SHINING A LIGHT – ABBOT BRENDAN COFFEY OF GLENSTAL.

Here are two emails from Brendan Coffey to Sarah regarding the Silverstream ill-treatment of the whistle blowing monk.

Read closely and you will see the Coffey tactic.

Brendan Coffey To “Sarah” 17 Oct, 2020, 6:26 am

Dear Sarah,

Many thanks for your email yesterday which I think has been a helpful development and a very positive sign. Let me begin by saying I absolutely accept your integrity and honesty in this matter, and I think our engagement might help bring about some improvement and perhaps a way forward in this sorry mess.

Let me also make clear (as the media reports about Silverstream are all inaccurate) that there are two open investigations. The Charity Regulator is looking at the Priory’s finances. This investigation is almost complete, and they have only one point on which they are seeking further clarification and that relates to a matter of governance procedure, not missing money.

The police are also looking into Dom Benedict’s complaint, I hope this will not take too much longer. The Canonical Visitation remains open, largely for practical reasons, but there is no ongoing canonical investigation either by the diocese or the Holy See. The Holy See is fully up to date on the present circumstances of Silverstream. The reports in the media suggesting ongoing canonical investigations are simply untrue. There is no possibility that Silverstream will be suppressed, this is all utter nonsense. I just wanted to make that clear. I am in complete agreement with you regarding Fr Benedict’s canonical rights and his current position as a member of the community. You will find that I will always uphold these rights for every member of the community, including Fr Benedict. I have in the past pointed out to Fr Benedict that with “rights” come “duties” and both are important.

The recent media exposure and reports on this famous Blog have created a complete mess for everyone,

Fr Benedict included, and it is mostly falsehoods making use of Fr Benedict’s complaints to damage Silverstream and the Catholic Church in general. I am willing to explore with you how we might go about correcting some of these slanderous errors.

Incidentally, I think Fr Benedict is correct to be worried that the author of this Blog will eventually turn on him. This, unfortunately, appears to be his modus operandi. The author of this Blog would have no time for people like Fr Benedict, for what Fr Benedict believes and holds dear, or for anyone who follows the extraordinary form and would love nothing better than to bring everyone involved into disrepute.

Let me begin with the feeling in the community of Silverstream. I know Fr Benedict will be reading this and I do not wish to be hurtful to him in what I say, but I need to point out that the community in Silverstream are absolutely furious with Fr Benedict for two reasons.

Firstly, they hold him personally responsible for bringing their monastery into disrepute and tarnishing their own reputations and personal integrity by depicting Silverstream as a den of iniquity.

Secondly, the use of the term “sexual abuse” in relation to Dom Mark they find unforgivable. They are united in this feeling and this is why they do not communicate with Dom Benedict – they do not want to.

This is the present reality I’m afraid and it has nothing to do with any general instruction from me or anyone else. There is a lot of anger and hurt and I think, given the circumstances, this is understandable.

Your suggestion of a statement to clarify matters is worth exploring. I think Fr Benedict’s identity is already in the public domain, thanks to the contributors to that Blog and so identifying himself is not necessarily giving any new information away.

I don’t think there is any need to mention that Fr Benedict is not standing for election. The fact is, there is no election and in those circumstances, I think that would appear pompous and rather silly and possibly detract from the rest of the statement. The important element is to clarify the nature of Fr Benedict’s complaint – and especially to clarify what the complaint is not about.

Fr Benedict never suggested the monks of Silverstream were degenerate and sexually immoral and neither, as you rightly say, did he make a complaint of sexual abuse against Dom Mark.

The complaint Fr Benedict made was one of financial impropriety, bad boundaries, inappropriate behaviour etc…. Sexual abuse, as you correctly infer, conjurs up a set of possibilities which are of a completely different order.

