GARDA INVESTIGATION INTO SILVERSTREAM STILL PROCEEDING.

The Blog has heard from a very reliable source that the Garda investigation into Silverstream is still an active and open investigation.

They are concentrating on the financial irregularities and the claims of blackmail and extortion.

It seems that the Visitation team which includd Purcell and Coffey did not answer all the Garda questions?

I know, dear, which is why I expressed my preference in the past future perfect. I know that you don’t understand this, so I’ll make it ultra-simple for you:

‘I would have suggested Sean Connery for the role of Kirby’… (the following was ellipted, but understood…by the intelligent) ‘HAD HE NOT DIED’.

Who’s the ‘gombeen clownl’ now?

An accomplisged actor Rhys Meyer, t’ be sure. But would he have the creative versatility to understand and play such a multi-layered character as Deenihan? I suggest Liam Neeson instead, with that tall Northern presence, and resonant voice. (Not sure, though, whether he could bring off Denihan’s Southern brogue.😕)

Like

Good casting, Neeson and Deenihan have a certain menacing edge as seen in ‘Taken’. I’m sure he could be convincing.

I would have suggested Sean Connery for the role of Kirby. Didn’t Connery play a Franciscan friar in that medieval murder mystery, The Name of the Rose? He would have been just right for the enigmatic, Jesus-chatting Kirby.

MMM, as a former Social Worker, in the context of numerous reports into CSA, (its been acknowledged this is not a CSA issue), covering up by Bishops, abuse of power, criminality among some within the clerical fraternity: do you not think these issues, the dynamics involved, not to mention the positions of those allegedly involved, is important to the Community at large?

Yes@11:21: I do. But as to which monk has sex with another cleric, and all the shenanigans within “the cloisters” I’m not in least bit interested. If there has been impropriety by abuse of positional power between adults, clerical or otherwise, that’s for the institutions to deal with: I have no interest in it.
Where CSA, ( for clarity: abuse of children by adults), by adults clerical or otherwise, is involved yes it’s vital to have the public informed.
I may have missed CSA info in the course of this unending “monks and Abbey ” saga, for I’ve found it so banal and scrolled past much of it 😳

There is no David Barrins in the database. There has only been one student with the surname Barrins, from 1903.

The classpieces are of the IV Divinity ordination class each year, so a student who left earlier would not be on it.

Every seminarian who matriculated is on the database, irrespective of whether they left, were ordained or died. The classpiece is the deacons who are ordained priest in the year, or due to be. Irish College, Rome ordinands are on the Maynooth classpieces too. Each student on the classpiece pays for his own photo and clubs together to pay for the large framed picture which is displayed on the cloisters of Maynooth. Each student also gets gets a smaller version of the large Maynooth classpiece. You see those smaller ones in presbyteries. MJB will have been given his.

But could someone address the fact that Purcell allegedly rode Dargan before Purcell was ordained and he is a lot younger than Dargan? This changes the entire dynamic somewhat.
Purcell is at least 10 years Dargan’s junior. He wasn’t even a priest, never mind the abbot, when he (allegedly) “parked his bike up the dirt track” in the guesthouse.
Dargan was a priest and a good bit older than RP. So, if anything, if the alleged rogering occurred, is not Dargan the one with the greater “power”?
And what exactly has the whistleblower in Silverstream to do with Purcell? How would whistleblower know anything about Dargan and Purcell’s alleged dalliance in the kitchen? How could whistleblower exculpate Purcell? Did whistleblower know of RP’s alleged forays into the Boilerhouse and how? This whole thing is as clear as mud!!

Bp Pat, although embarrassing, Dom Purcell’s “sexual impropriety” will not be considered serious (which it is not) regardless of vows, etc., unless there was some sort of other scandal attached to it.
For example, Kitty and alleged financial mismanagement, Collins and the international incident, or Rory and Grindr contact with a former pupil.
A couple of guys having it off in a kitchen, despite the safety aspects to it, is not going to cause a dispute between two nation-states, nor is just visiting a gay sauna, dirty cinema, or peep show, even if they are priests or monks.
Just my opinion.

