WHO WILL REPLACE DM IN DUBLIN?

Having considered Dermo’s legacy earlier in the week, let’s consider his potential replacement.

As he leaves, Dermo’s legacy is becoming clearer.

On the PLUS side is his handling of CSA.

On the CONS side are:

1. His disastrous relationship with the Dublin clergy.

2. His Big Spender behaviour and his gabit of selling off church property way short of market value.

So it looks as if his replacement will have to

1. Heal the relationship that priests have with AB house.

2. Mend all the broken finances.

Those two projects will be enough to keep any new AB occupied for years.

So who are the runners?

PAUL TIGHE

I think that Paul Tighe would be a bad choice. He is a long time personal friend of DM’s and DM will have complained to him about the disastrous priests of Dublin.

Tighe would be as cold as DM.

BRENDAN LEAHY

Leahy is a Dublin priest. I don’t think that he has the charisma or presence to be the archbishop of Dublin. He would be a friendly face but lacks substance.

KEVIN DORAN

Kevin believes that being Gay is like having Downs Syndrome.

PHONSIE CULLINAN

Phonsie’s name has come up as a contender. Handing Dublin to Phonsie would be madness. Phonsie is an Opus Dei Catholic and is quite mad when it comes to social and sexual matters.

ALAN MC GUCKIAN

Alan has been spoken of as an outsider. But he is 67. Recently he has failed victims of abuse in Raphoe. He has also become somewhat austere.

LEONARD MALONEY SJ

The Irish provincial has been mentioned. Like Francis he is an SJ. But I had dealings with him with regard Paul Prior and the SJs and discovered that he does not acknowledge or reply to letters and emails. That smacks of of arrogance and contempt.

A DUBLIN PRIEST?

Maybe Dublin priests could suggest a Dublin priest that might make a good archbishop?

Mind you, the precedent for that is not good. Dermot Ryan went from priest to archbishop and turned out to be a proper arrogant and ignorant bugger.

I was his aide de camp on the day he was installed as archbishop in 1972 and he treated me like dirt.

So who will succeed DM?

And will he just be another disaster who will continue to preside over the managed decline of the RCC in Ireland?

DERMO NOT ATTENDING MONSIGNOR CONWAY’S FUNERAL.

I was very surprised to see that DM did not attend and preside at the funeral of Monsignor Seamus the former PP of Booterstown yesterday morning.

I do know that he attended the reception of the remains on Thursday evening. But I don’t think that is good enough.

Seamus Conway had given 57 years service to the archdiocese of Dublin.

He had even been the Vicar General for a short time.

He had served in parishes, seminaries and prisons.

I think that every priest deserves that his bishop preside at his funeral.

Of course, it makes sense for a priest friend of the deceased to preach the homily.

But for the bishop to be absent from the funeral of a priest, except for the gravest of reasons, in my opinion is unforgivable!

Jesuits aren’t supposed to accept episcopal office, though of course Frank did and he’s putting more of his crew into bishoprics. Religious order priests shouldn’t be bishops. They know nothing of being a diocesan priest and they decided that they didn’t have a vocation to be a diocesan priest never mind being a diocesan bishop. It would be like appointing a diocesan priest the abbot of a monastery.

Like

After Downside, Ealing and Ampleforth maybe it’s time for the Benedictines to get out of all schools.

It’s strange that they appointed a new abbot, an outsider from Belmont Abbey the day before the announcement. Does he have the function of being a Thomas Cromwell type disolver of the monastery, overseeing the dispersal of the worldly goods? Presumably their relics of St Oliver Plucknett will be sent to Armagh diocese?

Like

What a display of ignorance about the role of Thomas Cromwell in the dissolution of the monasteries!
Cromwell feathered his own nest from as early as 1530 and the demise of his patron Wolsey. The wholesale plunder of houses of religious men and women benefited the king and aristocracy to an immeasurable degree.
The ministry that Father Nicholas has so generously assumed will not be easy. His first task will be to find a new location for the monastic community. The Benedictine way of life has been around for fifteen hundred years and no doubt it will continue.

For the last 100+ years Dublin has been blighted by the appointment of deskmen, academics and teachers who hadn’t served a day in a parish. This must stop. A major diocese with many issues needs a pastor, not a scholar or a bureaucrat.

We’ve had Dermo (a diplomat though surprisingly undiplomatic), Connell (UCD staff), McNamara (Maynooth staff then +Kerry), Ryan (UCD staff), McQuaid (Blackrock College staff) and Byrne (Irish College staff). Enough is enough.

Like

Paul Tighe has been a priest of the diocese for 34 years but has never served in a parish, which therefore makes him a front runner for the hat.

Cuddle Martin never presides at priests’ funerals. He only ever appears at the reception of remains. Yes, Pat, in every other diocese the bishop celebrates the funeral Mass – but not in Dublin. It’s indicative of what you describe – the breakdown between DM and his clergy. He regards most of them with complete contempt. It says a lot that he can’t be arsed to say the funeral Masses of priests and pays mere lip service by showing up at the reception of remains in his pointy hat.

Does it matter, really matter, whether or not a Roman bishop presides at the funeral of a priest?

Get over yourselves, for Christ’s sake! Along with your overweening sense of specialness, and preferential treatment. This is clericalism pure and simple.

Do you truly believe that a Roman bishop has clout in Heaven beyond that of anyone else.

I also hope you are not a parent because your children would be devalued, hurt and dehumanized. You seem a jealous, begrudging fool and an utter gombeen.

Like

The big problems with appointing deskmen and academics as bishops is that such men are not naturally sociable. Being sociable is like a muscle and if you don’t lose it you lose it. You are also tempted to think of those who had simpler lives as curates and parish priests in unfashionable parishess as being a bit second-rate.

