MY CONVERSATION WITH THE CISTERCIAN ABBOT GENERAL.

Eamon Fitzgerald

Below is the Abbot General’s email to me.

Below you will see my attempt to telephone the Abbot General who was staying at Mount Mellary. I got through to an answering machine and did not leave a message. Instead I sent the AG another email.

Call to AG AT 6.30 PM

The AG rang me from the Mount Mellary number. For some reason it came up as “potential fraud” on my mobile but my new mobile seems to regard unknown numbers as potential fraud.

As you can see the AG and I spoke for 18 minutes and 36 seconds – not a short call by any means.

It was during this conversation the AG surprised me by telling me of the incident involving Fr Purcell in Roscrea. I said to the AG: “I’m a bit shocked you are being so honest with me”.

He replied: “Well I am talking to a bishop”.

He then told me that he had already asked the Cistercian Procurator General to send him Fr Purcell’s file which is kept in the Generalate.

In all of this I have been acting in good faith.

I have had a lifetime connection to the Cistercians especially at Mellifont Abbey.

I had cone to regard the Cistercians as special and an example for the rest of us priests to emulate. For that reason I expect more from a Cistercian monks and priests than I do from other priests.

Of course I do understand that like all of us they are sinners and human beings.

The Church is very corrupt and has gone astray and I regarded the Cistercians as the prayerful power house of possible purification and renewable.

I would truly be shocked to discover that the Cistercian bottom line is the bottom line of the rest of the RCC – “mental reservation”, plausible deniability, slight of hand, now you see it and now you don’t politics.

A priest friend of mine calls the RCC indoctrination we all got as “the medicine”.

He always says to me: “You’ve taken too much of the medicine”.

Maybe I have? Maybe part of me is still very niaive ?

But as I said the other day:

“If the Cistercians are at it – then there’s no hope”. šŸ¤¤

What next?

Just been watching some old TV re-runs of Father Ted. I missed seeing them first time around. They’re portrayal of clerics is so ridiculously idiotic. But surely there’s an underlying truth reality in that they portray a common perception of just how laughable the whole RCC relevance and their clerics are now regarded.

Iā€™m old enough to remember how Dermot Morgan was vilified for how he depicted the clergy. He said himself there was no way he could have got it made in Ireland. How many would find it shocking now?

Like

Father Ted is benign compared to whats really happening.

The majority of the presbyterate will be in bed today with other gentlemen.

Like

Isn’t it based on the “clergy revues” the clergy themselves used to put on in some parishes, Boxing Day week?

Like

Lots of Irish people think Fr Ted was an RTE production, perhaps because RTE endlessly repeats it. Channel 4 made it.

Like

I don’t think anyone can find it shocking, in fact it’s prophetic. For example it shows priests as stupid. Priests regularly comment on here that seminarians capable of a degree are few and far between these days. And this is priests admitting priests live up to their depiction in Fr Ted!

Like

Forget degrees. Let them just believe, say their prayers and try and practice what they preach.

I agree with you, Pat, though in my seminary days, I considered obtaining a university degree as a rite of passage to priesthood.
A friend of mine in seminary was asked by German seminarians on temporary study placement what his degree was in. He answered that he didn’t have one, adding that if he left seminary with honours in spirituality, he’d be happy. The German seminarian was taken aback, not by the reference to spirituality, but by the fact that my friend was unlettered. Unfortunately, this decent man, my friend, went on to commit suicide some years after ordination. There were no accusations of that sort against him; in fact, there were no accusations against him of any kind. It was, as idiom has it, just one of those things.
I never found out why my friend committed suicide, and I’ll never speculate about it. His anniversary is this month.

Patsy donā€™t you think the AG who was having a conversation with you and was telling you about Roscrea, when you said you were surprised he being so honest, and he said well youā€™re a bishop. He must have thought you were a recognized Bishop not an illicit one, I donā€™t think he had any idea of who you were at that time. Heā€™s probably found out who you are now. Thatā€™s why youā€™ll never hear from him again.

