MANY MODERN PRIESTS ARE PURSUING CAREERS AND DONT HAVE REAL VOCATIONS.

Everyday now, ordinary Catholics are sadly telling me about their tyrannical, faithless and prayerless priests.

I am 68 now and I have always seen the priesthood as a vocation, a call from God.

In that sense, it’s not and should not be regarded as a career, profession or job.

When I was ordained at 24 I was clueless about what it was like out there in the clerical world. I thought all priests believed. I thought all priests prayed. And I thought that all priests were 24 hour servants of their parishioners.

That’s what I was taught to believe.

When I was 24 my first parish priest was a tyrant, a hater of the Irish, an alcoholic and a totally disillusioned bully.

The presbytery was a dark, sad, depressing and life destroying place. And I lived there with him and HIS housekeeper and they hated the sight of me.

In my second parish both the parish priest and the housekeeper were alcoholics and sex partners.

I did all the parish work, sobered them up with coffee every morning and did all the cooking and cleaning. Everything was ok until the PP went on holidays and she fell out with me one night in a drunken rage. When he arrived back the PP obviously had to take her side and I took the blame.

My third parish priest was worse than the first and we did not last long.

What I soon discovered was that I was expected to do the wishes of the PP or the bishop – even when it went against God’s will.

One example – one of my PP’s had a rule that all wedding Masses should start on time even if the bride was not present!

The bride was to be ignored when she arrived and be given a quickie wedding when Mass was over!

I refused to process like this. God would not have wanted a young couple treated like that on the most important day of their life.

Would Jesus have done that to the couple at Cana? Of course not!

As a result I was designated disobedient, a trouble maker and a disturbed.

CYNICISM

The cancer of cynicism had invaded many of the priests I met in my early days.

Many of them lived for money, gambling, drinking, sex etc.

They prophesised I would become like them.

THE MONASTERIES

We have seen recently on the blog the state the monasteried are in – Mount Mellerary, Silverstream, Roscrea and Glenstal.

These places used to hot houses of faith and prayer.

Now they are hot houses if homosexuality and God knows what else.

As I say: “If the Cistercians are AT IT, the show is over” !!!

TODAY

Today, most priests are gay – the Boilerhouse, promiscuous types of gay.

Many of them have no real faith.

Many of them don’t pray.

They are materialistic.

They like dressing up in lace and brocade.

They see people at “surgery hours”.

They see the cleric as superior and laity as the lowest form of church life.

They lick episcopal arse with a driveness.

The priesthood is currently in one of the greatest crises it’s even been in.

And it seems no one cares and no one is willing to anything.

We need a new reformation and a new spiritual renewal.

It will not be solved by meetings, reports, mission statements and pastoral plans.

It will be solved when people truly believe again and truly pray.

In fact we probably need to tear the whole thing down and start again from scratch – Jesusc and the New Testament church

I never said I was. But he insisted that he, and all others, should work for his living.

I have always had to go out and work for mine.

No diocesan cheque for £ 2,000 a month.

You mean, of course, that Pat is not like Paul morally and spiritually. How do you know?

Like

Don’t you realise, Pat, that the RCC wanted you to be homeless and destitute, and they are supposed to be the nice people. You’re lucky you weren’t in an earlier century or they would have treated you far worse. The Papal States only pensioned off the Pontifical Executioner when they lost their temporal power in 1870 and responded to the loss of territory by, in the same year, declaring that popes from that point on were infallible.
That’s disproved straightaway by Paul VI’s choice of boyfriend, who was no looker.

Like

Think of all those lovely laity-funded sabbaticals (ie year-long holidays) to Jerusalem, Rome, Australia and LA you’ve missed out on, too, Pat.

Like

Pat, if you step back a little from your repeat articles, you might see things through a clearer, fairer lens. Your readiness to conclusively categorise almost all clerics into some grouping is very offensive, generally of a sub human kind ..drinkers, gamblers, leaderless, sex crackpots…prayerless..All very unkind. We are not perfect human beings on ordination. We have to make daily decisions to stay with the Lord. The changing culture we live in, the scandals, the moral and ethical changes, wider education opportunities and more personal freedoms have affected the definition of priesthood/ministry in and of Jesus. Changes are taking place: they must but not even you, Pat, can offer a reconcilable, transformative, Jesus inspired way forward. You are spending time repeating the humiliations of men already crucified. You do not exactly radiate a spirituality that inspires. Your own daily timetable of prayer and good works might be acceptable to you – but do not judge me or the many other good priests I know by your criteria. That is too low for the majority of us. You seem to enjoy the old trick of feeling great about yourself against the known sins, flaws and failings of others. Sad. I don’t believe Jesus would do that, somehow. I look to HIM ALONE as my guide and not to some auld preachy Bishop in Larne, who is prone to exaggeration.

