  1. Chair of the Congregation of Religious of Ireland / Missionary Union charity for victims of clerical abuse. They say the provision of counselling is a “positive” church response. But, is there no religious who is more qualified; experienced to undertake this role? Is there no active religious in Ireland, who over the last 20 years, has gained insight, sensitivity, some understanding of the pain and lies endured by survivors than Abbot Purcell? Or is it part of a bigger game plan?
  2. As an enclosed religious, what is his contribution to the Bishop’ Conference Committee on liturgy? He is musical! So what? Trips back and forth to Maynooth, overnights, expenses. Why did Amy appoint hi,? Or is it part of a bigger game.
  4. KNIGHTS OF MALTA
  1. Having been publicly attested and confirmed as lector and acolyte, Mr. Wilson has moved towards candidacy for ordination as deacon – based on “maturity of purpose” and to have the “necessary qualifications”.

This was all hushed up whilst the Knights maintain a distinct separation from the ambulance corps they are the governing body of the corps and responsible for safeguarding.
  3. There are a number of professional men in the order – and this includes their chaplains – who make use of the prestige, ceremonial, dressing up, in order to invite young men into the knightly ways.
  4. Perhaps Amy should enquire with regard to this candidate who aspires to be a caveleiri and to serve the Lord, the sick and the poor?

I informed you a long time ago that the next archbishop of Dublin would be Bishop Farrell. Unfortunately there was a mix up at the terna stage at the Congregation of Bishops meeting due to Covid and English speakers being unable to travel. The wrong Bishop Farrell’s file was put on the top of the pile. However, it is what it is. Carmelengo Cardinal Farrell is not happy. But he remains a true son of Dublin and as such will exercise his offices and note in due course – Amy – there is not and will not be any reason for you to purchase scarlet stockings. Cardinal Farrell is very annoyed indeed, after all favours for the family is what cardinals are for!

  1. A NOTE TO THE BISHOP ELECT Please ensure at your reception Mass in the Pro-Cathedral, Holy Communion is distributed by clerics and ministers of the Eucharist. Arthur Roche went scarlet in the face when he read what was written about the last ordination of a bishop in Armagh – when all the bishops and priests sat on their bums throught Communion. Amy, there is no need to send for catalogs – there will be no scarlet watered silk for you.

Despite the demise of his Roman patron Cardinal Sodano, he really is pinning his last hopes red and gold straws on the Dicastery for Communications of which he is one of the few non members of the sacred college. Look at the diocesan website; before he is deleted, at all those speeches and sermons given worldwide to men and women of great importance and influence and now the church can do better. IF YOU STILL DOUBT ME There is a photo of the dicastery within the hall of audiences in the Vatican. Coddle cuddles up in the chair on the right of Bergelio. Do not be fooled by this Machievellian cleric.
  2. Coddle ensured that following Enda Kenny’s false outrage and rant in Dail Eireann, and indignant closing of the Irish Embassy to the Holy See; Enda and family entourage were received in a private audience.
  3. Coddle has times his departure very, very well. The Mother and Baby Home report has exploded and even Coddle cannot charm the editors on that one!

9:59 – I read that, but unless you know what all the initials refer to, it is pretty meaningless. It’s probably a spoof. He is spot on about the clergy on the nonces’ wing / protection wing/ vulnerable prisoners’ wing. Go in to any prison where they keep sex offenders, and you will come across a priest, often several. They try to lie low and keep quiet about their past life and crimes. Wise. The alternative is getting pummelled. It’s the price they pay for their crimes.

9.43: Pretty much like most priests. We do fine re: visiting sick and housebound. I worked with an 86 year old retired priest whose dedication to visiting the sick and housebound was exemplary. Presently a retired priest- 86 – is also exemplary in this regard. But in this pandemic it’s very challenging……with health, safety and well being of all being paramount.

Dear Bishop Pat
Slightly off the topic of the day and apologies for that, but an acquaintance has directed me to this blog. I am a parent of a pupil at St John Vianney’s RC Primary School, Blackpool, Lancashire. I believe that some of our parents and Parishioners may have contacted you previously about our Parish Administrator, Father Daniel Etienne and about his concerning behaviour. May I add to those concerns please. The relationship with the young Father and our school, the staff, parents and pupils has irretrievably broken down. His whole fire and brimstone approach has caused us to break all ties with our Church and the Head has now decided to take the children to Mass and to visit Churches elsewhere in the Deanery and wider where the clergy welcome the staff and children, are kind, and know how to engage with both children and staff. His general attitude and conduct leaves a lot to be desired. He has left several staff and children upset by the way he speaks to them and the way he speaks to some of the parents is awful. It was a difficult decision to take our children elsewhere, particularly as our School is next door to the Church. I believe that our Head has written to the Bishop, but sadly we aren’t expecting a reply. The Church hierarchy must focus on building the Church of the future and on encouraging our younger generation to come to Mass, and should not be forcing the opinions of the likes of Father Etienne down their throats. This young man is not suitable for for Diocesan Priesthood and would be far better suited to a religious order such as the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest in Preston, where they are very traditional in approach, style and dress. As well as the School raising concerns with the Bishop, several Parents have sent letters to his home address in Lancaster, but these too are ignored. I sympathise with the Bishop as there is a shortage of Priests, but surely the answer isn’t allowing the likes of Father Etienne to run Parishes. By all accounts, the Bishop is a lovely and prayerful man, but clearly he is not up to making the tough decisions that are required. Pray for us please and pray that this man will not be appointed Parish Priest.

Let’s give some credit to Father Etienne for keeping the churchs under his care open for private prayer and public liturgy in the current times. Other churches nearby and within the diocese have closed….

