EMAIL TO AMY ABOUT WILSON IGNORED.

The Cover Upper and the Cover Upper Emeritus.

An email I sent to Any Martin at 2.30 pm on Sunday about Stephen Wilson, has unsurprisingly, been ignored.

Amy has the ignorant habit of ignoring and even refusing to acknowledge letters and emails.

When she was brought up in Derry did her mamny not tell that doing things like that is sheet bad manners?

I, of course, understand her contempt for me.

It is equaled if not exceeded by my contempt for her.

But I genuinely wanted to give her the opportunity to address the Wilson problem internally. That would be best for himself, his church and Mr. Wilson.

But if looks as if there will have to be an external solution.

That’s fine.

As usual, the Wilson problem revolves around the homosexual area.

Abercrombie Wilson

There are a number of serious issues involved – that may involve senior clergy and great public scandal.

Knights of Malta Wilson

Amy has already received serious reports about these matters.

In fact, it’s so serious people in Rome are interested and asking questions.

I would ask people to send us information so we can process this matter.

If Amy deals with the matter properly, we will back off.

These sorts of comments only make sense if they are coming from naughty clergy who are either caught, or are afraid of being caught, by Pat Buckley.

+Pat. Regardless of the rights or wrongs, virtues or faults, of those you blog about, when you persist in referring to male religious persons by using effeminate terms with female “nicknames ” you undermine your criticisms, demean yourself, and add fuel for those who criticise you. You also, in Trump like fashion, encourage the lowest common denominator of abusive commentators.
Is it necessary? Why?

MMM, I don’t think you understand the culture if priests and seminarians using feminine games for each other:

Dear Patrick,
I am with MMM on this. While I hear what you say about the use of feminine names among clergy and seminarians, I am sure, but stand to be corrected, that it emanates from from the Dorothean traits of those who are her friends (Friends of Dorothy).
I am sure it is not your intention, but, it seems to me, whilst using feminine names for male characters, might it not perpetuate, aid and abet the very thing being challenged on this blog: that of priesthood becoming, or already being, a gay “profession”? Like so many here, I have no issue with gay priests, if they live according to their promises/ vows, but have no time for those who habitually do not live according to their vows while demanding, for example, that married lay faithful must stick to their marital vows; the duplicity and hypocrisy rightly condemned on your blog.
Just a thought.

Like

Pat: consider your target audience and those you wish to inform and influence. If it is the effeminate clergy or hypocritical hierarchy then you should have realised by now you’re wasting your time. If however you seek to influence a broad swathe of “ordinary Catholics” towards forcing change and reform, a use of language seen by the majority (outside of the clerical culture you refer to),as pejorative, seems to be counter productive and ineffective. By lowering your communication to the level of the clerical culture you refer to, yet in other aspects severely criticise, you expose yourself to ridicule and deter the ordinary person from taking your messages with any seriousness.
“Hits” in terms of blog readership or comments may provide satisfaction but a lack of visible productive action implies a ‘voice in the wilderness.’
I repeat my unanswered questions: is it necessary, and why?

There is absolutely no justification to use effeminate name calling language when speaking about our bishops. It is undeserved. At 9.50 Pat attempts to justify the indefensible by referring to the infantilic behaviour of some seminarians. I’m not a fan of Eamon Martin, however it’s unacceptable to refer to him as Amy or by using female pronouns. This was acceptable amount a small number of older gay men in the past. Today, it is deemed offensive, not just to other gay men but to women too.
This isn’t political correctness gone mad but the awakening of an awareness of how our language often ‘unintentionally’ marginalises and damages everyone , even the user.
The fact that clergy of his own diocese refer to Martin as Amy only strengthens my point. It’s not a pet name nor a term of endearment. It’s a name calculated to demean and insult and what better way to do that than by feminising him. Can’t you see why gay men and all women would find this offensive?

Like

The fact that this practice is quite common among the clergy also doesn’t make it right.

In the 20th century the majority of ordinations involved people who went to seminary immediately after school. Many were in diocesan colleges and secondary schools of similar makeup. Some went to minor seminaries. They reached physical sexual maturity discovered their sexuality somewhere along the line and mostly without any public living out of it.
Today hardly anyone moves from school directly to seminary. Things are very different. The environment is one where many young people are sexually active in their early teens. And those entering seminary can have had a series of sexual relationships and a decade of sexual activity behind them.
Why would we expect that the transition from that state of affairs to a celibate lifestyle should happen overnight? It’s not realistic to do so. Western society is seriously sexualised. Why would we presume that student priests and male and female religious would not be products of that society? It’s easy to condemn another person from the safety of anonymity when our own sexual history is not under scrutiny.

