B. His role on behalf of CORI in “TOWARD HEALING” is very troubling. He has no qualifications whatsoever.

One of their stated aims is to provide retreats / spiritual direction for adults who experienced abuse. That is for adults who may be very vulnerable in a church controlled residential setting such as a guest house.

Please highlight this risk as CORI’s credibility is at stake.

3. The Cistercian Generalate is suppressing / closing monasteries world wide at speed.

The assets of the Irish houses could all come under the “fraternal care” of this young abbot.

4. Towards Healing appears to have very close links with current and ex staff of St Luke’s which has worked with offending clerics for many years.

Why does Fr Hugh Lagan SMA not list his employment with St Luke’s on the Towards Healing website as he is a director of this CORI organisation. Conflict of interest?

He also runs a road show for CORI for novices and junior religious in sexuality and abuse issues.

He spouts the St Luke’s expertise and was trained in psychology at Boston College for St. Luke’s.

5. Your favourite clerical psychologist David Marsden, who traded on his Gregorian University Licence in psychology, is now completing his doctorate in Rome, advertising himself as being employed as a psychologist in Maynooth and a UK seminary, prior to his current studies.

He was not a psychologist in Maynooth but a Vocation Growth Counsellor and no more.

He is very linked with the THEOLOGY OF THE BODY gang in the USA.

In the summer he gave a virtual conference on “THE VIRGIN MARY AND MARILYN MUNROE” in which he explained that one was an abused addict and the other the most beautiful woman in history.

Yes, he is, but unfortunately he represents a lobby which wields considerable influence not only in seminaries, but also in Catholic schools and universities. When was the last time anyone took a hard look at what is being taught in Catholic schools under the guise of Religious or Moral and Pastoral Education? It is surely noteworthy that an expert in such matters has recently been convicted of the usual stuff. Was he convinced of the Theology of the Body when degrading teenage boys?

I’m taking it that Quigley is in prison after having been found guilty, and now awaiting a sentencing date ? Or has he been sentenced ? Whatever, I suspect that he will be getting or has got a long sentence for what he did, especially given the extra dimensions of imprisoning and sadism in his crimes. And, I’m sure that what came to court was only a small selection of what he was up to over the years. I know there are questions about timeline and on whose watch he was reintroduced to having contact with schools and children after his “sojourn” in the USA. I think the focus is on + Nichols and his VG of the time (who he ?). A wider question is, how did all that go on without anybody having any knowledge or suspicion at all in the Archdiocese of Birmingham ? Surely somebody’s antennae must have been twitching ? I often think that in the case of clergy, there are other clergy who do have some idea of what is going on, but for all sorts of reasons just won’t do anything about it. Clerical loyalty ? Fear ? Carelessness ? Misguided sense of human sinfulness and weakness ? Whatever, the end result is that because of any or all of that, young kids were being grievously abused and marked and harmed for life. They really should, those clergy and others, hang their heads in shame.

There is a recurring theme in so many matters you post about here – amateurism.
Outside of the church the days of keen amateurism are long gone, and the fact the church continues to muddle through shows it hasn’t learned anything from the scandals of the past 30+ years.
A sensible organisation would hire outside psychologists, accountants, etc and thereby gain more credibility.

