SILVERSTREAM MAKES INTERNATIONAL NEWS

Kirby

Sep 23, 2020 by Christopher White NCR

A monastery in Ireland founded by a U.S.-born Benedictine monk — whose popular, though scrutinized, theological writings have been heralded by a number of leading traditionalist church prelates, including Cardinal Raymond Burke, Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò and Texas Bishop Joseph Strickland — has been subject to a canonical visitation.

NCR has obtained a copy of the visitation decree of Silverstream Priory. Signed on May 2 by Bishop Thomas Deenihan of Meath, Ireland, and Vicar General Fr. Declan Hurley, the decree says those overseeing the visitation would be “paying special attention to concerns recently raised regarding the community dynamic.”

A five-page report on the visitation, also obtained by NCR, enumerates concerns about the financial management of the monastery and the structure of its community life.

Silverstream was founded in 2012 in the Meath Diocese by Prior Mark Daniel Kirby, who moved to Ireland from Tulsa, Oklahoma, with another professed monk after being unable to find a suitable property to establish his community in the United States.

Martin Long, director of the Catholic Communications Office of the Irish bishops’ conference, framed the visitation as a routine event. He also told NCR that the diocese had received a sexual misconduct complaint against Kirby but that the allegation was not related to the visitation and that the priest has denied any wrongdoing.

“Silverstream does not belong to a monastic congregation. Before 2017 it was an ‘association’ and not an Institute of Consecrated Life,” Long told NCR in an email. “It is usual for a monastery to have a visitation at least every four years and, earlier this year, Silverstream had its first visitation as a Diocesan Institute of Consecrated Life.”

Mercy Sr. Sharon Euart, a noted canon lawyer who is the executive director of the Resource Center for Religious Institutes, said that a visitation has historically been used “as an administrative tool to address a problem in order to remedy the situation.”
“A visitation is often a response to a concern or a complaint in order to correct a situation,” Euart, who is also a former associate general secretary of the U.S. bishops’ conference, told

“Generally, a visitation may occur when the bishop or superior such as a dicastery of the Holy See has become aware of a situation that may need to be changed for the good of the community and/or church,” she continued. “Visitations have been made to dioceses, seminaries, religious institutes or monasteries.”

Euart said that following a visitation, the findings will either stay with a diocesan bishop or will go to the Holy See if further action is needed.
According to the decree, a three-person team consisting of Benedictine Abbot Brendan Coffey of Glenstal Abbey, Trappist Abbot Richard Purcell of Mount Melleray Abbey, and Msgr. Gearoid Dullea of the Diocese of Cork and Ross were assigned to conduct the visitation, which took place June 9-12.

In their report, the three visitators say they are “very concerned about your current financial situation and the economic viability of the monastery.”
“Your income last year was only 50% of what it was in each of the three previous years, but your expenses have been increasing by 20% each year, over the last four years,” they state.

The report says that over 2.5 million euros ($3 million) have been spent purchasing and renovating property at the monastery from 2016 to 2019. It also says that the visitators spoke to the monastery’s auditor, who expressed concern “about your tendency to spend all the money you have and not put anything into reserve.”

The report states that going forward, Silverstream must produce an annual budget that is voted on and approved by the monastery.

Long told NCR that at present there are 15 members of the Silverstream community, 13 of whom are currently in residence.

“The role of Superior and that of Confessor, in particular, need to be kept separate,” the visitators wrote. “It is very unwise for any Superior to hear the confession of his subordinates,” they state, adding that Pope Francis has recently reiterated this position.

Among the other concerns outlined in the report are the need for recorded minutes from chapter meetings and votes, and the need to improve the communication between the monastery and the diocese when it comes to safeguarding children and the required annual child protection audit.

In recent months, Kirby’s writings, which inspired the formation of the monastery, have come under scrutiny. He is the alleged author of In Sinu Jesu: When Heart Speaks to Heart: The Journal of a Priest at Prayer, a popular spiritual bestseller that, although published anonymously as written by “A Benedictine Monk,” is a compilation of his own private revelations and meditations on his personal blog.

NCR has also confirmed with a source close to Silverstream that Kirby is the sole author of the text, which is sold out in the monastery’s bookstore and promoted as authored by a member of its community. The text has been praised by Viganò, a former Vatican ambassador to the U.S. and one of Francis’ leading critics. Viganò called it “a great consolation.”

In a 2013 interview, Kirby discussed the monastery’s “commitment to the traditional forms of the sacred Liturgy, celebrated worthily, in Latin and Gregorian chant.”