‘You are spending time repeating the humiliations of men already crucified.’? Say what? You mean men like Purcell and Kirby? Crucified? These men? 😂 You seriously liken their reportedly debauched lives to Jesus’ crucifixion? 🤔
WTF is wrong with you people? You are canonising the evil committed by these parasites. And they are indeed parasites. They have taken wealth from ordinary Catholics under the pretense of their being ‘men of God’, and not content with this, they are taking, too, faith and trust from them: faith and trust in God when the scandal they cause inevitably breaks on a deceived public.
Jesus Christ did not bequeath a priesthood to his followers ; this was a later, and entirely human, development.
Priesthood morally is the Achille’s heel of the Church, and for as long as it remains, it will continue to trouble her.
I remember, as a student in Belfast, overhearing Protestant youths in the back of a bus as they loudly chanted: ‘No priests; no nuns; no Rosary Beads.’ I was offended at the time, but no longer (aside from the mention of Rosary Beads).
Until the Church is divested of every cleric, every religious, these scandals will continue, because priesthood, and religious elitism, were never intended by Jesus; only servanthood. And neither priesthood nor religious life historically have ever embraced this. Quite the contrary, in fact.

Like

You sound very Franciscan with your sense of ‘minority’. “neither priesthood nor religious life” have embraced “servanthood.” … Tell that to the army of tortured and slain martyrs and those who faithfully embraced the ‘white martyrdom’ of holy virginity as well as the holy pastors who prayed. And they never “embraced” this? You need to look at the calendar of saints in the back of the breviary my dear and compare your own embrace to that of theirs.

12:04 am – Hurting children or vulnerable adults in anyway, shape or form is NOT the making of a bad decision or two.
You say: –
“The changing culture we live in, the scandals, the moral and ethical changes…”
Is this not more the reason to resist oppression and the “us” and “them” clericalist mentality which still lingers today?
—-
Misbehaving priests, including alcohol addiction, is bad enough — but add to the mix the abuse of those who cannot defend themselves- the innocent, people who put their trust in our priests- then we have a very serious crisis on our hands.
—-
In addition to the above, the abuse of power in any setting is a great evil, but the abuse of power by those specifically designated to safeguard the most vulnerable is utterly unforgivable — and I for one hold the strong conviction that examples must made to deter others from committing these horrific offences.
—-
Every crisis must be approached with the intention of ensuring those hurt, abused- those cast aside- are given the grace and dignity to heal from their wounds.
I also believe we, as a community, must not be silenced from highlighting others to the dangers which are in our midst.
—-
Knocking back the odd brandy or whisky more than one should is not the same as hurting another human being.
However what it is that makes one turn to drink or other “coping” methods is certainly something which is open for debate here.
Let the debates continue.

Surely the vocation of a priest is to be an ‘alter Christi’, who should be discoverable in or near the parish church, if not out dispensing the Corporal Works of Mercy, with genuine piety and a compassionate love for the People of God, especially the ‘anawim’, the overlooked and liminal treasure of the Church, it’s true wealth.

Like

No, definitely “alter Christus”.

The genitive of “alter” is “alterius”.

Sorry to be pedantic, but the vestiges of a strict Catholic classical education remain …

Celebrating the Corporal Works of Mercy should be priests’ normal response to human misery, a source of self-sacrificing supernatural joy, their ‘raison detre’ , a vocational Charter plain to see, free from smug self-satisfaction and eminence in the eyes of men and chastely in terms of what Kierkegaard described in his little tractatus ‘Purity of Heart’ which he defined as “to will one thing”.

Clericalism is not a state of dress, but rather, a state of mind that gives moral justification to priests who treat people badly. Some of the worst clericalists I’ve ever met adorn themselves with Hawaiian shirts, shorts and sandals, including a cardinal of my acquaintance. They don’t want to be identifiable as priests in the marketplace or public square but enjoy the secret of their priesthood to be known only to their parishioners. Imagine the terrible inconvenience of being stopped in the street by a complete stranger, interrupting one’s sacred quotidian tasks and pleading “Father can you help me?” What a terrible inconvenience! Archdeacon Byrne of Down & Connor happy memory was known to take his boots off at the front door of the presbytery and give them to ‘a man of the road’.

Like

Ah. Mention of old Archdeacon Joe Byrne of happy memory. Now that was a priest in the image of Christ. Kind, patient and a man of great ( and silent) charity.
He is still held in great esteem by those of us of a certain vintage in the D&C presbyterate.
In fact when I started out my first PP told me it should be the aim of all young priests to emulate Joe Byrne. He was a walking saint.
He actually ended up PP of Larne but long before your time Pat.