I want to add here that I completely respect Fr Benedict’s right to make his complaint and he has every right to be heard and to have this complaint properly investigated. From what I have said here you will see that this is in process and the outcome will be whatever it will be. This is not the point, the point is the distortion, by others, of what Fr Benedict has said and the enormous damage this has caused to reputations and Silverstream Priory. In saying all of that, however,

I do wish to point out that Fr Benedict has used the term, “sexual abuse” with us during the Visitation. He has used it to the Bishop and to other members of the Silverstream Community. When he explains the content of his complaint it is clear what he intends, but he does need to be more precise in his use of language and terminology to avoid causing misunderstanding and these misleading reports.

Like you I was inclined to believe an exclaustration of some kind might find a way forward for us, but I found Fr Benedict resistant to this idea when I suggested it. The pandemic is certainly a complicating factor and I do, of course, understand this. So, how can we move this forward.

I suggest you work on some statement with Fr Benedict. It would need to be very short, because, as we know the media have a habit of editing what is said – sometimes to make it say something else. We will need to think long and hard about the desirability of this statement and the timing, as we don’t want to make things worse. The media advisors of the Diocese will be able to offer advice regarding these elements.

Above all, it needs to be clear that this is something Fr Benedict wishes to do himself and that it was not suggested or mandated in any way by me or the Bishop. I think this may be a helpful first step.

There is one other matter and you can speak with Fr Benedict about it and get back to me. Fr Benedict has in his possession a document in French (which has been shared with the Visitation, Diocese and authorities) written by Dom Mark. It is the story of much of Dom Mark’s life. Much of the content of this document already appeared in abbreviated form on the Blog. It tells how Dom Mark was abused as a child, how he struggled with this for much of his life, how he engaged in therapy for an extended period, lost his way in life several times, before eventually getting his life together before he moved to Tulsa and then to Silverstream.

The document doesn’t really deal with the period of Dom Mark’s life when he knew Fr Benedict and has no direct bearing on Fr Benedict’s complaint. In any case this document is in the possession of the Diocese and the authorities.

My suggestion is that Fr Benedict should delete this document from his computer as it is inappropriate to hold this kind of material on another person.

It was deeply wounding to Dom Mark to know that the entire world was reading about his sexual abuse as a child within his extended family. I think you will agree that this was unnecessary and very cruel.

There has also been a concerted campaign on this Blog recently regarding Abbot Richard, my fellow Visitor. The vile things being said about him are often connected to the Visitation of Silverstream and these attacks only began after the Visitation. I’m not sure if this might also be addressed in some way? I am aware that Fr Benedict is at pains to point out that he did not directly cause any of this and I am willing to accept that, however, it is his material which created this disaster and he needs to take the lead in putting matters right. If this is agreeable, then we can discuss how we might move things forward for

Fr Benedict. I should add that I am willing to accept now that Fr Benedict is engaging in good faith. I should also add, however, that the monks of Silverstream will need a lot more convincing than I, that this is so. The community has suffered much in recent weeks and their anger is understandable and reasonable. They are a completely innocent victim of all of this. An initial search for the missal you mentioned last evening wasn’t successful. However, in daylight and with more time I expect they will find it for you. Sarah, once again my thanks for your intervention in this most unpleasant business. My hope is that we will together be able to chart some way out of the mess which has been created, as this is to the mutual benefit of all. I will not be able to write such long emails with regularity, for obvious reasons. I hope now, if we are agreed, we can begin to move things forward, each working with our respective constituencies to a common goal. With thanks,

Brendan

Dear Sarah,

Unfortunately, more material has appeared on the Blog this morning regarding Silverstream in a strange parallel to our communications. I made it clear from the outset that no fruitful engagement is possible between us if this “noise” continued on the Blog

or in the media, regardless of its origin. Given this situation the only possible way forward I now see is to await the outcome of the civil investigations, which must be nearing their conclusion after so many months, and on foot of these findings take appropriate actions.

Many thanks for your efforts to resolve these matters,

Brendan

PAT

I have a number of very pertinent questions for Brendan Coffey

1.   Does asking someone to delete evidence from their hard drive not smack of the COVER UP for which the RCC is now infamous around the globe?

