SILVERSTREAM – A SUMMARY.

Kirby

The Charity Regulator in Ireland has received two formal complaints about Silverstream Priory.

The second complaint is from Robert Hourigan and he has received confirmation that they have begun to investigate.

The first investigation has been under way for a longer period.

There have been problems at Silverstream for a very long time.

Silverstream was the dream of Father Mark Kirby.

But Mark Kirby is not a well or stable man.

He is a homosexual man who have never fully accepted his sexual orientation.

Two people exist in Mark Kirby.

  1. The man who wants to be a monk and be holy.
  2. The man who has never resolved his sexuality.

He has been from country to country and from monastery and diocese to monastery and diocese.

He gets emotionally and sexually involved with men and that leads to great conflict in his own life, the life of others and the life of the monastery he is in.

Who is Lennoxtown?

He founded Silverstream with a very small number of younger men.

The current “Whistleblower Monk” became the target of Mark Kirby’s emotional and sexual advances.

No great sexual sin was committed but there were years of “loving” touches, “loving” messages

And on a number of occasions the younger monk claims that Mark Kirby sexually exposed his genitalia to him using excuses like having the monk find an insect bite!

Indecent exposure is a criminal offence.

Many people from Mark Kirby’s past have unpleasant memories of him and recall disturbing stories about him.

It seems that the former Bishop of Meath, Michael Smith, did not do proper checks into Kirby’s past and character.

And for the first ten years of Silverstream Smith conducted no visitations to see everything was alright.

Deenihan inherited the unhappy situation.

Money is another great concern. In the last 6 years Kirby has raised Euros 4,500,000

SCREENSHOTS FROM THE CHARITY REGULATIR WEBSITE.

It is claimed that Kirby kept a big drawer of cash in his office – thousands of euro.

Workers were paid under the counter without records being kept. Tax and VAT rules were flouted.

At least one instance of extortion / blackmail is alleged.

Kirby, a 68byear old guy man only allows under 35s to join

Alert!

So. The Charity Regulator has a great deal to look into.

Oh! By the way – the man in charge of the money during Kirby’s time was Dom Elijah – the new prior – who is not even a priest !!!

Dumb Elijah

Another concern is the ‘Annual Report and Audited Financial Statements’ to the Irish Charities Regulator having been strangely deleted from the Documents tab, so we cannot ascertain where the year-end balances went, e.g., are they carried forward to the next year’s statement or syphoned off somewhere else?

There is also a question mark over the ownership of the priory and any surrounding land, e.g., is it owned outright by Silverstream or is it mortgaged?

+Pat, you wrote in your blog recently this week would be a momentous week for monasteries in Ireland. I thought you were bluffing. You have not let us down. And we should not be surprised as there has been no leadership in the Irish church for decades. Monks, priests, bishops, and dare I say it some nuns have been doing what they like in Ireland for decades. Hourigan says he is in Kerry. +Ray is a disaster. Say no more.I send links to your blog to my brother. He is a solicitor. I wanted to know his views about Hourigan. He was impressed. He said either Hourigan is mad playing a very dangerous game where he could lose evething if +Purcell calls his bluff as the costs involved in court case in Dublin are so big or a cunning enemy that has the best legal advice money can buy. I am not sure. But the fact is has gone to the regulator and they are taking him seriously suggests he means business and has some evidence and I would not want him on my case.

Rawhide Barebacker Purcell would not dare bring a case against anybody. He knows that what is being alleged is true and that there will be a horde of ponies that he has ridden in the past at places like the Boilerhouse that will come forward and say so. He has not a leg to stand on. Very rarely do church people sue because they know they will not be believed and the facts, when out, will condemn them. The only example of kickback that I have seen recently is the stuff in Liverpool where they have gone to court against some deluded, not well, guy. The optics of that are not great for them. Whether they are right or wrong. Purcell, Silverstream, Rory, Gorgeous, Kennedy, Dallat, the whole list, have not got a leg to stand on. If they have, then come forward and challenge what is being alleged. But, they won’t !