Like

I’m all for giving people some latitude and time in the matter of maturation and development. However, seminarians, certainly by the time they come to take the minor orders, should have been able to work out their attitude to sexuality, their own identity, their own behaviour, and their keeping of celibacy and chastity. If by this stage they are just seeing celibacy / chastity it as an optional extra that they can ignore if they so desire and still carry on with priesthood, – well, surely, even the most flexible of us can see that is not healthy or sustainable – for them or for the Church ? if the Church continues to insist on mandatory celibacy and expects a certain standard of behaviour and lifestyle from those who represent it and preach its teachings, then it is not unreasonable of us to expect that those people live what what they profess and preach, surely ? Or is there something I do not get…..?!

Like

10.37 No, I think you get it very well. I blame it on the poor “formation” they receive, plus a lack of of psychosexual maturity and integrity in the applicants; both these attributes are also lacking in those who are supposed to assess their suitability and guide them through formation. As the saying goes, “You can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear.” There are plenty of sow’s ears trying to make silk purses…

I can assure those who are commenting negatively on the use of female nicknames for + Armagh, that clergy habitually use such nomenclature in their own conversations about their bishops and brother priests. It’s an indication of the louche homosexualisation and eroticisation of the priesthood over the decades by the ordination of so many men who live in that culture, some very out and active, others quietly and frustratingly. It’s another indication of something not just right about the clerical culture.

As for the issue of Mr Wilson, it is clear to me that there is something pretty serious in terms of skeletons in his cupboard that has not been adequately addressed. What we are seeing in the blog and contributions is a sense that this young man needs to confront issues from his past, and that those responsible for his formation have a responsibility to acknowledge them and address them. That does not seem to be happening, and so people are frustrated and angry. It is clear that whatever the specifics of these issues might be, + Armagh et al are stubbornly refusing to engage, probably because they still believe that being Church they are inherently right and probably because they refuse to be seen to give in to any pressure. All these reasons for inaction are indicative of clerical arrogance.

For the sake of Mr Wilson, I would strongly recommend that + Armagh gives some indication to + Pat and to us that these matters are being taken seriously, and that they are working towards a solution. What that might be, I do not know, but it is only fair to Mr Wilson, to us and to the Church, that + Armagh engages and comes up with a solution that is fair and just to all. Just to obdurately refuse to take any of this seriously and to treat the many concerns expressed about this matter by many people, is just a contemptuous dismissal. Which leaves + Pat and others with no option but to air the dirty linen in public, much to everyone’s discomfort.

So, + Armagh, get off your high and mighty throne and start to engage. Or, there will be a lot of shit to clear up over the next few days. That’s not a threat, it is just the reality of what will happen because of your inactivity.

Like

PS If Eamon Martin we’re to indicate that he is addressing this issue seriously I would give him 3 months of Blog silence on the matter. And were we to see it addressed properly there would be little or nothing left to say.

+ Pat @9:37 – somebody should print off a screen shot of your comment at 9:37 and send it to + Armagh, recorded delivery, so that there can be no doubt that he has not seen / heard your very reasonable offer. There is a way out of this for + Armagh, and for Mr Wilson, and indeed for the the lot of us ! It is very simple. Just listen, + Armagh, to the mood music and what is being said, look at it carefully, come to a decision, and implement that decision. Rather than just ignoring it out of episcopal arrogance and aloofness. I believe that if you do look at things, even speak or be in contact wit + Pat and others and listen to what they have to say, you will be in a position to do the very best for the interests of Mr. Wilson and for the Church. Yes, it may well be that Mr Wilson is guided to another way of life, but that could possibly be the best course of life for him, rather than blindly carrying on to ordination and to future problems. I sense that you know this already, + Armagh, but you are just too bloody proud and arrogant to listen and do the right thing. That’s something else we can discuss at a later date. But, in the meantime – just do it, please !