Don’t hold yer breath, folks, in the hope that a largely Catholic Irish police force will act impartially in its investigation of Silverstream. It is not all that long ago that the justice agency of the Catholic state, the Rep of Ireland, turned nitpicking legal somersaults to avoid extraditing to Northern Ireland one of the most prolific priest paedophiles this island has ever seen, Fr Brendan Smyrh. It protected this pervert for as long as it could, and it will do the same again with the holy folk at Silverstream. The institutional Irish state bends the knee to Rome, and it always will.
I have no doubt that the Catholic Irish police force will do an excellent job by ensuring that Catholic clergy and religious at Silverstream are never brought to justice.

I am not Irish or Catholic, but I am gay, so I feel, at least in one respect, I am entitled to comment on the blog from time to time.

I am not sure you can make a comparison with Brendan Symth and the strange goings-on at Silverstream. However, I think the former power and influence the Catholic Church used to have in the republic has disintegrated.

IMHO, I believe the donors themselves will be anxious a proper inquiry is carried out at Silverstream by the Garda and the Irish Charity Regulator to establish what happened to almost half of their donations.

It goes without saying, Bp Pat and Mr Hourigan will also be very interested in their report.

I used to live in Armagh and ine evening my wife went for a spin across the border. She was caught speeding by the Guards. A few weeks later we got a letter saying that she had to report to Castleblayney garda station to have her license endorsed and pay a fixed-penalty notice.
I wanted to throw the letter in the fire on the basis that the Free State had no power to impose penalty points on a UK license, and I denounced it as an attempt to stick their nose into British affairs. “The Guards’ writ ends at the border”, I said, “They have no jurisdiction over a British Ulsterwoman.”.
I was ignored. I tagged along for the crack when she took herself to Castleblayney garda station. They were astonished that someone had crossed the border to pay a fine and they looked a bit raging too. No doubt they would have to fill in various pointless forms because of it.
What I found most remarkable of all was that they had a crucifix on the wall of the public enquiries area.

He’ll be fine ,he is young and strong. You have a better chance of winning the lotto or being struck by lightning than dying of Covid19. To date in the Republic 2000 people have died with covid19, not necessarily of covid19, they happened to have it when they died. 1,500 of them were vulnerable people in nursing homes, the HSE decided to clear out the hospitals of elderly patients (bedblockers) in the expectation of a Tsunami of cases that never happened. they never tested these patients for covid, they brought covid to the most vulnerable in nursing homes, these 1,500 deaths can be laid squarely at the feet of the HSE. Will anyone be held accountable, of course not, much like the cast of characters in the Monastery saga, who in fairness haven’t killed anyone. Of the remainder if a healthy individual going to work, who had covid with no symptoms, was killed in a car crash his death would be recorded as covid, not road traffic accident. NEPHET is all about protecting the shambles that is the HSE, four administrators to every health professional. Does anyone who reads this blog know personally anyone who has died of Covid19?

‘Bedblockers’?

‘The HSE decided to CLEAR OUT the hospitals of elderly patients (bedblockers)…’? What? Were they sewage clogging up the system, these human beings?

The ironic bit is your criticising the HSE for not first testing these patients for Covid-19 and blaming it for at least 1500 deaths in nursing homes after the elderly patients it ‘cleared out’ of hospitals were then flushed into these unsuspecting places.

WTF! You yourself speak of these elderly patients as ‘less than’, so why are you surprised and annoyed that the HSE decided not to take the precaution of first testing them for Covid-19? Why would it waste money on ‘less thans’.

If you want to apportion blame, pal, look first to your ageist self. Such attitudes and language as you expressed on this blog can only encourage others to dehumanise the elderly to the point where they are considered a bloody nuisance, and not worth bothering about medically.

I’m really glad you are standing next to me right now.