More navel gazing. More revelations of the kind that we have become so used to. Surely there are more important things – or even entertaining things – that we could concentrate on than the Barebacking Abbot and the Twink Loving Prior ? I am of the view that these people exist these days in their own little dysfunctional bubble that does not interest the vast majority of people, and that if we just leave them alone they will sink in to ever increasing irrelevance until they are completely ignored as the rest of us get on with our lives. I worry that giving therm all this exposure just gives them a prominence that they no longer deserve and no longer hold in reality. Let them continue to exist in a downward spiral in their own oddness until such time as they die out, or just remain as a little historical footnote. Of course, if there is evidence of criminal activity – as perhaps in the financial shenanigans in Sliverstream – then that should be left to the statutory authorities. I don’t want to waste my time on this lot anymore. Now, any suggestions – serious ones – about what we might discuss ….?

To be honest, I am not surprised you sent the link to your brother. The on-going lack of integrity on the part of Purcell does not come as a surprise. Yes, your brother is correct, I have access to the best legal advice money can buy, partly due to my family connection to Mount Melleray Abbey. The senior counsel that is providing the advice is married to an individual who has a close relative who was a monk and priest of Mount Melleray. As I have written before on this blog; he is scandalised by Purcell and even more scandalised by the on-going inaction of the Abbot General Eamon Fitzgerald. As I write these words, he is reviewing a lengthy letter that I have written to Fr. Fitzgerald. You never know, I might send a copy of it to Pat Buckley.
In the extremely unlikely event that Richard Purcell was stupid enough to bring proceedings against yours truly — yes, your brother is accurate in his description that I would face ruinous and crushing costs if I lost my case at the High Court in Dublin. In fact, I would have to sell a house, and at least 100 acres of land to satisfy Purcell’s legal bill. But, I have more than enough evidence to evidentially satisfy what I have repeatedly asserted.
However, I would wish to dissuade you that I am some moral crusader; I am not. Basically, I am seeking the resignation of Richard Purcell as the abbot of Mount Melleray Abbey; I will continue to make the case for his resignation until that event occurs. The only reason I wrote to the Charity Regulator about Silverstream is because several individuals have brought information to my attention as a result of this blog. They had concerns about Kirby and Purcell, so I was obligated to make the Regulator aware. Last evening, I received further information about the involvement of Abbot Brendan in the visitation, and that will have to be addressed to the Charities Regulator also over the next few days.
I am also waiting for an individual to get back to me about Purcell’s time as the a bit of Mount St. Joseph Abbey, and that, too, will have to be brought to the attention of the Charities Regulator, TULSA, and possibly the Teaching Council of Ireland. Again, this is going to continue getting increasingly ugly until certain people resign and the church follows its own norms and procedures.

Was there a similar fanfare following Dom Augustine’s election as Abbot ?

In brief, they are split into two camps. One group tends to be liberal. The other conservative in public at least. These wear white stockings that are orthodpedic in design. Allegedly, the wearing of these means you sign up to the view that it’s better for members not to admit their homosexual orientation in public, but rather to adopt a publicly anti-gay position and a conservative political and theological stance – Benedict over Francis, Trump over Biden, ‘Alive’ over ‘Occasional Scribbles,’ porridge over cornflakes. Does that make me complict in any supposed wrong behaviour in the your mind? You are equating friendship in a sinister manner with your homophobia, for underneath your contempt for this monk lies your own personal hate for gay people. Utterly reprehensible. I am beginning to think that, with so many comments from Hooligan, he really is a bully at this stage. If he was truly interested in justice and truth he should, in charity, knock on the Abbey doorbell and sit quietly with The Abbot and argue the case for personal renewal. I guess that would require the bravest and highest ideals of Christian, ethical and moral courage. Easier to crucify someone through a blog and easier still to smash that person into the ground. Irrespective of the wrongful harm or miral transgressions (?) done by any cleric or monk, your perceived grievances are not grounds for waging a vendetta. You will have to have very reliable, substantive and validated proof of your allegations, otherwise you may be the one called to repentance.