Are you not listening to survivors tell their experiences on Radio and TV? The last thing they want is for their TRUTH to be vandalised by anti church zealots. They want acknowledgment of their TRUTH. They want a sincere apology followed by action to ensure justice and compensation. We know that Church, state and society colluded to ensure the hiding away of women and children. It is morally reprehensible that any church personnel inflicted pain and hurt on any woman in their institutions. I am ashamed because as a teenager in the late 60’s I heard talk about such places and heard many a whispered conversation among neighbours in judgment, yet we all seemed to collaborate by our silence and inaction. I have personal experience through friends and relatives in the early-late 70’s who were “placed” in such homes. Thankfully they were treated well and reasonably kindly but the scars remain at so many levels. I asked these friends recently about their reactions and I know that they don’t want retrospective condemnations: they’ve heard this all too often. They want their TRUTH respected and acknowledged and proper JUSTICE in compensation. They do not want their experiences to be abused by people with agendas unless these agendas serves their quest for TRUTH and JUSTICE. I, for one, will be doing much personal soul searching about my silence over the years….

Okay, let’s cut to the chase. No matter what Wilson is supposed to have done in the past, one question that could be asked right now, and which would give us a clue as to his suitability for ordination is this: Is Stephen Wilson chaste and celibate now ? Usually, I could not care a toss for what people get up to with their bits, or with whom. But, in the case of a person who is putting himself forward for ordination, and who is implicitly and explicitly agreeing to undertake celibacy and chastity in their lives as required by the Church, it is not an unfair expectation that the individual lives a chaste and celibate life. So, is Wilson living a chaste and celibate life ? If he is, then fine, let him go forward for ordination, all other matters being equal and he being deemed suitable. But, if he is not, then he should not be ordained. It is really quite a simple matter. A simple question. Surely + Martin of Armagh can ask these questions and find some straightforward and simple answers.

Like

So, + Pat, do you have information to suggest that he is not celibate / chaste a present ? If so, then send it to + Martin of Armagh. Others should be brave enough to share what they know, confidentially, with the Archbishop. If he ignores it, then it will be on his conscience. If Wilson is not suitable for ordination and is ordained in spite of evidence to the contrary, then the inevitable trouble in the future will come and sit like dog shit on + Martin’s doorstep.

The late Fr Sean Lavery, born in Edward Street, Lurgan, was a Columban who was made Director of Sacred Music in Maynooth after working in a seminary in the Philippines and doing a doctorate in sacred music in Rome. However, in 1987 he was forced out, ironically by Mgr Ledwith following an indescretion by Fr Lavery in the Junior Infirmary, which was witnessed by Frank the nightwatch man. Fr Lavery was posted to Jamaica.
Despite being only a student, albeit in IV Divine, Eamon Martin was asked to replace him and did so for a year. Whereas Fr Lavery had been strongly in favour of Gregorian chant and Irish music, Eamon Martin controversially changed the college choir’s high-minded and sophisticated repetoire to Protestant hymns and sentimental, pious and mawkish Victorian Catholic favourites (mostly Marian) from before the Council, of the type loved by old ladies and sung by them with great faith and fervour.

FERNS REPORT INTO CLERICAL SEXUAL ABUSE, OCTOBER 2005
– The first official inquiry into the activities of abusive priests – in the diocese of Ferns in County Wexford – detailed the Church’s handling of 100 allegations, including of rape, against 21 priests dating back to the mid-1960s. It found that for 20 years the bishop in charge of the rural diocese did not expel priests but simply transferred them to a different post.
COMMISSION TO INQUIRE INTO CHILD ABUSE, MAY 2009
– The Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse issued a five-volume report which found that priests abused children between the 1930s and the 1970s in Catholic-run institutions. It described orphanages and industrial schools in 20th century Ireland as places of fear, neglect and endemic sexual abuse.
Generations of priests, nuns and Christian Brothers – a Catholic religious order – beat, starved and, in some cases raped, children, the inquiry found. Some of the testimonies spoke of children scavenging for food from waste bins, being flogged, scalded and held under water.
MURPHY REPORT INTO CLERICAL SEXUAL ABUSE, NOVEMBER 2009:
– The Murphy report investigated widespread child abuse by priests in the Dublin archdiocese between 1975 and 2004 that the Church ‘obsessively’ concealed under a policy of ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ about abuse. The archdiocese was preoccupied with protecting the reputation of the Church over and above protecting children’s welfare, the report said.
CLOYNE REPORT INTO CLERICAL SEXUAL ABUSE, JULY 2011:
– The report into the handling of sex abuse claims in the County Cork diocese of Cloyne showed that senior clergy were still trying to cover up abuse allegations almost until the present day, a decade after it introduced rules to protect minors, and that the Vatican was complicit in the cover-up.
Then-Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny accused the Holy See of obstructing investigations into sexual abuse by priests. The Vatican responded by recalling its ambassador to Ireland.
MAGDALENE LAUNDRIES REPORT, FEBRUARY 2013
– An official report compiled by an inter-departmental government committee into Ireland’s notorious Magdalene Laundries found that 10,000 women and girls, some as young as nine, were put through an uncompromising regime of unpaid work from the foundation of the Irish state in 1922 until 1996.
The report found that many of the women – some of whom were subjected to the harsh discipline of the institutions for simply becoming pregnant outside wedlock – were sent there by the Irish state.