Ponder this, you smug idiot: some day you, too, will be old, frail, and vulnerable. Vulnerable to what? To the patronising, dismissive, discriminatory, callous and unchristian outlook of self-important pricks like you. But don’t bother complaining, because YOU will have set the precedent, you utter fool!

Like

Keyboard Warrior@11.40, Bedblockers is demeaning term used informally within the HSE to describe elderly patients who are not sick enough to be in hospital but not well enough to go home and cannot afford nursing home costs of €6,000 to €8,000 per month. The term was coined within the HSE, not by me.
I’m in my 60’s and I’m not your pal, nor do I want to be. I am a front line worker who has worked throughout this pandemic. I meet a large number of people during the course of my work, I’ve met a few that have had covid19 most had mild symptoms, some have had none, one that was very sick but did not need hospitalisation.
I have seen many businesses closed down, people being made unemployed, trying to pay a morgage, bills and feed children on €350 a week. i can only imagine the depression and suicides that the looming recession is going to bring with it and the punitive taxation that is going to be levied on the coming generations to pay for it.
The strategy being pursued by Dr Doom and NEPHET is costing the country a fortune and is quite simply not working. Their carelessness in discharging elderly patients into nursing homes without first testing for covid is in my opinion criminally negligent.

I don’t give the proverbial who or what you are in the Republic of Ireland’s health service; this is totally irrelevant (as is most of your rambling, self-justifying and praise-seeking post) to your abuse of the elderly-vulnerable by refering to them as ‘bedblockers’, and by alluding to them as waste clogging up hospital pipelines. You ought to be ashamed of yourself, especially since you admitted that the term was ‘demeaning’, and that you yourself work in that health service.

If you truly believe that such a pejorative is demeaning to the elderly-vulnerable, then why don’t you do something useful and set your colleagues a more edifying example by refusing to use the term, and by calling them out when they do?

However, we should thank the poster at 11:40 for illustrating so effectively the point made by 10:32 – and endorsed by my own earlier humble contribution in reply – that so many claims made during Covid 19 are frankly hysterical and unsubstantiated. Every now and then someone starts fishing for something on MJB. Can we just accept that he has moved on very creditably and wish him well? As for the comment on Covid 19 at 10:32, it is the same dishonest and manipulative reporting as in the UK which creates unnecessary fear and anxiety and is stocking up mountains of future economic, social and psychological problems for our already beleaguered young people – not to mention those numerous cases of sick people who have been unable to access normal treatment this year in order to “protect the NHS”. Protect it from what? From doing its job? And in answer to the question, no, I don’t know anybody who has contracted Covid 19, let alone died from it. Nor do I know anybody who does know somebody infected. For me the whole shoddy business has caused me never to trust again any organization which puts its own self-interest and claim to special know-how above the common good – I am thinking particularly of the UK government ( Scotland even worse ) and the sodding RCC.

Well, notwithstanding the appearance of a superannuated old fart, he talks a lot of sense. For me, as a life-long Guardian reader and Labour voter, the BBC, as well as the NHS, had been a hallmark of faith. Many Brits put as much trust in these twin institutions as the Irish had placed in the RCC – and we all know how that went. The NHS has recently achieved its ultimate apotheosis as our national religion during the COVID 19 “crisis”; this will be its undoing. The parallel but not dissimilar religion promoted by the BBC, as funded by its licence-payers, who are far more “diverse” than the BBC will ever be, is “woke culture”. Meanwhile the quality, range and outreach of its programming have been on the skids at least since the eighties when Granada and Channel 4 were putting out far better and cutting-edge programmes.
I trust the relevance to the concerns of this blog is apparent. As with the RCC, don’t take the claims to virtue of any organization – or indeed individual – at face value: scratch the surface, and you’ll see what they’re really like.

I was on a retreat directed by Mark Kirby some years ago. Everyone was raving about how inspiring for me, but, for some reason, he gave me the creeps. Now I know why. It was the same inner feeling I got years ago when I used to see Jimmy Saville on TV.

