MOUNT MELLERARY, SILVERSTREAM AND GLENSTAL UPDATES.

Richard Purcell, the abbot of Mount Mellerary, stands accused of having anal sex with Killaloe priest in the kitchen of Mount Saint Joseph in Roscrea.

He further stands accused of having frequented the Boilerhouse gay sauna in Dublin for recreational gay sex.

He has refused to comment.

He has refused to step aside.

Although, when he was accused initially he ran away and hid in the estate manor house of a friend – and he did not answer calls from his boss, the abbot general.

The case is now being referred to Rome through a Roman canon lawyer and the Irish Paypal Nuncio.

The case us being financially supported by a small group of shocked Irish Catholics.

We await developments.

SILVERSTREAM

Kirby

The Silverstream whistleblower has not had justice and truth.

Hans Kirby is still in Silverstream.

Porn Again Elijah is still in charge.

Another case for Rome?

GLENSTAL

Glenstal is now known internationally as a gay community.

Abbot Coffey is a joke.

Herdeman is still making jam on Wednesday nights.

People are still wondering why Coffey tried to save Purcell’s scalp.

The Gregory Collins story is out there.

Irish monasticism is in a state of chassis.

Nobody is going to do anything about these cases, least of all the people concerned themselves. They will brazen it out and will still be there in 5 years time. However, just like has happened at Ampleforth, one day the dam will be breached, and outside independent and objective authorities will step in and bring them to heel. So, their time is limited. They may feel that they can ride out this particular wave, but each time they do that the closer the end comes. We just need to be patient. They are constructing their own demise. Slowly, but surely.

Hi Pat. This needs more work. The accusation against Richard Purcell is clear. The accusations against Silverstream and Glenstal are not at all clear. Read again what you have written … “porn again Elijah”….. “making jam”… Some simple grown-up sentences are required here.

I don’t see any mention of any of the Catholic bishops being part of this ? Still stuck in their medieval view of the world and humanity. I guess so many of them deny vehemently what they are themselves, and that’s what you see with Catholic bishops and clergy. They know that they are mostly by nature part of that LGBTQI+ community, but are stuck in self-hatred and denial and dysfunction. In compensation they take refuge in dubious moral certitude, and vilify those of us who are honest about who and what we are. We are proud of who we are. Sad people, those hateful, self-loathing clergy. What a sad life they live.

I find it surprising that you are content to tolerate the on-going hypocrisy of those who have made solemn monastic vows. Again, nobody is putting a gun to the head of Richard Purcell forcing him to remain a Cistercian monk, priest, and abbot. He is free to seek a dispensation of his vows at any time.
@04:09
You were checking the blog rather early this morning! Yes, it is true that having sex and/or visiting a sauna is not a criminal offence. However, if you are a monk and priest in solemn vows; it is potentially a delict; one that can get you into lots of hot water (is there a Jacuzzi in the Boilerhouse?). Richard Purcell broke the eleventh commandment; thou shalt not get caught. Consequently, he has only himself to blame.
For those who are interested, a letter has been sent to the Father Immediate of Mount Melleray Abbey, Dom Michael Ryan, OCSO, asking him to directly intervene in the situation. In the Cistercian tradition, the role of the Father Immediate is deeply significant, and his role is reflected in the constitutions of the Cistercians of the Strict Observance. Dom Michael Ryan has been asked to deal with the matter within a certain timeframe.
Should no action be taken; then, extracts of the letter will be given to Pat Buckley to publish on his blog. Thereafter, it will head to Rome to a Tribunal, and Richard Purcell will have to deal with the consequences of that reality. However, he should bear in mind the fate of Gregory Collins.
Mount Melleray Abbey is in receipt of money from public taxation. Thus, it is right and proper that its leadership is held to account. After all, it is a charity (Registered Charity Number: 20003203) with its purpose being the “advancement of religion”. According to the Charities Regulator, in 2019 Mount Melleray Abbey had the following income stream:
From central government or local authorities: € 31,379
From donations: € 241,993
From trading and commercial activities: € 380,697
From other sources: € 218,718
The gross income for the Abbey was €872,787
Its total expenditure was: €1,068,243
The figures for 2018:
From central government or local authorities: € 86,195
From donations: € 292,247
From trading and commercial activities: € 310,423
From other sources: € 272,567
The gross income for the Abbey was €961,432
Its total expenditure was: €1,078,455
The figures for 2017:
From central government or local authorities: € 102,493
From donations: € 227,337
From trading and commercial activities: € 265826
From other sources: € 213,447
The gross income for the Abbey was €809,103
Its total expenditure was: €1,006,971
People are giving conspicuous sums of money in donations to Mount Melleray Abbey. These people who are giving in good faith; they do not expect their money to be funding the lifestyle choices of Richard Purcell.

V interesting re account of monies. I take it that most of the spending goes to farming as its their lifeline for years. New accommodation building for monks back in 2016 or 2017 but I haven’t been to Mt Melleray for ages since 2009 or 2010. What is interesting was the level of donations which seems to be more or less consistent such 200k +. Does Mt Melleray collect other monies from daughter House nearby and other abbeies such as father House to other abbeys re other sources.

Heard long ago that Mt Melleray stopped admitting movies or aspirants. They plan to move back to roscrea in years ahead and consolidated into one body there. I take it that Roscrea is thriving, if I’m open to correction re, 👆. Way back I was thinking of donating it to Mt Melleray but now I had scrapped it due to misbehaviour of monk there and their double lives inconsistent wand incompatible with their vows.

