A leading Catholic boarding school at the centre of a child sex abuse scandal has been banned from taking new pupils.

Education Secretary Gavin Williamson yesterday launched enforcement action against Ampleforth College in North Yorkshire.

The school, which charges £36,486 a year for boarders, has been accused of failing to safeguard and ‘promote the welfare of pupils’ and will be prevented from taking new pupils from December 29.

Education Secretary Gavin Williamson yesterday launched enforcement action against Ampleforth College in North Yorkshire.

Ampleforth last night attacked the decision as ‘unjustified’ and said it would appeal.

The Independent Schools Inspectorate visited the school in March 2018 and found a ‘number’ of independent school standards (ISS) were not being met.

Ampleforth College, which boasts alumni including actor Rupert Everett and Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes, submitted an action plan – which was rejected by Mr Williamson.

Ofsted carried out an ’emergency inspection’ in September, which found failings around the ‘welfare, health and safety of pupils’, the safeguarding of boarders and the ‘quality of leadership’.

Eton will hold a review into its practices and culture after a senior teacher was this week found guilty of sexually abusing four boys.

Headmaster Simon Henderson yesterday expressed his ‘unreserved apologies’ to the victims in a letter – and his regret that the culprit had not been caught sooner.

Former teacher Matthew Mowbray is facing jail after he preyed on the boys in their bedrooms at the £42,000-a-year boarding school. Mowbray will be sentenced at a later date.

The enforcement document said ‘the St Laurence Education Trust, the proprietor of Ampleforth College, is required to cease to admit any new students to that school, and this relevant restriction shall apply immediately after the expiration of the 28-day period for making an appeal’.

An accompanying letter said Mr Williamson considered the failings to be ‘very serious’.
It added that the school has ‘shown some willingness to improve and has made some progress since March 2018’ – but said it ‘has been too slow’ and ‘insufficient’.

‘Pervert’, 29, is accused of touching a 13-year-old girl on a Bondi bus and making inappropriate comments in front of shocked commuters

Two weeks ago, Ampleforth was heavily criticised for its response to claims of sexual abuse over a number of years carried out by some of its Benedictine monks.

The Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse highlighted that five individuals – mostly monks – connected to Ampleforth have been convicted or cautioned in relation to offences involving sexual activity with children or pornography.

The report claimed Abbot Timothy Wright, who was in charge of the college from 1997 to 2005, had ‘an immovable attitude to allegations of child sexual abuse’.

A school spokesman said last night: ‘We will be appealing this on the basis that we believe, and have been advised, that it is unjustified and based on incorrect information.’

According to someone in the know on this blog Bishop Farrell is suppose to be getting announced on Tuesday 8th December as next Archbishop of Dublin.
Bishop Tighe is suppose to have said he prefers to continue in Rome and not Dubli.
So looks like second choice for Dublin.

Surely your not wishing for Bishop Alan McGuckian SJ that would take Dublin downhill faster.
The Archbishop of Dublin will most likely come from within the current Bishops so I would still think Bishop Brendan Leahy as front runner.
There is also a Chance of Monsignor McGuiness being an Auxiliary.
Bishop Farrell has only been a Bishop for two tears for Bishop Nulty (7 years)and Bishop Leahy (7 years) would be well disappointed and just hope for the Archdiocese of Tuam

Joe McGuinness is the most cynical priest in the Clogher presbyterate. It is quite an achievement to see off the competition in that most cynical of dioceses. He is yet another desk priest. Dublin has had far too many desk priests with no pastoral bone in their body appointed archbishop, Coddle Martin being the latest example.

there is no such thing as ‘catholic schools’. I have worked in three in recent years and I can assure you that it’s quite shocking. Those who run the schools, operate and teach in them are no more ‘catholic’ than my left foot. My boss in an RE department is pro-abortion, anti church teaching on almost everything. You are so right these so called ‘Catholic Schools’ haven’t existed for years there is no Catholic ethos in any of them. No wonder there are generations who know nothing of their Catholic faith a clear out of these so called R.E. teachers is called for.

rc_2016eire: It is my firm belief that many prominent catholics privately think their “professed religion” is total hogwash, feel unable to let that be publicly known, and for social convention, professional, financial and similar reasons simply go with the flow and pay lip service to the whole religious codology.
And I think that applies especially to many RCC clerics.

With those many achievements I’m sure Robert J. McCambridge has achieved so much more outside of the monastery than he would inside it.
The fact that he is still bitter about being refused means that he is exactly the sort of person who doesn’t have a monastic vocation.

