MANY BABY BODIES BURIED WITHOUT RECOGNITION AND DIGNITY.

In the Northern Ireland Troubles from 1969 to 1999, 3,500 were killed and 46,000 injured.

The mother and baby home enquiry tells us that there were 113,000 victims – more than twice as many victims of the Troubles.

So the Roman Catholic Church in it’s mother and baby homes created more than twice the victims of the Troubles.

The IRA was a proscribed and illegal organisation for it’s activities.

Is there any real reason why the Roman Catholic Church should not be a proscribed organisation in Ireland?

When illegal criminal gangs are caught the government and police seize their assets as “proceeds of crime”.

Many of the very valuable Roman Catholic properties we see, their vast lands and their million euro bank accounts are the “proceeds of crimes committed in mother and baby homes”.

Why is the criminal assets bureau not seizing these properties, lands and bank accounts?

The reason is this.

In our society there are two types of criminals.

1. Illegal criminals we see processed by the police and courts.

2. Legal criminals – like the Catholic Church, banks etc.

The “Establishment” – politicians, judges, lawyers, medics, the Garda etc will not take on bishops, priests, nuns and brothers.

They are all part of the “Establishment” together.

The say God’s justice is good – but is awfully slow.

It’s up to the Irish People to administer justice to the Roman Catholic Church and representatives and operative.

Of course this must be done absolutely peacefully and within the law.

Here are some suggestions:

1. Never enter a building owned or run by the RCC.

2. Never contribute as much as a penny to the RCC or any of it’s associated organisations.

3. Tell every bishop, priest, nun and brother you meet that they personally are guilty of heinous crimes against the mothers, children and people of Ireland as long as they remain associated with the RCC.

I can hear already the rumbling sound of the Great Movement that shall arise on the Morrow, when, upon reading your stirring words or hearing them proclaimed by others, true and decent Irish men and women shall March upon those evil bishops and priests and nuns and tell them exactly what they think of them!!!

Great comment Father, very insightful. I note the way you have avoided addressing the appalling treatment of the inmates of the Mother & Baby Homes by both the Church and the State and instead have taken the easy option of abusing Bishop Buckley. The only great movement will be people moving further away from the church that through its actions has made itself increasingly irrelevant in Irish society. Expect future pay cuts.

The Commission’s report presents a history of our country in which many women and children were rejected, silenced and excluded; in which they were subjected to hardship; and in which their inherent human dignity was disrespected, in life and in death. Our Sisters of Bon Secours were part of this sorrowful history. Our Sisters ran St Mary’s Mother and Baby Home in Tuam from 1925 to 1961.
We did not live up to our Christianity when running the Home. We failed to respect the inherent dignity of the women and children who came to the Home. We failed to offer them the compassion that they so badly needed. We were part of the system in which they suffered hardship, loneliness and terrible hurt. We acknowledge in particular that infants and children who died at the Home were buried in a disrespectful and unacceptable way. For all that, we are deeply sorry.
We offer our profound apologies to all the women and children of St Mary’s Mother and Baby Home, to their families and to the people of this country.
Healing is not possible until what happened is acknowledged. We hope and we pray that healing will come to all those affected; those who are living and those who have died. We hope that we, our church and our country can learn from this history.

Bons Secours quietly sold all their Irish hospitals just before Christmas. Do they even have assets left in the country to use as compensation? Has all the money been shipped out of Ireland and away from the grasp of the Criminal Assets Bureau? Who knows. What we do know is the all the Irish hospitals bearing the name Bons Secours are now owned by a US company that has nothing to do with the religious order.
Did their Galway chaplain Mr. Donal O’Neill advise them? Who knows.
And what of the ladies still residing in these places some 50 or 60 years later? Yes; let’s face the deeper horror. We (Irish Society) have still forgotten about these ladies. Several such homes remain in operation.

We especially want to recognise and accept today that so many women who were shunned and shamed by society did not find the support and level of care they needed and deserved at such a dreadful and painful time in their lives. We welcome the announcement by An Taoiseach that he will be apologising tomorrow to all those who spent time in Mother and Baby Homes. For our part, we want to sincerely apologise to those who did not get the care and support they needed and deserved.
It is a matter of great sorrow to us that babies died while under our care. We sincerely regret that so many babies died particularly in regard to Bessborough in the 1940’s. We also want to recognise the dreadful suffering and loss experienced by mothers.
The burial of infants and children who died while in care has understandably become a matter of immense controversy. We are distressed and saddened that it is so difficult to prove with legal certainty where many of these infants were buried especially with regard to Bessborough. We did everything possible including the engagement of a professional historian to assist us in our dealings with the Commission on this vitally important matter.