2.   Do you believe that it is appropriate for a monk or abbot to be engaging in promiscuous sexual activity.

3.   Can you comment on Dom Gregory Collins’ assertion that Glenstal is a GAY COMMUNITY?

4.   What safeguarding practice allows a monk previously exclaustrated and laicized for safeguarding issues from another monastery be received by Glenstal as a religious and to be put in charge of the school chess club?

5.   Is it your opinion that a prior who exposes his genitalia to his inferior monks, visits monk’s cells at ungodly hours and pays off an extortioner is NOT gulity of sexual abuse?

6.   Is indecent exposure no longer a crime or a moral fault?

7.   Is it not MARK KIRBY and not the whistle blower who has brought Silverstream into disrepute?

8.   Why are you trying to elicit a statement from the whistle blower to get you all out of this mess that you all created?

9.   Are you, Brendan Coffey, a fit person to be the safeguarding person for your global religious order.

10.               If you are trying to cover up all this Silverstream stuff what else are you covering up?

11.               Are you calling the Cistercian Abbot General a liar when he reveals Richard Purcell’s activities in Roscrea?

155 replies on “SHINING A LIGHT – ABBOT BRENDAN COFFEY OF GLENSTAL.”

So, basically, the Boiler House-frequenting, kitchen lothario abbot Richard Purcell is a victim. Dom Mark Kirby, tabernacle message receiver/flasher is a victim. The complainant is not a victim and is to be exclaustered, shunned, never spoken to again?
Am I right?
Also, can anyone explain why the abbot of Glenstal is chewing the fat about internal Silverstream matters with an itinerant American quasi-Anglican student? I suggest that the monks of Silverstream point some of their anger in that direction. Is Dom Mark Kirby happy that the abbot of Glenstal is sharing highly confidential information in his email exchanges with this character?

Like

Abbot Brendan appears to have missed the point. The reason people started to comment about Abbot Richard was due to the fact the Abbot Richard agreed to be part of a Visitiation into alleged sexual impropriety. Does Abbot Brendan not consider it weird for an Abbot to showing his cock to strangers?

If Fr Benedict takes his case through the canonical courts – I hope he does – those courts will surely query why Abbot Brendan was handling these matters via a student.

11.49 Abbot Brendan would not be dealing with a “Student2 as this student likely be the Advocate for her Monk Friend.
Abbot Brendan has nothing to take through Canonical routes with this case as he is the visitor team on behalf of Bishop Tom.
But Abbot Brenan should have taken Brother Anslem Hunt through Canonical routes and kicked him out as he could have placed the School at risk.
Many on here have said Brendan is weak

When I worked as a security engineer I had to have a BS7858 Clearance, directly with the local Alarm Policy Unit at Merseyside Police’s Headquarters – no middle people like DBS. We had to have a 5-year work history and credit check done, also.
Then, because we looked after most of the security system on the schools in Merseyside, we had to have an Enhanced DBS with each local authority / council: Liverpool C.C.; Section Council; Halton Borough Council; Cheshire West and Chester.
Then, a Standard DBS (subject to R.o.O’s Act 1974) for the Santander; NatWest and the Trustees Savings Bank, (before Stanley Security swiped the contracts after TSB was floated on the London Exchange 🙄).

Who is in charge of safeguarding there? Is there NO regulation?
My own experience of safeguarding is just as worse as the abuses I was subjected to.
However, I am glad this is now being correctly addressed.
I also hope changes will be made, to prevent more people being abused- please God x

How can Abbot Coffey say with such certainty that the allegations about Silverstream are baseless when the civil authorities haven’t concluded their enquiries? We are back to the reflex RCC clerical response of saying that allegations are lies.

Just read the update on Glasgow. Paisley and Motherwell. Concur with all of the answers. The Canon and Monsignor are no longer a couple and seem to have put it all behind them after 30 years. Wee Joe’s eyes are deteriorating and he is considering retiring, Phil no longer wants an Auxiliary as his 2 preferred choices declined the post, Campbell is at Court in January and the PF is still considering the case against McGarrity.