Apart from the moral wrongs committed by The Abbot and the necessity for him personally to “repent and make amends and a contrite renewal” (if he is guilty) I find it difficult to comprehend why anyone would – if they think a lawsuit might follow – be acting now as judge, juror and executioner. Surely all the implicit bias, innuendo and prejudice expressed about this issue would make finding truth and justice almost impossible. Mr. Hourigan is certainly not a very Christian person in his onslaught on the Abbot. While all of us (if we TRULY belong to God and profess to be OF CHRIST) are called to holiness and perfection and charitable, merciful behaviour – which is a huge ideal and one we fail at – we each have a duty to name wrongdoing and deeply sinful behaviour – but I cannot approve of the unsavoury tactics of continued legal threats, intimidation and harrassment. Since when did humiliating and crucufying another for their “wrongdoing”, however inappropriate, become law? Can we hope that the Abbot – indeed any of us who are ignominiously humiliated because of wrongdoing – might be urged to genuiney repent and follow the path of gospel “metanoia”. God’s grace often works when we are at our weakest. This is a gospel maxim i keep before me every day.

I would have some sympathy with your position — IF — Purcell had “fallen” only on one occasion. However, we have evidence of a sustained pattern of behaviour over many years. Thus, this is something that is integral to his personality, sadly.

As I have written, if Purcell wishes to have as much “fun” as he likes — he is free to do so, but not as the abbot of Mount Melleray Abbey. Your failure to comprehend Purcell’s institutional hypocrisy is staggering, but it does not come as a surprise. Again, if Purcell wishes to go to the Boilerhouse every evening, I do not care; but he should do so NOT as a monk and priest.

However, a Rotal Advocate is being instructed. A letter will be sent to the abbot general, asking him to formally deal with the matter, but if, Dom Eamon continues to sit on the fence; Purcell will be formally canonically denounced to a Roman Tribunal.

Upon adjudication of evidence, this Tribunal has the jurisdiction to remove him as the Abbot and Ordinary, and the can also forcibly laicise, Purcell.

Purcell will not be the first Abbot of Mount Melleray to be removed by a Decree of the Holy See; but he will be the FIRST to be removed for sexual misconduct. Gregory Collins, formerly of Glenstal Abbey jumped before he was pushed. Richard Purcell would do well to consider his position as this issue is not going away…

Now, I look forward to all the hate-filled invective that will come my way, but, please keep it rational and evidence-based. “Legal Eagle” please enlighten us with your encyclopedic knowledge of Canon Law, and the Norms of the Tribunals of the Holy See. I appreciate you will be busy drafting Purcell’s verifying affidavit pursuant to Section 8 of the Defamation Act 2009, but I look forward to your positive contributions.