MESSAGE FROM ARCHBISHOP DIARMUID MARTIN
29 December 2020
Later this morning the Holy See will announce that Pope Francis has accepted my resignation as Archbishop of Dublin that I had presented at the beginning of this year. The Pope will also announce the name of my successor.
As I take leave of my ministry, I wish to thank all those who have sustained and encouraged me in my mission as Archbishop. I was genuinely moved over these past few weeks at the large number of people who have affectionately written to thank me and to wish me well at this new stage in my life and ministry. I thank them.
At the same time, I am aware of those who may feel that I have let them down or who have been offended by something I said or did or did not do. I ask their pardon.
I have given sixteen years of my life to this ministry as Archbishop of Dublin. I will never forget the faith and the generosity the commitment of the clergy and people of this diocese. Your faith has encouraged me.
The Church in Dublin is a very different one today than it was sixteen years ago. Parishes have become more vibrant than at any time in their history. We were the first diocese to introduce the permanent diaconate. We introduced parish pastoral workers. Families and schools have shown great commitment in transmitting faith in Jesus Christ to their children. Lay women and men have willingly taken on responsibility in parish life.
I remember the annual Holy Thursday Chrism Masses. They were always an occasion in which we saw the sincere commitment of priests to renewal in their ministry. I remember the close cooperation with the Diocesan Council of Priests on a wide exchange of pastoral reflection and proposals. Only once in those sixteen years was I unable to attend a meeting.
I remember the priests that I had the privilege to ordain. It may seem strange to say but I remember in a special way the funerals of priests. They were occasions at which the affection of people for their priest became manifest and they were occasions that made me recall what the call to priesthood means. In this context, I commend to your prayers the late Monsignor Tom Stack a priest of extraordinary qualities who died in these days.
I remember the events in the RDS at the Eucharistic Congress and the World Meting of Families. They were occasions in which we realised that there are great things happening in the Irish Church, especially with the participation of religious and missionary societies.
I remember the difficult past year with lockdowns and restrictions on our ministry. I think of those who died, of the bereaved, of the sick and of those who lost their livelihood. Our parishes faced challenges but were far from being undaunted.
I remember the hurt experienced by survivors of sexual abuse. My meetings with them were harrowing but I never came away from them without learning something of how survivors have to cope with their horrific experiences until the present. I thank the Child Safeguarding and Protection Service of the Diocese for the way it changed the culture of the diocese. I thank the lay people in every parish who work in this area. I thank the survivors who contributed to our response at a time when they had every reason to abandon us.
I thank those who worked closely with me personally in Archbishops House and in the diocesan administration. I enjoyed good relations of cooperation with leaders in public life, the city authorities, and the world of education. The Church must be present constructively in society. I was blessed with the friendship of two Church of Ireland Archbishops, John Neil and Michael Jackson, as well as leaders of other Christian Churches, the Islamic Community and both Jewish communities.
In my life, I had the remarkable experience over thirty years of working for the Holy See in international life. It was a privilege to know and serve four Popes. The greatest honour, however, was of course to be called to be Archbishop of the city and the diocese where I was born and grew up. I am and have always been a proud Dubliner.
The name of my successor will be announced later this morning. In the period until he can be fully installed as Archbishop, Pope Francis has appointed me as Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Dublin with all the rights, faculties and duties of a diocesan bishop.
I know that my successor will receive the full support of the priests and people of this Diocese. I wish him well and pray the Lord that the Lord will bless him with good health and strong pastoral vision to lead the Catholic community in what will be challenging times.
Finally, I ask you to keep me in your affection and in your prayers.

I’ve always liked +Diarmuid, but have to react to his claim that Dublin parishes are more vibrant today than ever or that great things are happening in the Irish Church. The only bishop who ever had the courage to tell it as it is was Archbishop Lefebvre – and I’m not by the way a supporter of the SSPX. The Church in Western Europe is in melt-down. It is not for me to comment further on the Irish Church, but, God knows, there has been plenty posted on this blog to refute +Diarmuid’s wishful thinking. As for England, we have Downside soon to be without a monastery, Ampleforth probably without a school, Upholland and Ushaw gone and now Wonersh, distinguished convents such as Stanbrook and Colwich either closing, merging or relocating to some kind of retirement home for a few old biddies left. Does Scotland even have a seminary? I was amused by the way to see that The Tablet last week illustrated an article on the crisis in the French Church with a photograph of St Nicholas du Chardonnet. Pause for thought: that particular church is always packed.

If he’s serious about his business, why is he not studying for a doctorate at some serious secular university in the UK / Ireland / USA ? That would inspire more confidence. I did a variety of degrees in Rome at the Gregorian and the Biblicum and let me tell you that compared to degrees I did back home, those Roman degrees are not worth the paper they are written on. Fr David Marsden’s reputation goes before him, and I doubt if he will ever get a job with seminarians in Ireland or the UK ever again, except with some nut job traditionalist seminary where they worry about masturbation and wet dreams as the defining criteria for suitability for ministry.