“Like all Benedictine monks, we open the sacred Scriptures daily, in lectio divina, to discover there, shining through every page, as if through the ‘lattice-work’ of the text (Cant. 2:10), the adorable Face of Christ,” he said at the time.

According to Long, Kirby remains a priest in good standing and is currently on sick leave in Dublin and has resigned his post as superior.

Kirby, said Long, “has suffered from long-standing health issues and has tendered his resignation as Prior of Silverstream on the basis of his poor health. His resignation has been accepted and it is expected that Dom Mark will return to Silverstream Priory as a member of the community in due course.”

Long told NCR that the sexual misconduct complaint against Kirby was made by a monk who no longer resides at Silverstream.

“This was referred to the civil authorities and Father Kirby has denied any wrongdoing,” said Long. “No further action has been taken by the civil authorities to the best of our knowledge.”

Deenihan, the bishop of Meath, has appointed Coffey, who led the visitation, to serve as administrator of the monastery. According to Long, no member of the community has the required number of vowed years to make them eligible to serve as superior.

Long, who responded to NCR on behalf of Coffey and Deenihan, confirmed that the visitation remains open “until the bishop decides to close it.”

PAT SAYS

This week the Silverstream scandal hit the international media with an article published by the National Catholic Reporter.

This article relies heavily on the propaganda put out by the Irish Catholic Bishop’s Conference propagandist Martin Long.

Long tries to make out all is well 😆

But he does not address:

1. The copious statements made by the whistle-blower monk to the Garda, Tom Dennihan and the Charity Commission.

2. The allegations of sexual impropriety by Kirby.

3. The missing money.

All that is yet to come.

And it will be published on this blog in the very near future.

Pat, just watching the hag McAleese on BBC. Jesus, age has not been kind to her. Oil of Olay needed by the gallon.

@11:15pm: Your comment is both sexist and ageist.
In calling you out on this, I am doing one of the many sensible and necessary things she said, and I quote it as best I can from memory: “Men need to recognise and call out sexism when other males make sexist comments in what they think is a safe place among themselves.”

9.27: Sadly, MMM, you should fire your anger at Pat. He facilitates this horrible misogyny, sexism and ageism. The effeminate name callling of men, the bitch fest of ugly commentary, the nasty descriptions of men, often very sexual on this blog, are all conducive to encouraging and inviting comments in the shape of ageism, bigotry, sexism. I know priests are not popular on this blog but the dehumanizing, degradation, objectyfying and sexualusing of these men in feminine adjectives is revealing of a sick mind. The constant de-dignifying of priests is disgusting. Whatever about personal foibles, eccentricities and mannerisms, the effeminising of men on this blog is nauseating. Perhaps, it’s a particularly gay thing to do, but it is tiresome, unwelcome and morally sick.

A@3:20: I agree with your comment on referring to clerics by using derogatory feminine terms. I have previously criticised +Pat on this blog for his collusion in this practice. I have also pointed out to him that his own “loose” terminology colludes in encouraging corrosive derogatory comments of a highly personal nature. He chose to publish my comment, but ignored its request with an insipid “justification”, and his comment at 3:20 today is similar.
The general tone of the blog is much degraded of late by both this effete trend and the clerical personalised bitchfesting. I think that may have lost us some valuable commentators. Again Pat, please consider your practice. While those of us who value your exposes may “make allowances”, your detractors seize all means to ridicule and deride you.
We can be critical while avoiding such practices. While I try to, I may not always succeed and regret if my indignation occasionally affects my judgement in this respect.

It is an absolute in religious life that the superior doesn’t hear the community’s confessions. If Kirby has been doing that he really is off the rails. He has been in several monasteries and has no excuse for not knowing that is asking for trouble.
That in itself speaks volumes of what Silverstream is like.
I don’t think the Annunciation Congregation, to which Glenstal belongs, even has a trad monastery who could provide a superior. I just have this awful feeling they might look to Farnborough…. 😂

Like

There are 15 in the community, of which two are absent. Kirby is in Dublin and another monk, presumably the complainant, is also absent. The 13 other monks don’t have enough vowed years to be the new superior. The only one other than Kirby who would meet that requirement is his sub-prior, Fr Benedict Andersen. As he is not in the priory (if he were, he could take over), that suggests that Fr Anderson is the one alleging sexual misconduct.

Like

Fr Anderson is the co founder with Kirby and was ordained a priest by Mickey Smith the bishop of Meath.

It’s bad form that Martin Long’s statement makes it possible to work out who the complainant was. That’s not very professional by the press office.