Mr. Hourigan, nowhere did I say I approve of the moral wrongdoing as levelled against The Abbot. In the contrary I disapprove for the reasons you outline. But I, as a Christian and one who tries to act in a Christ like way, must, while naming the sin, be charitable in my understanding. Anyone who fails in a serious way or who is hypocritical and who blatantly flouts vows must be helped accept responsibility for the consequences if their decisions. I can only hope that the monk at the centre of this issue is engaging in his own repentance and renewal. I do not believe it is your right to ask for a head on a plate as s price for your offended sense of holiness or perfect living. I pray that this monk and all of us will recognise our need for God’s mercy. While Christ never hesitated to condemn all sin and wrongdoing and challenged people to change, he never threw a boulder at nor isteamrolled over the sinner. This, as Christians, it is imperative that we do not make definitive, harsh judgments of others. We trust civil courts to seek justice where criminal wrongdoing occurs and we trust that any person whose failures are writ large will and be encouraged to make amends. Is it for you and me to decide another’s pathway to genuine sorrow? As for your earlier, cynical and snide comments re: Legal Eagle, I find them to be contemptible. Yes, at that time, it was noteworthy to several people that Dom Eamon did not make the journey from Rome for the installation of Abbot Richard Purcell. In fairness, the Abbot General does not normally visit every Abbey when a new abbot is installed; blessed and/or translates; but given that he was previously the Abbot of Mount Melleray, and the Abbot General; it was unusual that he did not attend. He has absence was conspicuous.
@2:40 pm
I am, of course troubled to read that you consider yours truly to be “a totally nasty individual”. I will not be able to sleep tonight. Again, I have never threatened a lawsuit; I have merely highlighted that if anything I have written is untrue — I am willing to defend it before the High Court in Dublin. That is an important distinction; one that several commentators do not appear to appreciate.
This is not about human decency; it is about calling out institutional hypocrisy. There is an important distinction. Purcell’s actions in Roscrea were an abuse of his abbatial authority. We have seen this time and time again in the church. The abuse of authority unchecked leads to petty tyranny with ruinous consequences for the lives of the great number of individuals.
@ 3:24 pm
Pat Buckley and yours truly have not made it a secret that we have been communicating in recent times. My good man, I am from the bogs of Kerry, I have little to be boasting about. Like you, I do not wish to visit public humiliation on any individual; but, the fact of the matter is Richard Purcell has been active on the gay scene for a conspicuous number of years. This fact has been acknowledged by the Abbot General of the Cistercians, Dom Eamon Fitzgerald, who acknowledged that the issue was known to him, but he erroneously believed it was a one-off. The conversation that occurred between Pat Buckley and Dom Eamon Fitzgerald can be slogged out in affidavits, and confirmed by the telephone records of both parties — should the conversation be denied.
@3:43 pm
The act that occurred in the monastery guesthouse at Mount St. Joseph Abbey was between Purcell and a priest who was contemplating a vocation to the monastic life. Using any yardstick, the events that followed can be attributed to Purcell’s abuse of authority. I could be incredibly crude, but one does not need to have a PhD in psychology to work out the consequences of having Purcell as a potential superior. What makes the action all the more egregious is the fact it was known to at least two bishops of the diocese of Killaloe, and they have been complicit in the cover-up of Purcell’s behaviour. All of this will be evidenced in due course. I, for one am grateful for your kind words. Of course, I would prefer not to be dealing with this matter, because one sees the “filth of the church” far too closely than one would like; but little in this life transpires as we expect and so, as we would like.
@4:53 pm
Yes, it is true that the community at Mount Melleray Abbey is greatly diminished. But, some of the large abbeys in Europe had no vocations for over two-decades, however, in recent years, numbers are starting to slowly increased, with many of these monks persevering to solemn profession, and ordination to the priesthood and they have not been leaving. As long as there is life there is hope, however, there is no hope if Richard Purcell remains as the abbot and ordinary. It was remarked to me in recent days that Purcell is the kind of individual that would rather petition for the closure of the monastery to protect his own reputation.

Like

To be frank the mere fact the abbey has already elected a monk of another monastery as abbot indicates one of several things-
1. The monks are all too old, too junior or too sick to be abbot
2. If there is someone electable, they haven’t elected him for some reason. This could be as simple as him just being shy or awkward or as complex as a wildly divided community who loathe each other.
Therefore they have elected a monk from somewhere else and now it has come out that he’s getting his end away.
You are bang on the nail that any monastery with an abbot like that is doomed, but unless there are other candidates for abbot in another monastery your own actions could be the thing which causes the abbey’s demise.
That said it wouldn’t be impossible to build up the abbey with monks elsewhere but it is apparent from the OCSO’s website that they are closing monasteries so this doesn’t sound likely.

7.57: I understand that a proposal was considered by all Cistercian Abbeys to amalgamate into one community and that Roscrea was the more suitable house for such a project. It was rejected by all for now. Perhaps it may have to happen sooner rather than later because of the age profile of members. I have a huge empathy for all the Monks in the different Abbeys as I’m sure they feel very threatened and assaulted by the on-going questions surrounding Purcell. I think we should pray for these monks – mostly elderly men who have given their lives faithfully to God and their Benedictine ideals of striving for perfection and holiness. I have visited and stayed at various monasteries over the years and was blessed by the kindness, prayerfulness and humanity of those whom I encountered. I feel we should remember that they too are very hurt, upset and disturbed by all of this. For their well-being alone, perhaps the present Abbot should resign.

The issue of the school is on my radar. I need to protect the ex-priest, because he is in many ways – a victim of Purcell. He should have made a protected disclosure. In my e-mail to him I suggested that it was the option of senior counsel that he seek legal advice.
I gave Pat Buckley a copy of this e-mail.
I have an e-mail drafted to the school leadership, and it is waiting to be sent at the right time.
Like, I keep writing, I have access to excellent legal advice.
The longer Purcell remains as abbot the more damage will occur.
However, if someone else wishes to made an issue with the school the more the merrier.
