People have started leaving comments on the Mount Mellerary Facebook Live page on which the monastery broadcasts Mass and Night Prayer (Compline)
This because people are both angry and sad that Purcell has not stood aside pending an investigation into his activities.
Yesterday the man who is supposed to be conducting the investigation into Purcell gave the impression on a telephone call with Robert Hourigan that he was not very aware of things at all.
I hope Purcell did not give him that shiner?
I’m genuinely sad to think that the Cistercians are as corrupt as the rest.

Pat, you have encouraged the nastiness against the Mt. Mellary monks. I am disgusted that you take delight in such hatred. I believe you must seriously examine your attitude. Having been to many Cistercian abbeys on retreat, let me say that their integrity, goodness, prayerfulness and efforts at holiness and fidelity to Christ surpasses anything you could only dream about. It is shameful that you are harassing mostly elderly monks now in the Cistercian Abbeys.. And all these horrible crappy judgments coming from someone whose sexual adventures gave him HIV and who has a criminal record to his name.. HYPOCRISY and MORAL bankruptcy written large. You are very blind to your own personal sinfulness.

Wow, 1030, you really are a presumptuous twat. You know nothing about how + Pat might have contracted HIV (which as we know came in to the public domain because of the gross incompetence and error of a court) and chose to make assumptions and judgements and to air a private medical matter in public. I wonder if you would be doing so if + Pat suffered from diabetes or heart problems ? No. Your comment indicates a very prejudicial, discriminatory and judgemental attitude on your part to the issue of HIV and to people who are living with HIV, the majority of whom are far more heroic and admirable that you possibly could be. You should be thoroughly ashamed of yourself.
As to the other point you make, the holy, avuncular, old Cistercian monks that you reference are, whether they like it or not, in some way complicit in the institutional and personal dysfunction of their order and some of its members. Simply by being there and doing nothing to address the tsunami of allegations that have emerged about Purcell and others in their midst, they are complicit whether they know it or not. The right thing for them to do in order to continue to claim the attributes that you give them, is to deal robustly and directly with these allegations and to ensure that the values that they and their monastery and Church are supposed to uphold are upheld. They can do this with compassion and care to all if they wish, but they have to be seen to do something, rather than just burying their heads in the sand, which can be seen as naive, but I am beginning to think it is a sign of disdainful and dismissive arrogance. Whatever, by their present attitude in refusing to engage with these serious allegations, they make themselves complicit in what has happened and what is happening now. We have the right, therefore, to call them out. there is a solution. They just don’t seem willing to take it.

My HIV status was a private health matter from 2001 to 2013.
The judge deliberately revealed it in public as an extra punishment – even though my lawyers asked him not to.
In doing what he did the judge contravened European legislation albeit that judges have a strong element of privilege.
I took it on the chin and have since used it to help others living with HIV and other embarrassing conditions.

Now just saying if the priorβs or abbotβs conduct is bullying, Holy Scripture does not enjoin passivity, it enjoins assertiveness and advocacy. As a serving priest who lives with HIV I find that using it as a stick to beat someone with is pretty horrible and disgusting behaviour. Coming presumably from a Christian is all the more shocking when Christ showed compassion for the blind, the lepers and so many others. Personally, Pat helped me with my HIV and helped secure good health care and a good Consultant for me. Pat accompanied me on visits to the clinic and always rings to check up on me. Pat used his own condition to help me and was there when I needed someone the most. Sadly, many Christians including clergy walked by on the side of the road.

There is no βvicious, nasty crapβ. The allegations are well-founded have been brought to the attention of the Abbot General, repeatedly. He is aware of the name of the now ex-priest that that Purcell misbehaves with in the Mount St. Joseph Abbey, guesthouse. The said ex-priest spoke about what happened and it is widely known among the priests of the Diocese of Killaloe. It has all the characteristics of an βopen secretβ β a bit like the so-called βPontifical Secretβ.
Richard Purcell has every opportunity and indeed the right to publicly deny the allegations, and to prove Pat Buckley and yours truly, wholly incorrect. He has not chosen to do so for whatever arcane reason.
Yes, unlike Richard Purcell, the Abbot of Moone, is a man seeking to be a genuine contemplative. I have met him on one occasion; he is somebody who is genuinely attempting to cultivate an interior life. I have been told he gives generously of his time to people who are seeking to develop an interior prayer life.
I do not accept your characterisation that I have incited hatred; I have merely highlighted the hypocrisy of Abbot Purcell and Abbot Brendan Coffey, and, I will continue to do so. But, you are entitled to your opinion.

There was a concerted effort to keep the behaviour of Gregory Collins under wraps, because it had the potential to embarrass the Holy See and its delicate relationship with the state of Israel. In fact, extraordinary efforts were taken to keep it suppressed. It was yours truly that initially alerted Pat Buckley to Collinsβ behaviour; I provided him with the affidavit that appeared on the blog sometime ago. I also have screenshots of his Collinsβ dating profile. So, when I write that Richard Purcell has been active in the gay scene for quite some time and had sex with an ex-priest and that the Abbot of Glenstal utilising the delegated authority of the Bishop of Meath was seeking an exculpatory statement; I write from a position of insight. The behaviour of Gregory Collins was definitely brought to the attention of the previous Abbot of Glenstal, Dom Mark Patrick Hederman. So, we can infer that Glenstal is not a bastion of monastic virtue.

