It was a very happy affair (not) The Archbishop was full of his usual praise for the VF’s and the other priests of the Diocese (Not)

At least one was fired after the meeting for being bold and not agreeing with the Boss.

The other VF’s were not asking questions about the financial agreements made with 43 members of staff in Archbishops House who have been made redundant in the last two weeks, some of whom got at 100K settlement.

The poor VF’s were not at all happy, but the spineless shits said nothing.


Will someone who knows what is actually going on in Dublin call the Charities Regulator or better still CAB”?

The above comment, obviously from a Dublin priest, says how many Dublin priests feel about Dermo.

While he got a good reputation on the handling of abuse his record on the care of priests seem abysmal.

But how can the priests at the recent meeting, representative of the 360 plus priests sit there and not challenge Dermo?

Does he instill that level of fear?

Even in his dying says?

Is it true that he sacked one VF for standing up to him the other day?

And these 43 being made redundant.

How have they suddenly become redundant?

Were they in 43 positions created by Dermo for his pets?

Are they getting up to 4.3 million in redundancy payments?

Even John Charles McQuaid, tough as he was was famous for being very pastoral and caring for his priests.

Has Dermo bought a new pad in Dublin yet?

Will he be spending more time in Rome?

The new archbishop will surely have to make the care of the priests Priority Number One.

Pat, Dermo of Ballyer has been a massive disaster for Dublin. The priests are waiting anxiously for the day when he vacates Drumcondra. Rumor has it that he will reside in a North Dublin Parish on the fringe of the inner city. This however is a ruse as he already owns an apartment in Italy where he will spend the majority of his time, his Dublin address will be a convenience. A bit late for ‘an option for the poor’ from a jet setting Price of the Church more at home in Davos than Ballymun or indeed his native Balyfermot.
You are right to say that he has handled the child abuse scandals well in that he has hung other out to dry while he has sought to present himself as aloof from the hierarchy and distanced from the clergy. The price of this ‘holier than them’ attitude is the revulsion of the clergy of Dublin towards him, and the alienation of the Irish bishops. He is a master of the sound bite and a wonderful commentator well able to outline the problems of the Irish Church – Yet he had done NOTHING towards offering a way forward. Dublin never needed a social analyst – we needed – and will need – a PASTOR. They should have left ‘Coddle’ in a bureaucratic post and entrusted the sheep of Dublin to a Shepherd who wanted to be there for them. The writing was on the wall when in an interview after his appointment he made clear that he didn’t want to come to Dublin.
We can only hope and pray that his ‘special friend’ Paul Tighe won’t replace him. He wouldn’t know what a sheep looks like like let alone recognize its smell. The smell pf crimson taffeta robes is more his milieu.

Oh for God’s sake, don’t you look under the rug ? You’ll find all those places hothouses of homoerotic culture, language and lifestyle on the part of staff and seminarians. It may not have hit the papers in the last 5 years, but it is there. Just be a fly on the wall around seminarians and you understand where their nterests lie and beneath the formulaic pious shiite they mouth when required to, they are interested in a good time, drink, gay sex, gossip, feathering their own nests, networking with older priests who can further their cause. A pastoral heart comes way behind.

The strange goings on are still going on but more discreetly, lest they end up on the blog.

Pat did Maynooth’s job for them and cleared out most of the summer of love merchants. With Maynooth now a hollowed out husk now with only a handful of lads and the ringleaders mostly gone, and with the Irish College closed thanks to Pat, the opportunities for strange goings on are more limited. Most activity now takes place away from the campus.

+Pat, contrary to what is being said, there is nothing odd or strange about the redundancy plans in Drumcondra – you might have seen in the Irish Times “Priests agree 25% drop in personal income and voluntary redundancy scheme in place” as “Donations to Catholic Church down 80%” this is due to the China virus! You cant say your income hasn’t been impacted too?

The money isn’t there – the redundancy covers lay staff at Clonliffe College and parish pastoral workers. The money pile is depleted.

Dermo only recently moved back into AB House as living quarters – he has an apartment (Church owned) up the road in Drumcondra beginning with a C and ending in T – and no it isnt a four letter word! 🙂

How can they pay staff without any income?

Also, the next tranche of the sale to GAA is taking place which means they will have to vacate Clonliffe College – the Red House (you might have fond memories) is already gone in tranche 1 – it is now being used (and abused) by the developers as their command centre – I hope they realise this is a listed building and respect it!

The slimmed down staff will move to a purpose built office on the site to the rear of AB House between AB House and the old Mater Dei college – now a homeless hub run by the diocesan charity, Crosscare.

I doubt the priests agreed to a 25% cut, they were told their pay was being cut by 25%. Dublin must have huge reserves, why not use them?

