MOUNT MELLERARY AND SILVERSTREAM -STILL IN FULL COVER UP MODE.

Abbot General

It is over a month since I communications with the Cistercian Abbot General about the sexual activities of Abbot Richard Purcell.

Purcell

The fall back approach in the Church with regard sexual complaints is that the accused step aside while the investigation is ongoing.

In the case Abbot Purcell,he is still fully in office and behaving as if nothing had happened!

If Richard Purcell was the manager of a business and it emerged that he used the premises to have sex with a fellow worker – as happened in Roscrea Abbey he would have immediately dismissed for “gross misconduct”.

But in the RCC, which PREACHES from the rooftop about justice, such behaviour is still BRUSHED UNDER THE CARPET!

And the highed your rank the more dust is brushed under an even bigger carpet.

See the Cardinal McCarrick case.

McCarrick and victim

We have been sold the story that monasteries are the epitome of love, truth justice right behaviour, respect etc.

But that was a GREAT BIG LIE!

We are once again seeing that the RCC monasteries are as corrupt as they were in the middle ages – places of money grabbibg, debauchery and materialism.

Mount Mellary is in the diocese of Waterford where Phonsie Cullinan is bishop.

Phonsie

I wrote to him about Purcell – who seems to be his best made.

Not even an acknowledgement.

But Phonsie hypocritically lectures the Irish people about vacine cancers for young girls, the evils of same sex and marriage etc.

But he tplerates and protects a monastic debaucherer in his own diocese. He even uses the monastery for his Waterford Catholic Family Days.

Bareback Purcell and Phonsie

Phonsie we always knew you were a Opus Dei hypocrite.

And now you are proving us right.

Hang your head in shame Phonsie Cullinan!

Your patron saint Alphonsus Lugori must be turning in his grave.

SILVERSTREAM

Deenihan

Meanwhile in Meath Deenihan & Co are trying to pull off their own cover up.

I’m told that Tabernacle Kirby has been secretly brought back to the monastery during the night and is to serve, temporarily an an ordinary monk!

What about the sexual complaints?

What about the missing millions?

Meanwhile they whistle blowing monk is sent into exile and they are trying to blacken his reputation with false allegations of mental health issues and financial impropriety.

The RCC acts under pressure, when it comes to safeguarding issues.

But on everything else it is 1700 years of business as usual.

And because the RCC is part of this world’s establishment the other parts of the establishment leaves them alone.

Jesus did tell us who was the Prince of this world was and always would be.

I wrote this blog early yesterday afternoon. I then celebrated Mass at 5.30 pm and was struck by the relevance of the readings to today’s topic.

First reading
Galatians 5:18-25
To belong to Christ, crucify all self-indulgence

If you are led by the Spirit, no law can touch you. When self-indulgence is at work the results are obvious: fornication, gross indecency and sexual irresponsibility; idolatry and sorcery; feuds and wrangling, jealousy, bad temper and quarrels; disagreements, factions, envy; drunkenness, orgies and similar things. I warn you now, as I warned you before: those who behave like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. What the Spirit brings is very different: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, trustfulness, gentleness and self-control. There can be no law against things like that, of course. You cannot belong to Christ Jesus unless you crucify all self-indulgent passions and desires.
Since the Spirit is our life, let us be directed by the Spirit.

Gospel
Luke 11:42-46
You overlook justice and the love of God

The Lord said to the Pharisees: ‘Alas for you Pharisees! You who pay your tithe of mint and rue and all sorts of garden herbs and overlook justice and the love of God! These you should have practised, without leaving the others undone. Alas for you Pharisees who like taking the seats of honour in the synagogues and being greeted obsequiously in the market squares! Alas for you, because you are like the unmarked tombs that men walk on without knowing it!
A lawyer then spoke up. ‘Master,’ he said ‘when you speak like this you insult us too.’
‘Alas for you lawyers also,’ he replied ‘because you load on men burdens that are unendurable, burdens that you yourselves do not move a finger to lift.’

Did Abbot Purcell read those readings at Mass yesterday?

Did he agree with them?

How does he reconcile his lifestyle with them?

Looking on from the sidelines, I have to say that there appears to be a severe mediocrity about Church leaders in Ireland. In any other walk of life, a CEO or COO or Chair of a company or business or secular organisation would be acting with deliberation, decisiveness and the right degree of transparency and communication about the host of problematic matters that we aired and reported on this blog.. Instead, what we see is stasis, a frozenness of inaction. I think that comes from a number of directions. 1. They are so arrogant in their clericalism that they just assume that all this stuff is nobody else’s business, it is priestly stuff, and that has a different order of existence. 2. They think that by sticking their heads in the sand, the matter will eventually go away and the new cycle will move on to something else and somebody else. 3. Or they are just too thick and stupid to realise that there is a problem. I suspect it is a bit of all three. Whatever the reason, I for one, do not like having my concerns about the way the Church is run and how clergy present themselves ignored, diminished, belittled. It is important for us to hold bishops and Church leaders to account and ask them difficult questions, even if they don’t want to answer those questions. This blog is one forum for doing that and facilitates a good service of accountability. The other way – much more crucial for the Church in the pandemic time – is MONEY ! Even if people withheld 50 % of what they usually give, then very quickly the bishops and clergy would begin to feel the pinch and would look at all these things through a new prism. One way or another, they have to be held accountable. At the moment they are treating us like idiots.