– Following the 2014 discovery of an unmarked grave with the remains of hundreds of babies on the grounds of a former so-called ‘mother-and-baby home’, the Irish government ordered an investigation into the treatment of children at the church homes for unmarried mothers.
The report was expected to detail a level of infant mortality far higher than the average in the country at the time and accusations of physical and emotional abuse of women and children.

Because people are willing to believe any old nonsense these people put out. You can read it here every day – these people are so strongly deluded they are the good guys they have other people believing it.

The comments calling you a bully are very interesting. What kind of entitlement do these clerics feel that entitles them to do what they like including being allegedly celibate clergy and also have a ‘private life’.
To be clear a priest is a public figure and thus not entitled to a private life and what he does on his day off is of public interest especially when it could scandalise the faithful.
As for the comment about a prospective priest having possibly a decade of sexual activity under his belt before becoming a seminarian so can’t be expected to adjust overnight – what planet do you live on? Would you say that if he was getting married?
A prospective candidate for seminary should show an ability to live a celibate life for at least a few years before applying. There would be a difference if, say, a man had been married and widowed, from if a man had had a decade of promiscuous sex.
The latter case should automatically be excluded from seminary until he shows some evidence that he repents of his previous way of life and has brought himself under control.
If anyone is going to mention any saints who previously put it about – they were still expected to live chastely or celibately.

People like 5.19 who like to lay down the moral parameters of the lives of others are instinctively the very people whose own moral situations are anything but edifying. Just like the posing of the lace brigade who are at pains to be quoted about how vehemently they believe the old lie that gay people are intrinsically disordered.

Well here I am on the big chair ,in my apartment up along the north coast tonight, having listened to the jaw dropping report into the mother and baby homes scandal. And boy is it a scandal! Yes, the RCC was in it up to its neck, and the governments of the time were complicit also. But that was the price Dev and his fellow travellers paid having deferred so much and brown nosed the gentlemen in purple by letting them set the ‘moral tone’ of the country.
So now on the back of the findings of this report it seems that the Irish Govt are meeting this week with the RCC and religious orders to discuss those organisations contributing to a compensation scheme. Good luck with that one chaps!
Watch out for the rapid movement of assets and a mass declaration of bankruptcies of the orders concerned before assets or money can be seized.
I’m sure Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of NY, could share a blueprint of his manoeuvres in the States as to how he managed to thwart the authorities getting their hands on money to compensate abuse victims in his previous See.
Frankly, I’m so glad Ive long since seen through that organisation and ceased believing its warped message and then stopped financially supporting it.
Anyway, time for a wee golden sensation to keep the Atlantic chills at bay.

9:20: Your comment is the same old, same old typical holier than thou tactic of trying to “scare” people into following your version of religion. Such scaremongering tactics are a decrepit decaying relic of an ignorant clerical dominated uneducated age. The supposed religious truths are not only self evidentiary fatuous, but powerfully undermined by clerical behaviour worldwide. As such the whole farrago of religion and its advocates can be rightly ridiculed.

I have read that research has revealed that the higher the level of intelligence and education the less likely is a belief in religion. Polls of eminent scientists by the National Academy of Sciences showed that belief in a personal God was only 7%. 20% were agnostic, and the remaining 73% were atheists. If this research reflects the reality one can reasonably wonder why.
I don’t think DD will be worried at hell fire warnings or threats. I certainly am not.
But if antiquated groundless beliefs keep you and your ilk happy, 😊, the best of luck to you all. Just stop the empty threats.

