THE PRIOR OF MULLAGH.

Paul Prior

Paul Prior, ex Rome, ex Maynooth ex SJs, having spent a week as the curate of Glenfarne is now appointed PP of Mullagh on the Cavan / Meath border.

Many regard him as a parish dodger – so finally he has embraced parish life.

He leaves a trail of destruction behind him in Rome and Maynooth as the Grand Inquisitor of erections, wet dreams, underwear and all things associated with those matters.

Hopefully he will restrain himself in these areas as I imagine the 21st century young males of that parish might react rather aggressively to his enquiries.

As Christians we must wish him well.

But as Christians we must ask if he has any plans to express sorrow to all those whose sexual privacy he invaded?

Some of these young men are still carrying deep scars from their encounters with him.

One hopes that Paul has also engaged in proper therapy to address his fixation on these matters – to give himself peace and to stop him having inappropriate discussions with others.

Some on this blog has claimed that Paul was a victim of the unwanted attentions of Father Ronan Drury a native of Mullagh?

Paul has never denied or confirmed this.

I wonder if Drury is interned in Mullagh churchyard?

Somehow, I don’t think that this is the last we will hear of The Very Reverend Paul Prior PP.

MAYNOOTH – THEN AND NOW !!!

Pat, the simple question is this: is this man fit to minister at all given his “curiosities”?

I don’t buy at all that he was abused by Drury – that’s mischief making by faceless goons.
There is absolutely no evidence that RD abused Prior or anyone else.

Drury was obviously an old queen with an “eye” for young men but there isn’t a scintilla of proof that he abused. The man is dead and can’t defend himself in any case.

Even if prying Prior was abused, this does not explain or excuse his own abuse of his position of trust in Rome and Maynooth.

I repeat, can he be trusted to minister? Such “interests” as his don’t tend to wane – therapy or not.

What I would like to know is why a cleric with all these allegations about him could be appointed as a PP at all. Are the allegations credible or not, if they are proved to be true there is only one option Dismissal. If not legal action should be taken against his detractors.

Ah, but you see, no allegations can be proven if no full investigation takes place.

As you say, Pat, Mullagh is near the Cavan/Meath border and not too far from Maynooth. That’s handy and will allow him to keep up with all his old friends and acquaintances in Meath and Maynooth.

Paul Prior was booted out of his job in Maynooth in June 2017 after the disastrous summer of love. Since then he had a few months with the SJs until that ended suddenly.

Apart from the SJs and the short time in Glenfarne what else has he been doing for the past three years? Was he furloughed? Has it just been a lovely three year holiday/retreat while the aul boys serve in parishes? What a farce!

Keenan will stand by him no matter what… he let him back in after his 1st breakdown in seminary. Sings his praises all the time. He will only get away with his good looks for so long

He hasn’t embraced parish life at all, Pat. He would happily be still in Maynooth quizzing the lads about their ejaculations. He was exposed. This is a massive come down for him. He is one very deeply disappointed individual. I’d say indeed we haven’t indeed heard the last of him. A week in Glenfarne? I wonder how long he will last in Mullagh? I wonder is it safe for him to be entrusted with the pastoral care of people.

This allegation that Prior was abused by Ronan Drury is both disturbing and grossly irresponsible.
It is disturbing because Drury is dead and cannot defend himself.
I had no love for RD. I didn’t like him at all. You were one of Drury’s boys or you weren’t. I wasn’t.
Nevertheless, never was it ever hinted or suggested that he was a danger to any seminarian in Maynooth.
No one, except some faceless internet troll or trolls, has ever said this about him. This must cause deep distress indeed to his family and friends.
It is also grossly irresponsible that these anonymous comments are made in regard to Paul Prior.
If a person has been abused, provided it is not a minor and that no one else is in immediate or further danger, then surely the person who has been hurt should be allowed the freedom to disclose what happened and take whatever action they deem appropriate?
For an anonymous person(s) to allege that Ronan Drury abused PP is utterly grotesque. PP has never made this allegation.
PP obviously has serious personal “issues”.
His own behaviour towards seminarians cannot be excused and does not need to explained as a result of alleged abuse by RD.
The whole thing is sick. Drury is dead and Prior has never accused him of any impropriety.
Some anonymous malcontent maliciously makes such a serious accusation – on a blog where it cannot be in any way substantiated – and then slinks back into the outer darkness of cyberspace. It’s immoral and monstrously so at many levels.