Moving away from today’s lively dialogue, has any reader of the blog seen the report on the Church of England’s handling of a former senior cleric in the Diocese of Durham, Granville Gibson, who has twice been convicted of serious sexual offences and jailed whilst in his 80s. It appears rumour surrounded him and his behaviour for decades but it was covered up to some degree. His clergy file is strangely empty …
Clericalism and the abuse of religion to abuse others, particularly young men, seems common to both the RCC and other religious groups with almost identical patterns of behaviour. For all the at times regrettable language used on here about and towards those who are LGBT+, whether open or not, this man was married with four sons and his late wife was to some degree aware of his grooming behaviour, even if she did not attach the significance to it she should.
The report is worth a read. I’m more and more convinced that no religious body should have independent control of its own safeguarding. There appears to be a wide gap between wonderful sounding policies and earnest statements of intent and the potential for what can happen and be ignored.
If concealment has happened before, it can happen again. It should be the role of government to criminalise such deliberate concealment and regulate safeguarding so that it is much harder to do so in future.

@3:03 pm
Of course, Pat Buckley can speak for himself. However, I find it fascinating that you have failed to recognise that Richard Purcell is free to leave Mount Melleray Abbey at any time; he is free to renounce his monastic vows and the obligations of the clerical state, again at any time; he can embrace marriage to a male partner and/or a female partner; if he so chooses. Celibate chastity is intrinsic to the monastic way of life, so it is not possible to be a monk and married either to a male/female partner. Ireland is now a pluralist society; where it is fashionable to be a member of the LGBT Community. Again, if Richard Purcell chooses to leave Mount Melleray Abbey and lead that lifestyle — good luck to him.
Nobody forced Richard Purcell to make his way to Mount St. Joseph Abbey; nobody forced him to make simple monastic profession; nobody forced him to make solemn monastic profession; nobody forced him to be ordained a deacon; nobody forced him to be ordained a priest; nobody forced him to accept election as the Abbot of Mount St. Joseph Abbey; nobody forced him to accept his election as Abbot of Mount Melleray. All these were free and informed voluntary choices by Richard Purcell.
In the same manner, nobody forced him to have consensual anal sex in the guesthouse at Mount St. Joseph Abbey. Nobody forced him to go to the Boilerhouse in Dublin. Richard Purcell does what he likes with impunity; he is an autonomous individual would all the rights, privileges of an Irish citizen. But, your characterisation is interesting. Nobody is persecuting Richard Purcell; I am just highlighting his hypocrisy.
Moreover, if Richard Purcell wishes to remain a minister in a mainstream Christian church, he should consider becoming a vicar within the Church of England, like Gregory Collins; he could consider joining the Church of Ireland; or if he fancied going further afield, the Episcopalian Church in the United States is always looking for clergy.

You, I do not have the moral or religious authority to adjudicate on any monk’s future or destiny. However, a Holy See-based Tribunal does, and that Tribunal will decide the future of Richard Purcell. Hence, hence your moralising invective is inconsequential as it will have no bearing on the fact-finding and the decision-making of the Tribunal. You can be as offensive as you like towards yours truly; I am a thick-skinned mule from the bogs of Kerry.

As I have written before the fate of Gregory Collins is a salutary reminder of what is coming down the road for Richard; it would be better for everybody — if he did the honourable thing and resigned, forthwith.

The condemnation of this monk by you is well rehearsed. That you want his head on a plate, that you wish such horrible fate upon him is a morally reprehensible position for you to hold. In answer to your question, I refer you to Christ driving from the Temple — the money changers who represent what is systemically negative and parasitic in the Temple, and the church of our own day. It is noteworthy that it occurs in all of the four canonical Gospels.
You are incorrect in your assertion that I want his head on a plate; I want an end to his hypocrisy; if Richard Purcell is feeling the heat, then so be it; he is free to resign and/or choose to co-operate with a canonical investigation conducted in accordance with Canon 1717.
Richard Purcell should have NO fear of stepping aside; if he is without blemish and innocent of the accusations. In fact, he should welcome and relish with open arms the opportunity to vindicate his good name. Are not supportive of an independent investigation of these allegations? One has been requested, but the on-going silence of the Abbot General strengthens the case to bring this matter directly to a Tribunal.
Let us take the heat out of the situation. Let us walk Dom Richard back from the cliff; if you are so keen, why do not you encourage Dom Richard to get in contact with Dom Michael Ryan, the Father Immediate of Mount Melleray Abbey, and have him confirm that wants an immediate investigation into the allegations? What is stopping Dom Richard for making such a request? He is free to do so; why is he being so pusillanimous?
In 2011, the Bishop of Pittsburgh, David Zubik was accused of sexual misconduct. He denied the accusation, however, he IMMEDIATELY stepped aside. An independent investigation followed, it transpired that the person who had accused Bishop Zubik had made a false accusation. Bishop Zubik emerged with his reputation significantly enhanced. Why then, is Richard Purcell so afraid of an investigation? Why does he not make a public denial like Bishop Zubik? The answer is simple, because the accusation is true; it has been admitted to Pat Buckley by the Abbot General of the Cistercians, Dom Eamon Fitzgerald.
As I have written before, I am genuinely saddened by this development. Bringing this matter to Rome is something that a number of us are doing so with the greatest possible reluctance. However, it will be done; but there is still time to avoid the matter escalating.
If you knew even a small percentage of what has been shared about Richard Purcell over the past six weeks or so, you, too, might-be supportive of his dismissal from the clerical state.
