CATHOLIC PRIESTS LIVING WITH HIV.

A Dublin priest recently sent me information about two priests who he says are HIV+ and claims that one may have infected the other in a sauna.

While raising serious questions about those two priests it also raises the larger topic of the number of Catholic priests (and bishops) in Ireland and world wide who are living with HIV.

Not to mention the many priests who died in the past of AIDS.

The very first priest living with HIV was in fact a priest from Larne where I live – Father Jackie White of the Kiltegan Fathers.

I only learned yesterday that Jackie White died last year of old age in London and was buried back here in Larne.

Jackie had a moment of fame in his life in 1983 when he interrupted a Vatican conference on HIV waving a big banner which read: THE CHURCH HAS AIDS.

Jackie was lucky to have lived in the age of the antroviral drugs and died of old age.

Because of these drugs HIV never turns into AIDS for most people. They are not an absolute cure – but they are a “managed cure’.

FROM ABC NEWS

“Jan. 5, 2001 — Like other Roman Catholic priests, Father Roger has taken vows of poverty, obedience and celibacy to stay pure and focused on God.

His parishioners trust Roger, who has known since grade school that he wanted to devote his life to the church.

But he’s afraid if they knew the truth about him he would lose that sacred trust.

“My ministry will not be able to continue if people knew that I was HIV-positive,” says Roger, who is gay and has broken his vows of celibacy.

Father Roger is not the only HIV-positive priest. He estimates that over the course of his ministry, he has known 15 to 20 priests who have contracted HIV through homosexual relations. Many have died.

“I’ve worked with priests who have died with AIDS,” says Richard Sipe, a psychotherapist and former priest, who has spent the last 40 years researching and writing about the sexual habits of Catholic clergy. “I estimated that 750 priests had already died of AIDS,” says Sipe, who has analyzed hundreds of cases of AIDS in the priesthood, and believes that “another 750 priests carry the HIV virus’

Father Roger said that nearly 20 years ago.

I know of one UK ex-seminarian who was HIV positive all his life because his mother had a HIV infected blood transfusion when she was pregnant.
He kept it a secret, but it didn’t stop another seminarian finding out and driving him out of the seminary.

You are right.

I am opposed to abortion on any on all grounds. But did you reckon without the atrocious moral example historically set by Romanist clergy?

The priest in the video I believe represents the essence of the gospel of Christ in helping people in brokenness, suffering, isolation, confusion, those hurt through nasty judgments, harrassment and humiliation, those made feel ashamed, guilty and unwanted because of an illness, those crushed by spurious allegations, those who fail the moral expectations of “perfect” Christians. The facts and statistics are frightening re: HIV and AIDS..but people like this priest help make God very real and undoubtedly gives comfort to hundreds. There will be condemnation of clerics with HIV simply because they are clerics…We don’t need these critics because in truth they are homophobic, nasty and unkund, more un CHRIST LIKE. This minister of God’s love, mercy and kindness is an inspiration. He teaches much about how we MUST treat one another in our failings, failings and illnesses, irrespective of who we are. Pat, I sincerely hooe you do not print information about the priests which you have received. You did say you have to respect their RIGHTS and PRIVACY…you must take the kead from the kibd priest in the video.

Like

Pat you know how you keep saying the next big scandal will be in what used to be called the missions? This might be it given the prevalence of HIV in sub-Saharan Africa. We will then be faced with either dioceses and orders spend their funds on meds or priests dying of AIDS which will show what’s really going on 😋

Like

4 26: You know a little – just about – on the HIV/AIDS realities in sub Saharan Africa…I suppose the priests and church are responsible??? Some of the greatest care given to HIV/AIDS sufferers is given by church agencies. Some Irish religious sisters, Franciscans and Medical Missionaries of Mary have been honoured in their countries of work and by Irish universities and our government for their medical programmes in dealing with HIV/AIDS sufferers. Other missionary orders from around the world are at the forefront of advancing medical resources in fighting this illness. What exactly are you saying??? Go and do some research……this is a virus/illnesd that requires intelligent commentary, not your supercilious rant.