Catholicism in Ireland benefits from a historical attachment of the people, in the context of British occupation, and no other source of authority to look to. “But the Angelus Bell o’er the Liffey’s swell rang out through the foggy dew”. We can look at that positively, indeed nostalgically, in terms of the contribution of the church over the centuries to supporting the native Irish. We can also look at it in terms of how, as a people, we gave power to an institution who abused it and continue to abuse it. I think Pat has the balance right, in that the institution has proven itself without doubt to be rotten. The question is what about the good guys inside the institution, who are doing their best. I think these guys are more normal than Pat. He has authority issues and has difficulty with the concept of compromise. Good to a point, but imagine everyone in the assembly was a Jim Allister. I am convinced that a majority of current priests are simply good men trying their best and trying to make the best of a flawed institution. In this forum we should remember that there are a population of people out there who are not lessened because they don’t fight publicly with their bishop but who simply focus on doing the best they can in the limited circumstances they find themselves in.

I agree, people are used to sex and money scandals involving the Church and its clergy. Even worse, it has what they have come to expect and it has the same news and shock value as “dog bites man”.

Maybe they should bring this Silverstream business and the Purcell shenanigans to the direct attention of Pope Francis ? He seems to act swiftly and decisively, as we saw yesterday with the ‘resignation’ of Cardinal Becciu over some financial mismanagement scandal (although in reality he has been sacked), and he also acted pretty swiftly over McCarrick in the end. He might see though all the stuff with Silverstream and Purcell and wield the knife and cut these characters adrift. At the moment it is the case that these characters have gone to ground, and the usual process is that after a period of silence they would return in some form or fashion. Not good enough ! There needs to be swift action, and they need to be moved on, if there is evidence of wrongdoing that in any other walk of life would warrant action. So, + Pat, write directly to Francis about these two and let’s see what happens.

Like

Francis says “Who am I to judge?” about the scandalous Ricca, and he rehabilitated Barros, Daaneels, McCarrick and Zanchetta, and he is still sitting on the McCarrick report. I wouldn’t pin your hopes on him.

It is good that these very strong, robust recommendations were made by the visitators to Silverstream. It is also good to know that civil authorities were informed about the allegation of sexual misconduct. We should not ignore this fact. The dynamics of this community need further reorganizing. It was based too much on Dom Kirby. I hope this community can be reformed and renewed. As for references about Martin Long: very nasty and totally vindictive. The judgments are a lie. I wish the Monks of Silverstream God’s blessings at this time of challenge in their lives and hope they will find healing and peace.

I didn’t know it was that much. That’s a great salary in Irish media terms. I meant it’s a horrible job dealing with a sucession of stories involving filth and abuse, trying to combat social change, and spinning decline and dealing with a highly sceptical/hostile media and having few good stories to tell. The Catholic Communications Office is reactive and their hearts must sink when the phone rings.

I visited Silverstream on a few occasions and net some of the Monks. They were very friendly and seemed like men in deep contemplation. I enjoyed my time but I had a feeling that Dom Kirby was a man of one dimension and having watched his video about the monastery I thought he was too much at the centre of everything. With any new religious movement there is always the danger of one person being the focus of all aspects of life. This happened with Dom Kirby and has had very negative consequences for the community. I feel a great sorrow for the men I met. I hope and pray that they can be reformed and find peace and healing. I hope too that the truth of what really occurred will be named and that appropriate action is taken. When this community was formed I was delighted but now I am praying for this community. May it be wisely guided by the Holy Spirit.

Like

Guided by the ‘Holy Spirit’? What the hell does that mean, in practice? Usually, ‘let’s see what unfolds and put a divine imprimatur on it to gain wide licence and acceptance’.

In truth, that ‘guidance’ is as reliable as closing the eyes and randomly sticking a pin on a horse in the 3.30. 😕

Hey! 😀 Did you read the post at 4.29? ☺

Probably every Catholic parish that was ‘gifted’ with a kiddie-fiddling Romanist priest on the move, yet again, was told, or would have been told, much the same thing: that the ‘Holy Spirit’ had brought these criminals and deviants to them and to their children

The ‘guidance of the “Holy Spirit” ‘ is, historically, nothing more base than the will of the clergy. It was, and remains, their way of ensuring deference, and unquestioning obedience, to corrupt wills.

