PURCELL UPDATE VIA ROBERT HOURIGAN.

Purcell

Dear Pat,

Today, the Rome-based advocate consigned a letter to the Father Immediate of Mount Melleray Abbey, Dom Michael Ryan, OCSO, who is the Abbot of Bolton Abbey, County Kildare.

Ryan

In light of the status of the Father Immediate in the Cistercian tradition — given canonical effect in the Cistercian Constitutions — it is important that the Dom Ryan was formally notified, and given the opportunity to ameliorate the situation at Mount Melleray Abbey, before the matter is brought to a Rome-based Tribunal. In due course, I will have no problem in providing you with the finalised letter, once I receive a copy.

However, I feel it is important that readers of your blog — particularly those who have come forward and given important information are aware their leads are being actioned. Unfortunately, due to the lockdown in Ireland, people were unable to get to see notary publics to swear additional affidavits, and for their identities to be authenticated in order to commence the canonical process in Rome. But, the delay has been a great blessing as more people have come forward and given huge amounts of useful information.

It is important to stress that I have not seen the finalised version, however, having reviewed the first draft — the letter makes clear to Dom Ryan that it is known this is not the first occasion the allegations concerning Purcell have been brought to his personal attention. I suspect because there was no follow-up for some time there was a growing relief that we were not going to pursue the matter in Rome, however, they were gravely mistaken. Of course, this is speculation on my part, but I think it is well-founded speculation.

Within the letter Dom Ryan was apprised that should the allegations be proven before a Dicastery of the Roman Curia — they are so serious that Richard Purcell would face immediate dismissal from the monastic/clerical state. Dom Ryan was further apprised about the choices that faced Gregory Collins (formally of Glenstal Abbey when his activities at Dormition Abbey were brought to the attention of the Holy See) were quite simple: resignation or laicisation.

Collins

He should infer these will also be the options given to Purcell should the matter go to Rome. As was pointed out in the letter to the Abbot General, the Holy See, in light of the fall-out from the McCarrick Rreport, will not tolerate this kind of behaviour.

The very fact that the letter was sent will drive a limited number of your readers, insane. Fortunately, they are a tiny minority, but often it is these individuals that make the most noise. But, they singular fail to appreciate that nobody forced Richard Purcell to go to the Boilerhouse; nobody is forcing Purcell to remain a monk, priest, and the Abbot of Mount Melleray Abbey. He is free to leave the monastery and the obligations of the priesthood at any time. This is a simple truth.

Of course, we will have the nonsense about the Abbot carefully discerning before his God, and the usual intellectually indolent attempts to defend the indefensible. Sadly, these individuals fail to appreciate that if you had told me Purcell had been whoring around with women, I still would bring the matter to Rome to have him removed; because this is a form of behaviour that is wholly unacceptable particular from a Cistercian Abbot. Also, they have no idea about what is contained in the affidavits, and about the information we have received.

Fitzgerald

Within the letter extensive reference is made to the caller who provided you with the information about of the alleged reckless profligacy of Purcell during his tenure at Mount St. Joseph Abbey. As you believe this individual is a priest; his particularly trenchant comments about Eamon Fitzgerald and the election of Purcell as the Abbot of Mount Melleray Abbey are also referenced.

Abbot Ryan was reminded that he needs to formally notify Bishop Alphonsus about the allegations and the bishop needs to remove the priestly faculties of Purcell within the Diocese of Waterford and Lismore; that Purcell should step aside as abbot while he is being investigated and an interim superior appointed.

Phonsie

There was also commentary about the on-going failure of the Abbot General to deal with the situation, and Dom Ryan, needs to involve Abbot of Cîteaux, Dom Olivier Quenardel, because of same.

The letter conveyed our strong desire for this matter to be addressed informally, i.e., the resignation of Purcell as the Abbot of Mount Melleray. However, if Abbot Ryan is smart (and I sincerely hope he is a discerning individual) he should infer and make it clear to Purcell that this matter will escalate, and it would be better if Purcell diffused the situation, voluntarily.

