DID FATHER SEAN JONES, KERRY, SIGN A PRE ORDINATION AFFADAVIT?

Sean Jones

My Kerry clerical connections have told me in recent times that the bishop RAY BROWNE, made Sean Jones sign an affidavit before ordaining him.

I’m told that in the affidavit he had to swear that what was being said about him on this blog was untrue.

I’m further informed that there are priests in Kerry who have been assigned to keep a very close watch on everything?

I have never heard before of a priest having to sign a pre ordination affidavit.

RAY BROWNE was obviously covering his “flank”.

Browne

But as me Da used to say: “When you’re used to wearing shoes it’s hard to go in your bare feet”.

Browne is not liked in Kerry. He has the personality a turnip – and that’s been unkind to turnips!

SOME WORDS BY ABBOT CUTHBERT MADDEN OF AMPLEFORTH.

Cuthbert Madden

Seminar: Some insights towards applying the vision of Vatican II into monastic life

I was surprised to be asked to give a paper during the Abbots’ Congress on the question of applying the vision of the Second Vatican Council to monastic life today – but after some consideration I thought that I should at least try! I am not an academic, I am a simple abbot who is trying to understand what is happening in the community committed to his care – so please do not expect a thoroughly researched paper: these are some reflections based in my experience as an abbot for the last eleven years. In these reflections I have tried to explain why I think that the documents of the Magisterium have something to contribute to our search for an appropriate contemporary expression of the monastic instinct.

My abbacy has been marked by two phenomena which I have sought to understand: the sexual abuse of children by monk-priests of the community and the departure from monastic life of men who have been solemnly professed, and in some cases ordained, for ten or more years.

The day after my election in 2005 saw the arrest of the first of two monks who were eventually convicted of the sexual abuse of minors. In the last eleven years other offenders in our community from the past have been uncovered. I have repeatedly returned to two questions: ‘what led to this offending?’ and ‘how was it possible for this behaviour to go unchallenged?’ My hypothesis is that there was something gravely disordered in the communion within our monastic community.

Whilst I expect that some men in the monastic community will leave during the course of their postulancy and noviciate or at the end of their period of temporary vows, I do not expect men to leave in significant numbers after Solemn Vows. At the time of my election nine men in a community of 92 were living away from the community and its works and others have left subsequently: why?

Needless to say, I cannot give a clear answer to the questions I have asked – but asking these questions led me to search for some understanding – and I would like to share the fruits of that search.

Perhaps naively I assumed that the unsettled state of the Church and of the world from the 1960s onwards was to blame for the problems I was seeing in the community. I also noted the increasing size of some communities which returned to the structures and practices of the 1950s. I wondered whether the Second Vatican Council might be part of the problem. But then I started analysing the data in my own community.

I have to tell you that I can now trace the sexual abuse of minors by members of our community back to monks who were professed in the 1920s. I have met with and listened to some of the survivors of abuse who were abused by members of the community in the early 1950s. The sexual abuse of minors in my community is not a post-Vatican II phenomenon.

I have researched the departure of men in Solemn Vows from our community since 1885. Only 5 monks left from Solemn Vows between 1885 and 1940. Then a change occurred and men started leaving after Solemn Vows.My analysis shows that the largest percentage of departures was from monks who made their Solemn Profession in the decade 1951-60. One third of monks making Solemn Profession in this decade eventually left monastic life.My hypothesis is, therefore, that there was something wrong in monastic life in England, perhaps in the West, before the Second Vatican Council. This was a controversial hypothesis in my own community where the 1950s were regarded by many older brethren as the golden years from which we have now fallen away.

In this context it is helpful to read the four volumes of the Congressus Generalis de Statibus Perfectionis (First General Congress of the States of Perfection), which was held in1950. This Congress considering Religious Life describes many of the issues which are by convention associated with the years following the Second Vatican Council. By way of a few examples it describes the intrusion of the world into the cloister and into the cell, the refusal by religious to account for the expenditure of money, and a personalist account of obedience in which the superior has to earn the respect of the monk or nun before obedience to instructions follows.I suggest that the General Congress of 1950 makes it clear that religious life in the Catholic Church was already in ferment in the 1940s: in this respect my own community was simply part of a more widespread picture.

PAT SAYS

It is interesting that Dom Cuthbert says that he has considering

1. The abuse of children by priest monks.

2. The departure of monks with solemn vows.

The day after his election four monks were arrested.

And it’s interesting that he points out the problems of the 1940s and 1950s rather the 1960s.

It is now 78 days, over 11 weeks since Purcelk was reported to his abbot general, Father Imnediate and Phonsie.

They have all taken a SOLENN VOW OF SILENCE AND INACTION.