If a social worker or a guard or a doctor or a teacher has it off with a man in the Boilerhouse it’s ok. If someone who has taken a vow of celibacy does it then it is wrong and they should be dismissed and stop living a lie. If it’s suddenly ok then there will not be a priest shortage if all the ex-Seminarians are taken back.

“As for Robert Hourigan we only know what he writes and never about himself apart from being from the bogs of Kerry”.
Indeed.
@3:43 pm
I have had very busy day. It is only now that I am in a position to catch-up with some of the commentary on the blog. The age difference is wholly inconsequential. It was an abuse of abbatial authority. And, if they are prepared to cover-up this behaviour — what else are they prepared to cover-up? But, it is not my opinion that counts — ….
@6:20pm
I am happy to confirm I am nowhere near Mount Melleray Abbey. Ironically, Pat Buckley received more information about Mount St. Joseph Abbey in a telephone call some days ago, and that in due course may-be the subject of an affidavit.
If you are going to be insulting – please be more original — “a nasty christian” really does not cut the mustard. Lacking integrity, we all lack integrity, however, unlike Richard Purcell and other individuals; I did not embrace the monastic life with its commitment to chastity.

I agree with you, Robert, about the alleged behaviour being incompatible with priestly and religious life. But are you certain he was the abbot at the time the alleged sex took place?

ND tried his vocation with the Cistercians 20 years ago. Purcell wasn’t ordained at that stage – never mind abbot. They would have been in their late 30s and early 20s respectively.

How could he abuse his abbatial authority if he wasn’t the abbot? If anything, ND had more “standing” than Purcell as he was already a priest for about 11 years by that stage?

Dargan’s clerical “career” has been a bit like Lannigan’s Ball – stepping in and stepping out again. He has now left the priesthood which, if the alleged behaviour is true, is the right thing for him.

I am not going to make any comment about Neil Dargan. However, all I will write is that Purcell’s behaviour is completely incompatible with the obligations of solemn monastic profession and/or the priesthood.

Robert Hourigan at 8:22pm. I agree with you about Purcell’s behaviour if what he is accused of is true.

But can you tell us that you know for certain that the alleged sex in the kitchen took place when Purcell was abbot?

Because, if it did, then it was more recent. And yes it would be an abuse of abbatial authority – no matter what the age difference – IF he was abbot.

7.21: Mr. Hourigan, who cares about your so called hard day’s work….doing your nasty orchestrating again…listening to your script writer? Have a look at the hard work of parenting and you’ll know what “hard” really means..Yes, you are a nasty Christian. Sadly, smug, self righteous individuals like you invariably fail to see their own moral and spiritual deficiencies and give themselves an authority to say what they like. That’s not JUSTICE. Your arrogance doesn’t cut mustard with me. I, along wuth many, many others share your “moral” outrage at any abuse, wrong doing, criminal or otherwise. You do not have a monopoly on outrage. However, your harsh, judgmental and relentless pursuance of “failed” monks or clerics is unacceptable. And we all know Jesus cracked the whip at hypocrites but he didn’t leave them for dead on the roadside nor disturb the dead in their graves. You have written an ocean of narratives – repetitively – about Mt. Mellary, Silverstream and Glenstal that you must be exhausted. Do you expect a law suit against you?? All of us desire integrity of conscience and I feel you lack such at the moment in your hounding after those who, while much is expected of them as religious, are obviously flawed human beings, like most of us, and require help and therapy where necessary and a complete “metanoia” with God’s grace.. Surely, the civil authorities ought to be told if “criminal abuse” of any kind has occurred.? If I were to treat some people in my life with such contempt and nastiness, I’m sure I’d be responsible for destructive, self harm decisions taken by others because of bullying, harrassment and intimidation.