But, if like Purcell, they are living a double, parallel, duplicitous existence, then they should be called out. Purcell can bring this misery to an end for himself and those he claims to care about, the monks – simple, just stand aside and let the allegations be fully investigated, and if you have done wrong then move on. If not then move back in. That’s what happens everywhere else in every other walk of life.

Regardless of what might be in many of the instances mentioned in passing, this leads me to think of the basics as Sean has advised. There is good decline management and bad decline management. A very good example Rev Collins did set was stopping being an abbot (and monk) from whatever cause. It’s not yet apparent to most of us whether his subsequent position is unacceptable to his current parishioners and whether he can’t now be let be (in himself). While any abbot or bishop is in post, stated discipline should be reasonably maintained. Morals have dynamics – a bully simply doesn’t have to remain a monk, while a victim of one probably has to agonise where he will go. Every actual / prospective superior can: decline promotion, request a reshuffle, resign a position, etc, at his free discretion; there is something suspicious if they “appear to be” victims of their position passed off as false dutifulness.
I think if a “gay” focus gets replaced by a “bullying” one – if applicable – we can give the commenter at 1.12 food for thought whose rule evidently is “do as you would not be done by the police”. People on a money fiddle – which can be artfully salami sliced – often bully which may or may not have sexual frisson added. Bullying and influence are on a spectrum, “making of offers that can’t be refused” being about halfway across. But it just gets more complicated to maintain than it’s worth. tbc

contd. As I see it, the main value in your action so far is to remind a series of authorities to cease being deterred from dealing with what they already knew:
– a school board into seeking an appropriate patron
– charities regulators into regulating charities
– superiors and their associated bishops into constructively supervising, including not leaving inappropriate individuals in authority positions
– forthright (and not labyrinthine) probity in money affairs AND “influence” in ALL quarters
– restoring the neglected concept of Duty Of Care
By the time we’ve finished helping them, prelates and politicians will be able to heave a sigh of relief at Keeping It Simple. As the improvements get mirrored from one bishops’ conference to the next, and from one chain of seminaries to the next, around the world, the Faithful can continue being Faithful. Persons of goodwill could contribute to resettlement funds. Simply dropping out of monkdom / clergyship / bishop rank / any denomination in itself shouldn’t be thought disgraceful. Bishops, nuncios and regulators have to be seen to be pulling with a good will.

The whole monastery saga on here shows the exact strategy of the church to great effect.
1. Ignore complaints.
2. Come out with pious twaddle about we’ve all sinned.
3. Start blustering about how the complainant should ignore the behaviour of the priest.
4. Make actual threats of legal action with threats like ‘ we know where you live, who you are, wouldn’t it be terrible if you lost everything because of your actions pursuing poor Fr X.
I have long been of the opinion that the church was entirely staffed by vicious bullies just looking to get away with whatever they could, and it’s gratifying to see my opinion so amply fulfilled by the threats today.
Mr Hourigan, you are plainly on the money here, just judging by the reaction, and I wouldn’t be surprised if there wasn’t a whole can of worms under this.

Thank you for your intelligent posting.
Yes, it appears to be a coherent strategy to ignore complaints with the concomitant βwe are all sinnersβ nonsense. I am afraid too many people in Ireland in the past ignored the behaviour of priests, and look at the state of the church today. However, I want to make it absolutely and unequivocally clear that I am not accusing Richard Purcell of any criminality.
Truly, I would love Purcell to commence legal proceedings. His silence is telling. I have the advice of one of the most respected and esteemed senior counsels in the country; he remarked it would be the easiest money he would make if Purcell was stupid enough to issue proceedings. Of course, we see the hints at the issuance of proceedings, but I have had sufficient exposure to quite a bit of litigation over the years to discern their hollow nature.
However, I do NOT share your opinion that the church is entirely staffed of vicious bullies; but, there are some nasty examples of that type among the Irish bishops. One or two examples immediately come to mind.
I truly regret to write that I am βon the moneyβ, and there is a lot more to this saga to unfold. Of course, the million-dollar question is who will they sacrifice to make this problem go away. And when?