A very crap and badly managed announcement in Dublin though. Not well thought through. And odd optics and sounds. Why there and not the Pro-Cathedral ? Why in a Salesian (I think) parish and not a diocesan run parish ? Why Dermot begging up the Salesians and their mass attendance ? It rather seems to me that it was a final dismissive, disdainful fingers up to the secular clergy of Dublin, who don’t really like Dermot, and he doesn’t really like them. A very odd performance altogether !

Archbishop Elect Farrell picked the parishes as Pope Francis was in it.
Parishes belong to the Archdioceses and Religious Orders are the Administrators of them.
Archbishop Martin tried his best with some nasty clergy over 75 who would not retire as some Bishops and clergy think they are not replaceable.
You see it all of the Church Archbishops, Bishop and Clergy who are not either fit in health for the job or just shocking pen pushers.

Very true; also of Heenan at Westminster. You have to go back at least to the early seventies to find any decent bishops; even then they were retiring or dying off. Nichols has been dreadful at Westminster, despite early high hopes, but who the hell is there to succeed him? All the usual names mentioned would be equally useless.

As to whom would succeed him, well, there are a few who would like to: the one across the Thames, Wilson, the bruiser who is sorting out Southwark; Stock of Leeds, competent, careful, but boring; the Gaulieter from Salford, Arnold; and sweetie pie Longley from Birmingham, who probably would rather be left alone. Never mind whom it might be, the main thing is that Nichols needs to go first and leave a clear field. At the moment he’s hanging on because he says the Pope wants him to, but the Pope didn’t know about the IICSA lashing Nichols was going to get when he told him to stay on. Now he’s got to wait a while until he can act on that, but in due course I think Francis will move Nichols on when diplomatically convenient. I’d actually say that quietly they are furious with Nichols for what happened at IICSA. Nichols, bless him, doesn’t get the mismatch in timings and events and thinks that he’s still the bee’s knees.

Dermott Farrell asked the Vatican to be able to finish up his appointment in Ossory which shows the level of the man; this is what held up his appointment. He is a kind, prayerful pastoral. His appointment will only be for short period. The Vatican did not want another Eamon Martin who is young, immature and inexperienced.

There is a word premortem. However, it’s a noun and a noun would be incongruous at that point in your sentence.

Eamonn Martin needs to get his speed up because Dublin maybe the place of Ireland’s next Cardinal.

The way I view it was that the Vatican itself is a kind of business conglomerate with many octopuses branches all over the world. They have its own laws such as Canon law akin to company law. It’s business to make money, otherwise, it won’t survive. They needed money to run it as they have billions in their bank account. Maradona once asked Pope Francis to sell off EXTRAVAGANT art works and artefacts pieces inside the Vatican but PF demurred.

Agree with you re dioceses as they needed to be dissolved into one big diocese. Less bishops as well cos we have far too many bishops here.

Okolo nuncio as I know just few bits here and there, he was baptised by an Irish priest in Africa as he went to primary school ran by an Irish nun. That’s all I know here nothing more or less. He as a nuncio even visited the grave of sma priest who baptised him.

You’ll find dioceses in Ireland are registered as both Ltd and charities. Which is used on any given occasion depends on the legal protection sought.
Dermot is 100% a company man. I have met him on many an occasion… like John Buckley, Dermot will do rounds of hospitals because it looks good; but he would stand on your throat to protect the church. A skilled politician, Dublin’s Bishop’s Palace best have a space big enough for an Audi, and a dinner table that is comfortable with meaningless conversation.

There is a huge disconnect between bishops and the laity. Laity aren’t emanoured with the news re Dublin new Bishop. Cos they are a cover up merchants nothing more or less. Trust is gone in the people of Ireland. They do it in their own way now. Bishops aren’t seen as honest brokers since abuse scandals broke through and also huge incalculable damage that Casey and clearly did re double standards of their lives. The dam has broken or breached a little before that., now is deluge.
Church militant did more a lot more damage to romanist Church than this blog. Fair play to church militant but this blog enable us as a laity to see the other side of rcc which was more interesting and useful insights cos laity are blind and unquestionably attack me if I spoil it. I think the fuller significance to today’s appointment in Dublin has been missed by some of those posting thus far. Dermot Farrell was the first Irish bishop appointed under the current Nuncio after the 5 years of the inexperienced Charlie Brown several of whose recommendations looked odd at the time. Even more so now.