As ever, you have my consent to publish this e-mail on your blog.

Robert

PS: An academic I know in the United States is looking at your blog, because he finds it fascinating from an anthropological perspective how the chthonic (a buzzword I am told in anthropology) realities of Irish religious life are played out on your blog.

The “letter” is not of course from any Vatican authority but from Hourigan’s “Rome based advocate” who chooses to remain anonymous.

The Ofsted emergency report on Ampleforth has been published. It says there are shortcomings in leadership, safeguarding is not embedded and it doesn’t meet minimum standards. It says that despite formal separation, the school defers to the abbey on safeguarding and there are also issues about unaccompanied adults from the abbey (presumably monks) being around the school despite having no business being there.

Bloody arrogant toff idiots ! They have been told consistently for the last number of years to up their game with governance and safeguarding. They haven’t. I think they think that all these requirements are for other people, not for them. They think they are above it all. Well, they have had a shock now, and realise that the regulations, requirements, expectations and laws apply to them too ! Nanny needs to give them a good spanking.

Mr Hourigan’s interest in the sexual lives of other adults may be described as prurience.
Linking this case to the McCarrick case is a fundamental flaw in his approach, since the latter involved allegations of under-age sexual activity, and was dealt with only when these came to light. The geographical proximity of a school is a non-issue. His campaign is as irrational as pursuing teachers who engage in consensual adult sexual activity on the basis of their day job.
To put it mildly, the man could put his time to better use.

LOL.

Its amusing to watch from the sidelines. R. H is the alter ego of Fr P. Buckley as they dovetail each other as if in sync.

Its going to be a very long process as it’s not going happen quickly nor overnight. Both are in entrenched positions.

Did this music teacher “set” the stage for his “exit” plan by tarnishing this young girl’s credibility and reputation?
It is extremely likely this was the case and this was the beginnings of another yet insidious grooming process – a court of law rightfully found this to be the case.
Hopefully, now, this young woman can begin to rebuild her life and confidently move forward in safe knowledge justice has been served x

@9.39am You really are pathetic and do live a sad little life. Have you listened to yourself? You are just a dirty little voyeur turned on by it all, arent you??

Like

@ 10:39 – actually I think @9:39 is posing a very important question. If, as it has been reported, Purcell was having unprotected anal sex in the Boilerhouse gay sauna, then it is would very wise for him to go to a sexual health clinic and have tests done for STDs including HIV. That would be the responsible thing for him to do, both for himself and for other sexual partners that he may have had or will – no doubt – have in the future. It’s a question of personal responsibility. If you are going to engage in risky unprotected sex, then you have a responsibility to ensure that you are not passing on infections, particularly HIV, to your partners. I don’t see that there is anything voyeuristic or dirty about suggesting that. It seems very mature and responsible to me. Which begs the question, perhaps it is you who have the problem ?

Of course, we don’t know all the facts but resignation or laicisation seemed the only two choices in Collins’ case, but not Purcell. Temporary exile at, for example, Egmond Abbey for an extended time for reflection and perpetual prayer would suffice in this sad case.

Once you have had dealings with the church you get used to church speak and can translate it, but just in case some people aren’t fluent:
Vatican statement ‘This isn’t happening’. English: ‘This is happening but we won’t admit it’.
Any cleric of any status: ‘ Your interest is prurient and refusing to drop the matter is harassment’. English: ‘Damnit you’ve caught us out, leave us alone’.
Any cleric ever: ‘There is no evidence that X did Y’. English: We all know X did Y and hopefully there isn’t a condom full of DNA evidence but we’ll keep denying it’.
To the ear trained in church speak the comments today are far more revealing than their authors would wish.

