental Health Professional is normally an experienced social services/local authority social worker who has passed specific designated training in mental illness. The role is not to provide additional diagnosis, but to consider in the widest sense the effects of compulsory detention on the individual patient and his/her family, and whether the use of compulsion is STRICTLY NECESSARY, bearing in mind the legal implications on the patient’s status. This can include such drastic effects as invalidating a will or any recently signed legal documents such as house sale for example. This area can be a minefield for relatives.
My own mental health training, (at Liverpool University you’ll be pleased to know!) preceded the 1983 Act, and related to the previous 1959 Mental Health Act. As a manager not at that time involved in direct work with clients, I did not take the full 1983 Act training, but managing staff who did, I was required to take a ‘short course’ training of its implications where it was again emphasised that the UK Parliament, in passing both Acts, recognised the need for a non medical external moderating influence against the medical profession’s sometimes over eagerness to treat illness, sometime even against the patient’s wishes. So the LEGAL AUTHORITY for detention rests with the Approved MH worker, usually a Social Services social worker, but could in certain circumstances where they have undertaken the required training, be a MH nurse or psychologist.
SS workers have always had it emphasised to them that their key role was to safeguard the interests of the patient.
I very well appreciated that role, for on several occasions when in practice, I refused to sign emergency orders to section patients under the 1959 Act, based on just one medical recommendation from a GP. It was not unknown for GPs under family pressure to seek to section “nuisance” patients, and I had many a battle with GPs in that respect. Even worse, one local hospital based psychiatrist did a patient home visit on a Saturday en route to his golf club, signed an emergency section recommendation, left it in an envelope with a neighbour of the patient, then rung Social Services emergency duty team to request a social worker to attend, complete the emergency requirements and convey the patient to hospital. I was the weekend duty social services manager at that time and fully supported the dissenting social worker both then, and at the subsequent investigation which criticised the psychiatrist. We were all pleased when he then “retired” shortly after for he was well known locally for his erratic behaviour.
I hope this helps you appreciate the various roles involved.

1.53 as do lots of agnostics so please don’t try to have a go at DG. You’re not weakening his point nor strengthening any of your own (that I’ve noticed you making) Mr Guy With Superior Hearing.
Now I would say to DG that TM has effectively defended himself because I (for one) wouldn’t have bothered to look him up but for TM drawing attention. Reportedly, in the background there had been strange jockeying for influence among persons who have since become prominent.
A thing that ought to worry us is an apparent fixation among many of them about “numbers of vocations” as letting them off some sort of hook in each others’ eyes, similar to “JP II brings in the vocations” or “such & such a society or grouping brings in the vocations”. (The status of laity isn’t a vocation and can’t even help you be a christian.)
But what about the secular profession(s) and earning power which TM was deprived of the chance of? An extroverted personality and interest in food are surely good qualities for many fields. What criteria for “vocations” do diocesan and other officials elevate above his potential in any alternative occupation?
I’m not trying to separate TM from sacred clergyship necessarily, these questions are simply useful to ask, around all seminary candidates and ordinands anyway. And will demand remain constant: perhaps God doesn’t need more at some periods in history. And what governs our choice of training establishment (venue) for each of them?

@3.27pm As you mention Enfield and declare Monty was a modern day St Francis maybe we should ask his PP at the time Fr Slawomir. We should also ask the African Deacon at that time too because poor Monty was loose tongued about them with criticism. The sad thing about it was the criticism found its way back to them. The same thing happened with Norbet his PP in Welwyn. Under the influence in the bars in Lourdes way before these episodes it was Stuart Wilson, Bishop Alan Hopes and others who were the subjects of his gossip. Can you see the pattern here? His diaconate was delayed by +Vincent who was furious about his gossiping and is out of control weight.

At 3.49pm you are wrong on several accounts: I never declared him to be a modern day St Francis. You have made that up. There was no African deacon in Enfield but an African priest who was ordained at the same time as Father Tom. You have also said that Bishop Hopes was bad mouthed. Father Tom was very complimentary of the Bishop in his twitter account which has been restricted because of bad mouthed trolls. I live in Enfield and know Father Tom.
4.58pm. I am not Father Tom.
I do agree with the Deaf Guy on this point. It is important to give credit where credit is due and be fair minded.
There is too much tittle tattle and it is not from Father Tom. Too many old sweetie wives opening their gobs and letting their bellies rumble. Too many anonymous people bad mouthing and naming individuals and sticking the boot in.
Sadly I am reminded of Jesus being jeered on the road to Calvary.

Like

A@5:48: I appreciate your interesting question as to whether atheists are “hard wired” to delusions. For myself, and I think for many humanists I’ve listened to, while saying that idiocy or intelligence are not significant factors, I’d respond as follows, and simply off the top of my head
Each of us comes into the world, as a “blank canvas” open mindedly gaining knowledge and information from personal and educational experience, to which we apply our intelligence through deductive reasoning to search for objective truths. Thus we confirm and accept some truths, and discard patently obvious errors, ideally always remaining open to new and relevant information to inform of need for a potential review of perceived truth.
Psychological studies shows the impact of emotional imprinting on impressionable young children, and this seems particularly strong on religious matters, the core claims of which cannot be backed up, demonstrated, or proven by any objective or deductive process. I refer here, for example to the alleged existence of a supreme personal creator god. In effect, it seems many religious believers are simply hard wired from childhood experience into a faith observance they cannot if asked, support with evidence, …..other than, …..faith.
It is highly significant that the alleged “truths” of religion are backed up by the inevitability of our death, and both the fear of eternal Hellfire punishment and the illusory promise of everlasting Heavenly reward put forward by religious leaders!
By way of contrast, PROPERLY UNDERSTOOD, an atheist is not hard wired to reject religious belief. H/She retains an open mind on matters of religious belief, and simply states that on the available evidence there appears no reason to believe in a god or follow any religious belief. I am certainly not prepared to believe simply because of what others think, believe in, or claim, without substance, to be proof. And this can be said separately from all the inevitable “nice accompaniments” of religious tradition, such as sense of community, or its alleged charitable good works. These are separate issues not offering any proof. Admittedly some very strident atheists’s complete disdain for religion may cause one to think they are or have been psychologically or emotionally hard wired against religion. I believe they may be so strident in protest at the harm they see religion has caused and vocally intolerant of its fatuous unsupported unverifiable claims. I have Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens in mind here.
And, as I’ve said here before, on a personal level: show me evidence, proof, anything objective and verifiable. To date, none of you have provided anything other than faith based claims, along with of course, the inevitable ad hominem attacks which only serve to confirm their contributors’ limitations. Does it also demonstrate the pernicious nature of how religious beliefs when questioned, can create aggressive hostility in the less able? It would certainly seem so.

Out of touch parents can only “animate” their sons to be out of touch diocesan COOs or trustees (or priests). What we need is a church where all loose bods “bring up” all other loose bods. As a single (as yet) it has long been been ruled that I don’t have any ideas to offer anyone.

PAT’S WEDDINGS

I absolutely don’t believe, Pat, that you should provide your services “gratis”. All men are entitled to a fair day’s pay for their work. You have a learned (over a long time) skill set, and just like a joiner or a plasterer you have the right to a decent reward for your effort. And, to be fair, most of the people you provide the service to probably believe they have had good value and don’t resent the fact that they have to pay for it. A man has to make a living, and to my mind Pat makes a more honourable living than many. In addition, as a free agent, he can make decisions over whether he needs to take an amount from people who are in need. Exactly as it should be. What a decent man.