I heard Pell on the radio this morning. He didn’t do himself, or us, any favours. Arrogant, unrepentant, bombastic, certain….. You would have thought that he could just shut up and stop pissing people off with his unbending, inflexible bashing. He and his interventions are exactly what we do not need. He has an inability to see that he, and the Church, could, just possibly could, have got it wrong and what he and the Church has stood by so trenchantly might just need changing. In the same programme, McAleese made that point about the Church needing to look at itself and have a rethink about the grave injustices it still inflict on people, especially those of difference such as the LGBTQI+ community. Pell’s Church is not a Church that i want to belong to anymore. I’m already looking elsewhere. You lose me, you lose lots like me, but nobody seems to care in their arrogant certitude. F**k Pell and those like him that think that the Church is only theirs.

Like

Good riddance. Better to have a small Church of committed believers than a large Church of moaning de facto Protestants.

Like

I heard the interview too. His unbending certainty struck me; but I was more struck by his lack of compassion for others. Any expression of compassion really had to be drawn out of him and failed to convince me that it was genuine. For many, suffering makes them more compassionate and understanding of others. With Pell, that seems not to have occurred. Rather his imprisonment and subsequent acquittal appear to have justified, in his mind, everything he has done in his life. That seminary training should have prepared him for prison is hardly a good advert for pre-Vatican II formation. Rather, it might suggest a heart hardened by brutality rather than open to the love of Christ and making that love manifest in the world. As we approach Christmas, I’m saddened to have heard the cardinal’s interview; even his lack of bitterness came across as a political rather than spiritual gesture.

But it is certainly not the case now, when the reputation of priests is lower than a snake’s belly and when parents pull their children closer to themselves for the child’s protection when near a priest.

It must be hard for priests leaving ministry to have priesthood as their CV. Employers are not going to be queueing up. Maybe that’s why unbelieving and Boilerhouse frequenting priests hang on, for fear of perpetual unemployment.

At 10.40, ‘vocations’? What? To a priesthood Jesus never intended, and which is showing its true nature almost daily now?

Sexual deviancy, child abuse, financial fraud, etc. How on earth could God vocate anyone to this moral cesspool, and to an institution ‘corrupt, and riddled with corruption’?

The flight of fancy that Roman Catholic priests have a vocation is another instance of the elitism, exceptionalism, and gift-to-the-Church mentality enjoyed by priests.

Everyone else has a job, but priests have a calling. Rubbish! Jesus is ashamed of you all. You’re as godly as the Pharisees, who rejected Christ, just as priests, their natural successors, have rejected him.

Away with the lot of you. You are worse than utterly useless.

Someone must draw attention to their flawless behaviour, even if it should mean grinding into the dust of adverse publicity stubborn fools like Purcell.

Actually not one of them has a genuine ‘vocation’ from God, because when you consider dispassionately what God is none of his attributes are reflected in the cult they serve and if they heard the call of the God they claim to serve it would be be to get out of there.

@ 5:03 am ‘alter Christi’? anawim? liminal treasure?
I would be interested in knowing what you are doing to be another Christ.. How have you been getting your hands dirty lately with God’s poor ones?
I’d hazzard a guess and say you are either an indolent cleric, living at the expense of the parishioner you sponge off or someone who sponges of the state and therefore has lots of time to have your nose stuck is some dense theological tome which gives you all the right terminology but does little in the way simple Christian, works of charity.
Just some random thoughts…..
I want my priests to be men or women who get their hands dirty – who know what it means to have to pay for mortgage/ rent, electricity and food etc. That way they will know the hardships and concerns faced by their parishioners.
I want them to be married or in relationships so that they understand the difficulties of family life , raising children, deciding if they can afford more children etc That way they will know ……
My local parish priest has a notice on his door advising of the times I can and cannot call. if he had a genuine 9 -5 job I’d be inclined to respect such a timetable.
I believe priests are entitled to time that is theirs for rest and recreation – but priesthood is not a 9 to 5 job and those who don’t have an ‘open door policy’ should ask themselves if they really are ‘another Christ’. I don’t recall any Gospel stories where the poor or afflicted had to make an appointment before Jesus would help them.