The current Nuncio is likely to turn in the future to those he advanced to the episcopate – Router, Duignan, Dempsey – rather than the ‘misfits’ such as Phonsie, Francis Duffy or Ray Browne. Duignan will be the next Archbishop of Tuam and Router the next Bishop of Down and Connor.

As a lay man, I ask what has any of these new Bishops done, absolutely nothing substantial to be deserving of a promotion, they are company men. Phonsie is viewed by people as a risk taker in a missionary sense and has genuine humility. Many of these clerical climbers want to be exalted and want the laity to kiss their arse. Pat if you’re remember Christy Jones was 78 when he retired in Elphin and John Kirby was 80 when his resignation was accepted in Clonfert. They don’t always get to go at 75 because the congregation for bishops is very slow at processing this stuff for smaller dioceses that are not considered major appointments. That could actually see Neary around for 2-3 more years potentially.

My poor Timmy looked quite crestfallen at lunchtime. He said he hadn’t much appetite as last night’s Chinese was causing havoc.

It is surprising that Fr. Purcell was appointed to this position due to the following:
a) He is a Cistercian monk of an Order that is dedicated to enclosure/seclusion, so this appointment is incompatible with his stated way of life;
b) His lack of managerial experience (questions about his financial management of Mount St. Joseph Abbey have been highlighted is a letter to the Father Immediate of Mount Melleray Abbey, Dom Michael Ryan; and,
c) The lack of stated professional qualifications in this area.
The Mission Statement of Towards Healing states:
“Towards Healing is committed to supporting victims/survivors of Catholic Institutional, Clerical and Religious childhood abuse and also their families. A friend of mine left her two cats with a lady who lives in her street when going on holiday — upon her return both cats’ fur were mottled and matted, it was awful.
Without going into too much detail, one of the cats has lots of fur and around the back there was dried pieces of you know what, when the cat walked it sounded tubular bells clanging together.
My friend fainted with shock on the very spot and we had to whiff smelling salts under her nose to bring her back round.
It was awful, truly awful, I say again.

He’s moved on as his daughter have moved to Larne but hes staying in Belfast as long as he’s comfortable. I asked him about Larne re protestant stronghold but that is receding now. Could you please expand on this as what do you mean by St Luke’s? Is it their association with St Luke’s facility? I would deeply appreciate this cis I’m quite uncomfortable of resuming my therapy via towards healing. It was stopped few years ago cos I had issues with 3rd party and then Cov19 came along which stopped my tracks.
Anyway, I wish Bishop Martin well in his new retirement. Lufthansa trips are bit expensive as I have flown with lufthansa a couple of times. They treat passengers well based on my experience with them re pilot strike. KLm would be my choice if it arose again cos of reasonable fares as Dutch bit better than the Germans sticklers.

Last evening, I received an e-mail from an individual, who shared something very profound with me; it was so personal and so stark; it has informed my thoughts for most of today. Having reflected on the contents of that e-mail, and discussed the matter with people this evening, I am mindful that: a) Richard Purcell has a family, and, b) people can be fragile.

In reply to all the various shrill comments, I will simply reply that I have a copy of affidavit sworn under penalty of perjury by the older brother of a young man. He affirms a conversation he had with his younger brother where the latter confirms he “knows” Richard Purcell; I need write no more. All the ranting and raving in the comments is not going to change this reality. Nonetheless, the affidavit makes clear the position of Richard Purcell is untenable and he should resign as the Abbot of Mount Melleray Abbey and/or take some time out from monastic life to discern if he “truly seeks God”.

I am not going to comment any more on the blog about this matter. I will confirm that mandates have been signed, affidavits are ready with one more to be finalised.

NOBODY wishes and/or wants to escalate this matter to Rome. The classic way of resigning from office is on the grounds of ill-health and/or state it is your desire to focus more deeply your original vocation, and then disappear in due course. It would be good if this was ameliorated by the Feast of the Epiphany. Of course, Richard Purcell may choose not to resign; then the matter will be in the hands of a Advocate of the Roman Rota, and a Rome-based Tribunal, again, I asseverate nobody wishes for this matter to go to Rome; but, Abbot Richard has been given every opportunity to resign and do the right thing for his community.
