SILVERSTREAM – AN UPDATE.

(Including information from a Silverstream inside source)

It will take Silverstream a long time to recover from the KIRBY SCANDAL – if it ever recovers.

As long as Kirby stays in Silverstream his presence will cast a dark shadow over the place.

We were told that Kirby has come back as an ordinary monk with no authority.

Kirby’s ego and neurosis is so big Silverstream never be a healthy place as long as he lingers there.

He can’t be very happy as the founder and former prior living as a good soldier?

And the new prior, Elijah, is not the brightest or strongest button on the shirt and I imagine Old Kirby will be manipulating him and pulling his strings.

Kirby has had a very varied and questionable past and seems to never have come to terms with his homosexuality.

He tells people he had sex with a woman ONCE to prove he was not gay!!!

He always seems to have needed a young man as a “companion”!

Not that Father Benedict has exposed Kirby’s sexual harrassnent of him the world and it’s mother knows that Kirby is dodgy.

And then of course, there is the big drawer of cash in Kirby’s desk, the spending spree and the un-built church.

And, as for Jesus talking to him from the tabernacle?

If Jesus did speak to him he would say: “Stop harrassing my young monks”.

THE VISITORS – PURCELL AND COFFEY.

Purcell

I’m sure abbots Purcell and Coffey wish they had never heard tell of Silverstream and Kirby?

Since the beginning of the visitation Purcell has been exposed as a sexually homosexual abbot and his neck is on the line.

Coffey

Brendan Coffey has been shown to be totally incompetent and his monastery, Glenstal, has been exposed as a disaster zone in so many ways.

The Garda and the Charity Regulator are to report on Silverstream.

Silverstream now has an international reputation for homosexual harassment and financial problems.

Silverstream will not last.

Anon@1:15: God, IF he exists, is certainly NOT good.
If we take the commonly accepted Western concept of a monotheistic God, I have a simple question for you to ponder:
The age of the sentient human species is uncertain, but accepted by scientists as at least 100,000 years+. Why did your alleged god “sit on his hands” for 180,000 years + doing nothing for illness/disaster/famine prone humankind before “shifting himself” to “rescue us” through the really weird idea of a vicarious redemption by “himself” in the form of his son being killed 2000 years ago in a primitive mid Eastern country? Was this the “BEST” he could think of?
As comedian Keith Donnelly used say, “God works in mysterious ways….” or Tommy Cooper’s “Just like that!” The whole charade of belief in God is absurd at every level. You couldn’t make it up!
“God is not great” is the title of a Christopher Hitchens book exposing the whole shibboleth. It’s well worth reading.

“The whole charade of belief in God is absurd at every level.”
Yet many, possibly millions continue to believe in God. They would find your comment equally absurd. Impasse. And I would have to question why you would appear to turn up here to make such a comment or why you feel the need to point out our absurdity.
Christopher Hitchen’s book is excellent and it makes many valuable and true statements and therefore is well worth reading – but it also reads like a list of atrocities perpetrated against people by people who would allege they believe in God; how religious beliefs appear absurd and don’t stand up to scientific scrutiny. It never seriously steps up to the mark and ask examines the conundrum – god is not great yet still millions believe – are they all absurd? Could anyone possibly be that arrogant?
You might not be interested but I’d like to suggest a little book by a German theologian call Gerd Theissen. It’s called A Critical Faith: A Case for Religion. It’s mercifully short and, in my opinion, tries to suggest some reasons why belief in God might not be absurd. It won’t change your mind but it might make you less inclined to call believers absurd.

@6th: It’s the BELIEF in God I find totally absurd, not the believing individuals however numerous they may be. Their numbers prove nothing once one understands powerful external social factors inducing towards “belief.” Childhood indoctrination by authoritive family educational and neighbourhood figures and subsequent social conformity spring to mind externally, while personal emotional and psychological needs figure highly on an individual and personal level.
Like Hitchens, I only ask believers to prove their God exists. Telling me how many believe constitutes no proof whatsoever. The burden of proof lies with the believers, not those who ask for proof. And it is NOT arrogant to ask for proof.
If I may correct my figures above: “Why did God sit on his hands for 98,000 years?”
And I’ll add: why is this alleged God still sitting on his hands while we, his wonderful creation “in his image” endure the personal and worldwide hardships everywhere evident around us? Is it a case that Earth’s starving children will have to just wait, while their grieving parents “offer it up”, for maybe God is far too busy with the occupants of the thousands of planets around the thousands of stars in each of the thousands of galaxies photographed by Hubble telescope?
Thanks for the book recommendation. But seeing it as written by a theologian I have to wonder how authoritive it might be.