Well, I am grateful for your kind words describing me as a “nasty Christian”. To be frank, I really do not care whether my arrogance in your subjective opinion is cutting any mustard.
You see that kind of posting that you have just made is really advantageous to my cause — it annoys people, it makes them provide me with information. My inbox this afternoon received a number of very interesting e-mails that have been shared with Pat Buckley.
I am pleased to confirm I am not exhausted — in fact, I am invigorated. As I utilise speech recognition software — Dragon Group of Professional Version 16, I am able to utilise my time effectively.
In answer to your question, NO, I am not expecting a lawsuit, but it is always best to be prepared. In fact, I would greatly welcome the issuance of legal proceedings from Purcell and others, because it would allow me the opportunity to present my evidence before a High Court judge and a jury. If there was anything untrue about what I have written about Richard Purcell — he would greatly welcome the opportunity to expose me as a contemptible liar. However, he has not chosen to do so, but he is welcome to do so at any time.
Well, some but not all persons desire “integrity of conscience”, but Purcell’s behaviour was not a one-time occurrence. I am happy to accept that I am contemptible and nasty — because, I am writing the truth.
Richard Purcell can issue a public denial of the accusations through the auspices of the Father Immediate, Dom Michael Ryan, OCSO, the abbot of Bolton Abbey. A statement can be made on the website of Mount Melleray Abbey, on the Abbey’s Facebook page, and the home page of the website of the Cistercians of the Strict Observance.
However, if Purcell is serious about a “metanoia”, he would do the honourable thing and resign as the Abbot of Mount Melleray Abbey, and return to the life of a simple monk, saying mass privately, and leading a life of obscurity, and never leaving his monastery, and agreeing to a permanent prohibition on his use of the phone, Internet, and all forms of social media.
So instead of rabbiting on about yours truly on Pat Buckley’s blog this evening, I suggest you have a large whiskey and turn your outrage to Purcell’s behaviour instead of being so condemnatory of mine. Then, have another large whiskey, and you will sleep so much better.

Hooligan at 8.46: your last paragraph, I’m afraid is a case of your mask of honour slipping. It reveals your bitchy, nasty side. Pretty miserable, indeed. Perhaps some spoken truths about you are just painfully all too truthful!

8.46: You can rage all you like Ribert about your spiritual and moral sensitivities being hurt but making a definitive judgment about anyone is not your gift. You are awaiting, promising, expecting and emailing so much that you are tiresome. I do not believe any potential law suit could be taken in any just, fair or balanced way because of the allegations, bias, scurrilous comments made by you. Perhaps you may be a good Christian but I wonder which “God” you proclaim to represent? if it is the God of Jesus Christ, you have chosen selective passages to justify your actions. I do not condone any wrong doing, ever, but I would not publicly humiliate, hound after or feel it my role to crucify any sinner. Where there is proven criminal abuse of any kind, I trust the civil jurisdictions to dispense justice, not a catalogue of condemnations from a wounded “christian”..and I would have no hesitation in contacting civil authorities re: knowledge 8f abuse, as i have done twice in my life.

Can you imagine a world free, absolutely, of Cistercians and Benefictines, and ALL Romanist clergy! These ULTIMATE parasites, scroungers, and moochers?

Throw off the shackles of parasitical ROMANISM, a vile evil not intended by Christ.
Just thinkin’. (Oh! Like.😊)

Indeed I can Magna.
But a better thought might be to imagine a world without religion. Some think however that our human evolution has developed a “need/dependence ” for some “mystical solution” to our knowledge of our vulnerabilities, particularly the inevitability of death.
So if religion was absent, maybe its a moot point as to what might replace it?
It’s fascinating, and very instructive to listen to Sam Harris, Christopher Hitchens, Richard Dawkins, Stephen Fry, Lawrence Krauss , Aaron Ra and similar polymaths debate such issues. There’s many such debates easily found on YouTube and I recommend “He that has ears to hear, let him hear, etc etc”
MMM
PS: Perhaps Jeremiah 5:21 might also be appropriate “None so blind etc, etc”!