Jardine Cheers think a mistake I don’t think they declined it I understand Rome says no right to succession so the two did not want it to be an assistant to +Keenan. when he goes to Glasgow.

Bishop Toal has done Motherwell Very well tackled it heads on and still does.

Jardine, where is McGarrity at the moment? Is Philip in good health at the moment? Sad news about the Monsignor and Canon. Do you know the whereabouts of the Paisley sem? He was seen a couple of weeks ago leading vocations prayers online. I know for certain that he is not in Rome at the moment. There are a lot of questions to be answered about his bullying and relationships with other clerics.

Pat, I am glad you are pursuing this. Double standards need to be called out and Silverstream deserve all they get.
Here in Scotland double standards are rife and wondering if anyone can shed light on the following?
1) Is Tartaglia getting an auxiliary and if not when is he going? He is letting the place fall apart.
2) Any update on the cleric that appeared in court not that long ago?
3) Why are Paisley ignoring questions surrounding the gay sem and his antics? He is rumoured to be back on Facebook and acting as promiscuous as ever. He is a bully and needs to be called out.
4) Any update on the relationship between the Glasgow Priest and the Paisley Priest?
5) Is Joe Toal back to good health?

Like

10.08 1. No as he want him to have right of succession, and + Philip is not retiring till at least 2026 and hopes to be Cardinal. 2. Still awaiting court time due to Coronavirus maybe in the New Year. 3. He is suppose to be in Scots College and says it is all just gossip. 4. They are just good friends the canon and the Monsignor. 5. Bishop Toal is still very active but failing eye sight he has got a priest living with him now however Bishop Toal needs an operation on his eyes and should really go private but likely afraid to after Bishop Devines 40K nose

Why does Glenstal think this man has a monastic vocation, but the victim in Silverstream does not.
mmediaAbout a fortnight ago or so he (the boy) was with Father Anselm in the latter’s room in the school. They
had had a certain amount of beer to drink and they were left alone. Father Anselm then embraced him and then
moved off with the boy towards the monastery. When they got to a cloister, they embraced again. The boy
encouraged him at least by not raising any objection and responding. Father Anselm then said, “Come up to my
room in the monastery, I have a double bed there”. When
they got there, Father Anselm locked the door, they both of them took all their clothes off and got into bed
together. Mutual masturbation took place. At about 4 o’clock in the morning the boy woke up, decided to puthis clothes on and go, and did leave Father Anselm asleep. From that time onwards, the boy was not privately with Father Anselm anywhere’.”
He then goes on to say: “I interrogated this boy, meeting him in London for that special purpose.”
And so the letter continues on to a second page, just for completeness and so that it can be seen.
That deals with the second incident, which happened last November, where he was with a party of boys in Dublin at the half-term holiday. They were staying in a private house. For a reason that he is unable to unravel, the Reverend Hurt and a young man slept in the same bed. And he found it hard to believe that a hostess would have made this arrangement of her own accord. In a shortage of accommodation, surely two boys
would have been put together rather than the master in charge of the party. They had not been in bed long when the manner and behaviour of Father Hurt was such that the boy quickly left the bed and slept on the floor.

Paragraph 24 reads like they are scapegoating Benedict ( or at least using him) to protect Purcell and it’s abundantly clear that whatever vile things have been said about Purcell on this blog and in other quarters, they are not lies. The things might be vile but they are not lies.
It’s also interesting that there appears to be so many people willing to share info with this blog : someone is determined to see someone’s head roll

No Abbot Brendan, people are not commenting to “damage Silverstream and the Catholic Church in general”. Dom Dick investigating somewhere where something sexual could have happened was what we were presented with in the beginning. That was rank hypocrisy. When you lie down with dogs you get up with fleas so get yourself a good flea and worm dose in Limerick.

