In the whole John Paul Lyttle affair John Paul himself is not 100 % responsible.
While JP obviously had an overriding desire to be ordained, he was under the authority of others whose responsibility was to decide if he was suited to ordination.
John Paul was in three seminaries at least – The Wing in Belfast, Oscott and Spain. He also spent time with the Franciscans in Donegal where he was introduced to Boyce.
And did I hear that the Franciscans sent him on a placement to Africa?
I know his attempted sexual seduction by Donaghy in Belfast unnerved him. But did he leave The Wing after that or was he asked to leave?
Some time after leaving the wing he approached Bishop Crispin Hollis of Portsmouth who sent JP to infamous Oscott
Eventually there were problems in Oscott and eventually Hollis went to Oscott to interview JP.
Hollis indicated that he would try and retain him.
But, Hollis, after discussing the matter with his Diocesan Consultors dismissed JP as a seminarian.
Various interesting stories are circulating about JP’s time in Oscott.
JP then seems to have taken refuge with the Franciscans in Donegal.
There he met Boyce of Raphoe.
Then the Fras sent to have sent on an African excursion / mission.
Then he reappears is Isleworth, London, residing with a Portsmouth priest Father Ray Lyons.
Next, in the company of some youngsters he brought back from a gay bar he fell out of Lyons’ window and did serious brain damage.
There was a police investigation but no charges were brought.
Next JP appears on the Portsmouth diocesan website, wearing a clerical collar ( though not a cleric) with a diocesan title making him “diocesan representative to the marginalised”, whatever that meant.
Next the new bishop ordains him suddenly on a weekday evening.
Bishop Hollis did not attend.
Later he becomes a curate and hospital chaplain at Reading.
He gave a paper in the hospital on ethics.
Then he invites the young policeman to dinner, admires the cop’s trackie bottoms, shares dinner and three bottles of wine with him and asks him to stay the night – telling him the PP was away for the night.
The young cop makes good a swift escape. But not only after JP tells him” I’m always horney, I watch porn and wank”.
The young cop is stunned and gets no satisfaction from the local clergy, the bishop and the diocese.
So he speaks to me for advice and support.
He has never had an apology from JP, the diocese it the bishop.
Meanwhile the bishop tried hiding JP in another parish where he was discovered.
Next we are told he is going important research work for the diocese.
And now he is missing in action.
Some say he is back with Father Ray Lyons.
Others say he is on the way out of the priesthood.
