SILVERSTREAM MONASTERY – NEW LEAKED INFORMATION.

Over the weekend I received leaked information from a senior Meath priest who is very concerned, with other Meath priests, about the handling of the Silverstream issue.

I thought I should give the monk who suffered at Kurby’s hands the right to comment.

I tried to contact the monk. He was completely unwilling to communicate with me. He refused all communication with me, told me had nothing to say to me and not to contact him ever again? Wow!

Fortunately, my Meath contact is both knowledgeable and on the ball.

Mark Kirby

My Meath source provided me with a summary of the complaints:

After years of enduring the Prior’s sexual harassment (physical and verbal), emotional abuse, and spiritual quackery (he claims direct revelations from Christ, which he has put in a wildly popular anonymous book called In Sinu Jesu), I finally wrote a letter of concern to the Bishop of Meath.

I have also witnessed countless acts of tax fraud, in the form of paying workers “under the table” (much of our monastery was renovated this way), the maintenance of a “slush fund” by the Prior (a special drawer in his desk full of thousands of euros taken directly from cash donations of the faithful, candle money, Mass stipends, etc.).

I have also witnessed one incident of the Prior paying of an extortioner who threatened to tell the Bishop (this would have been Smith at the time) that the Prior and I were romantically involved. The extortioner was a volunteer worker who, I can only imagine, must have seen one of the Prior’s romantic moves towards me.

To clarify about the sexual harassment, this mostly took the form of the Prior wanting to take my arm and sometimes hold my hand to stroll about the more secluded areas of the property; the embraces that were so tight and uncomfortable that I often felt as if he might break bones; the constant (and I mean multiple times a day) unannounced visitations to my cell (where he caught me more than once in a state of undress); wanting on occasion to help me get undressed and ready for bed; and the repetition of phrases like “My Benedict”, “my monk”, “my priest”.

Only a few times did the harassment take the form of something genital, namely, the Prior showing me his genitals “accidentally” when, for instance, I visited him when he was sick (opening up the covers, and “whoops!”) or one occasion on which he wanted to show me an insect bite on his thigh; he raised up his underwear way too high, thus revealing his genitals.

He would also sometimes tell me stories about sexual things that happened to him in the past, e.g. times when as a monk he was sexually promiscuous (he was not proud of it), and even one occasion in which he had an affair with a woman who later hinted to him that she may have become pregnant (this affair, he told me, was to affirm to himself that he is not gay).

On one particularly egregious occasion (I was an aspirant at the time), fearful that I had decided not to join (there were no other prospects), he sat me down for about an hour to recount to me in very specific, vivid, graphic detail his own violent sexual past, that is, his serial rape by his uncle and his friends from a very early age (5 I think) until adolescence. When I say graphic and vivid he was describing almost mechanically horrendous sexual acts performed upon a young boy’s body. These were not all normal male-to-male acts; he described things that were incredibly perverse and degrading.

This was a watershed event in my life. Why I returned after this event, I will not fully understand, except that Kirby exploited some serious emotional weaknesses in me. What it produced in me was a kind of misguided compassion (a feeling that I had to help this broken man fulfill his God-given mission to begin a new family of “Eucharistic Benedictines”) combined with an extreme shock and disgust and aversion which I could only keep bottled up for so long. This was 10 years ago.

Why I endured the constant harassment and emotional manipulation is, again, a mystery, except that I genuinely believed in his vision, and the idea of being on the “ground floor” of it was too good to pass up. I knew all of this was wrong, but mostly I submitted to it out of fear of an overly emotional reaction, and because of his excuse that these things were very “Mediterranean” and only rigid “Anglo-Saxon types” are bothered by them (Kirby is half Italian and plays up that side very much).

I have never believed in his private revelations, and have told him from the beginning that I am “agnostic” on that particular topic (something that always “hurt [him] deeply”). You can imagine, though, the extremely abusive potential of a man like this, claiming the aura of a mystical soul chosen by Jesus, having pervasive spiritual authority over young, impressionable men.