OMG!!! Coffey does indeed come across as a bungling and simpering fool.
He is clearly blaming the whistleblower and, if Silverstream’s reaction to this monk is what he describes, then they are not fit to be termed a religious community. They are like a gather up of spiteful, vicious, vindictive bitches – still obviously under the spell and in the thrall of Mystic Meg (Have I Shown You My Todger Lately) Kirby.
This is completely dysfunctional. Glenstal’s, Silverstream’s and Mt Melleray’s reputations are down the toilet and it’s not because of the whistleblower.
Coffey needs to go and so does Purcell. This is corruption at it most putrid.
“Goodbye Joe, you gotta go” Coffey and the other dramatis personae, in this sordid and twisted tale, must be absolutely beside themselves with fury that these emails have been leaked- because they reveal “Goodbye Joe” and co as cover up merchants who are also dimwits.
Someone needs to go in to those “stables” with a power hose. They’ve all been caught with their knickers down before the whole world and it sure ain’t a pretty sight!

Two other questions spring to concerning not only Glenstal but other monastic schools:
1. Why on earth do any parents entrust their children to a monastic school, after all that has happened in monastic schools? Are they reckless, negligent or thick?
2. Why don’t the secular authorities ban monastic involvement in education, after all that has happened in monastic schools?

1) Yes
2) Because it would cause an influx of rich children into the state system with parents moaning they can’t go beagling.

Pat, having followed this blog for some time and out of my own personal experiences with a wide mix of people, religious communities and small groups, I think you should count your blessings that any vision you may have had of forming a community of ordained individuals hasn’t materialised. Why? I believe you’d eventually have had much grief on your hands. Wherever you find communities of people gathered around dominant personalities, trouble, power struggles and abuse of authority will inevitably occur. The psychological dynamics in any group can be a catalyst for much disharmony, abuse and wrongdoing. I lived in a community for 5 years and they were very challenging years but also very wonderful as the leaders were good. We were constantly reflecting in open and honest ways about our lives as religious. I feel a certain sorrow for all at the centre of these dramas. I hope and pray that the TRUTH will heal all hurts, divisions and conflicts and where necessary that certain individuals will stand aside for the greater good. I also believe that much of what is printed here may be an impediment to true justice, healing and truth.

13Therefore take up the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you will be able to stand your ground, and having done everything, to stand. 14Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness arrayed, 15and with your feet fitted with the readiness of the gospel of peace. 16In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Abbot Brendan cautions Sarah and requests that any statement from Dom Benedict should be brief and he informs her that the media have a habit of editing what is said, sometimes to make it say something else. Hopefully that didn’t happen to Abbot Brendan when he gave Ciara Dwyer of the Sunday Independent an interview last year. Here are some extracts …
“Then I go to the refectory where I have Weetabix, a slice of bread and tea.”
Do you think he had his Weetabix this morning Pat?
“Then I try and go for a 20-minute walk. After that, I come back to my office and turn on my computer. I look at the headlines to see what the news is for the day.”
He got his headline this morning.
“There is the Abbot, and there is also the chapter, which is the group of solemnly professed monks, and the two have to agree. In a funny way, it’s a bit like the American political system, where you have a president and a Congress, and they can each block one another. For things to happen, you have to get the two to agree.”
Pat you should find out who sits on Abbot Brendan’s Council as opposed to the whole Chapter as it would be interesting to know who his chosen advisors are. You wrote to Abbot President, Dom Maksymilian Nawara but were you aware that in late 2018 Abbot Brendan was appointed First Assistant of the Abbot President, so Maksymilian is hardly going to wrap Brendan on the knuckles.
“Aged 18, I went to Maynooth to train for the priesthood. I didn’t have any serious girlfriends, and it didn’t feel like a sacrifice.”

