MR STEPHEN WILSON – ARMAGH SEMINARIAN.

EAMON MARTIN has received quite a number of serious communications about his seminarian, Stephen Wilson – a native of Coalisland, Co Tyrone – and his suitability for the priesthood.

Stephen Wilson has been very controversial and much discussed in clerical and Maynooth circles for several years now.

Had Covid 19 not intervened it seems that Mr. Wilson would have at least been ordained a a deacon by now.

That ordination has not happened yet, thankfully.

I’m told that Eamon Martin himself has concerns about such an ordination but that he is under serious pressure from the Maynooth faction, to ordain?

And Eamon is a weak man – not good at standing up to pressure.

Mr. Wilson is a former airline cabin crew employee.

I would have a huge preference for allowing Eamon Martin to sort this out directly and privately.

I do not really want to deal with such a complicated and potentially horrible case on the blog if it can be avoided.

BRAZILIAN ARCHBISHOP ACCUSED OF SEXUALL ABUSING SENINARIANS.

Archbishop Alberto Taveira Corrêa of Belém, an archdiocese with more than 2 million residents in the Amazon region in Brazil, faces criminal and ecclesial investigations after being accused of sexual harassment and abuse by four former seminarians.

The accusations were disclosed by the Brazilian edition of the Spanish newspaper El País at the end of December and became a high-profile scandal on January 3, when TV Globo’s weekly news show Fantástico aired a report on the story.

The names of the former seminarians have not been revealed. All of them studied at the Saint Pius X seminary in Ananindeua, in Belém’s metropolitan area, and were between 15 and 20 years old when the alleged abuse happened.

According to the alleged victims, Corrêa usually held in-person meetings with seminarians in his residence, so they didn’t suspect anything when they were invited by him.

One of them, identified as B. in El País’s story, used to frequent Corrêa’s house for spiritual guidance, but the harassment began after the seminary discovered he had a love affair with a colleague. He was 20.

According to the report, B. asked Corrêa’s help and the archbishop said that the young man had to comply with his spiritual healing method.

“I came to the first session and it all started: He wanted to know if I used to masturbate, if I had an active or passive role, if I liked to alternate roles [during sex], if I used to watch porn, what I thought about when I masturbated. I found his method to be very awkward,” he told El País.

After a few sessions, B. casually met with a friend who told him he was also attending that kind of meeting with Corrêa. His friend said that the encounters had evolved to other practices, such as getting naked with the archbishop and letting him touch his body. B. decided to leave the seminary for good and ceased to meet with Corrêa.

He and his friend remained in touch and eventually met two other former seminarians with similar experiences.

El País’s story includes lurid details of the former seminarians’ accounts. A. said he was threatened by Correa after resisting his efforts to get intimate with him. Like B., the seminary discovered he had an affair with a colleague.

“He said he would tell my family about my affair at the seminary,” A. told the newspaper. The archbishop allegedly promised to reinstate A. if he submitted to his demands. He ended up being sent as an assistant to a parish and was allowed to go back to the seminary afterwards.

“It was common for him to pray beside my (naked) body. He would come close to you, touching you, and started to pray into some part of your naked body,” the former seminarian alleged.

Another former seminarian, who was 16 at the time, told investigators that Corrêa usually sent his driver to pick him up at the seminary, sometimes at night, to have spiritual direction. The encounters, which allegedy took place for some months in 2014, included penetration.

The alleged victims reported that Corrêa used as part of his method the book The Battle for Normality: A Guide for (Self-) Therapy for Homosexuality, written by the Dutch psychologist Gerard J. M. van den Aardweg.

According to Fantástico’s story, the accusations were sent it to Bishop José Luís Azcona Hermoso, bishop emeritus of the Marajó Prelature, who has extensive experience working with victims of abuse.  The accusations then reached the Vatican, which sent delegates to investigate the case in Brazil.

Azcona didn’t respond to Crux’s request for comment.

On December 5, Corrêa released a statement and a video in which he said that he had been recently informed of “serious accusations” against him. He decried the fact that he hadn’t been “previously questioned, heard or given any opportunity to clarify such alleged facts included in the accusations.”

Mentioning only that he was facing “accusations of immorality,” he said he lamented that the alleged accusers had opted for the “way of scandal, with the circulation of the news across the national media” with the apparent goal of “causing irreparable harm to me and provoking a shock in the Holy Church.”