Again, you are entitled to your opinion, but I am going to disagree; because, I am an argumentative man from Kerry. Now, I have no background nor do I have any theological training, but I do know from listening to the Gospel at Mass from over the years that Christ was unfailing in his criticism of the hypocrisy the Pharisees. Whited sepulchres, and all that good stuff.
Now, let us unpack your statement a little further. Nobody forced Richard Purcell to be sexually active with the visiting priest who was considering a vocation to the Cistercian way of life at Mount St. Joseph Abbey. Using any yardstick this was an abuse of Purcellβs abbatial authority. Furthermore, nobody forced Richard Purcell to visit the Boilerhouse, and/or engage in sexual activity while visiting that establishment with an ex-seminarian. Nobody forced him to be active on the internet and/or meet-up with men for sexual activity that he met on-line. People have come forward with a list of names about Purcell. They are known to Pat Buckley.
In fact, nobody forced Richard Purcell to become a monk, nobody forced him to be ordained a priest; nobody forced him to accept election as Abbot; in fact, nobody is forcing him to remain in the monastery. Thus, the antecedents of this scandal is the very behaviour of Richard Purcell, and nobody else. I do, except, it is distressing for any elderly monk to learn that their abbot who according to the rule of St. Benedict holds the place of Christ of the monastery was acting in such a disreputable manner. But, we know Richard Purcell will not be the first to have acted in this manner, and he certainly will not be the last. But, you are wilfully blind to his behaviour and attempting to defend what is morally indefensible. Again, if Purcell wants to have as much βfunβ as he likes at the Boilerhouse, he is free to do so, but not as a monk, priest and the Abbot of Mount Melleray Abbey.
I am aware that this matter is being discussed internally in some of the Cistercian houses here in Ireland. One particular abbot is keen to ascertain more about me, but he does not believe what has been asserted about Purcell. The abbot will learn in due course that what has been written is in fact, true. Yesterday afternoon, I spoke with the Father Immediate of Mount Melleray Abbey, Dom Michael Ryan, so I imagine he is having conversations about yours truly with the leadership of the Order in Rome.
Now purely for the sake of discussion β would you be expressed the same sentiments if I was highlighting my contempt and disgust at Fr. Gerard McCallion who was appointed novice master by Dom Eamon Fitzgerald having returned to Mount Melleray Abbey having sexually abused children in Northern Ireland? Would you write the same words the defending Dom Eamon Fitzgerald in light of the fact McCallion was appointed novice master by the now Abbot General? Now there is a legitimate question.
At that time was the behaviour of Gerard McCallion a matter for his conscience? At that time was the behaviour of Dom Eamon Fitzgerald a matter for his conscience? Should it have been a matter of discussion for the community? The answer is a resounding, no. What we are dealing with here is institutional hypocrisy of the worst possible kind, and it needs to be called out. So, save us all your fatuous and specious words about conscience.

If he was a βfucking regularβ, why do you not get in contact with either Pat Buckley or myself. Tell us what you know, and more importantly β will you make an affidavit? We already have quite a bit of information, but I am all for making it stronger.

At last, the Protestants are apologising for the role in the Holocaust, founded no doubt on the scatological antisemitism preaching of Martin Luther.

I have news for you. Luther’s ‘scatological anti-semitism’ was learned at the feet of ‘Holy Mother Church’.

We going to be treated to his Squirt account? It would be wrong to share The Grindr account of the former Abbot since heβs a former Abbot and whether he was pushed or went of his own accord, heβs gone and itβs nobodys business.

Absolutely NOT. I have no intention of making it public. The former Gregory Collins, OSB is acting in a far more honourable manner than Purcell and his ilk i.e., he is no longer masquerading as a celibate monk.
I only make reference to it to make send a clear message that I can evidentially confirm everything I have written on this blog.

Collins acted in an honourable manner?
BULLSHIT!
He was given Hobson’s choice, the hypocrite!
There is nothing honourable in trying to save one’s greasy skin.

Bishop Pat, is what, initially, was described as a migraine, building sufficient force to

Will this saga roll on for much longer?

It is difficult to understand the delay.
It seems to me, Irelandβs Monastic heritage might be under threat.

Pat I am on the verge of going crazy and round the twist with this endless shite about Hourigan and Purcell etc. Can we not focus on something else for a change. Just one day away from it all isnβt too much to ask. Surely there is scandal in other places?

I was going to ask that we have another day to have a summation of the salient facts / allegations.
I only came here because I was told about it through someone who uses Facebook and they were alerts to it through watching prayer service on face book
Iβm trying to catch up but so many messages and too little time.

I agree A@5:06. But the βendless shiteβ as you call it, doesnβt cause me distress, just utter boredom, and Iβve just scanned past it for many days now.
Pat: I think the blog has descended into a tittle tattling cesspool of clerical bitching, one upmanship, and sexual innuendo. It is certainly not a healthy advertisement for religion, let alone the RCC for any interested observer happening upon the blog.
I agree with criticism of the wrongdoings you reveal, but surely thereβs a better way than continuing to allow the way the blog has developed?

7.17: Whatever about Houriganβs stories and his exhaustive narratives of back and forth, promises of all kinds, threats to all sinners and extensive affidavitsβ¦invitations to others to tell allβ¦etc..one thing that is beginning to manifest itself is his penchant β perhaps unknown to himself β for lurid, porno, vulgar commentaryβ¦I have a realisation that we are dealing with a closet homosexual, in denial, probably spurned and someone who is homophobic, again unknown to himself.. His preponderance and obsession on sexual sins, however egregious in his mind, are revelatory of a psychologically and sexually wounded man. Pat, no great surprise at the lack of episcopal response. They are as remote and unaccountable as pre-revoluntionary French aristocrats.
Even the shops stewards of the clerical whingersβ union, the Association of unCatholic Priests, got the brush-off to their latest moan.