You might also take time in your busy day to explain why monks who lead a life of contemplation and prayer need mobile phones and whatsapp groups? How much is Legal Eagle costing your community? He must be due another lump of raw meat soon? Your ire with Bishop Pat Buckley is misplaced, he did not bareback anyone in the Boilerhouse, nor did he play fast and loose with the finances of Silverstream, nor did he sexually harass a monk of that monastery or indeed anyone, your ire should be directed towards Richard Purcell and Mark Kirby who have. Your behaviour towards the complainant falls far short of that expected of a man in your position, he should be afforded the same protection and courtesy as his abuser. I had seen this as chiefly a sordid tale of an abbot breaking his vows. I was not surprised by it, though. Most of us have come to expect that, and any feelings of shock have been eroded by repeated revelations these past decades.

However, what angers me is that I thought that the way accusers are dealt with had improved for the better. Well, no they have not.

It’s the same old, same old of brazening it out, consulting lawyers (a student canon lawyer in this case, lol), carefully-worded press releases, quibbling about the degree of abuse and criticising the victims choice of words to describe it, shunning and expulsion of the victim, no discussion of how repeat offences might be avoided, and shooting the messenger.

“What sick, dysfunctional places Roscrea, Glenstal and Silverstream have proven to be”.
Exactly. And, I can assure you this is only the tip of the iceberg. However, in fairness, it is important not to conflate the actions of Mark Kirby with the men who came to Silverstream Priory in good faith, because they perceived that they were called to embrace that way of life. I have great sympathy with their plight. In my view, Silverstream Priory must-be suppressed, and those who were present should be provided with every assistance to integrate into communities that would be sympathetic to their vocation. In the United States, Clear Creek Abbey, might-be a possibility — there are also a number of houses in France, that are also possibilities.
Last week, further information was sent to Pat Buckley about happenings in Roscrea during the tenure of Richard Purcell. They will be addressed in due course.
The actions of Abbot Brendan Coffey are utterly indefensible. He has no credibility. It is incomprehensible that he REMAINS the appointee of the Abbot President of the Congregation for the Annunciation as its co-ordinator for safeguarding.
http://www.annuntiatio.org/content/letter-11-2020-en.pdf
In effect, the Abbot President has put the fox in charge of the hen-house.
There are even more questions that can be asked of Abbot Brendan Coffey about Glenstal Abbey, and these do not pertain to Gregory Collins, either. More on that in due course.
Again, if he had any credibility or integrity, Abbot Brendan Coffey would simultaneously resign as safeguarding co-ordinator for the Congregation for the Annunciation and as Abbot of Glenstal. Because, the longer he remains as the abbot, even more damage is going to be done to the reputation of the abbey and its school.

Damage to “reputation”?
Very interesting choice of wording.
Somebody highlights serious safeguarding issues because vulnerable people are being put at risk by an organisation that has set it’s own “reputation” in stone.
And the only thing they moan about is “reputation.”
Madness, truly madness.

After very careful consideration, I decided to leak the e-mails to Pat Buckley. I have a copy of the visitation report and other documentation that it would not be in the interests of anybody to come into the public domain. Pat Buckley can confirm that it was I who gave him the affidavit that appeared on his blog some weeks ago about Gregory Collins.
Because, I have written the past that transparency is good for the church, I decided it was right and proper they were aired on the blog. After all, I felt Pat Buckley deserved the scoop, because he had the courage of his convictions to publish. I have been provided with a lot more information — that is extremely damaging.
Of course, nobody wishes to do harm to the church, however, the on-going inability of those who are appointed to positions of authority in the church to do the right thing is just stunning. Therefore, for the greater good of their own religious communities; the schools they oversee, all this information will be presented to the Department of Education and other regulatory bodies.
So, to avoid even more scandal it would be in the best interests of everybody if Richard Purcell and Brendan Coffey resigned, IMMEDIATELY.

I really am getting bored with this ! There are two things that I have picked up, and which I do not need to be constantly reminded of:
1. Most monasteries, OSB or OCSO, are riddled with misdoing and dysfunction, and some individuals are living parallel, alternative lives which include breaking their vows of chastity on a regular basis. Such is the case with the clerical world in general. We know this.
2. The fact that this is now public knowledge, and many people are upset by it, does not in the slightest mean that there is going to be any action, change, or consequences. The monks, bishops and priests and others involved in this are playing out their usual tactics from their playbook, well rehearsed and well practiced, namely to simply keep quiet and do nothing in the confident expectation that this will all blow over. They know that the mainstream media is bored with things like this, they know that the laity just take it as part of the background noise, and they know that nobody is going to take action against them. It will be back to business as usual in due course.
So, can we just accept 1 and 2 and realise that this blog is flogging a dead horse, and then move on to other more interesting matters ? Please !