@4:12: Now isn’t it wonderfully obtuse to have you criticising me referencing a book when you appear to place all your reliance on the bible, a collection of much disputed manuscripts even whose origins, writers and interpretation are unclear.
At least Hitchin’s authorship and writings are clear, and although sadly now dead, we can still view and hear him easily on YouTube.
Pity your God didn’t wait another 2000 years to convey his mission more easily and convincingly with modern technology.

Traditionalist Catholics like to put an emphasis on vestments, especially lace and to revive rituals that were popular earlier. Here you have a canopy being carried over the monstrance. Although the sacramental presence of the Lord in the Eucharist is not at risk of sun or rain, a canopy is a sign to those for whom it is a sign that reverance is being paid to the sacrament. Similarly the lit lanterns.

So also the shoulder cloth (humeral veil) of the cleric separating his palms from the monstrance is a sign, again to any for whom it is a sign of reverence for the sacrament. Properly untouchable by any but the more sacred hands of clergy.

Devotees of these practices and this spirituality sometimes go so far as to take special care to iron and starch cloths which line the inside of a tabernacle.

We could argue with the underlying theology. But they edify some people.

Like

So the priest needs to use the humeral veil to pick up the monstrance?
But at the same time, both priest and non-ordained can hold the sacred host in their uncovered hands? Where is the logic in this?
—-
The Incarnation is about, among other things, the transcendental and imminence of God, both what we can know by reason and logic (immanence) and what we can know only by revelation and our conscience (transcendence) are reflections of the very being of God.
—-
If you love your fellow neighbour and give them the dignity and worth afforded to them, then you are halfway there: you are living the Gospel. And possibly without even knowing it!
However, if you have a total disregard for your neighbour; then you are not embracing God’s loving plan.
Love is the key; it is the the very essence of the whole of the universe.
Only, some are unwilling to embrace the love; and that is their own choice. We all have free will.
However, they are not entitled to drag others, who have chosen the path of love, down with them.
Only a monster would willingly destroy an other human being to keep up appearances.
But to destroy an innocent person, or animal, for sadistic gratification is truly abominable.

…….the more sacred hands of the clergy…..
Are these the same sort of ‘sacred hands’ that have fondled little boys private parts or have been forced down little ( and some no so little) girls knickers.
Are the the same sort of ‘sacred hands’ which many a clergyman has used to insert into the back passage of other men o the front area of a woman, ocassionally!
I’m sure the monstrance will be very touched indeed !!!

Bella, love, calm yerself: I wasn’t insulting the Sacrament, but the ritual itself.
What does insult the Sacrament are hypocritically unfaithful hearts that make a public show (especially one of such needless extravagance) of sacramental reverence while dishonouring it privately. You do understand this, don’t you? Well, perhaps you don’t, because you cannot : hypocrisy has the effect of inducing spiritual non-self-awareness.

I really don’t know why you Vatican II cultists are having hissy fits about some of the practices of the Trentish folks vis a vis the Sacrament.

Practicality is the operative word. In sunny Italy it was found practical to carry a kind of umbrella to protect the eyes of the priest from the reflection of the sun lest he stumble on those hilly paths.

The humeral veil keeps the sweaty palms of the priest from missing the stem of the monstrance and haply causing it to fall. And so on!

Alas, fanciful meanings were given to such practices by your folks in Northern Europe. That’s why I was always amused by the Anglican Article concerning the lifting up of the Sacrament. Practices it condemned were really not Romish but Frenchified as Edmond Bishop would say. The joke of Northern Catholicism!

Perhaps you V II cultists are really Anglicans.

Seraphim is hinting at real issues but the problem goes back to before Aquinas. The Western churches no longer have Holy Spirit belief.

RCC sacramentology has been up the garden path as cemented by the politician Aquinas (even the Protestants borrowed crucial aspects of it). The latest two facedness around communion means that for others’ consciences’ sake I no longer recognise sacraments, but that’s just me. (There isn’t communion with Christians in certain countries therefore the divorced or annulled are barking up the wrong tree; before JP II made eucharist compulsory there was good company in the congregation for politicians sitting out).