I don’t think any “CEO or COO or Chair of a company or business or secular organisation” would be interested in anyone allegedly riding… well, let’s just say, Apache style.

They would if what the guy was doing was in direct contravention of company policy and expected behaviour, and I would suggest bareback shagging in a gay sauna by a Catholic abbot of a monastery probably constitutes that….. Or call me old fashioned. Now, if he was doing that say, working for a secular company that made widgets, then they wouldn’t be interested, I agree. But, if they Catholic Church says and teaches what it says and teaches, then I think they need to take an interest. Otherwise, why should we listen to them when they can’t take these things seriously when it’s one of their own. They surely would have something to say if it was you or me. Double standards. Duplicity. Hypocrisy. Clerical exceptionalism. And so on……

No one cares, it’s not mainstream news so they will do nothing and hope it will all blow over Its dying in Ireland 9.33 excellent post sums up church leadership in Ireland.

Tabernacle (oh sorry my dick slipped out) Kirby would not ever be serving as an ordinary monk on account of Jesus talking to him. If he was an ordinary monk we wouldn’t be hearing of this.
Is there news of who is supposedly prior of Silverstream while this ridiculous business is going on?
I suppose in theory Glenstal could appoint a monk prior, if they have one to spare who would be willing to learn the old rite, but no monk in his right mind would willingly take the role in these circumstances!

Oh Pat if that is correct that means that something definitely happened. The question is did it happen to help the Abbot of Mount Mellary?

Travis and the two Bridies are dominating the international headlines along with the two Italian priests being prosecuted, one for rogering the altarboy and the other for covering it up. With juicy stories like that, don’t forget the film footage, no one in interested in Rawhide or Kirby. Nothing to see here as Fr Ted would say. Heads down lads, say nothing and it will all blow over Seamus Woulfe style.

I wonder does the fact that the mainstream media doesn’t show any interest in this stuff indicates how irrelevant the Church and its clergy have become in society these days ? I think most people just hear this stuff, see it and say…’And?’ It doesn’t impact any more. The Church should be concerned about that. There is nothing worse than people gossiping about you than people not gossiping about you. And, for most people, gossiping about the Church and clergy is now way down the list. Irrelevant.

Pat, should you contact Bolton Abbey and ask if it has any comment to make? There’s something weird about the timing of the change over. An Irish Cistercian would hardly fire one of its neighboring Abbots? It would have been easier for the Canadian to do a hatchet job. Do they think they have outfoxed you? Funny that they quote a recommendation from a few years ago and only enforce it when the shit hit the fan.

So Mellary changed its reporting structure. Who changed it? Who would make such a decision or sign off on it? That’s a bit like people brought before the court being able to choose their own judge and re-write the constitution.

I think it is progress, Pat.

The current Superior of Mount St. Josephs Abbey, Roscrea, is Malachy Thompson.
If a decision has been made to give Fr. Purcell the heave-ho, I think the
new Father Immediate will likely appoint a new Superior temporarily to
Mt. Melleray Abbey. I do not think it will be up to the new Father Immediate to
investigate anything considering the Abbot General of the Order is directly involved
in the matter.

Like

The superior is not the Abbot. The Abbot is a different kettle of fish. The Abbot of Roscrea is the Abbot of Mount Mellary until the community in Roscrea elects an Abbot. What qualifications has the ‘superior who is not the Abbot’ – Br or Fr Malachy?

Like

Bolton Abbey in Kildare was founded in the 60s by monks from Roscrea. The Abbot of Roscrea is still Abbot Richard? The Abbot of the monastery of Bolton has been charged with looking into all this. It concerns the Abbot of Mount Mellary who is also still Abbot of Roscrea? Roscrea was founded by Mellary. It’s a bit like a curate Being asked to investigate an archbishop. Don’t take your foot off the pedal Pat. Your next move should involve the archbishop of Dublin. Bolton is in his diocese. Isn’t Mr Merrick a friend of Abbot Richard’s. He organized the Archbishop to preach in Roscrea there’s a photo of The Archbishop and Joe down in Roscrea online. The Archbishop’s Secretary would know Roscrea well as he worked there.

I am sure he has learnt his lesson, Bp Pat, and promised the Abbot General he has curbed his sometimes uncontrollable cravings and lust for the male form.

On the question of transparency and clergy ‘missing in action’. A few years back there was a new ordained curate in Dominic’in tallaght, a Dominican. He was there for less a year, moved then disappeared. The parish pastoral worker sid he didn’t get on with the pp, she seen him go to gay clubs and he married a man, is now a protestant.

Like

Mixture of reasons. Some journalists have been threatened by bishops and their bosses.
Others will not publish gay stories as its not PC.