More info had emerged from the above, it’s disgusting and quite rightly deeply sick and dysfunctional but it doesn’t excuse the actions of BC. I didn’t realise that he was the safeguarding leader but he is not fit for that purpose alone. Cis he’s had done nothing on Brother anslem and other brother mentioned above. Any parents would be rightly concerned about that as they are paying Glenstal huge streams of income re their sons. Would these parents demand d the removal of Coffey but I get the feeling that parents weren’t told the full and whole truth of it nor were they informed fully (not fully informed implies a cover up on Coffey part) or perhaps ignored nor did they read this blog? Coffey protected Glenstal cis it prevented the collapse of income stream. My question here, did they raise their concerns re coffey as a safeguarding coordinator?I doubt it but I could be wrong there.

Coffey must be removed simple as that if I were a parent. He has form for cover ups. He has form for diversion tactics such as blaming Dom Benedict not fault of his, for poor morale(‘furious’) in silverstream. He blamed on the whistle blower instead of Dom Kirby. So the whistle blower takes the rap and kirby goes back to Silverstream. Its like booting out a rape victim and welcoming back a rapist for the sake of analogy. Also shooting the messenger but not the message itself. That’s the reason that’s hes NOT fit for safeguarding role purposes due to his cover ups, diversion tactics, blaming the whistleblower so forth. Think it should be reported to Glenstal parent Council if there is one or this blog be shown to the contributors (, parents, dept of education et al) to Glenstal school income. Its my money as I have a right to know what’s happening in Glenstal Abbey school re safeguarding re any parents would say.

It’s not a night off on Mondays. The monks have their weekly conference with the abbot and sing Compline in the chapter room at the end of the conference. You must be a guest writing, thinking it’s a night off because no Compline in the church. But not so. There are no nights off in monadtic life.

I think much of the point about Anselm has been missed above. Canon law says that if a candidate has been a novice elsewhere before then the institute must apply to their previous institute for a reference.
In this case what this would mean is Glenstal would be out of their minds not to apply to Downside for a reference because Anselm had been through the noviciate there.
Now surely Downside would have mentioned his spot of bother on the reference. They must have done, mustn’t they?
But then we are talking about the monastery which burned a huge number of its old records of monks to tidy the place up, and that came out at IICSA.
Either Glenstal took him knowing his record of sexual problems (which would have been madness even 30 years ago) or Downside didn’t tell them.

Like

Yes, but isn’t the point that they probably did apply for a reference but that Downside, to protect its own reputation, converted it up. Equally disgraceful.