Like

What an honest account of a clerical life, but even here one can hear small treads of Irish self deception showing through. For instance, you never ask yourself whether your ‘vocation’ was from God, or from your own youthful human understanding that arose out of the structure of the Irish family life with its intense macho orientation. And that that was partly the result of Church teaching and republican ideology with an ethics of violence and social control at its heart. Let me suggest the real distinction between the clerical ‘vocation’ and the secular career priest for whom the ‘sacred’ rituals where only the money making tools for a good life was all. Tell me which it was and how you distinguish the one from the other.
You were probably a bit like John McGahern, the writer, a ‘Mammy’s boy’, that is you loved your mother more that you were impressed by the ‘physical force orientation of your father; in short, you didn’t play with the ‘rough boys’ and their manly Gaelic Games and their 1916 stuff. And even though there was huge kudos in their secular world of parish and county rivalry, you were afraid, like many of us to join in that horse play..Getting a belt on the side of the head with a hurley and coming home with a trickle of blood running from out of one’s childish curls to mingle with the playing field mud on the side of ones face, to show that you were a ‘little man’ and not a ‘Mammy’s boy’ or a ‘big sissy’ was too much. In Ireland, as in Catholic teaching. the wound was everything. ‘Unless I can put my fingers into the wound I will not believe’! The Church was the spiritual wing of the Irish physical-force men..
Your mother, being a pius woman, realised that there were three genders in Irish life: her put-upon female gender, who had no role anywhere inside the altar rails; the macho males, which she both dreaded as she probably married on, kneeling at the back of the church on one knee, whose she was told by the nuns in the convent that she was put on earth to service, day and especially in the night. And she clasped her sissy boy ever closer to her breast, the only person that understood her, while he longed to do more for her. And when the priest came round to his school and asked his class, ‘which of you boys think you have a ‘vocation’ to do God’s work and release the dead souls from from purgatory, one of the Afterlands, and at that moment in your innocence you suddenly believed that the dead were not really dead at all, and if your mother was among them you could release her to heavenly bliss, into another Afterland. That was the least you could do for this woman who shielded you from the rough boys and the Irish authority figures – one should also add the poor boys who could never afford the seminary fees and would eventually be forced to emigrate, and the priests would help Ireland to forget them by telling people that they did not deserve to be memorialised as they were left because of their desire for the fleshpots of England.
So your hand shot up in answer to the priest’s question. And you were not doing it out of any personal, selfish human motive: No. You were doing it because God called you. Yes, God! God was now objective and real in your little heart, as real as and the third Irish gender that was made flesh. Was not Jesus a ‘Mammy’s boy’ also. Did he not die for his mother even though we are assured that she was a human. Though you never could understand how that works. None of the priests you knew would die for anybody in your parish. How could God the Son, who had no proper divine mother in the all-male Trinity of creation. But the great thing was that ‘Mammy’boys’ were not mocked by other GAA types, who themselves had become ‘physical force’ merchants obsessed with the memorialisation of violence, as they willingly recognised them as ‘boys with a Godly vocation’.
No wonder English Catholic priests were disrespectful to you in Wales because they were already free of the illusion of godly ‘vocation’ worshipers. They were realists, and did all the things that compensated them for this lonely life celibate life they broadcast, They drank and took their housekeeper into bed with them at night, and kept a supply of durex nearby and one ex told me for ‘Just in Casey’. My father-in-law, a Lancashire Catholic convert doctor, told me that whenever he visited a sick priest, he was not surprised to see the house keeper’s slippers under the bed among the empty whiskey bottles. But when homosexuality was decriminalised in British law, it was natural that the Catholic priesthood should become a vast gay boiler house as both sides of the relationship had a reason to keep quiet – and it was better than the practice of buggering children that previous brought relief. This is why I support you publicly ‘outing’ their activity; I support your ordination of women, for the future of the Church (in-so-far as it had a future)is as a feminised Church. The caring sex, will then be voicing what they believe and saw as their role; but I disagree with your condemnation of the profligacy of these gays with dozens of partner for that goes with what gayness is. Of course, those homosexual seminary professors who rape innocent students should not be tolerated any more than we accept the rape of women. The future is bleak for the church unless the future becomes female where the carers in society are given control of the Ideology of care. It has to be taken out of the hands of the Macho corner boys with their vulgar jeers on this site that would embarrass anyone with a grain of decency. That is the valediction of the departing, shrinking minority. No loss.

It was difficult listening to Pell’s macho Catholicism, hard, unbending, unforgiving, unyielding – I could go on ! Maybe that was what was needed at one time many decades ago, maybe that’s what being a priest in frontier and outback Australia meant at one point. But those times are long gone. That’s not the kind of priest and leader we need. I’d have preferred some humility, some self-awareness, some compassion for victims and less of the subliminal bashing people over the head all the time. He jumped on the interviewer once or twice, who deftly avoided an out and out conflict with him. I guess Pell would have loved that so that he could leave a few bodies by the side of the road.