Bishops ignoring information? I found out yesterday that our friend Josh Hilton of Leeds has been made secretary to the new nuncio in England. This is despite the concerns and warnings of various bishops. Why do they do it to themselves?

Like

His experience of “the smell of the sheep” didn’t last very long. So presumably he will living with the Nuncio in his VERY nice and VERY expensive residence on Millionaires’ Drive in Wimbledon. Meanwhile parishes are imploding for want of a priest. I suppose he now has a career path mapped out for him so he’ll never have to mix with hoi poloi ever again. Surely the fact he is young and sexy can have nothing to do with his appointment? I remember Heenan at Westminster had that wise old bird Mgr Fred Miles as his secretary. Hume soon got rid of him, though one would have thought that he might have relied on Fred, who was replaced with a succession of more “suitable” ( depending on your criteria ) types. What a bloody awful set-up!

Is your information correct? Wouldn’t the secretary of a nuncio be a member of the diplomatic corps i.e. a graduate of the Academia?

Like

No, wasn’t Vincent Berry (a Westminster diocesan priest) private secretary to the nuncio at one time? That’s how he got to be a monsignor.

Of course, Bp Pat, you are right, all is fair in love and war until they abandon their vile teachings on gay people and same-sex marriage. It’s a disgrace in this day and age.

There is a question posed several times today asking whether clerics are this infantile and nasty. Yes they are. Haven’t you read the bitchy comments they post on here?
The fact Pat allows them means people are exposed to the authentic clerical culture of the holy priests.
And the comment above about funds is an accurate prediction that funds will be hidden and protected.
The church is about money and a pampered, privileged life for its Boys’ club, nothing else.

Gorgeous went when he was rumbled – he knew the game was up. But he’s a very different kind of character to the Trolly Dolly. Gorgeous probably still has loyalty to +DM and didn’t cause much of a fuss – also he has been “looked after”.
The Dolly with the Trolly, on the other hand, if they try to oust her, to use aviation imagery, she will bring the plane down in a fire storm and, when her black box is examined, several airlines will go out of business – if you get my drift.
I can’t see the Troll Doll going quietly. That’s undoubtedly the dilemma they face. She will squeal the place down and trail her conquests out with her by the hair.
There will be lots and lots of laddered tights. Some of them under purple skirts. It will be quite frightful. But it would be better for all concerned to get the screaming match over. No matter who has to resign.

9.04: Nanny Norma: are you psychic that you know who is commenting? There are some clerics commenting today, as like other days. Strangely, the vast majority of commenters at any given time are mostly non clerics. That says a great deal about the blog. As MMM and a few others said recently, the level of debate of recent months became too aggressive and ad nauseam, argumentum ad hominem verbiage. Too much unnecessary vitriol, insult and very imbecilic debate. However, as a cleric, I am absolutely ashamed of the contents of the Mother and Baby Homes Report. As I commented earlier today, having personal experience of two friends and a relative (in the early 70’s) who went through such homes (primarily well cared for but scars remain) I am appalled at the way women and children were treated by Church, state and society. We had a weird, destructive narrative about sexuality – Catholic, Victorian, Protestant, Puritan – which, when forced on us as a moral template made all of us tyrants of judgment, intolerance and misogyny. One woman said today that the survivors do not want a blame game which only deepens their hurt. They want recognition of their TRUTH. They want their rightful identity to be acknowledged. They want JUSTICE and COMPENSATION. Yes, the Church ought to be made accountable and I hope it will respond adequately and comprehensively. We, as a society, must own our share of responsibility too. As a just response about our genuine care, shame and compassion, we must respond immediately in the kindest way possible. NOW. Also, as a society, despite pledges and political platitudes, must also work more earnestly to rid our society of homelessness, child poverty, family inequalities, temporary accommodation for immigrants and their children and provide all necessary support to parents with children who have special needs. Today, the survivors of Mother and Baby Homes deserve not just an apology but imnediate JUSTICE in fullness. They are deserving too of our respect for their courage in the face of much indifference and false promises. I am ashamed of my silence over the years, even though I have quietly helped many women and families in difficult situations. We must ensure from hereon that all women, children and families will be treated with paramount care. Maybe this time, the horror of this report will activate our consciences.