I began to read your Pat Says….then stopped. I referred to my own written thoughts from yesterday and today. Sadly, they do not differ too much from what’s written here but I would not encourage any violence or harm or threats to any person. That will not ensure justice for survivors. However, I am appalled at the torture inflicted on women and children. The report makes me question my Catholicism and my silence over the decades. So many people – clerics, judges, Gardai, psychiatrists, doctors, families, neighbours, politicians, especially FF and FG – all conspired to create this horror. Anyone representing the Church betrayed not just the women and children but also CHRIST.

A powerful statement; and although I have always felt that there was a definite theocratic link between the Catholic Church and physical force patriotism, between the memorialisation of the martyrs of that thirty year campaign – and conversely the protestant unionist cause exhibited the same theistic character, so as to make the war nearly an unnegotiatable religious war until it was clear that no side could win and it became purely secular. But i never noticed – and I don’t think anybody else did either – the comparative ratios of human death in these Catholic institutions and the conflict on the streets of Northern Ireland. And the reason for that was that the children that died were never memorialised or given names or identity by which they might be known and remembered. They were anonymous in their hidden burial plots behind the high walls of these so-called ‘orphanages’, but in fact each of the children there had two living parents, but the infants were stripped of them by the nuns . Pat has performed a remarkable imaginative service by drawing our attention to this stark and terrible fact.

The proof has been in front of our eyes for decades. The standard practice of moving an abusing priest on so that he can abuse again is the only evidence we really needed. This is the practice the UN described as amounting to torture and it requires the morals of a mafia don.

As a Church leader today, I accept that the Church was clearly part of that culture in which people were frequently stigmatised, judged and rejected. For that, and for the long-lasting hurt and emotional distress that has resulted, I unreservedly apologise to the survivors and to all those who are personally impacted by the realities it uncovers. Mindful of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, which calls us to protect life and dignity and to treat everyone – especially little children and all who are vulnerable – with love, compassion and mercy, I believe the Church must continue to acknowledge before the Lord and before others its part in sustaining what the Report describes as a “harsh … cold and uncaring atmosphere”.
The Commission believes that there may be people with further information about burial places who have not come forward. I appeal to anyone who can help to do so. All burial grounds should be identified and appropriately marked so that the deceased and their families will be recognized and never be forgotten.

Where were the Law Society and the Law Library when all this was hapening? How can they claim to be real lawyers if they weren’t shouting and screaming when such crimes were happenng?
You can’t particularly blame the RCC. The problem was Ireland and Irishness. The priests were Irish priests and the nuns were Irish nuns.

Long ago my parents had no choice but to send me to a school for deaf children. At that time there was only two schools for deaf boys and girls in Dublin. There was none in West or North or South re provision of teaching and caring for deaf kids except Dublin. The interesting bit was when my parents spoke to Dominican nun re hearing test which confirmed that I have hearing loss. My parents asked that nun, how about sending my boy to that school for deaf boys just 1 mile across? Guess what, that nun refused to recommend it cos she must have heard various stories coming from that school. So that nun told my late parents that there is another school only for deaf kids age 3 to age 10 in South Dublin ran by the nuns. So my parents sent me there. There was a difference between schools ran by nuns and others ran by CBS. in my experience, I found the nuns worse, uncaring and callous, quite vindictive and ruthless at times than cbs. Cbs did the other way around re sex abuses which I avoided certain cbs. So my parents had no choice but to send me there as they had to pay for it. It wasn’t free nor state funded that time. Even parents from Northern Ireland send their deaf kids to Dublin cos they had no choice cos no proper school for deaf kids in Northern Ireland. That’s how it was that time.

Spoke to brother of SNAP rep now living in USA. He was abused by a priest in renmore parish way back. He fell out with his father cos father didn’t believe it when he brought it up re priest abuse at age of 9. Not surprised when I hear this cos parents trusted and believed priests more than their own kids years ago. Mind boggles. Two brothers already abused by a priest and other brother in school for deaf boys. I find this sad really re parents were blinded by rcc mass speeches and their high magisterium et al. Their speeches are political at times.
I agree that rcc is an evil institution whose octopus teacles reaches end of earth. Its them and us now as rcc can’t be trusted. I couldn’t contribute to rcc. If I did thus I would be seen as enabling them to continue their evil ways or alternative lifestyle as opposed to their teaching. Its good few priests who are suffering cos of their actions and consequences. But did they raise the abuse matter with thier bishops??? I don’t think so cos priests would be sent to remote locations as means of punishment or lesson handed out to him.
Long ago I concurred that rcc is a right wing political organisation with fascist tendencies. They did it at the expense of their own people – parishioners and their monies etc re Vatican rat lines and josef mengele who was helped by church authorities to escape to South America. Its mistake made by a fascist leader mussolini which he handed a new state to the Vatican. Did the popes and their bishops opposed mussolini from 1922 until 1945??