No OP is right. In Christian parts of Africa HIV infection reaches a fifth to a quarter of the population. Extrapolated globally this means black men have a 50% lifetime risk of HIV infection but globally gay men have a 17% lifetime risk. African priests who are sexually active are far more likely to get infected.
@10:58 I think you should apologize.

4:26 am – There is some hidden logic in what you say, but how you have said it is somewhat not very nice.
—-
In different cultures, certainly around the world, people take their faith very seriously.
JPII put out the notion that to use contraceptive- under any circumstances- was to constitute a grave sin; this, undoubtedly, has had a detrimental effect of people’s lives. People have died as a result of hanging on to these frightening words regarding contraception.
—-
No institution has the right to pontificate how, or indeed in what manner, two consenting-adults are to live out their love for one another.
—-
Anybody can give caring advice, for sure; like telling a cousin, who is in his or her 20s and going on holiday for the first time “on their own,” to ‘be sensible and take precautions.’ (Whether they take any notice is another thing lol).
—-
Human sexuality is a of a personal nature; however, respect and care for the other is what makes love truly fulfilling.
Loving relationships should always be open to compromise, putting the other’s needs on a par with your own needs.
Compromise, working together.
Putting up with each other lol.
The words from that song… “All of me loves all of you, all your perfect imperfections… you’re my end and my beginning even when I lose I’m winning!” 😂 x

Because we are imperfect, God loves us all the more. And anyway, He knows we would somewhat be buggered without him… 🙄 x

I have reread my comment and continue to see it as a flat speculation of what will happen next, with no judgement or values attached. Because I think that is what will happen next.
Whether this statement is perceived by readers as not being very nice is another matter and I venture to say that may depend on the willingness of readers to face uncomfortable possibilities.

Celibacy is a nonsense , the root cause of many problems. The human body is designed for physical and social contact , the issue is NOT why this priest has ‘gone’ with another person but why he did not take precautions. The Roman Catholic Church needs to grow up when it comes to sex and likewise birth control. To the modern world these stupid stipulations put Catholicism firmly into the dinosaur category, and , I suspect encourage the general public to vote with their feet..

Barry, Waterford,
Didn’t Father Phonsie Cullinan of Waterford have something to say about vaccination at one stage? More dinosaur moral theology, if memory serves.

Barry at 4:42 am – I live alone with two cats, I could honestly become a hermit and have no issues with this, whatsoever.
The farther away from some people the better!
Yes, you are right, the human body is flesh and does require sustenance and love.
God calls us into His very essence; we are invited to become partakers of the His divine nature- His very essence- love.
For some love means being in a committed relationship, while for others, it could mean something different to this concept.
People have different wants and needs.
However, human and social interaction is necessary for our health and wellbeing.
Our faith also teaches us that love and neighbour are pivotal in our relationship with God; we experience God, Christ, in others.
And… and, if others are fortunate enough; they, too, can experience Christ in us.
(This is why we must always keep oil in our lamps – and we are to share this oil with everyone… 😉 x).

I am much older now and none-active, but I think PrEP (highly effective medicine to prevent getting HIV) has been available for many years now. Of course, the great wee Scottie whores get it for free, but it only costs about £20.00 a month to buy privately. Surely, Bp Pat, you couldn’t be actively gay and not take PrEP?

