IRISH PRESIDENT SIGNS MOTHER AND CHILD BILL INTO LAW.

President Michael D Higgins in Ireland has signed the Mother and Baby Bill into law.

The government won a Dáil (Irish Parliament) vote on the controversial bill by 78 votes to 67 last week.

A presidential statement said concerns raised in the discussion of the bill were “serious and must be considered”.

The legislation relates to records gathered by the Mother and Baby Homes Commission.

Much of the evidence it heard was given in private and legally protected.

A database of 60,000 records is to be transferred to the child and family agency Tusla, while the remaining records will be sealed for 30 years.

But campaigners on behalf of the mothers and their children have expressed fears they will not be able to access their records if they are sealed.

PAT SAYS

This report and bill is very important for many, many thousands of people.

It is the telling of the tragic story of what happened them as children.

And their childhood experiences affected their whole lives.

And it was all shrouded in secrecy- Irish, Catholic secrecy.

It involved nuns, brothers, priests and bishops.

And it involved brainwashed Catholic politicians, judges, lawyers, Garda, medics etc.

The Dark Secrets of Catholic Ireland 1922 to 1970.

That all needs to be brought out into the light.

TODAYS CATHOLIC SECRETS

We still have secret Catholic Ireland.

The current cases of the gay Catholic, seminarians, priests, monks etc is the modern expression of this secret darkness.

Let the light shine into it all!!!!

Why is the Irish Government so slow in doing the exhumation? The archdiocese of Tuam wants it and conservative Catholics such as David Quinn have urged it to proceed.

The Tuam babies lie, together with the Savita lie, served their purpose of legalising the killing of the unborn.

So what is a satisfactory number for you? 600 babies? 300? 2?

Let’s hope that you, Pat and Hourigan don’t play games with this story. Remember your parents and your family, like many in our country, walked by the gates of these institutions in the knowledge of what was going on. Even you would have been aware as you grew into your 20’s and 30’s…None of us did anything. None of us. We passed by: we ignored. We are all involved, shamefully.

Like

At 8.22, we may (MAY) all be involved shamefully, but we are not all involved equally.

The RCC, and its priests, had more power and influence than anyone else in Ireland, and they abused this to ensure compliance with its less-than–Christian, institutional will.

10.47: It is not my desire to exculpate any particular group re: mother and baby homes. The Church which was given the responsibility of looking after the “outcasts” of a miserably, harsh, judgmental, merciless society, underpinned by colonial Victorian values. Society as a whole approved of these institutions. Public moral failure was frowned upon and punishments were cruel, with civil, medical, legal and ecclesiastical powers conspiring together to consign our “problem women and children” to stay locked behind walls. Systems of care, accountability and surveillance were not standards of management. Who really cared about the level of professional training given to religious in psychology, child psychology particularly, trauma stresses, cognitive dissonance, the effect of child separation. No one from the various Departments sought to critically analyse the reality of these institutions. Whatever combination of factors which contributed to the deep pain, hurt and trauma, the Church should have had the highest standards of caring. Sadly, that wasn’t the reality. As a society we struggle with owning our collective responsibility for our past cruelty inflicted on our very vulnerable, especially mothees and children. The Church, yes, shamefully broke the spirit of many, many people. So, the political decision of recent times reveals that we don’t truly listen to those who matter most. In this instance, parents and children…

I am shocked that the Predident signed this Bill. There was plenty of concern expressed about the consequences of signing it into law. The Green Party TD got this so wrong by not listening to the relevant voices who are hurt, pained and trampled on once again. This government is out of touch with the mood and feeling of its citizens. This is a dark chapter of our history, institutionally, politically and collectively. We must raise our voices higher and ensure no further pain is endured by survivors.

Did Higgins have a choice? He’s a figurehead, not a party politician; he cannot override a parliamentary and democratic vote.

Like

At 11.19, might it be that Higgins and others were restricted by the Commission’s terms of reference, especially the legalese surrounding it?

My understanding is that the Commission had to give certain legal gurantees to those who wished to communicate their information privately, otherwise its report would not have been as comprehensive and as informed as it is.

I am not defending the sealing of records; just attempting to contextualise it legally.

He can send to the supreme court after which the law can never be challenged again. He did the right thing. It can now be challenged by anyone with locus standi.