Dom Robert Igo has been elected ninth Abbot of Ampleforth, the largest Benedictine community in the UK. The election took place at Ampleforth on 5 January, in the presence of Abbot Paul Stonham OSB, delegate of the President of the English Benedictine Congregation, the Right Rev Christopher Jamison OSB. Dom Robert takes on the role of Abbot with immediate effect and replaces Abbot Cuthbert Madden, whose eight-year term of office had come to an end. The new Abbot will now hold overall responsibility for the monastic community and its works.
Fr Robert was born and educated in Manchester and worked at Manchester Royal Infirmary as a Student Nurse for three years in the 1970s. He was ordained priest in the Anglican Church in 1980 and served in parishes in Sunderland and Hartlepool. He was received into the Catholic Church in 1987 and joined the monastic community at Ampleforth in August 1988. He was ordained a Catholic priest on 27 June 1993 and three years later joined a small group of Ampleforth monks in Zimbabwe, at the monastic foundation established by the Ampleforth community in 1996, the Monastery of Christ the Word in Macheke. Since 2005 he has been Prior at the Monastery of Christ the Word.
The blessing of the new Abbot will take place at a special ceremony presided over by Bishop Terence Patrick Drainey of Middlesbrough, on a date to be arranged.

What a poisoned chalice for Igo to take on ! I hope that he comes to the same conclusion as Downside, and decides to fold the Ampleforth community and disperse it to other monasteries, or to another place completely,lock stock and barrel. It is simply not sustainable for a group of monks to be in such close proximity to a school of children any more. Certainly not monks with their history. One or other needs to move away physically. The monastic community should go and the abbey buildings given over to the school. I understand they are building / have built a fence / wall between the school and the abbey. What does that say ? I don’t think the fault for all of this lies with the children of the school. It lies fairly and squarely with the monastic community who over the decades have presided over / been involved with / implicitly allowed / committed the awful crimes against children that have been documented. Ampleforth Abbey has to go !

It is an emotional and troubling time for the Irish State and the Catholic Church in Ireland, and their intimate intertwining over the decades. There is no doubt that the Irish State was not in a position to provide many of the services that it normally would have provided to its citizens in its early years. Those services and responsibilities were franchised out to the Catholic Church and religious orders, who had the man/woman power and resources to provide. But, it was a Faustian pact. The State pretty much washed its hands of much effective oversight, and the Church and religious orders, as we know, were intimately complicit in much of the evil that was done under the guise of its pastoral provision and care. So, I do think that both the State and the Church and religious orders have a responsibility in this matter. That being said, there is no doubt that the bulk of the wrongdoing, and so responsibility, rests with the Catholic Church and the religious orders, and it is good to see some of the women’s orders making the right apologies and expressions of heartfelt sorrow at what was done by some of their predecessor sisters. What now from here ? Well, there will be a lot of shifting blame and focussing on particular responsible groups, but after that, what ? What is the State going to do to make absolutely sure that rigorous oversight is provided for any of the services that they, as the State, should normally do but chose to franchise out ? That does not just apply to the Catholic Church and the religious orders, but to any third party provider that they use. Next, the State needs to continue its distancing from the Catholic Church and cement in the secularisation of Irish society. Citizens have shown regularly over the last few decades that they do not want to be in a stranglehold relationship with the Catholic Church, in particular in respect of moral, sexual, relationship, marriage and life matters. They want to make up their own mind. They will listen respectfully to what the Catholic Church has to say, but they will not slavishly follow and will exercise their own conscience and freedom of action. Given the unhealthy and damaging relationship between the State and the Catholic Church over the decades that has resulted in so much wrongdoing and hurt, the time has come to further cut the ties between the two. The State has the ultimate responsibility given to it by the people, and therefore should exercise its authority and responsibility over all other institutions, including the Church, and should not be put off by cries of freedom of conscience and religion. The Catholic Church in Ireland has to come in to line with and under what is a liberal, modern democracy, and can no long claim to be exceptional. This the price the Catholic Church in Ireland must pay for the evil things that have been done by its bishops, priests, nuns and brothers, which are not absolved by some of the undoubted good they have also done. The Catholic Church has nobody else to blame for its new relationship with the people of Ireland; it has brought it on itself.

One thing to add as apologies are not enough. The RCC should be forced to pay compensation. Whether that comes by confiscation or some other means, it must happen, and swiftly before typical RCC avoidance tactics seeks to hide its vast wealth. I’ve little doubt a referendum on siezing church assets for compensation purposes would have considerable support.