The particular event which caused me to write my 30 April letter to Bishop Deenihan happened on the night between 25-26 April. The Prior and I were talking fairly late in his cell (totally unacceptable but this was often our practice). I told him I had to leave, I could not take it anymore, etc. I said unless he renounced, personally and also spiritually as the head the community, his way of relating toward me, I could not possibly continue there another day. The reaction was explosive. He began to pursue me physically all over the monastery, all the while madly texting me over and over things like “Where are you? Where are you? Where are you?” I was able to hide myself in the graveyard of the Visitation sisters, where I began to text my father in America to ask what to do. I was in genuine fear for my physical safety.

PAT SAYS

I think that Bishop Dennihan and the visitation team that includes two abbots – Coffey of Glenstall and our “friend” Purcell of Mellary, need to make an URGENT public statement on all these matters.

Kirby should not return under any circumstances.

And the closure of Silverstream and the despatch of the monks to other monasteries, should be top of the agenda

The Garda and the Charity Commissioners need to continue their investigation.

If some of those impressionable monks go to Mellary there might be a need for someone else to step aside. Some of them are quite goodlooking.

How on earth did this monk as he says put up with years of abuse sexual and emotional, also this idiot Kirby claiming to have revelations from Our Lord. I cannot understand how at the very first act of abuse he didn’t do something about it then instead of waiting years. As regards the money is there no audit done on a yearly basis, the Guards should have been called in immediately. This criminal Kirby sounds an absolute charlatan and evil degenerate, why is he being allowed to be in hiding, he should be flushed out from where he is and brought to justice.

There are similarites between his case and that of spouses in abusive marriages.

Hi Bishop pat,
I just want to weigh in on this… I was there for a couple of months discerning a vocation in the early days when they first arrived, and if its the person (the whistle-blower) I’m thinking of, Dom Mark treated him with great leniency and respect and leeway, while on the other hand the whistle-blower was cantankerous and I was always weary of what kind of mood he was in… Dom Mark treated him very much like a son… If you want to know more give me your email as I want to remain anon… At least you can hear a side other than the whistle blower and Dom Mark

“Petrus Romanus”, let me get this straight: Your defense of Kirby is that he treated this monk with special treatment, and that said monk was sometimes cantankerous? Stop the presses! The claim of the monk is in fact that Kirby singled him out and treated him in a special way. What you write basically lends credibility to his account! As for moodiness, if what the monk says is true, most people would be rather emotionally on a rollercoaster most, if not all, of the time.

Well Polly nobody gets around as much as you, but the first time Kirby tried to abuse him he should have punched him hard and left. That’s what I would have done and anyone else with any self respect would have done. I don’t see any similarites to spouses in abusive marriages at all. He says it’s a mystery how he endured the abuse for so long and I agree its definitely a mystery. I can only surmise that he is a very weak character like you anyone, else would have belted him

I am shocked at these revelations but not surprised. This man Kirby seems to have been of a cultic type personality where all life and avtivities revolved around him. His past experiences, obviously unresolved, deemed him totally unsuitable as prior. He used his position in an abusive way. His treatment of this monk is disgusting. I hope there is an investigation into his behaviour and activities and that the monks remaining will be supported by the Bishop of Meath. I visited this monastery in a couple of occasions and was impressed initially but I found the writings of Kirby very strange and off putting which made me ask some questions about his mental, emotional and spiritual stability. I will pray for these men now very upset and uncertain of their future.

More shake up in Westminster!
I have just received word that the Neocatechumenal community based at St Charles Borromeo, Ogle Street is to relocate to Westminster Cathedral effective from the first Sunday of Advent. They will initially meet for Mass on Saturday Evenings in the crypt chapel.
The priest with responsibility for Neocatechumenal way at Westminster Cathedral will be Fr Paulo Bagini.
Ogle Street has been home to the Neocats for a very long time and they have made considerable alterations to the interior of the Church. This will have major effects on the whole of the diocese!