Ronan Drury was a bitchy queen who as a young man got himself an extremely soft number and lived a life of ease for decades. He was cruel to those he disliked though he had a fan club of effete sems and priests who cried like babies when he died. He loved being surrounded by young men, had wandering eyes and was a bit handsy, and if he hadn’t used the priesthood as a closet he’d be one of the old ravaged guys with dyed hair and poor hygiene who buy drinks for the twinks in gay bars.

But there were never any allegations of abuse or any hint of it in my whole time in Maynooth. Had there been even a sniff of abuse, Ronan Drury had enough people who couldn’t stand his ways and who would have reported concerns, but nobody ever did.

He gave me the creeps and he should have won 10 Oscars for acting, but he wasn’t an abuser.

Like

Drury was a fine man, and only a homophobe or self-hating gay would right such tripe about him.

Like

Several of you are defining abuse too narrowly. When this area has been invaded (including mentally and emotionally) quite a lot of people are slow to know how to take it forward, because authorities don’t think they have to lend an ear. My reading is that by admission of his defenders RD helped create the atmosphere that destabilised some members of a newer generation of whom several have been written up. Parishioners aren’t under the slightest obligation but the captive audience in a highly charged institution deserves respect. RD’s colleagues perhaps excused themselves / him on grounds of not being nasty to him? There are in any cross section people that aren’t prone. What bishop put RD in place? Who knew what about who? Life was ever thus, but times when principle was bigger got round these problems better.

Official verbal sexual grooming and verbal sexual harassment since the mid 1970s or before, in the Roman church and its tentacles, have totally demoralised countless people and have set a hugely bad example. This is why the young now all, fortunately, walk out of religion at age 16 (if not before). Rome didn’t wish to teach truth, so it didn’t and doesn’t. Those clergy not considerably compromised are at any rate nervous wrecks.

Here is a man who, for many years, was entrusted with a very important responsibility on behalf of the Church and the People of God and what did he do?
He betrayed that trust. He played power games and mind games with some of those seminarians entrusted to his pastoral care.
He asked them invasive questions about their erections, wet dreams and masturbation.
He satisfied his own disordered, lustful and prurient curiosities at the expense of those with whose priestly formation he was charged.
His behaviour was wholly inappropriate and what happens? Without any consequences whatsoever, for the debris he left in Rome and Maynooth, without any regard for the further concerns that arose when he was a Jesuit “novice”, without so much as a ‘by your leave’, for the scandal caused, he saunters into Mullagh as Parish Priest.
You couldn’t make it up. The Irish bishops are a thundering disgrace.
Paul Prior was one of those who presided over the demise of Maynooth and the pouring down the drain of Ireland’s priestly vocations.
And there are no consequences for his actions and behaviour whatsoever.
No doubt there are few enough young male faces in the congregations at Mullagh and Cross. Any that are left need to be extremely guarded and wary around the new PP.

If the parishioners of Mullagh and Cross google their new PP they will find lots of interesting stuff. Plenty of topics for conversation when they bump into Paulette in the Centra: “I hear you’ve a great interest in erections, Father?”

Paul Prior was disowned by Mullaney and his network. The fact is Maynooth and SJ’s have rejected him as damaged goods. Yes the therapy has temporarily helped him with his urges but the threat of relapse is always present.

Dying this morning, had a bit of a sore head yesterday after celebrating the news of Paul’s appointment. Had a few yesterday afternoon to steady up and got to thinking how Mullagh will be the best parish in Ireland in 6 months, mass attendances through the roof, a stream of vocations, at least one apparition and fundraising that will leave Fr Dick in the shade. Sure I had to throw another party.