It probably would be better if the Catholic Church in Ireland – both dioceses and religious orders – offered up some of their assets as compensation. Many diocese and religious orders are wallowing in money, property and assets, as their numbers dwindle down to a handful of oldies who are going to die soon and not be replaced because of the dearth of vocations. You will find a few old monks who survive holding property, assets and money worth huge amounts. The Catholic Church in Ireland needs to think of a way of transferring some of those assets so that they can be used for compensation, help and repaying the people of Ireland. If they don’t do that, then the State and the courts should step in and make them do it ! If not, they will begin to transfer their assets to the Vatican and elsewhere beyond the reach of the State.

@2:05: You make a truly valid point that the diminution of clerics and religious adds strength to a case for relieving them of their ill gotten wealth. They no longer have a need to hold onto land and properties.
I’d just be concerned that any offer they make would fall far short of a realistic compensation: they’ll just try to get away with offering as little as possible, and many weak politicians may seek to acquiscently accept it to avoid rocking the boat of state/church collusion.

Lisburn Les @ 3:33: That is why the State needs to get tough, and make sure that whatever arrangement is made, it is robust and realistic. Remember, many states have expropriated church property from the Church before. Pretty much all churches and church occupied property in France is property owned by the state, who expropriated it at various stages, and is just leased back to the Church for its use. Why should that not happen in Ireland ? I don’t think the majority of people would object to that, especially since most of it was built and bought on the pennies of the ordinary people. And, especially as the Church and its priests and bishops have been so egregiously wicked over the decades and do not deserve to be cosseted.

I think you’re getting mixed up. Madden, the now ex-Abbot,is the former doctor / GP, and he is the one teaching boys sex education – quite graphically I must say ! It does seem a odd watching a monk in his habit talking about ejaculation, cumming, STIs etc. That is not Igo. Different people. Igo was a student nurse, then an Anglican priest, i think, and then joined Ampleforth, and then went to Zimbabwe. Now he’s to come back from the sunny climes of southern Africa to the cold, dank, valleys of North Yorkshire. Poor chap.

Bishop Pat, my nanner who is still alive told me about what happened to here sisters and her mum when their dad died in Cork in the 1950s and they had to ask for extra help because there were 8 kids to look after.
I honestly thought the Church and civil authorities, colluding, with regards to abuse, or the covering up of, were times way gone by now and, the world had changed from then.

My nanner Pat told me that her sister was beaten to within an inch of her life, by a nun, for not making her bed properly. She was only 6 years of age.
Aunty Peggy died in 2006 of a brain hemorrhage whilst retuning from County Cork on a coach; she was sitting next to my nanner Pat on the coach when she went home to God in her sleep.
Before she went to sleep on the coach she said to my nanner Pat: “Pat, I’ve been waiting to come here for over 30 years, I feel at peace now.” They then had a little gin and tonic from nan’s flask before Peggy fell a kip. She didn’t wake up.
My nanner Pat said she had been ill on-and-off for years.
Nanner Pat said Aunty Peggy was at rest in her soul upon visiting their mum’s grave in Cork, my great nanner’s and the girls’ grave: their 2 baby sisters who died: one at age 11 months, the other at 3 years old, are also burried with great nanner.

Yes, she liked a little drink, but Aunty Peggy was one of the “unlucky” ones sent to a convent for 18 months whilst my great nanner recovered from the death of her husband. My nanner Pat was one of the lucky “lucky” ones.

In all fairness, my nanner Pat said there were very, very nice and holy nuns who were caring and genuine and would bring coal and baby food round occasionally and, would do their best to keep the rest of the kids from being sent off (even fighting the corner for some mothers in the area) but the genuine ones were outnumbered and, very far and thin in-between.”

My nanner Pat says I was quite quick witted and had no qualms in standing my ground – or that of my mates’ in the playground and street – when a teenager.
I was the kid always bringing injured pigeons home and insisted my dad hp me heal them before releasing them, again.

My dad said he had no other option but to knock down the seperating wall in the outdoor shed and convert it into an animal sanctuary — he built rabbit hutches, etc… It even had thermostatic heating for the Winter months!
My dad layed the underground electric cable from our house to the outhouse: and I did the electrics, light and sockets and thermostatic heating. I installed a Wylex 6 slot fuse box with the old pus- button fuses – similar to modern RCDs. I was only 13 years old 😊

Totally wrong I pointed out that they do not appoint an Apostolic Administrator on Death of a Bishop.
It is the College of Consultors that appoint an Administrator and in this case they met this afternoon and appointed Monsignor Hugh Bradley the current VG.
However they are expecting a New Archbishop this year it only took Eight months when Cardinal Thomas Joseph Winning died.
However I would be surprised if a VG was made straight to an Archbishop usually and Auxiliary or a Bishop gets moved up.
Sadly the careerist things he is going Paisley to Glasgow.

1. When you say a priest has abused, they always point out that someone else has abused, so see it as normal.
2. When you point out their crimes they make out you are singing your own praises.