@12.29 p.m. Yes, it is true that you do not know all the facts about Richard Purcell. But, in light of information that was received by Pat Buckley some time ago — laicisation will be the only option open to Richard Purcell. Again, nobody wishes for this to escalate to Rome, it would be better for all concerned for this matter to be dealt with discreetly, locally, and expeditiously.
While the behaviour of Gregory Collins when he was in Rome and Jerusalem was not honourable; he has joined the Anglican Church; he is now serving in the Diocese of Chichester. Gregory Collins an intelligent man with considerable talents, and, I am sure he is well-liked and serves that diocese to the best of his abilities.

No criticism of any clergy for the rest of Advent on here from me. Instead I will pray for them. So glad to see Bishop Keenan of Paisley is presiding over a personal thirty-three day consecration to Jesus through Mary from 9 January to the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, 11 February 2021.
Some brother priests have decided to join him, as well as some schools and families who have signed up.
He will be praying the consecration prayers each evening on his Facebook livestream at 9.00pm if you want to follow, although you can pray the prayers anytime that day. He will make his consecration from the lovely little book: ‘Child Consecration: To Jesus through Mary—Following in the Spirit of St. Thérèse, the Little Flower’.
This follows the consecration of Saint Louise Marie de Montfort but in the spirit of the Little Way of St. Therese of Lisieux so that children and families can join in.
If you would like to purchase a copy of the book just email his Office at curia@rcdop.org.uk and they will send one to you.
In the meantime you can find out more about this consecration from https://childconsecration.com/
Please GOD it will bring everyone many blessings.
Be great if Bishop Pat and followers joined in.
Good on you Bishop John Keenan. God bless.

Yes, I am proud from that I am from the bogs of Kerry. That is where all the best people originate. Exposing institutional hypocrisy for the greater good of the church is in fact a work of compassion and supreme charity. Your shrill utterances are meaningless – what will matter is the finding made by the Tribunal in Rome upon the presentation of the evidence.

The most significant comment today is the one equating laicisation with being smashed into the ground. The priesthood is all there is to these men.

The apologists of the church expect us to believe that things have changed about children’s safeguarding.
This is not true because it is evident that the attitudes which led to the crisis still pertain, here seen in talking about adults. The replies to genuine concerns raised can only be described as abusive.
This attitude is still seen in the Ampleforth case and confirms the only way to change this dangerous cult’s behaviour is to threaten them with the one thing they fear, namely killing their cash cow.

The potted history of Earl Collins, in his own words.

Please let me introduce myself. I’m a native of Belfast, where in addition to studying Orthodox theology I also
learnt to love diversity in the complex world of Northern Ireland. I’ve lived in a variety of countries, including
Greece, Nigeria, Switzerland, Germany, and Italy.

I was a Benedictine monk for 28 years, (the last 5 as Abbot of the German monasteries in Israel), but joined the Church of England last summer. I’ve had wide experience of supporting clergy, giving retreats, and leading quiet days. Before coming to Chichester I spent two years at Westcott House, Cambridge, (as chaplain, acting VP and lecturer in theology) training ordinands (female and male) for ministry. I’m happily putting down roots in my
new parish (St. John’s, Palmeira Square, Hove) and as the new CMD Officer am keen to encourage continuing ministerial development for clergy and licensed lay ministers in the diocese.

In addition to Christian theology, spirituality and Christian mysticism, I’m interested in depth-psychology, which I teach annually for the New York Jung Centre.

Recreation includes jogging, reading poetry, the joy of living near the sea – and buying furniture for the first time in my life!

Not surprised about McGuinness, he is a snake and very little trust is left between him, the Clogher presbyterate and lay faithful. He was Administrator and made a hatchet job of closing down Masses and Churches. The laity and clergy have not forgotten this. The Nuncio has washed his hands over this whole affair and told clergy and laity the matter rests with the Ordinary and not him. In other words, buzz off and don’t bother me. Okolo is as effective as the NI SOS Brandon Lewis.