Was there much difference between Prior and Marsden, or were they both grand inquisitors in their own way?

Like

Both Prior and Marsden are men with their own issues and problems, particularly an obsession with sexual matters, masturbation, genitals, sexual thoughts, and generally anything connected to the loins. They should not be let near any young men in formation, indeed I wonder if it is right that they are in any kind of ministry at all, where they are able to indulge their own inadequacies and fantasies at the expense of the vulnerable.

If any of these allegations are true, surely the people who “carry deep scars” may have been mentally retarded howsoever mild that is or may have been. You have to ask yourself, what adult man allows another to do what has been described in the article. Remember this was not the 1930-1970 period – I thought the Irish had developed, matured and woke up to know right from wrong, in that case why did they not leave immediately and know the institution for what it was? All sounds very voyeuristic. I hope the men who carry these scars are able to heal. Anyone compos mentis would refuse to answer any perverted questions. They were not held under duress, they could have walked out the door at any time. The Church is peculiar – as Pat you found out too – it doesn’t fall under the workplace relations – if it did the men could have had a case heard before a tribunal – as the Church is not an employer they do not fall under the legislation. Very tragic.

Romans lost the contraception battle (for the time being) in the 1920s, the orientation battle in the 1940s, in the 1960s media substituted for relating generally, since the 1980s only nuclear relationships exist. One can’t be a Christian if single, or non clergy, or not climbing up in one of those various many “sodality” thingys. The CCC just confuses. There isn’t supposed to be maturing in personality and integrity. Confession is now solely about readmission to smarties (which are “confected”). People who never knew how to do fashionably complicated prayers aren’t being taught to pray plainly.

RCs teach each other to attach too much value to connections, which English people in particular don’t usually have. In lurid powder-keg like outbreaks some people get incited by some other people (with authority) to talk salaciously and / or mount stunts (the stuff of TV comedies, but not funny in real life). Safeguarding is no longer part of pastoring and is now confined to under 16s only. Bishops are told they are home and dry but are the most vulnerable (to being got at) of the lot.

Mysticism, mystique and mysteriousness rule (sometimes dressed up as the opposite). Intensity unbalances. Respect for conscience isn’t pushed by the biggest RC authorities. A promise of belief in Scripture is too often used as mere bait. Nuisance movements have fizzled out, late in the day. Promising new phenomena get diverted, to enhance the image of something (in someone’s eyes) and there is a lot of trying to impress. Kind hearted onlookers don’t get told enough to help those who came off badly.

When clergy and laity as a whole become equipped to look after each other more and better, we will get back to what was the best of Catholicism from any period. This won’t get sorted out by shallow, faddish, intrusive, imposed “exploring of sexuality” to titillate higher ups and (maybe) embarrass other higher ups. This has got to stop being seen to be about point scoring or enhancing brand names. Everyone has got to help get us out (again) from this recurrent spiral.

This appointment is an outrage. In any other walk of life where there is accountability, Prior would be suspended, under investigation, sacked – for gross, intrusive, and highly questionable behaviour that crossed a whole range of professional boundaries. But, professionalism does not seem to apply to the clerical classes with their much vaunted notion of exceptionalism, unaccountability and untouchability. Outrageous ! I doubt if Prior, in keeping with many clergy, is properly qualified or accredited in anything, but if he does belong to any professional associations or bodies, I would wage them to have a look at his practice and behaviour and take whatever action they can take if they find that he behaved improperly or inappropriately in his dealings with seminarians / students. I know from my own professional experience that even a whiff of what appears to have happened in Maynooth with Prior would have been taken very seriously and there would have been the appropriate accountability and investigation. That’s the way professionals work. But, as I have said before, the vast majority of clergy are just amateurs, badly trained, badly led, and yet with a incredible sense of their own privilege. That illusion will rapidly fall around them in years to come, and already we see that various secular authorities are no longer willing to give them or the Church leeway and to treat them exceptionally.