What does Hederman do on a Wednesday evening ? Okay, I probably can guess ! This is what I have learned over the years, that when you have religious people who present themselves as charismatic, energetic, as leaders and inspirers – you will invariably find a flip side, which is sometimes pretty harmless, but too often is dark and damaging. I can think of so many, and I don’t think just of the headline figures like McCarrick and people like that. So, I instinctively distrust those who present themselves like this to me and am circumspect about who they are and what they do. I think of the local evangelical vicar, highly regarded, very successful, planting churches, going off to evangelical conventions, writing books, seen as such a leading figure in his bit of the Church – and all the time, he was acting out inappropriately to his staff, wandering about his house and office in the nude in front of them, doing all sorts of pervy things, and by and large getting away with it. Until after his death when it all came out. We see much worse in places like Ampleforth and in abuse of children. I think the time has come for the Ampleforth community to rediscover a new way of being rather than their historic ministry to the privileged and entitled, although increasingly these are the children of the foreign families – Chinese, Indian, Middle Eastern, Russian etc. who think it’s cool to get an education in the freezing conditions of an English Public School and to learn how to speak with a clipped toff English accent. Ampleforth College should be closed. Ampleforth Monastery should leave the English Congregation – a suspect, incestuous, creation of posh ex-public school boys – and join a more authentic and austere congregation and spend their time in prayer and penance.

Like

I agree. But if they did that the abbey would wind up closing. Buckfast started off in the Cassinese Congregation of the Primitive Observance and joined the English congregation, suffering a conflict between the two approaches ever since. But they will go on because they’re loaded.
Ampleforth without a school might take on more parishes I suppose?

Rich Catholic old Amfordians (or Old Gregorians as they pompously style themselves) send their children to Eton and other non-Catholic public schools with better exam results, higher social status and lower abuse risk. Doesn’t the BBC’s resident Catholic, Edward Stourton, send his children to Eton, which has a full-time Catholic chaplain now?

Actually Old Gregorians or OGs are Downside. Otherwise your point is entirely correct, and I cannot see a future for these places.

If the government has prevented the school from admitting new pupils why doesn’t it send those who are already there home until they sort themselves out?

Like

And there is no spare capacity in fee-paying schools mid-year, who run at capacity to be viable. They would have to find space for 500 Ampleforth pupils overnight.
For the Government it’s a cost-free way to close it because, starved of new pupils/potential victims it’ll soon be unviable and it will close itself.
It will make a lovely hotel, though, as will Glenstal.

I think we should now wait for the Ofsted report on Ampleforth to come out and see what is precisely going on before we rush to judgement.

It’s clear to me that some horrific things have taken place there over the years. It has also been inspected more than almost any school in England over the last five years and had some of the most senior and experienced inspectors sent in there. Though I’ve not inspected Ampleforth myself, I have worked as an inspector with and know some of those who have and it’s clear that there have been issues that keep recurring and at least to begin with, a very distorted mindset which allowed risky ephebophiles to be in the monastery near to pupils based on the belief that it’s safer to keep them under close observation than send them off elsewhere. In 2017/8, some seriously dubious arranhements were in place.

It had sorted itself out with a new senior team eventually and gained a clean bill of health in January 2020 yet I read in one newspaper of two further inspections this year – one by ISI in August 2020 and an emergency one in September 2020 by Ofsted. This is usually triggered by a serious incident. There were also hints of further digging beyond normal inspection protocols in both inspections. This might suggest something further grim happened during lockdown when pupils were studying remotely online. Williamson’s letter indicates some kind of serious backward step in safeguarding. With no pupils in school, it’s hard to see what this might be.

The school is appealing and the new head is no fool. The Ofsted report is not yet available as it is subject to appeal, but the problem is with practical safeguarding procedures (ISSRs 7 & 8) rather than anything with recruitment and deployment of staff as in the past. I think it will be interesting to see this play out, but I might hazard that something has occurred with online grooming during lockdown – an issue which might well emerge later in other schools because as a practising teacher, the whole of the summer term was not closely or easily regulated in the way teaching in a school building can be. Ampleforth may just have had one scandal too many and the Secretary of State may wish to show how … effective he is.

Like

I suppose Ampleforth is under more scrutiny and attracting more Government/ISI/Ofsted attention because of the recent IICSA report.

Bishop Toal comes out of the Despard story smelling of fresh roses and even + Pat would not even take Despard a total nut job and not one Priest in the dioceses would want him.

It would appear that Ampleforth has not managed the transition to lay control as Downside has, though the price at Downside was that the entire monastic community should vacate the premises asap. With reference to the comment at 2:07pm, it would be surprising if the “heart of darkness” of unresolved homosexuality, as defined by Dom Aidan Bellenger at Downside did not also apply to Ampleforth. There are or were similar types at both places. I take no pleasure from the débâcle of either community or school, and there are countless old boys from both institutions who defend them to the hilt. I agree with some other commentators that this is to an extent a tribal thing which has little to do with religion. However, it is a continuing disgrace that Gavin Williamson’s DES – or whatever it is called today – continues to sanction schools with a religious character which teach attitudes to human sexuality which are archaic and degrading – and this equally applies to schools which are incredibly funded by the tax-payer.