It is only reasonable to expect to go through monastic formation without hearing about unresolved trauma in the prior’s childhood.
Kirby would have been better off undergoing lengthy therapy with a psychologist to help regulate his emotions and relationships so that he is not driven by his experiences to such emotional extremes. It is for people in his situation that psychological assessment should be useful.
I am not surprised by the guy going back to more of the same. I know of another monastery where the superior has unresolved trauma and actually behaves very similarly. The community recognised he had problems as a novice but let him stay, with his behaviour and mental state unchanged, to the detriment of many young men who have encountered him since.

+Pat,

Is it punishment or coincidence that the parish priest at the centre of a storm in a tea cup (the dublin panto) regarding unofficial opening of churches is no longer a trustee of the diocesan homeless charity?

RTE May 2020:

“I have reminded all parishes this week that disregard for the norms of public health is something that is unacceptable.”

According to the news report, the church’s parish priest said that members of the public had been allowed to enter for Mass, as long as they adhered to social distancing guidelines.

The PP said that the doors of the church would now remain closed during daily mass services at 10:00 local time until he was “given the all clear” to allow members of the public to attend again.

I hope this is a coincidence, that at the end of May 2020 these two things happen AND not a sign of what happens when you cross the big boss in Drumcondra.

COMMUNICANTS BREACH THE RULES
The Roman Catholic bishops have instructed that Communion should only be received in the hand during the Covid-19 emergency. Surprising then to see in St Mary’s in Pope’s Quay, Cork, at 11am Mass recently, a significant number of communicants being facilitated to ignore the bishops’ instructions and receive Communion in the mouth.
New version of “a la carte catholicism”?

On the subject of misuse Canon Law, this is part of a response received from a Vicar General explaining why Communion on the tongue can and has been forbidden in the English diocese in question:

“…. The existence of the right to receive Holy Communion on the tongue (Instruction Redemptionis Sacramentum §92) is affirmed by the Roman Missal §161. However, the right cannot be considered absolute or unqualified. In the Code of Canon Law (1983), Canon 223 states the following:

§1. In exercising their rights, the Christian faithful, both as individuals and gathered together in associations, must take into account the common good of the Church, the rights of others, and their own duties toward others.

§2. In view of the common good, ecclesiastical authority can direct the exercise of rights which are proper to the Christian faithful.

So enshrined in this Canon 223§1 is the requirement (must) of the faithful to take into account

1. The common good of the Church
2. The rights of others
3. Their duties towards others.

To protect the common good of the Church and society, temporarily, the guidelines are to be followed bearing in mind the civil responsibility to comply with Government Regulations and Guidance…..”

If only the bishops were as diligent and concerned about the common good when it came to moving abuser priests around, giving abuser priests glowing references to get jobs in State schools (bishop Joe Duffy) and making 7-year-olds sign a promise to keep abuse secret (as Sean Brady did as a young canon lawyer).

This entire, and utterly surreal, situation at Silverstream is a microcisom of the psychological dysfunctionality of historical Romanism: the overriding passion to control others through emotional manipulation and exploitation.
There are shades of this in the writings of St Paul, where he exhorts members of the christian communities he founded to behave only according to his exacting standards. And he does this by pouring out his heart to them, letting them know the suffering their misbehaviour is inflicting on poor Paul. It is an early example of guilt-tripping people: of bending them to another’s will through emotional blackmail.
The Romanists have perfected this dark practice, and its creepy rationale, over 2000 years; and they have become highly proficient at it, even to the point of having ordinands to the priesthood (and Cathbots who post on this blog) believe that promising or vowing obedience to a bishop is no different from giving obedience to Christ himself.
It’s all bollocks, of course, and most outsiders are aware of it. But the Romanists go on believing the lie that there is no difference ontologically between, usually, a physically bloated man in a mitre and the God-man, Jesus; some of these Romanists even peddle that lie on this very blog.
Give obedience to no man, not to the grinning greasy Latino in Rome, His Oiliness Pope Francis, nor to abbots in religious orders, under such pretentious titles as ‘Father in Christ’.
And call no priest ‘Father’, because Romanists invariably attempt to pull rank, as it were, on lay Catholics with that silly title to dominate and exploit them. Principally, though, because Jesus himself, in the Gospel, commands that no one, not even he, should be addressed in this way; no one except the heavenly Father.
But since when did Romanists take heed of anything Jesus had to say?😕

Like

A wonderful piece of self-promotion, that video. Alas, not in a good way, since these men, only too clearly now, are part of the massive problem that is Romanist priesthood, a priesthood that the historical Christ did not intend.