This is the RCC way.

Jesus wept!

88 replies on “DID FATHER SEAN JONES, KERRY, SIGN A PRE ORDINATION AFFADAVIT?”

Yes 78 days but there will be early retirements and one-way tickets for a few more. The point(s) have been made. A suggestion:- give them a few weeks since nobody will want to be seen to take action because of this blog. The blog could resume its discourse on this topic if nothing meaningful has happened by Christmas? But perhaps a couple of weeks break so the people involved can make decisions. The most important accusation has been diluted. Remember that according to Bishop Buckley the Abbot General of the Cistercians revealed a most important thing to Bishop Buckley. When were the decisions made to send serving priests in parishes abroad who were exposed on this blog? A few weeks after the discussions on here had ceased.

Pat, does that “barebacking” abbot not realise the risks he is taking? He could end up +HIV! It’s not just his own health at stake. It is the real danger also to the health of others.

So I would imagine Bishop Browne to ask the Congregation
These Monks in Solemn Vows should apply for transfers to Dioceses if they have left teh Community and acting as Parish Priests. of Clergy what to do so far in and near King Puck’s ordination.
The Capuchin General has been taking priests out of parishes living alone as they are part of a Community not Dioceses.
Yes nothing will likely not happy till after Christmas and the announcement of the New Archbishop of Dublin and maybe a Bishop for Ferns. too.
Strangely enough Cardinal Marc Ouelett has not met Pope Francis past to Saturdays so maybe no announcements.

I never heard of the monastic as model for “ongoing initiation” for all church members, before. But I know of “movements” that ape the hollow shell that Madden talks about. If only he had been in charge of “formation” in the dioceses, instead of the “lay” power grabbers whom the prominent archdioceses sent in.

I still wonder what it is that Jamison knows about Madden that gives him reason not to reinstate him, given that Madden has been cleared by the police and by a church inquiry. There has to be something. Or does Jamison dislike him so much ?

It sounds right the RCC rot started way before vat 2. It was interesting read re that monk’s VIEW as it may have contributed to vat 2. Heard various stories of abuses in deaf school that had happened in 1930,40 and fifties from elderly deaf adults now deceased. Knew one CBS who belted a deaf boy to death but cbs covered it up by saying that he died from flu or illness. But that happened in 1940’s. He was a v young man with fiery temper. I met him in early 80’s as he was very old and quite stooped. On his external facade, he seemed nice and easy to talk to. But after I left, I heard he felt guilt re belting as he went to church inside dead school and stayed there all day long which repeatedly in the day after. Obviously Vincentian priest along with superior of cbs deaf school wasn’t particularly happy with his full show of himself in the church. They demanded that he stop now but he refused it. He died on that year. He made an unusual request that he be buried in another cemetery few miles from deaf school as he didn’t want to be buried in cemetery for the Deaf at the very edge of school grounds. Cos most cbs were usually buried there. Now I realised he was right cos i heard first hand that one older deaf guy age over 70 who peed on his cbs abuser grave.

How could you possibly ordain a man who needs his contact with people and internet usage supervised??? This is grossly irresponsible. If Browne ordained Jockstrap Jones out of pigheadedness he should be excommunicated himself.

Dangerous thing to sign affidavits. You are cornered. And liable to get caught out. Silly Bishop to believe him anyway. All the Bishop is doing is covering his own arse for when the shit hits the fan, as it inevitably will, so he can say that he was lied to. He should have had the courage to stop Jones in his tracks right there and then, rather than dodging the decision and waiting for it to come back and bite him in the arse. Coward. It’s another form of coverup.

Rest assured the focus on the Mount Melleray Abbey and its current abbot has NEVER gone away. All I am prepared to write at this moment more people have provided significant information.
When certain affidavits are presented to the Father Immediate and to the competent Dicastery, Richard Purcell will either: a) step aside to facilitate an independent investigation; b) resign; and, c) immediately depart from Mount Melleray Abbey and never again wear the habit of a Cistercian monk.
Based on the information that is emerging, if I was a betting man “c” is the most likely scenario.
The enforcement notice issued by the Secretary of State for Education in the UK has been the catalyst for a number of people to get in contact, because they now see that the Irish Department of Education will have no choice but to follow the example of the UK, and order an investigation and take significant enforcement action against Glenstal Abbey School (Coffey) – remember he was seeking exculpatory statement to facilitate a cover-up and the Cistercian College (Purcell) as other information that has been provided to Pat Buckley will be of interest. But, that information has not been made public.