The chief issue is that if you mostly or exclusively worked in the Vatican or in a university or school you become accustomed to an environment in which things happened when you asked them to happen. Things were under your control because when you are in an institution the machinery of the institution means that when you pull levers, things happen. There is less need for soft skills.

Then, when catapulted into a diocese, you find that you don’t have the soft skills to deal with complicated, messy, sometimes difficult people who don’t always follow orders. Never having been a PP with curates you haven’t developed key personnel skills.

After a few months you retreat into your palace where you have temper tantrums and rely on enforcers to handle the clergy whom you hold in sullen disregard, a feeling they reciprocate. Such it is with Dermo and Noel Treanor, and was with Paddy Walsh and Cahal Daly.

Like

A snapshot of Dermo’s globetrotting was supplied by the press office in response to an Irish Times query. The diocese revealed that in the four month period 1 August 2008 to 17 December 2008 Dermo was absent from the diocese for 53 days, almost half of the period in question.
He attended the Synod of Bishops in Rome for three weeks in October, where he had been nominated to represent the Irish Bishops Conference.
He accompanied the Dublin diocesan pilgrimage to Lourdes for five days in September.
As vice-president of the Commission of the Episcopal Conferences of the EU, he attended four days of meetings in that role.
He also attended six days of meetings in his role as co-moderator of the joint working group for relations between the Roman Catholic Church and the World Council of Churches.
He attended a two-day conference in Istanbul, in a personal capacity.
This was in addition to 15 days of his annual leave taken between August and December 2008.

Their singing will no longer be needed and as for their dancing, well enough said. Most of the VF’s and the majority of the council of priests should follow DM into the darkness. Actually nothing was debunked: there was merely the pretence of such.
I hate to be a party-pooper, but what’s an honest soul to do in a dishonest world? 😕

Yes, an excellent analysis with historical back up info.
And, I thought, wouldn’t it be revealing to have a similar analysis of the origins of Christianity and its subsequent development.
I certainly think it might shatter a lot of misled beliefs.

I think Ferns has a better chance of getting one from within the Diocese after Brennan retires. Dalton, Fegan, Broaders, Marken. I think Farrel from Ossory will get Dublin. Another Dermo by Name.. LOL

Enda Cunningham or Kieran McDermott for Dublin??? Cunningham is a depressive and a carrier. McDermott has a vacuum between his ears. Heaven preserve us. Whatever next Brian Darcy!

Kieran has a vision, a big vision – he had his house in Dundrum refurbished for a few million including the small ancillary costs to the parish centre, he excelled in the Coddle Panto and moved to Adm in the Pro – he refuses to occupy 83 Marlborough Street, the parochial house attached to the Pro because it is outdated, damp, cold and unbecoming of a priest of his stature.

8.48: What stature?? Benelli has notions of grandeur..No one trusts him and he’s so self important that he doesn’t even notice the AB’s disregard for him. Benelli, benelli for kitchen sraff.

Ab Martin submitted his resignation when he turned 70, they have had 5 years to look for a replacement. Diddly and dallying sends out a message that there’s no one of any quality to take his place, and they need more time to search. The Nuncio essentially chooses the next bishop. It’s just a matter of getting it stamped and signed in Rome.

BREAKING NEWS ARCHDIOCESE OF GLASGOW
A school chaplain is to stand trial accused of having sex with a girl. Father John Sweeney, 45, allegedly committed the offence between September 2016 and June 2017. Sweeney is also accused of kissing and cuddling the girl, who was under 18, as well as sending her naked pictures of himself. The charge states Sweeney was chaplain at a secondary school in Glasgow where the girl was a pupil. It claims Sweeney met her outside school and took her to various locations in his car. He is charged with repeatedly engaging in sexual activity with the schoolgirl while in a position of trust. It is also alleged the girl was supplied with alcohol and asked about her sexual history by Sweeney.
Sweeney faces a separate charge of behaving in a threatening or abusive manner at St Maria Goretti’s parish house in the city. The charge claims Sweeney swore, uttered sectarian remarks as well as repeatedly make a threatening gesture in October 2016. Sweeney pleaded not guilty on Friday during a hearing at Glasgow Sheriff Court. A trial has been set for March next year by Sheriff Andrew Cubie. Sweeney, of the city’s Royston, was granted bail meantime.

Another exclusive by Taggart. We should pray for Fr Sweeney. I cannot comment if he is guilty or not, a Jury will decide that. All I know is that he is a good and prayerful man and from
what I know of him, no alarm bells ever rang. Pray for the alleged victim too.

Taggart is certainly on top of things in Scotland and is good with the exclusives. Who is he? A Priest or Deacon?

This man was arrested 3 years ago. Ridiculous that any investigation takes this long. The impact on all must be beyond awful.

Police Scotland are also investigating Fr Neil McGarrity. Arrested and charged but under investigation for sexual misconduct towards a minor. Archdiocese of Glasgow need lit prayers.

I can’t understand the legal problem if she is under 18 (assuming she is over 16)
Not being funny but many a man and woman has had sex with someone between 16-18.
I’m not condoning his actions but what is the offence?

Like

The offence is that he has has allegedly had sex with a school girl under 18 in his care. Having sexual relations with someone 16+ isn’t illegal but when you are in charge of them as a teacher, Priest, Social Worker etc it is as this is a position of
Trust.

Like

The legal problem is that he was in a position of trust by working in her school. That makes it legally very different in the UK.

Like

Much as I can’t stand McGarrity and neither can most of the clergy and nearly all of the lay faithful I know, he hasn’t done anything wrong. all will come out in the wash.

Like

Yes. I can’t stand him either. In fact to most people I know he is insufferable. That said he is entitled to the presumption of innocence until proven guilty.