Like

So obviously the troll formerly known as “Magna Carta” at 3:11pm, with its calling the Pope “His Oiliness”, its hatred of St Paul and its being greater then the Holy Spirit who inspired him.

Like

Why didn’t you address the points made by that poster, whoever he or she was?

What he or she said of Paul is absolutely true: the evidence for this is in one or more of his letters. It is attempted emotional manipulation, not an appeal for genuine conversion (which is more an act of will than reactionary feeling).

And how do you know that everything, or anything, Paul wrote was inspired by the Holy Spirit?

I love it when people take that tack: Oh! The Holy Spirit inspired this or that. It’s along the lines of ‘Roma locuta; causa finita est.’ It’s meant as a trump card in any theological controversy, but it won’t wash anymore: the only thing than can honestly halt such debate is quality of argument, not appeal to personaltity, office, or tradition.

Read Paul’s letters with a less jaundiced eye and then tell me, honestly, whether the Holy Spirit could have inspired everything he wrote. The Holy Spirit does not inspire untuth, and there is clearly untruth in some of Paul’s words. For example, his clear approval of human slavery in the Letter to Philemon. And his listing alcoholics among those who would not be with Jesus at the Parousia.

Don’t be so liberal in attributing to God everything in Scripture; that’s the reaction I’d expect from someone in Year Five. 😕

They don’t want reform, but continuity of the status quo. Some of them even want the clock turned back in terms of priestly status in the Church, in terms of litugy, language, and vestments. They have learned nothing because they believe that they have nothing to learn, such is their arrogance.
Romanist priesthood is an almighty sham, unintended by Christ. This is why its fruit is a rolling harvest of evil.

Kiko Arguello isn’t the main villain in the NCW (if he is one at all). Albeit his teachings are just Jansenism. Liturgical mess (where it occurs) is only of tertiary importance. Kiko has brought out a book of photographs he took of the oppressed residents of Palomeras Altas. After only one year there (I think) Archbishop Morcillo arranged for fixer types in Rome to talk him into relocating there.

Nowadays the “way” hangs onto members about ten times too long, and operatives have a dubious habit of running items of non-core business by the membership to make them feel implicated. Unfortunately, it only pretends to teach prayer. The main note (perhaps not originally intended) has become passivity, which is “standard” RCC anyway, this is why it blends in so well.

There is variation between one neighbourhood and the next, aiding the newcomers employed as spokespersons, whom we shall see next, claiming to omnisciently disprove what does happen in some places on a bad day (and every movement has bad days). For example in one place members are easy going about someone missing huge chunks of “way” and nearby they are uptight and ballistic.

One begins to infer that operatives at national level are inconsistent among themselves also. If they would release members after three years (after all one will be “initiated” by then, even if not actually “inserted”) there will be scarcely any need for inferring and most of their problems will be resolved overnight.

Bible studying is the main gift, though only when operatives aren’t breathing down one’s neck. A neat style of brasswork, and songs (if only they would be sung well enough) are among things remembered with consolation. If the NCW is near you, it is heartily recommended you do join it (it is always needing an influx), and assert your own gift, that will restore the early radical spirit.

Further to 7.57, in fact I agree thoroughly with Chuck in all matters.

Rome is solid Jansen and Teilhard combined, that is why it has become miserable altogether, whether NCW or non-NCW.

In the first two years of the relaunched NCW they should teach Shema and Initiation to Prayer only, and after that, Sermon on the Mount and then throw you all out and stop being possessive.