I have known and worked with at least three Catholic priests living with HIV who are still alive, some of whom are still in active ministry. I would say that they count themselves fortunate to have contracted HIV at a time when various medications were coming on to the market which would prevent their HIV from progressing to Aids. All three have that HIV drawn face and odd distribution of fat over the body that seems to be the hallmark of HIV carriers who are on medication, especially the early medications. I think things have got better over the years with the side effects of medications for treating HIV. All three contracted HIV through sexual contact, there is no doubt. All three led promiscuous lives of cruising lorry parks, lay-bys, saunas and the other places familiar to gay men looking for casual sex. It is the disconnect between their professed lives as priests and their behaviour, linked to society’s reticence about sexual activity, that makes their diagnosis of HIV difficult for them. Whilst people will have an instinct to compassion for these HIV men, I suspect that in so far as they are priests there will be a certain ambiguity about the response of people to them given their priesthood and profession of celibacy / chastity. That’s just the way it is. I don’t think any of these priests has gone public about their condition, I suspect because of what I have just said. Everybody knows they are HIV, but nobody talks about it. A fourth priest I knew a few decades ago, member of a religious order, died of Aids after a long drawn out illness. It was in the days when there was still a lot of misinformation and fear about HIV /Aids. However, I have to say that I was so impressed with the compassionate and loving way in which his religious community cared for him right to the end. I never heard from them one word of judgemental disapproval, but just saw their great love for him. It was not what I expected, knowing them as I did. HIV is such a complicated medical and moral issue for us, because it is not just a disease but also an indicator of behaviours that we still are uneasy with, not just sex, but the promiscuous practice of sex. Until society, and the Church, learns to move away from a judgemental attitude to sex, and stops seeing sex as primarily a moral problem, I don’t think things will change. I would recommend anyone who becomes HIV, especially those who are involved in Church communities, to be very circumspect about whom I told. I would not have confidence in the reaction, especially of so called Christian people.

The word ‘sin’ comes from the Bible directly, correct??
My question to you, can any priest invent a type of sin? For example, we were told that use of sign language was a sin as they used the oral approach (oral method of teaching) in education. We had no knowledge of the Bible just few bits here and there. Catechism was never thought, we were given a book which lists lot of names re sins committed and bring it to confession etc.
Now been dipping in the bible for any mention of sign language as a sin but I found nothing there. So I thought that the Vincentian fathers must have ‘invented’ a sin for using sign language.
Hence my question to you priests, can any priest or bishop or cardinal invent a ‘sin’ for their own purpose or to brainwash us??
Yesterday blog was interesting re 10 yrs old deaf boy but not surprised cos of constant cover ups throughout the past decades when irish rcc ruled the roost in all spheres of life.
Think mc aleese was right re rcc living on a lie.

Like

Dear Deaf Guy,
Is it possible you misunderstood what was being said? It seems incredible that institutions which were set up specifically to educate children who were deaf or hard of hearing would have said that sign language was a sin, and for the reason you mention. Religious orders employed sign language when they were not permitted to speak, in some cases providing legends for the non-initiated.
Incidentally, do you find it appropriate to refer to yourself as ‘Deaf Guy?’ I’m asking because if you didn’t, I would find it inappropriate if someone else were to use it to make reference to someone who was deaf. After all, being deaf or hard of hearing doesn’t define who a person is.

Like

It wasn’t misunderstood cos they told us it was a sin to use sign language. This was a school for deaf boys ran by cbs but chaplaincy was run by Vincentian fathers now discarded. I did check very old dated book leaflet re list of sins as use of sign language was a sin. Its a punishment if we get caught in classes by leather strap.
I used deaf guy in order for others where I was coming from and also as a reference point in this blog rather than anon etc.
I’m human being first as deafness doesn’t define me as a person. It’s quite an invisible disability. In the same way, roman Catholic doesn’t define me cos I’m baptised at birth just mainly as a Christian who have a deep distate for the Vatican. Cardinals, bishops and Pope cos of double standards and sheer hypocrisy on their part. I didn’t want to have anything to do with them except God. I think devil is in the Vatican correct me if I wrong or mistaken

Like

Well Deaf Guy, I am Sorry you had this experience with the Vincentian father as they should be in the Courts for abuse.
No way the Church of today would allow that to happen as you imply man made sins.
In Glasgow Scotland they had St. Vincent’s School for the Deaf and had a Very good name and even the Priest there went on to become a Bishop and Bishop John Mone was highly thought of.
Many parishes have BSL interpreters and you can watch them online.
So you are being a bit unfair to the Full Church because of your experience.

I am stunned at 12.25 and only think that must be in Pope Benedict’s time or before and I am sorry to read about the ex Seminarian. (must have been a horrible Bishop)
The Church today would and does support people with HIV, Drug, Gambling, Alcohol problems and so on as and it continues to develop these areas.
The issue here with HIV clergy is the double standards and really they should leave the Priesthood as they know what they are joining.
Double standard Clergy have NO chance in Canonical procedure and okay it takes a while but their number is up.
Many of our Churches were lit in red on 1st December Worlds Aids day and I know Bishop pat says they are to different issues but most people in our ignorance see HIV and Aids as one.
I must be honest and I am not as pure as white but I have NO time for double standard Clergy and feel guilty when people give their last for collections to subsidise these two faced clergy.