Abbot Christopher Dillon destroyed something too didn’t he? Brendan is coming under attack on this blog for something he inherited from Christopher.
The “Independent inquiry child sexual abuse” on “Ampleforth and Downside Investigation Report August 2018” was published. See here: https://www.iicsa.org.uk/reports
Abbot Christopher Dillon of Glenstal was in communication with Downside before Anslem joined.
From the report:
“44. In 1994, around 20 years after the ban had been lifted, Hurt went to Glenstal Abbey. Glenstal Abbey is in Ireland and, although it is a Benedictine Monastery, it is not a member of the English Benedictine Congregation. By this stage the abbot of Downside was Charles Fitzgerald-Lombard, who told us that he understood that Anselm Hurt had applied to go there as a ‘lay brother’, having unsuccessfully made the same request of Downside in 1992. Dom Charles Fitzgerald-Lombard told us that when the abbot of Glenstal, Abbot Christopher Dillon, asked him for information about Hurt, he had sent him a copy of Dom Aelred’s letter from January 1970, which reported Hurt to the DES. He also sent some more recent notes dated 14 March 1994, which referred to the ban on employment imposed by the Ministry of Education, although stated he could not find a copy of the ban itself.
45. On 18 March 1994, Abbot Dillon wrote to Abbot Charles and thanked him for ‘digging in the past’. He said ‘[i]t makes painful reading and I shall destroy what is specifically damaging to Anselm, as some recent document from Rome recommends’. Neither Dom Charles nor Dom Richard could remember seeing such a document from Rome, but Dom Charles told us that he presumed it was advice from the Congregation of Religious in Rome. Dom Charles told us that in his view this was appropriate because the document he had sent to Abbot Dillon was a copy. He accepted that by today’s standards, particularly in relation to an original document, such advice would seem unacceptable. Similarly, Dom Richard Yeo told us that it would not be appropriate to recommend the destruction of documents.
46. Two years later, in 1996, Abbot Dillon informed Abbot Charles that the abbey was likely to receive Hurt as a quasi-novice with a view to full membership of its community. Abbot Charles was asked whether he thought this was appropriate and said that ‘for a sinner to repent is always something that we applaud’.
48. On 11 April 2001, Abbot Richard wrote to Abbot Dillon of Glenstal Abbey saying that he had no difficulty with Abbot Dillon’s decision to support Anselm Hurt’s request to be allowed to exercise his priestly ministry. In his evidence to us, however, Dom Richard accepted that it was not right to support Anselm Hurt’s return to the priesthood …

Yes, that is predominantly the case. His handling of the situation Silverstream is lamentable. It will be interesting to see if Coffey’s handling of the situation at Ampleforth led (in part) to the issues that have befallen the current Abbot Cuthbert Madden.

https://www.9sjs.com/news/high-court-claim-an-abuse-of-process/

However, do also bear in mind that Abbot Brendan was seeking an exculpatory statement on behalf of the Abbot of Mount Melleray Abbey, Dom Richard Purcell, who sexual exploits also came to the attention of Pat Buckley about three-months ago.

In light of what had unfolded in his own abbey, with Gregory Collins, Brendan Coffey, should have been asking questions about the allegations against Purcell instead of brushing them under the carpet. It is beyond belief that in this day and age the abbot of a monastery should be seeking statement on behalf of another abbot in another congregation.

Reflect further — if a monk of Glenstal Abbey had been accused of misconduct — would Abbot Richard Purcell the Abbot of Mount Melleray Abbey be seeking a statement that was exculpatory of the Glenstal monk for the benefit of Abbot Brendan?

Any monastic foundation reflects and is characterised by the personality of the founder. Unfortunately, it is the case that the foundation at Silverstream is hopelessly and irreparably compromised by the behaviour of Fr. Mark Kirby. His synchronistic approach was always doomed to fail. Of course, it is deeply regrettable that the men that joined the community with the best of intentions and in good faith now have to endure this madness with its ruinous consequences.
Aspects of Mark Kirby’s background and colourful past were well-known within the church — it has transpired. In recent days, I have received e-mails and information that would indicate that Kirby was not without blemish in the past. What occurred in Silverstream was part of a pattern of behaviour when Kirby was a student in Washington. And, there were other concerns in Arlington/Virginia. Again, none of this would have unfolded if the previous Bishop of Meath had done proper due diligence.
In due course, Silverstream will be suppressed and the property will revert to the Diocese of Meath, who will put on the market and make a tidy sum. This is the harsh and hard reality. Those who are currently members of the community would do well to start looking for alternative communities where they can continue to pursue their vocations with the approbation of the Bishop of Meath and/or dispensations if they wish to return to the lay state.
The current intervention of the Holy See is giving the thin veneer of due process/credibility that the Holy See is “supportive” but in reality — it is setting Silverstream up to fail; I imagine they are hoping (as is the Bishop of Meath) this spectacle will rapidly demise, and the whole thing can be dealt with expeditiously and discreetly.