A campaign supporting Corrêa has been launched on social media. Fantástico’s noted the archbishop had the support of notable Catholic leaders in Brazil, including the famous singing priests Fábio de Melo and Marcelo Rossi.

On the other hand, a group of 37 organizations released an open letter requesting the immediate removal of Corrêa from his post while the inquiries were ongoing. One of the signatories of the document is the Commission of Justice and Peace of the Archdiocese of Santarém. Archbishop Irineu Roman of Santarém later released a statement to clarify that he hadn’t been consulted by the Commission about the document.

The Archdiocese of Belém said in a statement that the ongoing inquiry forbids it and the archbishop from commenting on the case at this moment. The National Conference of Bishops of Brazil [CNBB] declined to comment.

The Apostolic Nunciature didn’t respond to Crux’s requests for comment.

Corrêa, 70, was ordained a priest in 1973 and became an auxiliary bishop in Brasília in 1991. He was the first archbishop of Palmas, in Tocantins State, and became the archbishop of Belém in 2010. He’s the ecclesial advisor of the Charismatic Catholic Renewal in the country.

If Martin has “serious concerns” and goes ahead and ordains this man, it will be grossly negligent and irresponsible to say the least.
What on earth is wrong with the Church? In our day, if there was even a slight whiff of scandal attached to a student, he was out the door! GONE!!
There has been “talk” and disquiet about this student for quite some time now. And yet there he is large as life. You would know to look at this character that something is amiss.
The question is, does he have “dirt” and has to be kept “sweet”??? If he is ordained the church will bitterly rue the day. Every effort should be made to halt such a disaster.

While our Health Service and associated hospitals find themselves at ultimate breaking point the best you can offer is scandal and more unfounded allegations- shame on you Pat Buckley.
You prayed for mercy and forgiveness at your online Celebration of The Mass yesterday which I thoroughly enjoyed but please turn away from sin and start praying for the hospital that I nurse in and the scenes that I witnessed before I finished my 14 hour shift today.

It is always hard, I imagine, for a doctor nurse, to lose a patient they tried to save. It goes against all you stand for.

When I have been in hospital I was extremely grateful to the doctors. But the nurses were great to me 24.7.

In 1991 I had a bowel resection and was very ill for 4 weeks. After 29 years I still pray for the nurse, Rosie, who sat with me during the nights.

Well, if that picture of Wilson is anything to go by, he should still be pushing trolleys for EasyJet or whatever airline he worked for. Really ! Come on, + Martin, give us priests who are manly and robust, please ! Enough of the high collared, coiffed, limp wristed girly boys ! Oh, sorry, they’re a bit like you, aren’t they….?! Aahhemm, well, anyway, give us some proper men priests, if you would. Seriously, though, it sound to me as if + Pat has enough torpedoes to sink the Bismarck, never mind Wilson, and I think a prudent retreat by both + Martin and Wilson is probably a wise thing to happen. Otherwise ? The shit will truly hit the fan. Now, we don’t want that, do we ?! Not good for anybody, that. I suggest post-Covid the galley trolley might be Wilson’s true calling……

One really does begin to wonder if there are Irish equivalents of Alberto Taveira Corrêa? Is that why certain seminarians can’t be expelled?

OK, so now we know that the Roman Catholic Church has harboured individuals who didn’t believe in God, but who became priests and religious (of both sexes) so as to exploit opportunities for dominance and sexual abuse, while enjoying the status of moral superiority and the comfort of protection from their superiors. BUT -the same thing has happened with Third World charities and aid organizations, especially as regards their volunteers. Unlike the RC Church, this is still not being properly addressed -even though we have retired aid workers being regarded with admiration, after sexually abusing African children for forty years. Do you want to condemn the entire Third World charitable aid effort as hopelessly corrupt? As regards the Church, we urgently need a frank autobiography from one of these evil people, throwing light on his or her psychology. The nearest we have is the disgracefully self-justifying autobiography by Rembert Weakland, former Abbot Primate of the Benedictine Order and archbishop of Milwaukee, and a sexual predator.