Maintaining the celibacy rule is untenable when the priesthood becomes a gay profession.
With straight priests it was usually a relationship that developed with one woman – a teacher, a parishoner, housekeeper or nun, for example.
Gay priests, on the other hand, will engage in the characteristic gay behaviour of rampant promiscuity, orgies, layby encounters with strangers, and apps and sauna sex. Bishops should realise what they are letting themselves in for with their determination to ordain gay pretty boys.

The reason straight men don’t sleep around so much is because women won’t let them, undergirded by the idea that a woman who sleeps around is a slut. Because women keep it in relatively short supply these straight men are the ones who get it in cottages etc.

The Tribunal would decide and if Priest does not agree he can apply to Rome However the Priest would not be turfed out because of being HIV or ill he would be Kicked out because of breaking his vow of celibacy.
The tribunal just do not have Bishop’s and Priests on then nowadays they have lay people as well.

I see Archbishop Cordileone of San Francisco is sounding off about churches reopening in San FranciscoL
https://www.thetablet.co.uk/news/13638/archbishop-pleads-let-my-people-worship-
Cordileone is one of those culture wars warriors that you find in the USA and in odd corners of our churches in the UK and Ireland – although ours also tend to be of the lace and biretta variety. Anyhow, Cordileone, just before he headed off to San Francisco, is the one who was arrested for driving under the influence taking his dear mother and a young seminarian to dinner one night. You couldn’t make it up, could you ?! Mother there as chaperone, but I bet he was salivating all over the young seminarian non the less ! He’s been all butch, and oh-so-hardline-catholic since he’s been in SF, but is as camp as a fox’s tail most of the time. He likes to do the hardline orthodoxy stuff as often as he can. I don’t think he’s got the slightest interest in the real problems of SF – homelessness, inequality, drug and substance abuse, immigration, unemployment, you name it. Just so long as he’s able to lash the queers every now and again for their sodomite behaviour and quote St Paul. And now he’s playing the Moses card, ‘set my people free’, so that he can get his churches back up and running and bring in the cash. I know a little bit about the church in SF and let me tell you that the gulf between what is really happening in that city and what the church and Cordileone are bothering themselves over is absolutely the width and depth of a canyon. Would you want to be part of Cordileone’s kind of church ? I wouldn’t, and I’m not. Thank God.

Cordileone is a disaster. Universally hated by his priests and laity. There was a well publicised diocesan retreat where he was told in an open forum how much he was disliked and he was nearly in tears on the stage. The Vatican then gave him a liberal Dominican Auxiliary to help ease things and he died a year in. Now things are even worse. Cordileone too young to be sacked, but he will get some rural backwater Archdiocese in the next big chessboard game.

6.18: Were you in SF as a MIA (MISSING IN ACTION) cleric or a long extended sabbatical or does the city queer folk attract your presence?

...Look to your fat, lardy, lazy, indulgent and entitled clerical selves first of all..says:

All of the above, @ 6:18 It was a most interesting time. And all payed for by Holy Mother The Church under the guise of sabbatical and other things. Marvellous. I am so grateful for being a priest and all the opportunities it has afforded me to see different parts of the world and the Church. Mind you, not so different from most clergy, who enjoy the clerical trough, although I frequently observe that many of you – (the straight ones and closeted frustrated queens, that is – which are you @ 6:18 ?) – don’t have much class when it comes to enjoying things. When I enjoy Camembert you lot are eating Galtee. I despair sometimes ! Anyhow, just off now for some lovely hand made tortellini and a few glasses of pinot noir. It’s Saturday night and I must treat myself for the rigours of tomorrow. If celebrating the Sacred Mysteries counts are rigorous, which I know most of you think it is and are exhausted after a Sunday morning Mass, and dying for your G&T or three, lunch cooked by your ‘housekeeper’, a siesta with a quick wank to get you off to sleep, and then an evening lounging in front of the tv watching any old crap. And you think you can make judgement on me ? Look to your fat, lardy, lazy, indulgent and entitled clerical selves first of all.