I too when discerning a vocation was asked by the vocations director about why I didnt share about my thoughts around sexuality, sex, porn, masturbation like the other men in the group. I was taken really back because I was not expecting to be asked this when I went to seek support. On reflection I sensed this man was unhappy, angry and seemed to be asking the inappropriate question based upon his own struggles and clearly not mine at the time. Unfortunately the formation system and its directors are unregulated by an external body and these types of unethical practice/antics will continue in the church again and again. Sad but true.

It’s the whole underlying foundation of the RCC, and other religions, I strongly criticise, and their unwarranted assumptions of veracity, primacy, and consequent duplicitous taking advantage worldwide for personal or organisational benefit.
I have yet to see ANY evidence for any God’s existence. That some persons religious beliefs motivate them or their organisations into charitable behaviour is no proof of the existence of their religious focus, on God, saints, or an afterlife.

Why are seminary staff who are untrained carry out pseudo-psychology methods on candidates? In the Dublin Diocese all prospective candidates are sent for an independent psychological assessment. As far back as 2008 the then independent clinical psychologist described some of the testing that is carried out on candidates – remember this is a clinical psychologist: applicant’s attitude to the testing, experience of early family life, level of functioning intelligence, judgment and main positive behavioural qualities. Furthermore, discovery of the presence or absence of psychopathology, maturity-at-age, ego strength, emotional quotient, value pattern, motivational index, interpersonal strengths and weaknesses, psychosexual integration, attitude to authority, leadership ability, addiction potential, quality and depth of spirituality, conscious and subconscious vocational motivation and the applicant’s level of personal insight.
Do they then need to have an untrained idiot carry out pseudo-psychology? In Dublin a candidate is re-tested in year three and again before ordination.
The Jesuits send prospects to St. Luke’s Centre in Manchester – why then are people a) being admitted who are clearly not suitable and b) later assessed by individual seminarian priest-staff? Was Paul referred to St. Luke’s as part of his admission to the novitiate? If yes, did they report anything that should have then raised a flag for the novice master or if not, why not? Perhaps there was nothing to note in their report.
Remember the reports are part of the assessment, the decision rests always with the bishop or novice master regarding admission to formation.
If the diocesan and religious institutes carried out pre due-diligence correctly it would save everyone a lot of time and money and candidates long term well-being.

Like

Surely somebody long associated with formation would be aware of what not to say in the assessment. For example you wouldn’t say ‘I like quizzing young men about their sex lives’.
There also has to be an element of frankness and openness for any assessment to work. Things like psychopathy are notoriously difficult for people to accept in their own lives.

In the early 1980s Maynooth appointed as Junior Dean a postgraduate priest student who was living in the college as a student. That was widely considered a disaster and lead to a collapse in discipline nearly as bad as had occured in the 1970s. McGinnity was Senior Dean but he was a weak man too so there was a real sense of drift, which led ultimately to the relative tightening of discipline in the 1980s.

The problem was that the new Junior Dean appointed straight from being a student was that he was just ordained and had virtually no experience at all of being a priest. The appointment of Prior as Dean in Rome fitted into the same category.

Prior was a dull and plodding sem student. He minced around Maynooth like a plain and prim little madam and you wouldn’t have heard a squeak out of him. He simpered rather than actually communicated.
His sudden transformation, after ordination, into someone qualified for such a vital role in priestly formation, is truly a puzzle.

That is my recollection of him too. He simpered about, smiled wanely, didn’t say boo to a goose and was undistinguished in every way apart from the bizarre habit of underwear showing, a habit he kept hidden from the deans. In those more innocent times it was considered odd laughable and embarrassing but it would be taken very seriously now.

He was taken under the wing of Niall Ahern, with whom he has a slight physical resemblance. Paul amused Niall with girly chat and student gossip, but Paul’s later prominence is mainly due to the exercise of raw patronage by Sean Brady which catapulted this unremarkable man to be director of formation first in Rome and then in the biggest seminary in the world, for a church convulsed by scandal and a seminary in retreat which needed much stronger characters in charge of formation than he, cynical Hugh Connolly and grey man Mullaney, whose career is also inexplicable.