Youvshould ask the Department of Finance to pay you the £10k rates relief that D&C sneakily applied for on your behalf. You should have reported the diocese to the PSNI for suspected fraud, Pat. You only became aware of what was going on by accident.

As far a I am aware this does not include assets directly held in the St. Laurence O’Toole Diocesan Trust which does not publish annual reports nor is it required.

The Diocese publish their accounts on the website. There must be totally incompetent accountants – they had to restate their prior years as they didnt capture correctly their assets! They have plenty of accountants – why this mess up?

The diocese is a management mess. Too many desk priests in Clonliffe with no clear vision. Dermos let down his lay staff. He has led the Covid era poorly as have other bishops too. Why has 5O% left? Says a lot. Incompetence at the highest levels. HR & Communications now being wound up. We need a pastoral bishop ASAP as us priests are despairing.

+Pat, VERY STRANGE GOINGS ON…. Surely they had the site valued at MARKET VALUE or did they just sell without seeking professional advice? If this is the case they may have broke the law by underselling assets based on recent precedent at Our Lady’s Hospice.

The shrewd deal merchants rang rings round the Church. They always do. The huge north campus at Maynooth, which had been the property of St Patrick’s College, was sold to Maynooth University for the piffling sum of €4m. Even as undeveloped agricultural land that would have been worth much more.

Dr William Smyth revealed to the Dail Public Accounts Committee that St Patrick’s College sold the north campus, some 66 or 67 acres for £4.5m punts, at around £66k punts an acre, an absolute bargain for agricultural land in that area, and a giveaway for a developed campus.

I work on that campus and many locals use the grounds to walk their dogs, have a stroll and also cut out from Drumcondra Road to Clonliffe Road – there was no consultation with anyone it seems, just snuggled up in the board room in GAA HQ up the road or maybe in the parlor of AB house with a coffee brewed on the 100k Miele kitchen appliance? Coddle sandwiches with the crusts cut off.

As it has been said THIS IS NOT THEIR PERSONAL FORTUNE this belongs to THE PEOPLE – the “idiots” who fund and donate to this bunch of IDIOTS. These funds are held in TRUST – do you know what that means? Trustees have a responsibility as fiduciary – they FAILED if they sold this for pittance.

Failing to get the right deal for Clonliffe is typically amateurish Church behavior. On top of that, bishops, priests and nuns have a great tendancy to treat assets they are temporary custodians of as their private property, to be given away or disposed of cheaply. That is despite such assets being built with the pennies of the poor. It is also contrary to charity law, which requires charity trustees to maximise income and value from assets.

The temptation to look good, get a nice headline and look charitable at no cost is too tempting.

Striking examples include Archbishop Ryan donating Merrion Square, the proposed site of the cathedral, to Dublin Corporation for zero punts. The Irish College, Paris was given to the Irish Government after the Irish bishops kicked out the Polish seminary that was using it.

Then we have the nuns who gave away the multi-million site for the new National Abortion Hospital, the nuns who gave away the soon to be renamed Our Lady of Lourdes hospital in Drogheda, where they abort babies, the Vincentians selling All Hallows to DCU at a bargain basement price, the SJs giving away their very valuable Milltown library to DCU, which has no use for it but they wouldn’t give it to Maynooth, and Maynooth disposing of its north campus for a shockingly low price. Vultures are now circling the historic south campus too.

Many weeks ago, I wrote a comment here talking about the misappropriation of funds in the Dublin Diocese. I told you how the GAA money has been. Diarmuid Martin has vast expenses, including but not limited to his home, Holidays, Hotels, Travel, Property, Pastoral workers, Apartments etc.
I was laughed at.
The land was sold for a quick buck. 50k kitchens, expensive art, cigars, wines, new car, retirement houses (Rome and Dublin), expensive redundancies for all his kittens including Albus Merrick.

I’ve never been able to spot the difference between Dermo and his pal Patsy McGarry, the Irish Times religious affairs journalist. Both are analysts and critics of the diocese and wider Church, but Dermo was the only one who could do anything about it. Dermo constantly criticised Maynooth but did nothing about it, apart from withdrawing his couple of students, even though the college is in his diocese and he is a trustee.

Every bishop at the end of his term must ask if his diocese is better or worse off after his period in office. We all know the answer to that when it comes to Dublin.