Absolutely! How can the two weakest elements of society – mothers and their new born babies – have their stories be hidden away in state and church archives until the history of their abuse can be substantially forgotten or lost? Justice delayed is justice denied. Shame on Irish politicians, shame on Irish clerics and the vast con-trick they have pulled on their believers. God loves you, they claim, but the church doesnt have to love you, and that frees them to be God’s enforcers. They can beat infants, sell them to pharmaceutical companies to test their products on, sell them to infertile couples a continent away, sell their cadavers to medical schools, and relieve their natural urges on them ‘since to them these infants were only ‘the products of sin’. The men with the splendid vestments had made themselves the guardians of God’s love and to these infants and their mothers God’s love and forgiveness is denied. Their mothers can be enslaved in their wretched money making laundries for as long as they thought fit. Everything that the Galilean preached about love and forgiving were inverted into their own institution with its high walled sacred structures and charitable coffers in exchange for what? Pius platitudes from the altars about God’s love. And now the Irish state, which is transforming itself into a secular structure, is enshrining their double-think Into legal lockdown. What are these church created ‘orphans’, and the ‘shamed mothers’ who were often turned out of their father’s houses on to the street, to do? Motherless infants were turned into anonymous institutional products and girls were turned into fatherless street people on the say of men who remained trapped in their own mother love and rejected women in general. Now the irish state is saying with its thirty year rule that these mothers and infants will only be reunited In the graveyard. The irish ‘Free State’ has a long way still to go to become a republic.

9.44: While the church must own it’s responsibility for all abuse in its institutions, the government if tiday – via the Green Party, President and FF/FG – all rushed into passing this legislation. This disreputable bill is open to challenging in the courts and I hope some advocacy groups will pursue this option. The sealing of records is monument to a further hurting of thousands already hurt and fragile. Our government us a moral disgrace for rushing this Bill thriugh without proper and full discussion. How did other Western societies, whether Catholic or not, deal with single mothers and so-called unwanted pregnancies in the first and middle parts of the 20th century? In Britain they were vilified, sent to homes, cast out from families, shunned. Even now the Daily Mail and many Tories deride them as feckless spongers.

More importantly, what septic tanks did the 6,666 babies aborted last year in Ireland end up in, or did they go to hospital incinerators as clinical waste. Perhaps in years to come another amateur historian will expose that grisly truth.

In what way is abortion as a solution to unwanted pregnancies different from the alleged 800 deaths in Tuam? At least in Tuam the alleged 800 deaths were not actively willed.

Ah, bless, another seemingly innocent lamb to the slaughter. When I see these pictures of young, earnest, monks or seminarians, I wonder to myself where they will be in five years. The vast majority will have high tailed it off to another kind of life, either because they see the light or because they get themselves in to trouble. The ones that stay are, well, questionable, limited, compromised, scared of the world, odd, nutty, OCD, prissy, or a.mix of them all. The clerical or monastic life is not a place for a young man to serve God these days. It’s too compromised, as we see day in an day out.

Bishops in Ireland and the UK are making noises about the ban on public worship during the lockdown. I wonder is it because they really care about worship, or whether they are just not used to being told what to do ? I suspect the latter. They have, and have had for a long time, such an elevated view of themselves and their authority, seeing them and their church almost as an alternative nation within the nation which they control and order. They’ve not caught up with the new reality where they and their church doesn’t really figure anymore in the public space and conversation. They have removed themselves from that territory by their behaviour and subsequent loss of trust. Nobody listens to them anymore. Certainly not in Ireland on anything of national importance – including issues such as marriage, divorce, sexuality, abortion, relationships……. Well, like the rest of us, they are going to have to accept that in the interest of the common good (which they bang on about endlessly on other issues) they cannot have their way and will just have to do what the rest of society is doing. Stop moaning. Stop finding fault. Knuckle down and shut up. Oh, I forgot another reason they might well be kicking up a fuss. Money. Of course !

Bishops, as citizens, have the right to express their views as much as you and I do. There are various pulpits in Ireland, whether they be in churches, the ludicrously undemocratic Seanad, the columns of the newspapers, RTE, and Pat’s blog, to take just some examples.

All voices on life matters matter, whether or not people want to hear them.

Also, have a look at the Code of Canon Law, including:
Can. 212 §1. Conscious of their own responsibility, the Christian faithful are bound to follow with Christian obedience those things which the sacred pastors, inasmuch as they represent Christ, declare as teachers of the faith or establish as rulers of the Church.
§2. The Christian faithful are free to make known to the pastors of the Church their needs, especially spiritual ones, and their desires.
§3. According to the knowledge, competence, and prestige which they possess, they have the right and even at times the duty to manifest to the sacred pastors their opinion on matters which pertain to the good of the Church and to make their opinion known to the rest of the Christian faithful, without prejudice to the integrity of faith and morals, with reverence toward their pastors, and attentive to common advantage and the dignity of persons.
Can. 213 The Christian faithful have the right to receive assistance from the sacred pastors out of the spiritual goods of the Church.