12.10: MMM. I am disappointed that you continue to perpetuate a ridiculing caricature about priests. There is no necessity to do so. Criticism is fine but a continuing narrative of jeering and derision is very childish, particularly when you repeat the same ad nauseam. What fulfilment do you get smacking us to pieces?

Like

10.12

Traditionally, Roman Catholic clerics have not taken criticism well, especially the Vatican, such is there overweening sense of self-importance and rightness; they lacked the very quality for which they berated othersā€™ apparent lack, or urged them to cultivate for themselves

When men repeatedly wonā€™t listen to others, the next step is to make them objects of ridicule; but it isnā€™t the final step.

You people brought this on yourselves. Had you (to use that now preposterous title, ā€˜Christmenā€™, made of priests by Fr Gerard McGinnity), you wouldnā€™t find yourselves where you now are: largely ignored, if not detested.

I have no sympathy with you people.

Go weep on someone elseā€™s shoulder, you self-pitying priest.

If all Irish priests, regardless of age, were offered ā‚¬ 2000 a month for life pension upon resignation I think very many of them would apply.

Anon@10:12: Comments below coincide with my views on the majority of Irish Catholic clergy. They really are a pathetic lot, so full of their own pomposity and self importance, and fail to appreciate just how irrelevant they’ve become to a majority of people. I like the comment: “Objects of ribaldry” It nicely sums them up. Why shouldn’t we mock the clergy? What’s so special about them that they demand respect without earning it? I say the clergy brought the common derisive view upon themselves.
Their religious rigmarole is a charade. Would that civil authorities take up +Pat’s comment, offer clerics a retirement pension, and let rites of passage ceremonies evolve as secular affairs bringing together people of different faith beliefs and none.

It sounds to me as though this matter of Abbot Purcell does not involve safeguarding issues, or matters that contravene the State law, and therefore there is no reason for State authorities / police to be involved. It concerns the consensual sexual activity of two gay men in a gay sauna. These matters are, therefore rightly, within the domain of Church law and custom, and will be dealt with therein. I suspect, therefore, that we will not hear a great deal about it, other than perhaps (as the Abbot General has said) these concerns / allegations have been noted. It is up to the AG and the OCSOs under canon law to take these matters forward. There really isnā€™t any rightful place for involvement of external authorities or us at the the moment. We have to leave it to them. However, such is our experience of the way the Church usually deals with these matters ā€“ ignoring them, stalling, covering up, denial, moving people about etc ā€“ that it is right for + Pat to keep a watching brief on what is happening in order to prod the Church authorities, the OCSOs in particular, to move this matter forward as quickly as possible. I would suggest that + Pat undertakes that role quietly and privately in communication with the Abbot General and others, and is circumspect in what he puts on this blog. If the AG and others feel that they cannot have conversations with + Pat about these matters for fear that everything that is said is put on this blog, then they will be inclined to cut contact and communication with + Pat. So, by all means keep a watching brief and encourage them to address these matters, to take action, and at the right time to communicate that action to us, in a fair, open, transparent, respectful and just way. That seems the right way forward to me. Itā€™s not letting them off the hook, its not avoiding holding them to accountability, itā€™s not encouraging them to go quiet and hope it will all go away. Itā€™s a means to an end, ensuring accountability, transparency and justice in this matter. In addition, Purcell needs to be open and honest with the AG and the OCSOs about his behaviour and activity.

Like

You are right. It is not a matter for safeguarding.
But it is a matter of great public interest.
It is also a matter of the RCC proclaiming transparency but not practising it.
The matter is mow with the AG andbhis Council.