This is about something else entirely but it caught my attention this morning when scanning the Belfast Telegraph. Sadly I am not a subscriber and after they erected a paywall, I lost my daily access to the musings of great minds such as Nelson McCausland, Eilis O’Hanlon and Ruth Dudley Edwards. Anyway. I saw an article here on Donal McKeown condemning the cost of entering secondary education and the financial pressures it placed on parents. I will quote it here:
https://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/education/bishop-warns-business-must-not-dominate-exams-debate-39953441.html
Bishop McKeown told the BBC’s Sunday Politics Northern Ireland programme: “AQE would have about 9,000 pupils applying this year. That’s half a million pounds coming in to run a business.
“And let’s say you work on the assumption that parents are spending maybe £250 on tutoring [for their children] – there’s another £2.5m.
“We’re not just talking about making educational changes – we are talking about a business.
“When business becomes a major element in educational decisions I think, perhaps, we’ve lost the point.”
I am at a loss here. Is the Catholic Church in the North different from the Catholic Church in the South? Does it have two completely contradictory policies towards secondary education? I would have thought that Donal McKeown would have known this best, considering that his own diocese straddles both political jurisdictions. While the Bishop of Derry condemns the system of testing and parents who want to see their children enter grammar school, the most expensive Catholic private schools flourish in the South. I skimmed Wikipedia and the web for fees for Catholic private schools in the South. Gonzaga College charges €6,605 in annual fees (not boarding). The Catholic University School in Dublin charges €5,700. Blackrock College charged €6,900 in 2017-18 for day fees. This article in the Irish Times in December 2017 shows the fees for each private school in the South.
https://www.irishtimes.com/news/education/the-rise-of-private-schools-there-s-a-lot-more-money-around-1.3338945
I don’t want to get involved in the correctness of whether or not there should be selection tests for students into secondary education in the North, generally, or now at a time of pandemic. Rather, I want to ask how this discrepancy can exist. What is the official policy of the Catholic hierarchy to private education on both sides of the Irish border and why is academic selection for 11 year olds something to be condemned by the Church while selection by being born into great wealth and privilege isn’t? If I can quote the Bishop of Derry again:
“When business becomes a major element in educational decisions I think, perhaps, we’ve lost the point.”

For years Donal was happy enough to be headmaster of a grammar school that selected the top performing pupils in the 11+.
The 11+ plus was as important as the civil rights movement, the fall of Stormont and the IRA campaign for allowing Catholics in Northern Ireland to get ahead and get good jobs, despite the institutionalised discrimination they faced at every turn. That is why the late Fr Denis O’Faul was such a believer in it.
The stark reality is that Sinn Fein politicians and their supporters oppose selection because they personally failed the 11+. No leading Shinner went to university.

Like

Have you ever heard the Shinners when they are speaking in the Assembly? They are embarrasingly bad.

Like

Well said – I find it totally hypocritical that Donal who was headmaster of a grammar school and Eamon Martin who was also headmaster of a grammar school – or President – to give them their correct titles – never once complained about the 11+ during their tenures in charge but as soon as they left and got a pointy hat they had some sort of St Paul on the road to Damascus conversion against and it is a great social evil and should go. What crap – total hypocrites. As for the Shinners your comments are spot on there as well – scrap it but have nothing to replace it with – just the crap fest that has endured since – Shinners shouldn’t be let near government

Like

Yes, 08:26 pm, Donal and Eamon were quite happy to pick the cream of the crop and to say to those with low 11+ grades “Sorry, no place for you here”, and did so for years, and now their former schools are wicked if they try to do something like that.

Is Udris at Oscott ? If so, that inspires confidence – not ! The place is an exemplar of mediocrity and a rather strange subliminal homosexual eroticism and culture. Even if + Longley couldn’t see it. I’m no supporter of David Marsden and his obsessive twitching about sexuality and masturbation, but if Oscott really does want to put itself forward as forming healthy, integrated, stable and intellectually well formed priests, then it really does need to up its game in all areas. Years ago they used to say that those who can work, those who can’t teach. Well, I think priesthood is becoming a bit like that. Those who want an easy life and can’t really be arsed to do anything else, well, somewhere like Oscott and priestly formation sounds quite attractive. Most of those guys there wouldn’t be able for a good university education, and probably wouldn’t want or be able for the hard work. Sorry, harsh, I know. But true.

Here’s the thing: for years concerns have been raised with the hierarchy and ignored. Usually the letters aren’t even acknowledged.
Without any recourse there is literally no way to raise things and the hierarchy has to be forced to do something.
There are literally no proper channels – after decades of RC abuse and scandal the papers aren’t interested.
Pat has been forced to do what he does and I am usually amazed he is still as calm as he is.

What compels you to constantly sneer at, mock, name call and ridicule any person, irrespective of their position? Criticisms of bishops, yes: mocked and gratuitously insulted, no. Never.
