DERMOT FARRELL GOES TO DUBLIN.

Dermot Farrell

After 16 years of a media archbishop the arrival of a quiet “country cousin” is certainly different.

But will it make any difference?

The Irish nation is no longer a confessional Roman Catholic nation and in fact is, justifiably, anti-Catholic and anti-clerical.

In a few days time the Three Wise Men will bring their gold, frankincense and myrrh.

What will Wise Man Farrell bring with him to Dublin?

The “gold’ of Roman Catholic doctrine?

The “frankincense” of hierarchy and clericalism?

The “myrrh” of patriarchy, misogyny and the antediluvianism of an institution that is of total irrelevance to the 21st century Ireland.

The Dublin diocese has two major problems facing it:

1. The massive rift between the archbishop and the clergy created by Diarmuid Martin’s unwillingness and inability to treat the Dublin priests as brothers and fellow workers.

2. The massive financial crisis left by Diarmuid in spite of the GAA millions.

The priests of Meath and Ossory will tell us if Farrell is a good or bad manager of monies.

As time goes by the priests of Dublin will tell us if Farrell heals the rift that has lasted for 16 years.

Farrell nay be a “nice man”? I have never met him and don’t know.

Nice is certainly better than nothing.

The question is: “Will nice be enough”?

I think that like all other Irish RC bishops, Farrell will continue to simply manage decline.

He is a company man.

I was amused by a comment yesterday:

“If there room for an Audi and a dining room table where nothing of substance is ever talked about, then Dermot will be happy”.

That what happens when the Kingdom of God is reduced to an institution.

“There is neither priest nor prophet to ply his trade in the land”.

How free and wonderful it is not to be a part of it.

I laugh at the thought of DF healing a rift with priests.
He relies on informants. He relied on Donal o’Neill’s expert opinions in Maynooth while remaining aloof of seminarians…. turned out Donal was having difficulty on the auld vocation front himself. Mind you that didn’t surprise us seminarians due to his behaviour, or his stories of climbing over the wall (when he was a seminarian) following nights out with particular nurses. Even as a priest football and golf were more important than God and doctrine.
But I digress from Msgr. Audi F – who was capable of a decision based on meeting seminarians once a year for a 30 minute talk on whatever tickled his fancy (sex and +Pat Buckley’s blog in my case).
DF choose not to make connection with seminarians. He did not dine with us. He did not converse with us. He did not pray the office with us as a community.
He left behind a seminary culture which Hugh Connolly paid the price for.
I hope for Dublin’s sake DF has changed. If he has no interest in knowing his priests he will never understand the laity.

I had my silly fun pre-seminary and knew what I was signing up for. As a chaste seminarian I focused on my own formation. The activities of others was not my concern, although I did ask the man and his visitors next door to keep the noise down late at night, as I like my sleep.
Both of you infer your low standards in my direction. It says more of you two than me.
As for being stuck in seminary stage… then as now I recognise bad people management. My recognition of it and refusal to accept it has resulted in a good career with a staff and budget not dissimilar to DF’s. However, while he tries to manage shrinkage of his organisation I manage growth and expansion I mine.
Now I am not here to educate you, or to correct your childish ways. So I wish you the best for your small-minded lives.

Why on earth would any decent person express good wishes to a principal guardian of an institution, the Roman Catholic Church, that is self-evidently ‘corrupt, and riddled with corruption’.

Well said 👆. I don’t know the new Dublin Bishop either just news of him on paper. We don’t know the real DF except for maynooth ex sems or now priests.
DF is a company man who will defend rcc at all costs irrespective of you or me. He will defend that institution no matter what even corrupted one’s. Why should we fawning on him cos its not worth. Its interesting re his record of stewardship in maynooth that we as lay people don’t know much about him.
Its a very clear indication that the Vatican have quite deep interests in all things to money by appointing him to look after the biggest diocese in Ireland. Thus loads of money.
We as lay people shouldn’t be contributing to Dublin diocese where we have no say in this matter. They can do what they like with our laypeople money thus no accountability. Thus is the reason I stopped contributing it as I give it to homeless by giving them food such as tea or coffee with take away food to keep them healthy and alive.
On final note, DF is a pure company man who don’t have our real interests at heart, only for the Vatican and for themselves. We all need a dose of reality as regards to rcc.

I have experience of a number of other organisations, institutions, businesses etc as a result of my working professional life. I have to say to you that none of them would be responding to what is happening in their organisation or business with the same lack of urgency which we see in the Catholic Church. It is clear that there is a systemic problem, perhaps even an existential one, which most reasonable minded and good willed people surely can see ? And yet, the hierarchy of the Catholic Church just seems incapable of seeing it, or if they do see it, of acting. The appointment of a 65 plus man to Dublin does not hack it. From my experience in business, any such problem would be gripped with firmness and action taken. Just letting it slip, waiting for someone else to do something about it, hoping it will go away or not come to the boil on your watch, just would not ever have been acceptable. Anyhow, first and foremost, they have to accept there is a problem. Are we absolutely sure that our bishops and priests know that there is a problem and what the problem is ?

There is a chapter coming up and some of the brethern formally and informally have called for it to be closed and the students relocated to Rome, for a variety of reasons, some of them obvious. Interesting article, but I would question one or two points. Firstly, you say that Ireland is anti-Catholic, I would disagree. It’s true that there are some people in society with Christianophobic views, but they are in the minority and it so happens that their views disproportionately influence the mainstream media. Though there are many young people who believe and follow the Catholic faith, albeit that they perhaps don’t attend church on a regular basis. To say that Ireland is anti-Catholic would be an over exaggeration. It seems to me that there is a Christianophobic view held by the minority and this view is pedalled by many of the mainstream media. The danger is the self-fulfilling prophecy, that priests start to believe that people have turned, and in fact reinforce that view in their sermons. This must be avoided at all costs.

Society at the time of Jesus was staunchly Christianophobic, yet the Church did not focus on the fear of those more powerful in society. They just got on with the job of sharing the good news, that Jesus died to take away their sins, that their sins (even the worst of them) can be forgiven, that jesus heals, that we will find heaven through our belief. They left the Christianophobic people to their own devices. Some of whom (e.g. St Paul) later became Christian.

The Christ of 2000 years ago is no less with the church now as it was then. Christ is able to do all that he did 2000 years ago. We only need the smallest ounce of faith, the smallest belief that Jesus is with us and we too can bring Christ to the people.

Remember the power comes from Jesus, not from us. If we invite God to work through us, if we invite the Holy spirit to use us as God wills, then perhaps we too might be every bit as efficacious as St Peter, or St Paul, or any of the other Christian greats.

Next time we get a church full of passers through, people who only come at Christmas, Easter, Weddings and Funerals maybe instead of complaining because they don’t come every week, perhaps we should instead thank God for sending them to us, and pray that they will be blessed by the Holy Spirit. So instead of leaving church like they got a row for not coming more often, they instead leave with the effervescence of the Holy Spirit.

Forgive me for being so bold as to question your view. But there are many young believers who just need some encouragement. Don’t be fooled into thinking that they are anti-Catholic just because they don’t attend church every week.