Like

Well, letā€™s give the AG and the OCSOs a bit of time to look in to the matter and do the right thing. If they donā€™t, if they stall, if they coverup ā€“ well, then I suggest you let rip and tell all. How much time to give them ? I would say one month for an initial investigation and implementation of some measures. Of course, if Purcell is completely innocent, then an apology is due. But, I suspect that there is something about his behaviour that stands in start contrast to his professed way of life and role as Abbot. So, questions have been asked, we await the answers within a month.

Some of the public unquestionably are interested. But even those who arenā€™t may not necessarily be unconcerned, and otherwise unaffected by these scandals, or by unconfirmed reports of them.

If any person believes that the public no longer cares what Catholic clergy get up to in private (or in public: in laybys and urinals), he needs to think again.

It is probably true that most Catholics have become so innured to hearing of sexual malfeasance among their clergy that they no longer are shocked by it, and by the hypocrisy and lies that must accompany it.

Most Catholics, I suspect, now consider these behaviours fairly normative for the clergy. It would take a great deal worse to recreate the shock caused by early scandals involving these men, something as grave, say, as satanic child sacrifice, or the sacrifice, through abortion, of a conception or two inconvenient for a heterosexually active priest. Impossible? Time will tell.

What a terrible indictment against Catholic clergy, of whom most in the 21st century, and after an almost unbroken succession of clerical scandals, still actually believe that each, through ordination, is an ā€˜alter Christusā€™:ontologically changed and configured to Christ. The extent and depth of this grand delusion is thrown into ever greater relief by each confirmed scandal involving the clergy, and now even by unsubstantiated reports of them, which, I suspect, most people would regard as de facto truth precisely because they have been predisposed to do so by the almost constant revelation of clerical malfeasance.

If nothing else, surely it ought to be a cause of concern for every Christian that the faith of countless numbers is being hacked to pieces by the gentlemen in clerical collars, and their indifference to this should not be anyone elseā€™s.

The sooner the world rids itself of the moral contamination that is Romanist priesthood, so much the better.

He does admit that ‘the deacon’s ministry is one of service (and then, by way of emphasis, he adds after a comma), to the bishop…’ And of course, this is what ALL Romanist orders are about: service of men, not of God. And it is why the Church historically has lurched from one scandal to the next, all because Jesus never intended a priesthood. This deacon, like all ordained men in the Church, is acting contrary to the will of God.
Chronic self-deception almost inevitalbly has a parallel history of self-delusion, and our deacon expresses his admirably:
‘By ordination a man’s state is changed and it becomes his means of sanctification…’

Thatā€™s his misfortune but Itā€™s all resolvable through therapy. I have never encountered anyone exhibiting such bizarre, irrational and destructive behaviour or who seems totally incapable of human decency. That aside, the blog issue for today would seem to me to be an onslaught on elderly Cistercians who, having spent their lives in quiet, peace, prayer, manual work and inner contemplation, now have to witness their lives being torn to shreds because one of their members has made foolish decisions. We can sometimes be borribly merciless and unkind. I have spent time in all the Cistercian guest houses for almost 40 years and have been blessed by their prayer, wise counselling and intimacy with God. I hope and pray that it wonā€™t result in the Abbey having to close before itā€™s time although it will probably happen eventually as there are so few monks and no vocations. It will be a big loss as anyone who has ever been there will tell you what a wonderful place it is

Like

@10:29 you are what monks refer to as a ‘monastery hopper’ – and these people are always seen as pains.
Your personal comments about Magna Carta are laughable when your intention is obviously to distract from the pretend monastic life lived by a senior figure of the Irish Cistercians.
Obviously the monastic peace you have delusionally shared has not entered you, (unfortunate image there) when you are so free to throw a man who has suffered under the bus.