OK. Prior.
Where’s the money gone? Are the cops still involved?
What happened to the monk who made the allegation?
The lack of openness, transparency and accountability is staggering.
No wonder these people are becoming a total irrelevancy.
They seem to be a law onto themselves, minding each other!

Pay the superior of Roscrea is neither Abbot nor prior as far as I know. It would rock the order of Abbot of Mellary had to go

Like

@7:00pm There is nothing ridiculous about it. The current superior of Roscrea is NOT an Abbot. The last Abbot of Roscrea was installed as Abbot of Mount Mellary. There is no Abbot in Roscrea. There might be a superior but there’s no Abbot. Have a look at their website (Mount St Joseph’s, Roscrea). Abbot Purcell features prominently on the main page as the Abbot. Why? Because they don’t have one and he is still titular Abbot. It is not just about asking the Abbot of Mount Mellary to step aside due to alleged misdemeanors. It is asking the Abbot of Mount Mellary who is also the Abbot of Mount St Joseph’s, Roscrea to stand aside and remember there is a school attached to the Abbey in Roscrea and a lot of parents of students and the school can’t afford bad publicity as it almost shut down. The Cistercians can’t afford to let this particular shit hit the fan.

Do tell me where you find quality clergy in the Church these days ? My experience is that clergy these days are pretty mediocre. Mind you, no surprise. Many years ago when I went through seminary training – eventually to see the light and leave in my final year, the best thing I ever did – I was aware how lacking it was. It wasn’t just the times, it was the complete lack of property qualified staff and curriculum. Suitability for priesthood was predicated on turning up for morning prayers and compline. That was it. There was little or no human / emotional development input, celibacy was by and large just assumed in a muscular christianity sort of way, and that was it. Oh, and dogmatic theology and church history thrown in. It was lamentable. I doubt very much, from what I read in various blogs, that much has changed. Oh, they may have tinkered with the edges, but essentially they don’t really know what they are doing or what they want. I have many years of lived experience in various parishes with various priests, and almost without exception they have been limited and underwhelming. The sorts of chaps who were picked out by the PP as moderately clever and pushed forward to minor and then major seminary. And five years later, hey presto, he’s a priest. But, in real life the most of them would only have made it to the dizzy heights of a primary school deputy headteacher, I think. In so many areas they are dismally lacking, relying on deference and instant wisdom to get by. it’s embarrassing. And then we have to put up with their odd behaviours, particularly as we have been reading their sexual antics. I despair. We used to pray. ” Lord, give us good and holy priests.” I don’t think God has been listening with the crop we have now or in the pipeline. Ordinations in my diocese have seen a bit of surge these last few years. But, already I note that they are beginning to go AWOL or MIA. Somebody needs to have a serious think about what we want of our priests, and who they should be. At present it isn’t working. If it was a business it would have been bust years ago with the kind of leadership and manpower we are being given.

5.41: I agree with most of your analysis. I believe I received a good, academic education in the 7 year seminary programme. I also got some wonderful pastoral opportunities. Prayer and spirituality were certainly stressed but you had to decide the depth, relevance and importance of this yourself. The one most important thing lacking was the time given to emotional, human development at all stages of life. We got her little by way of learning how to integrate spirituality, your humanity and sexuality alongside the reality of celibacy. Little was given by way of psychological truths, learning and insights about human/sexual relationships in their myriad of expressions and how we might be tempted!! And how to cope!! No one spoke to us about paedophilia: we knew from Canon Law that it is an egregious crime and deserving of immediate response and thorough investigation. That was the extent of it. About 6/7 years after ordination in late 70’s I struggled to make sense of the machinations of Parish and Diocesan politics: I realised that the deepening of faith and prayer could not be done alone, so I sought out retreats: I became aware of the dysfunctionality of much of what I saw in priesthood and that expectations I was called to live by were almost impossible. With this came much shame, guilt and depression. While I am a strong, resilient person within and try to do my utmost, the human challenges which life threw at me were often ignored because we were told that you had to be always “pure” and “perfect” and to never “give up” in the face of trials. Thankfully years later I had the good fortune (yes!) of having a breakdown which required therapy. This was a blessing because it brought me to an awareness of my own failings and sinfulness, my own humanity which is broken most of the time but also that it contains great beauty and possibility. I learned to place aside all unnecessary “clerical” nonsense and expectations and pretence. I discovered a true freedom within and an insight into knowing and accepting myself as I am and to work with both my strength and my imperfections. Now I can navigate my way in ministry focusing on what I discern as relevant and important in ministering to people in the 21st century. I must stress that I was also very inspired by many priests I worked with, men who were true to the “calling” and who inspired me. I was blessed too with religious women both in schools and in parishes and mostly today I am blessed by the friendships formed with married couples. There is undoubtedly a culture that pertains to priesthood which, if not acknowledged, breaks you apart as a human being, a culture which is dysfunctional precisely because it is dominated by a macho style male leadership with power, secrecy and abuse at its core. I try to stay away from all of this and concentrate on the essence of the gospel of Christ. Being a priest (in its present form) is very challenging, almost irrelevant in the ireland of today. There is an urgency for a new vision, a new waý.