Father, please !!
What a swipe at the majority of priests in Motherwell.
How could you?

7.03: I suggest you stay off your camembert and vino and cocktails….you are the typical miss whore!! And I suspect you are a self indulgent slut who thinks he’s clever and clean but whose soul is in the gutter. Little do you know about housekeepers: they are non existent, except for a much older clergy. How clean are your knickers, Fr.?

I hope you’ll do an update on Silverstream soon, Bp Pat, I expect they’ve all be offered testing for… well, let’s just say, Covid-19.

7:34, that’s not at fair or accurate. The Silverstream whistleblower spoke only of physical and emotional boundary crossing by Kirby against him, but not about sexual matters regarding other monks. Bishop Pat has a source which speaks of the new prior’s alleged internet porn habit, but again that does not mean that the whole community are sexually active gay men.

Jardine, I thought you be up to speed there is NO way that the Province of Glasgow will be touched so Glasgow, Motherwell and Paisley is safe. ( they are 3 health Dioceses £££)
But yes 8 down to five has to happen so Galloway likely split between Paisley and St. Andrew’s and Edinburgh and therefore the Province of Saint Andrew’s and Edinburgh will go from 5 to 3.
The New Papal Nuncio is doing Wales first then either Scotland or England.
Archbishop Charlie Brown was told to cut Ireland’s Dioceses as well but now it is up to Archbishop Okolo who is useless.

Lol. I can well imagine the amalgamation of Galloway with Glasgow. Can you imagine a Glasgow PP being told he is going to be PP Stranraer or Newton Stewart. I can picture the ensuing ‘chat’ with the Arch.

The thinking was never Glasgow it has too many parishes and squandering money because + will not address the issue but he will need to as he has till 2026 his retirement date unless he goes on ill health
The thinking was Ayrshire into Paisley and Dumfries and Galloway back into St. Andrew’s and Edinburgh as it came from there.
However Bishop Nolan has plans for Religious Priests and Sisters as he has hardly any priests left.
But most of the retirements are planned for 2026/27 unless of ill health.
The two left standing will be Bishop John Keenan and Bishop Brian McGee
As no one knows what Archbishop Cushley is thinking but he is not liking Edinburgh.

Nice to see Jardine and co on from scotch land. I visited 2 of their seminaries in the 90’s when I was considering a vocation with my Scottish friend who was a Deacon. First off Salamanca. Was offered a wank and blow job by a now fairly senior Fr in Glasgow on the first night. I believe that the Rector knew all about his student. The following year we visited Scots College and after a day’s sightseeing, one of the sems asked me to go to bed with him. I refused as I’m straight. The following day he asked me to go to a gay sauna with him and another sem. Just googled and he is still in Ministry as well. I wonder if they continue to be sexually actively 25 years later.

Pat. Did you get my message about Westminster Bishop Hudson and his health condition. He got Hepatitis B when working at the English College in Rome. He even referred to it in his homilies.
He contracted it in Rome as a priest!

Yes I have heard Glasgow chaplaincy treated deaf people well over the years. Ex school mate who emigrated to Glasgow told us as well. Fr Farrell now deceased was v good before he was transferred to Dublin. He’s a good Vincentian priest that I met long ago. Re unfairness I just stating my experience of rcc in school for deaf boys. Just look up at Ryan reports there as it’s all there.
Funny enough Rural parish was way better than Vincentian priests in schools. Even teenage deaf girls complained of on v priest ogling their boobs. That was the same Vincentian priest re his list of sons and he brought out a radio during mass to see if we were deaf or not. His attitude was disgusting but our rural parish priest was streets ahead of him re treatment of person with sensory disabilities.

Thank you DG regarding Deaf School in Glasgow. There were always glowing reports about that school.
Many years ago we had a young married deaf and dumb lady working for us. She was a punch card operator and was very good at it. Occasionally the priest came in to smooth over any communication problems.
Just a pity you were not at that school.
Thanks again.