Like

I am very glad you can still be shocked after all this time, Pat.
In fact abbots living double lives end their monasteries themselves. The Rule is plain that the monk should love chastity and while obviously anyone will find it difficult to be chaste, those who are not should not be major superior!
Given that the monk given as aide to the abbot general was born in 1935, it would suggest the whole order is in trouble.
Knowing how the church functions I would bet on Purcell being the next abbot general!
It goes to show that much of the value in this blog is in exposure. Nobody can go into those places without knowing what is going on and thus victims of dysfunctional religious life are reduced.
Thank you for this essential ministry, bishop.

Like

@12:23 a very good comment. I read further up this blog where someone was trying to encourage Bishop Pat to lay off and the the Cistercians sort it themselves. No. Pat needed and needs to apply pressure. Experience has thought that these ā€˜clericsā€™ only act when they are exposed or under public scrutiny. It is a complete sham. Someone said the Abbot was saying mass this morning? That says it all really. Keep up the work Pat and expose these hypocrites. There would be a queue to join the priesthood and/or Orders if gay men knew they can get the hole as often as they want it. Many actively gay priests decide to only ride other clerics but this one appears to be something of a loose cannon and has definitely given rise to scandal.

Enniskillen people will also be familiar with the case in the local Convent of Mercy involving a female lay domestic staff member who was a general skivvy and dogsbody for the nuns in the convent attached to the school. Bishop Buckley. Iā€™m a Parishioner of St Clareā€˜s, Glasgow. Our Church is in the Diocese of Motherwell as we are on the outskirts of the City. I turned up at Mass today to be handed a copy of this letter from one of the Passkeepers. No consultation, no fundraising to try to raise the money needed. One man decides to shut our Church for good and that is the end of it. Our families built this Church. No compassion, shut immediately. This is the same man who treated Fr Despard so badly. Unbelievable.
Letter from Bishop Toal on the Closure of St Clare’s Church, Easterhouse.
Dear Parishioners of St John Boscoā€™s Parish,
I write to explain the difficult situation we now face in regard to your parish.
When St Benedictā€™s and St Clareā€™s formed the one parish of St John Boscoā€™s, we kept both churches open, providing the celebration of the Sacred Liturgy and other services and social events in both locations. This has become increasingly difficult, particularly in regard to St Clareā€™s, where a number of significant repairs are necessary, most notably the replacement of the heating system in the church as it has been condemned as unsafe for further use. The parish does not have the financial resources to carry out these repairs and I have reached the conclusion that the decision be made to close St Clareā€™s
and concentrate on maintaining St Benedictā€™s, which benefitted from a full and costly renovation in more recent times. Since the colder weather is approaching and St Clareā€™s will not be heated through the winter, the closure will take effect from this weekend. I cannot see a benefit in delaying the closure, so from next Sunday October 5th the 10am Mass will be celebrated in St Benedictā€™s.
I realise this is sad news for many people and I have been reluctant to take this step, but it has to be faced and our present difficulties with fewer people attending Mass and the subsequent loss of income made any possibility of carrying out the necessary repairs in St Clareā€™s untenable. I seek your understanding over this and I encourage those who have faithfully attended Mass in St Clareā€™s to continue to do so in St Benedictā€™s and to be given every opportunity to continue to offer their services there as in St Clareā€™s. It has been the intention to foster a spirit of unity and friendship among all the parishioners and the new circumstance of worshipping in the one church will offer further opportunity
for this to be realised.
I thank all who have been part of St Clareā€™s community over the years for the outstanding service offered in the parish and into the wider community. An opportunity will be offered to gather in
thanksgiving once we recover from the pandemic and are free and safe to gather again in greater number. In the meantime I offer my gratitude as Bishop of the Diocese for your faith and commitment to Our Lord and his Church. I ask the Lordā€™s blessing upon you all and all your loved ones in these difficult times. I remember also those who have gone before us, whose faith and good works built up and sustained St Clareā€™s ā€“ may they rest in peace.
With my prayers and best wishes,
Yours in Christ,
+ Joseph Toal

Iā€™m sure +Pat would be happy to advise.

