Amy Martin is one of the poorest Irish episcopal appointments in recent years – if not the very poorest!

He is a “sissy” in a man’s job.

With the Irish Catholic Church in meltdown there was never a more important time to have a gifted man and a man of substance.

We needed double cream.

We’ve got skimmed milk.

Amy is allowing men like John Gates to bully the very ones who have kept the church going for the last 70 years – the elderly.

Anyone know which watch Gates is wearing?

What kind of “man” would pick on old, infirm people to bully?

And why is Amy so weak when vulnerable people continue to be hurt?

Any cleric abusing his parishioners even verbally should be challenged by the bishop and if he continues to do it he should face disciplinery action – up to and including dismissal for gross misconduct.

The problem is that the church and bishops and priests have been allowed to be exempt for so long from employment law.

FIVE REFUSED ARMAGH?

Is it really true that 5 people refused Armagh before CANDIDATE 6 – Amy accepted.

Obviously I’m not MMM but that’s exactly what I was thinking, but with a twist (lol). In recent months the church has been asking us to pray but also asking us for money because donations are down. What a con.
I think a lot of people recognise a difference between the two – and not even spirituality of a new age type necessarily. I think a lot of people with residual Christian beliefs continue to say their prayers but wouldn’t be seen dead in a church.
I do think the clergy have a lot to answer for – there was a post on here a while back about a travelling family going to a wedding and the clergy didn’t miss an opportunity to moan about the attitude of the unchurched to weddings, and more recently there’s been whingeing about funerals.
Your attitude says far more about your approach to other people, guys, and is a large part of the reason people won’t go near a church.

MMM, I think the public have wised up hugely, but I don’t think that’s indicated by those comments, which I think really show what a bitchy, back-stabbing bunch of touchy old queens the clergy are. Your average person in the street will have no interest in the archbishop, the only people who have a motivation to criticise him are primarily his clergy and then other clerics.

It’s very striking that if you want to be Archbishop of Armagh, don’t be a priest in a parish.

Amy did 2 years in a parish, the rest of the time he was a teacher priest and a desk priest.

His predecessor, Sean Baptist did one year in a parish. The rest of the time he was a teacher priest and then on the staff of the Irish College.

Cahal Daly, Sean Baptist’s predecessor, never served in a parish. He was a scholastic philosophy lecturer in QUB.

Before him, Tom Fee was never in a parish and spent his entire priesthood studying and on the staff of Maynooth, as did his predecessors, Cardinals Conway, D’Alton and MacRory and O’Donnell, who were never as much as a temporary curate, and before them, the famous Cardinal Logue only did 2 years in a parish, and that was in the 19th century.

Over the past 100 years, the total combined parish service of archbishops of Armagh has been 3 years. I haven’t checked, but Dublin probably isn’t much better.

For the umpteenth time, by and large clergy aren’t in it to serve others. There is the odd very rare exception.
The church is a mediaeval system of patronage and favours, and that is all it is.
The fact that the lower officials of this system of patronage fail to recognise that is one of the most disturbing things about it.

I don’t agree with the portrayals of Eamon Martin here. I was in Maynooth at the same time as him. I have barely met him since those days – not more than five times. He is hardworking, kind, sensitive, somewhat driven to do the best he can do, bright, a man of prayer, and a decent human being. I don’t believe he has a bad or vindictive bone in his body. Why are the attacks here so personalised? I’m sure he said yes to the job from a sense of duty and wanting to shoulder any responsibility that comes his way. I find the unprovoked attacks on him here revolting.

Tom was one of the warmest people I ever met, a great and holy man with a great sense of fun. The people of Armagh parish took him to their hearts. You definitely cannot say that about Cackle, the Wounded Healer and Amy.

Fr Gates is going to be made a Canon in the Armagh clerical changes to be announced imminently. It’s a vote of confidence by the Archbishop and an implied rebuke to the person who has made the PP’s life hell, all over a grave.

I did. He sent for me when Daly sacked me and chatted to me for 4 hours. He also asked me for a special favour for one of his family members and was delighted to oblidge.

The only time Tom let us down was when he stood by and let Casey and others run Fr McGinnity off the road.

Why have Killala lost all their youngest priests. Why are there no vocations? John Fleming will retire in 3 years from now, and with almost 20 years service, he will have ordained only 2 priests for the diocese, with only 1 under the age of 40. what a statistic!

Time to merge these silly little Irish dioceses such as Killala and Clonfert.

According to the Killala website, Fr Brendan Hoban, one of the leading ACP keeners, does not have a pastoral assignment. He’s listed among the priests of the diocese but does not seem to be attached to any parish and he doesn’t have a desk job either.

The ACP has turned Killala into a toxic Diocese. A lot of those priests should have left the priesthood as they don’t believe. It was easier to sponge off the laity and pontificate on local radio. I don’t know the Bishop but he came in against a cabal which needed to be dusbanded

He only told the truth about all those wayward, cruising, gay sex, camp, clergy that he knew, in particular that shambolic and immoral crowd he came across in Army Chaplaincy. He was not wrong. Patricia. This is looking as though it may be true. Toal’s last statement was clear that restrictions had been placed upon Rev Despard that he must sign up to in advance of returning. It was clear that he wasn’t going to accept them. If he was to return, several clergy would walk, so that’s not going to happen. Shouldn’t be left open ended, so perhaps it has reached its natural conclusion. Also, why should Parishioners need to pay for his upkeep when he has done nothing for years? There comes a time when closure is required.