If there is such ‘guidance’, then the ‘Holy Spirit’ has a lot to answer for , including ‘vocating’ perverts and paedophiles/ephebophiles to the priesthood, and of installing hypocrites, and paedophile/ephebophile protectors. like popes Benedict and JPII. (And the rest. 😕)

Save your contempt, priest, for yourself and for your degenerate church. They have much greater claim to it. 😆

You know, reading this blog has made me think – so what ? I’m beginning to be of the mind that all the stuff we go on about is pretty irrelevant to the vast majority of people, who have simply accepted that the Church and its hierarchy and clergy are a dodgy lot, and just carry on and work around them. Nothing surprises people anymore. Abbot doing bareback sex in a gay sauna ? Abbot doing financial mismanagement with a bit of novice abuse on the side ? Cardinal involved in mega millions property scandal in London ? Captain Underpants and his inordinate interest in underwear and seminarians masturbation activities ? Ballsanella and his tight chinos and good looks ? Various Littlemaniples swishing around doing traditionalist liturgy and getting all excited about lace ? You know, I think people have gone beyond that, and just accept that it happens and treat it with the indifference that it deserves, and just get on with their own lives and making their own decisions. The Church and its clergy are increasingly irrelevant to people, if mildly diverting on occasion. However, abuse of children, lies and coverup….well, that is something we will not forget and will forever hold the Church accountable for.

The bishops and clergy have only themselves to blame for their increasing irrelevance. I know that they will want to turn it on the laity and say that they have lost the faith, but the truth is the laity now know what their bishops and clergy are like and get up to. They will accept certain ministries and services from them, but their priest is no longer the person to whom they will turn when they need help, counsel, advice etc. They go elsewhere. Clergy have become functionaries that provide certain things, but are no longer central to people’s lives of faith. And all this has been occasioned by the clergy and bishops themselves, who have rather enjoyed their clerical status and looked after each other. When people know that, they no longer trust them. + Elsie might as well appoint a donkey to the Westminster role; it makes no difference. People will take what they want, and leave the rest aside, including the new administrator. Probably the congregation at Westminster will rapidly diminish because it’s jewel in the crown, the music, has been disembowelled of late by Vincent’s decisions. It’s not a happy ship.

He certainly isn’t spineless, and he is exceedingly pastoral with those he ministers to (no fascist tendencies either as suggested by an earlier commenter). This was clear in the cathedral and he was a great parish priest in Enfield. Enfield’s loss is the cathedral’s gain.

6.38 that’s coded propaganda speak. A kind of demeaning bragging they get themselves locked into.

@7.57pm They did say the description of Bishop Kieran Conry and Cardinal O’Brien wasn’t one they recognised at the time either along with Eamon Casey, Michael Cleary et al.

I’m inclined to think that dear old Monty might have his uses after all : in vino veritas and so on. Also, though I think Monty is foolish, he is probably pretty harmless and could be retained as the type of cleric who is good with old ladies.

I’m glad of the warning that Mary McMeMeMeAleese is on the Late Late. If she popped up without warning I’d have got sick into my mask.

Gosh, what a repetetive boring joke. Don’t you hate people like this wally who tells you the same crap jokes over and over and you pretend to laugh.

Twelve priests were about to be ordained. The final test was for them to line up in a straight row, totally nude, in a garden while a beautiful, big breasted, nude model danced before them.
Each priest had a small bell attached to his penis and they were told that anyone whose bell rang when she danced in front of them would not be ordained because he had not reached a state of spiritual purity.
The beautiful model danced before the first candidate, with no reaction.
She proceeded down the line with the same response from all the priests until she got to the final priest, Carlos.
As she danced, his bell began to ring so loudly that it flew off and fell clattering to the ground.
Embarrassed, Carlos took a few steps forward and bent over to pick it up…
Then all the other bells started to ring.

You have bullied him off social media and made his life a misery. Surely if he hasn’t appeared in Rome you got what you wanted. Time to give up and check into the psychiatric hospital?

It’s a… well, let’s just say, bi-monthly newsletter, so November should not be interesting. It’s the final of The Great British Bake Off.

I know this sounds like heresy, Bp Pat, but I think Dom Richard Purcell is rather fanciable. It’s not his fault,

Has Fr John Walsh OP prior of St Saviour’s house of studies Dublin met with Dom Richard Purcell OCSO since the latter’s visit to Glencairn where Fr Walsh was on retreat?

Bp Pat are Mark and Richard second cousins? Having drawn “uncertainties” would Mark go & see if there were available chances in Richard’s neighbourhood?
It’s clever changing the format of his organisation before a “visitation” became very much overdue, and just before a new bishop came in who doesn’t know why he is lumbered with this thing.