Any religious foundation/community reflects the charism/personality of its founder. In light of Dom Mark Kirby’s history of appalling behaviour over many decades, I am amazed that Silverstream Priory lasted so long. There appears to have been “indiscretions” when he was a student at the Catholic University of America; he was not permitted to enter the Diocese of Richmond, Virginia, and there are other issues that I will not write about on this blog; but these have been independently confirmed to me by people who would not be daily readers of the blog run by Pat Buckley! In any event, Silverstream Priory will be quietly suppressed — it is only a matter of time. It is synchronistic interpretation of Benedictine monasticism is just bizarre.
Increasingly, I find myself more and more in agreement with Pat Buckley, (and our respective views on the world would greatly differ) that Silverstream Priory is the fantasy of an older gay ecclesiastic.
As I have written before, it is important, that the men who joined the community in good faith do not become casualties in this sorry saga. The Bishop of Meath, needs to provide them with letters of recommendation and provide them with EVERY assistance if they wish to join other communities.
For those who are interested, the visitation had the credibility of a canard; the visitation report is a sham. It is even more of a shambles when you consider the matter was brought to the attention of the Holy See. Of course, this is not a reflection of the Holy See, but it is attributable to the lack of integrity evidenced by Abbot Brendan Coffey and Abbot Richard Purcell.
If readers of this blog read the totality of the correspondence — they would be genuinely shocked at what has gone on at Silverstream. They would view with incredulity that somebody like Coffey was ever asked/invited to have any involvement in the visitation. The treatment of the whistle-blower is truly scandalous. Of course, this should not come as a surprise, because it does appear to be the case that in Ireland, we are dealing with the worst ill-effects of the sacralisation of power. And, in the person of Abbot Brendan Coffey we are dealing with the sacralisation of stupidity.
Ultimately, this shambles can be attributed to the previous Bishop of Meath, who did not undertake appropriate due diligence/background checks on Fr. Mark Kirby. That is the harsh and inescapable reality. It is incredible that Mark Kirby was permitted back to Silverstream; he should have been made to remain at a location away from the Priory e.g. Mellifont, where they want to the whistle-blower to be located. Of course, this is pure supposition on my part, I suspect the current superior of Mellifont, Dom Brendan might have been invited to present a negative set of observations on the whistle-blower to undermine his credibility. I have been told that Dom Brendan is a particular trenchant critic of yours truly, because what I have highlighted about Richard Purcell.
I am told that it is noteworthy on other blogs that report on those who have a more traditionalist take on the liturgy that they have remained mainly silent about Silverstream; they do not see it as some “modernist conspiracy” to suppress the so-called “old mass”.
Rest assured, Silverstream Priory is being set-up to fail. The local bishop will relish the opportunity to get his hands on a property (when it is suppressed by a Decree of the Holy See) that is worth a conspicuous sum of money. But, you never know, the Holy See might give the property to another more deserving entity.

Why would you sabotage by your ambiguity your own name as standing for the cause of truth as I have believed? You have occasionally admitted having blocked a few comments on certain inconsistent criteria. Most blog managers frequently announce “I have blocked 10 comments on such & such grounds” so regulars and new readers alike will know the score. Doing so does not weaken but strengthens journalism. Truth and right about others’ lives are not argy bargying to be knocked off cheap (and I know why you rightly wouldn’t block some comments). Because you keep secret from us the e-mail addresses of the slanderers, they are not losing anything. We are your flock and we’ll appreciate guidance you give.

Richard I honestly thought that your Canon Lawyer would inform you the outcome of Silverstream.
It is NOT diocesan property so the bishop cannot sell it just like that and it is the same for most parishes the Dioceses do not own the Churches and the pastoral centres it is each parish and should a parish close then the assets or the debt go to the parish that they are amalgamated with.
As for Silverstream it will be in their constitution what happens to it and if it is not then it will be up to the Holy See not Bishop Tom.
My guess would be the value would be divided to the communities that the current Monks decide to move to.
It is unusual for the dioceses to own the Churches and their assets.
Diocesan levies from each parish and Diocesan investments keeps the administration of Dioceses going.
I would guess Bishop Tom would want rid of it now just like Bishop Noel would like the Oratory Larne back.

Well said @2:08 and @5:48.
In response to someone earlier asking why I bother “coming on here to question the absurdity of religious beliefs ,” may I point out: an atheist is a-theist meaning one not having theist beliefs.
I do not insist nor claim anyone should believe likewise, nor claim to be able to disprove God’s existence. I just don’t believe and invite anyone to provide convincing objective evidence for the validity of their religious beliefs.
It is religionists who claim certain facts as truths and indisputable matters on which our existence and an alleged future life post mortem depends. Moreover many religionists insist that ALL must adhere to their particular version, .(..yes thousands of variants of religion!) . Now that’s what bothers me, why I ask awkward questions, and bytimes ridicule the absurdity of religious beliefs. And really, because of the banal poverty of responses, you religionists deserve all the ridicule going. If some of you spent less time arguing over which cleric is screwing whoever in order to justify your core religious beliefs I might be more impressed.
Meanwhile you can sit on the RCC ‘s Titanic decks and discuss the arrangement of the deckchairs!