The problem with most priests who are MIA or C/O or absent from the diocese or monastery, is that by and large they are still dependent on their diocese or order for a living, and it is costing these institutions a huge amount of money to support them over many years. If they are truly incapacitated through sickness, then fine. But, if they are able to support themselves through work, then they should be asked to work, not in ministry, but in some other activity. The priesthood or religious life should not be seen as a meal ticket for life. I think a lot of priests / religious do see it as that. In no other work do you get supported for life once you have stopped being productive. I know that there is the difficulty that most priests and religious are not able to build up pension provision or savings when they are in ministry. That does, I accept, complicate things. But the principle should be, if you are on the fringes and unproductive and reliant on support, you should be encouraged and expected to do what everybody else in the world does, and that is to work and look after yourself. I do.

2.28 The Dioceses all wish it was simply but sadly it is not.
Clergy c/o or sabbatical know the rules and they are not stupid as they know it has to go through Canonical Tribunals then appeals to the Congregation of Clergy and it costs the Dioceses a fortune remember the Congregation of Clergy does not do it for free it costs a fortune.
So those naughty clergy hang on and sponge of the Dioceses.
The clean cut ones if they have been convicted in a court than that is easy at the tribunal.
Yes every Bishop in the land wants to look after sick and retired clergy but really do not want the spongers who if any heart should walk away after all it is the peoples money that’s keeping them.

Like

2.28: You make a good observation. However much as I dislike saying I agree with you, the truth is that some clerics found out early in priesthood that the effort to be in ministry was beyond them and opted for sabbaticals, time out, less public ministry roles and some required therapy. I would not mock any of them for seeking or being given support and assistance, financial or otherwise, but after 40 years of doing my level best, I believe Dioceses must change their policies about those who seem to be on permanent sabbaticals etc….and who seem to have the freedom to do nothing, some after 10/15 and more years!!!! I believe too that the culture of priesthood is not always healthy for the well being of priests, especially in these times. We are in a time without leadership or hope-filled, prophetic voices. All this and the pandemic….OMG! Roll on Christmas for a little cheer…

Oh, I’m sure all the recusant squire Catholic families and farmers (well, landowners really) of North Yorks will be grateful for his efforts. I hope Williamson (who is barely better than a 5th former himself) doesn’t give way. It’s about time that the RC Church in E&W and its various institutions came to realise that the day is not far off when they will find the hand of the State directing their affairs, because they haven’t been very good at regulating and directing themselves in the last few decades. The chickens will come home to roost. That will be Vin’s legacy. State / secular / independent / objective oversight and direction. Catholic bishops being told what to do and what not to do. Serves them right. Arrogant pricks that they are.

To be frank I think the reason Abbot Cuthbert isn’t going back may be explained by his words above, which are an unusually honest assessment of the role of a religious community in its own problems. He actually comments about different attitudes within the community and it isn’t socially acceptable to be so honest. Any amount of hand wringing and blaming young people these days are fine but as soon as you start saying the community causes its own problems and then have an unsubstantiated allegation you are a pariah.

Like

I would suggest that the reason Abbot Cuthbert isn’t returning to his monastery, which, is a serious injustice in itself, is because he took the civil action. The Vatican did not like that and this is how it punishes him. Reading between the lines: ‘Anyone else who is considering a civil suit to sort an ecclesiastical problem, think again and be very very careful about what you are doing, or you won’t like it.

The optics are everything. I’ve always thought it is odd sorts of parents who send their sons up to that God forsaken, freezing, isolated North Yorkshire place. People like Army Officers, Judges, Squirearchy, Lesser Establishment etc. Strange. No wonder they all end up buggering each other. It\s so cold and bleak up there they probably feel that they need some warmth and comfort and that’s the only way they know how to get it. That’s the English upper middle and professional classes for you ! I guess the Glenstall crowd are just trying to ape that. With a little Irish veneer.

I have been informed by two (2) priests of the Diocese of Kerry that Sean Jones DID swear affidavit where he affirmed that what was written about him on Pat Buckley’s blog was untrue.

Bishop Browne was advised to delay the ordination, however, because he is obdurate and wanted to prove Buckley wrong — he proceeded. I am told that Bishop Browne felt (the now) Fr. Jones had been “unfairly treated by Buckley”. Astoundingly, the merits of what was posted all over the blog at that time was not given consideration because it was categorically denied by Jones.

Priests of the diocese are open-minded about Jones, because in fairness, he has embraced priestly ministry in the diocese. However, I am told others are less open-minded, because they believe what is written on Buckley’s Blog was accurate. In due course “the decision to ordain Fr. Jones will be one of the biggest disasters of Browne’s lamentable episcopacy”. One priest, I rang told me that “Browne is incapable of making a decision about anything meaningful” but he was surprisingly firm about Jones, and that [Browne’s decision] has created more questions than answers.