Did the incident in Roscrea occur before or after Fr. Richards appointment as Abbot of Rosrea? When did the alleged incident in the Boiler House supposedly occur? Might this issue impact negatively financially on the monastery in terms of donations, contributions, etc. Many of the lay faithful will be shocked.
Is he fit to be in the position of Abbot to a monastic community?

How will donors know? The Irish Catholic and the secular media haven’t reported it and the OCSOs are hardly going to put it on their websites.

Bishop Pat, have you listened to the Abbotā€™s sermon from this morning itā€™s on Mount Mellaryā€™s Facebook page. Is it directed at you or his community or the Abbot General or does it just happen to be his sermon for today? Itā€™s all about judging others and showing mercy. Of course it is. Thatā€™s what Christianity is about, but where was such mercy and Christianity in the church when it came to seminarians in the past who were gay or acted out on occasion and were dispensed with? Where was the pardon and mercy in Orders when younger entrants fell at a hurdle? Does this pardon and mercy only apply to Abbots? Does this pardon and mercy only apply when someone high up the ladder of the church is caught with their cock in one hand and lube in the other? Does this pardon and mercy not apply to gays who want to get married in their local Roman Catholic Church? Or does it only apply to Abbots who frequent bath houses? Does this pardon and mercy apply to seminarians who were dumped by Maynooth because they succumbed to human urges? Does this pardon and mercy get to be broadcast from a pulpit in Mount Mellary or Roscrea just because the head honcho was caught? The clerical Church forgives itā€™s own when they get caught but woe betide you if youā€™re caught with your cock out and youā€™re not a bishop or an Abbot.

6.58: The gospel imperative of love, mercy and compassion is given to and expected of all who claim to follow Christ. These qualities are the hallmark of all who supposedly follow Christ. Of course higher standards are expected of priests and religious. When any 8ne of us fails, surely we admonish and counsel that person wisely, carefully and in a way that effects necessary change. I accept that when priests fail in moral matters, it is very difficult to listen to them preach the gospel. Yet, I hope and pray that those of us who are abhorred by any abuse or moral failure or scandal will not feel superior or that we are better human beings than those we condemn. The church is being constantly called out in its moral aberrations and I share the same abhorrence as you do. I do not define my role as that of judge, juror and executioner but am always looking to my own behaviour first and foremost. And lastly, your vulgarity is unnecessary. It diminishes your argument.

8:10 what you say is true but so is 6:58. Yes of course forgiveness etc but it does appear that true Christianity is used by the Church when it suits and not used when the Church punishes lessor mortals such as more junior priests and many members of the laity. Whither the pardon and forgiveness for the litany of sinners we read about here who after appearing on this blog for a few days or even a couple of weeks then quietly departed into the civilian world or for ā€œfurther studyā€ or ā€œin care of Bishopā€™s Houseā€. They did not go on webcam to preach about forgiveness. There wasnā€™t too many sermons from Mellary when various other priests human failings were discussed here. No. Instead many ā€˜ordered priestsā€™ had a good ole gossip about them. Whatā€™s good for the goose is good for the gander.

+Pat I saw Fr Littlepimple Lace in Balham today with his clerical garb including a black zucchetto – he looked like he was heading for the synagogue only his Roman collar and black cossock differentiated. He celebrated mass yesterday morning I dont know why but he said the gloria even though it isnt usually said for weekday mass. This was not the evening vigil that was said by another priest

Alan Burke became very attractive in recent years. I think a load has been lifted off his shoulders. He now works with the Bon Secours.

The Bons are a sort of refugee camp for ex-priests. It would be more their line to divest the private hospitals (how does that fit with the Gospels) and pay reparations for their wrongdoings in Tuam.
And of course they have no vocations.

9.01: The full truth of Tuam is not yet told. There are lots of groups other than the Bon Secour Sisters who ought to hang their heads in shame. The Sisters provide excellent health care and give employment to thousands. Sour grapes on your part….