Pat, Fr. Andrew O’Sullivan is a decent guy and he wouldn’t have resigned lightly.Do we know anything of the issue that precipitated his resignation? I suspect it was something he was trying to impose on the priests.
The Dublin Diocesan Common fund is theoretically run by the priests of the diocese but in reality is controlled by the now all powerful highly paid accountants of Drumcondra. Who deduce in excess of $100,000 pa to ‘administer’ it. A task an accounts technician could perform on part time hours. I recently had sight of the list of those accepting redundancy and surprise surprise not one of the highly paid finance gurus appears on it. Dermo has handed over the diocese to these self-serving bureaucrats who have no sense of what a church is about. He even has a ‘General Manager’ employed – at a cost I dread to imagine. This Supremo refused all questions at the common fund meeting on any aspect of diocesan finances and bulldozed the 25% salary cut through. The so called ‘Moderator of the Curia’ Monsignor Paul Callan is a spineless easily led insipid individual out of his depth swimming with the sharks. The gurus run rings around him. Diarmuid will leave a diocese financially on its knees, bereft of vocations while ‘management’ (a Dermo created entity), will continue to live high on the hog. The whole thing is a disgrace.

The next appointment to Dublin will be a man of pastoral experience and links with Opus Dei. That man has been seen a lot in Dublin and at AB House in the last number of weeks. The Administrator for Waterford is primed and ready to go. Armagh will lose the red hat in due course and rightly so.

5:25pm – the Ballyer Boy said openly on Miriam (crooked eye) O Callaghan Meets if timing was right he may well have been a journalist for RTE – I am not going to post to the interview. He was asked at the time what might have been had he not joined the priesthood. Dermo did his leaving cert the year after RTE had an opening for apprentice journalists, his brother was born on the right side of the fence and ended up with a lucrative career in journalism.

Dermo doesn’t believe in the Church or even G-d – he cares about himself – probably thinks he is a G-d of sorts.

Dermo appears to have never served in a parish. After postgraduate studies in Rome he worked for the Holy from 1976 until he was parachuted into Dublin. I’ll never understand why desk priests such as Dermo, Des Connell, Cahal Daly, Sean Brady, Eamon Martin, Noel Treanor suddenly become become bishops. It would be like making someone who’d never taught in a classroom the head of a school, or putting a doctor who’d never seen patients as the head of a hospital. Such bishops are awful at it because they had no apprenticeship and no affinity with their diocese.

They represent the ultimate success of the seminary system….. Oscar Wilde of his own tradition said; a Bishop says at 70 what he was taught to say at 17 ( perhaps he said 18. ) That about gets it…. submission of intellect and will…. and sometimes other things besides….

Bishop Buckley and His Disgrace of Dublin share derision of clergy. Pat Buckley for honourable reasons; ostracised because he fell from favour…. clergy are taught to take their q from Top Dog. Dermot Martin is like many of his episcopal colleagues… having reached the pinnacle they hankered for, realising its dross, they sublimate their disappointment and anger at the “ lower” clergy as they call them….. I am well on the way to joining them as I realise how “ ecclesial “ the relationships are….. if you are separated from the “ profession “, all the years of associations are ended. The prime objective of any “ professsion” or “ trade “ is to keep others out. The Irish Catholic must have taken a quare hit during lockdown with the churches closed and therefore its main sales venue closed. Does it make any money at the best of times. It is very unclear who owns it.

The World Meeting of Families was supposed to be Timothy’s big moment when, on a international stage, he would show why Sean Brady and Noel Treanor had such belief in him. Unfortunately, it was a poignant and expensive failure and now people with families (ironically) are being laid off, partly as a result of it.

RTÉ did a behind the scenes programme on the World Meeting of Families. Timo features in a number of cringeworthy sequences. At the beginning, his oft-repeated “all I ever wanted was a quiet parish in the Antrim hills” line is heard 😂. From the programme, the great big flop that was WMOF is only too evident.

There are some really good priests/ men in the Archdiocese of Armagh, the same in Dublin, but they do not have the facility to speak up or forthright…. the tragedy of what they still belong to…. it thrives on fear since medieval times… won’t change anyway soon so the two Martins and their ilk hold sway….. like the Argentine run a muck in China…. there are not two but three currencies there now !!

Who are the priests doing desk jobs in Clonliffe? Why are no Laity in senior pastoral roles….? Dermo is finished and his cronies too. Let’s hope a replacement is appointed very soon with a heart for mission and a belief in people and priests. Dublin deserves better. I think I’m well-informed about church matters, but even I couldn’t tell you when or where the WMOF stuff started, how often they happen, where it was held prior to coming to Dublin and where it will be held next.

Yes. I know I’m his wife but he’s never “had” me. I’m a consecrated virgin you see. Timmy knew this when we married and he said he would be content to grieve and offer up his grief for vocations.
He’s happy now – apart from when he is grieving – in his inner city parish. It’s not quite the Antrim hills but it will do us for a few years.