This is correct, in that every Mass celebrated validly is a recapitulation of Christ’s Eucharistic sacrifice of himself. There is only one sacrifice, hence you can say that there is only one Mass celebrated a multiplicity of times. Protestants, especially the pig-ignorant Calvinist variety, accuse the RC church of teaching doctrines that it doesn’t hold.

Under certain circumstances, exceptions may be granted for enclosed men to leave their enclosure temporarily, but Dom Richard may have been using trips to Maynooth as an opportunity to visit the Boiler House and all the gents en route between Cappoquin and Dublin.

Not Fr Etienne again?! I just googled him – he’s been ordained 5 minutes and seems to have upset everyone. Why on earth is he in charge of several Parishes at this early stage of his vocation? Sounds like he needs shifted under the the leadership of an older and wiser man as things will only get worse. His Parish website boasts a photo of him on the home page, so he clearly thinks it is all about him. What is the Roman collar and cassock all about son? We are not in the 1960’s!

I was at Maynooth in the early eighties. I used the convent laundry infrequently, only for bedding. The rest I did by myself, preferring to be self-sufficient and to save money.

But on the occasions I had to visit the place, I was always struck by the subdued atmosphere of the workforce. There was none of craic and revelry, joking and banter that you would find in most other workplaces; it bothered me, to be honest. It looked abnormal, and I assumed it was the presence of a nun-manageress in the that was prevented those women from being human. I knew nothing then of ‘Magdalen’ launderies, or ‘Mother and Baby Homes’; I was young and naive. Was that laundry one of these places. I have thought about it since those times and have always wondered, always hoped that it wasn’t. Pehaps you could tell me.

The many people who commented recently on the mother and baby homes seem to think that they are the Magdalene laundries. They are not, as people would discover if they read the report.

The Maynooth Presentation Convent laundry is not listed among the Magdalene laundries. They were operated by other orders, plus the Presbyterians and Anglicans, as listed here:

If you are including me (at 2.21) as one of the ‘many people who commented here recently’, I assure you that I am aware of the distinction between ‘Magdalene’ laundries and ‘Mother and Baby Homes’, and my earlier post notes this.

If (as you state) the convent laundry in Maynooth village was not listed as a ‘Magdalene’ laundry in that report, was it, then, one of the ‘Mother and Baby Homes’?

Not the Blackpool landladies again, surely the school has been closed since January and would have been closed for most of last academic year? All services have been suspended for schools throughout England and they could not have gone inside any church building since Ash Wednesday 2020. Are you saying he’s coming into school assemblies and preaching ‘fire and brimstone’ ( English Protestant term) ? Then the school hasn’t followed the policies that have been in place since the start of September about gatherings and numbers so get Ofsted to investigate as they have put your child at risk

Yes our School is still open for key workers children thank you. Our children still attend local Church for Mass. We never closed.

All Churches remain open in Lancaster Diocese my friend, Parish Priests decide if things change which
is dependent on local outbreak figures and on the goodwill of stewards, so stop stirring things. All schools have been open here too, the only change over last few weeks if that only for key workers children of which there are a significant number in our School. The aforementioned Priest has been asked to stay away this last few weeks, but
our children still attend the odd Mass in school time and in Covid secure Churches, maintaining social distance at all times. All within the rules thanks.

I do not think you really can recommend the Head Teacher and Parents to Ofsted as i am sure the Head Teacher and Education officials will act accordingly.
However to any Blackpool parents with pupils at this School please contact Councillor Kathryn Benson @ cllr.kathryn.benson@blackpool.gov.uk who will address any issues with the Dioceses and the School.
Also if this is another Bishop not replying to issues then again the laity have a right to contact the Papal Nuncio who who ask the Bishop for an answer nuntius@globalnet.co.uk
And what is alarming that schools and Children are mentioned so maybe ask the diocesan Safeguarding team to have a look at the situation as well.

The posters describe themselves as concerned parents so they do not speak on behalf of the school. If there was a disagreement between the local priest and the school I’m sure both sides have found it difficult and the school will have been concerned to maintain a professional attitude and whatever has happened must have remained a private matter, by posting on a blog dedicated to exposing hypocrisy in the clergy they are bringing the good name of the school into a forum that I’m sure any competent head would prefer to avoid. There is no accusation made about Fr Etienne other than alleged rudeness or high hand ness, wearing Roman vestments and a cassock, he has not been accused or associated with any of the egregious scandals that this blog discusses. My feeling is that those who are upset in Blackpool are looking to find someway to seriously compromise the priest and I don’t think dragging a primary school into this pursuit is at all appropriate or sympathetic to the present situation in the UK. Are you looking for strangers to say “ Yes Fr Etienne is awful and must be removed within 24 hours”, why? Imagine if one of the teachers in that school was named here for a similar reason

I’m interested to see the Order of Malta mentioned here. He, the former Redemptorist of Galway, wasn’t long appointed their chaplain when he set his beady eye on a young fella. Luckily, the young fella got creeped out and gave him a wide berth, and also tried to alert someone who reported it. However, we are not allowed to say anything about this influential priest, so it was all hushed up. Bishop Kelly likes those with money and friends in high places.

The Sisters of the monastic Family of Bethlehem implement a “Cell of Listening”
and emphasize their path of conversion

Since 2017, the Sisters of Bethlehem have continued a path of conversion according to the directions given them by the Dicastery for Consecrated Life following the Apostolic Visit initiated in 2015. The permanent council of the monastic sisters, composed of the new prioress general, six sisters counselors nominated by Rome, and the apostolic assistants who conducted visits of the monasteries in France and Israel, Father Jean Quris (Diocese of Angers) and Mother Geneviève (OSB), is determined to move forward in this work of truth and reform.

This path has gone through a progressive and sorrowful realization of the consequences experienced by certain sisters of a conception of authority either idealized or founded on an erroneous understanding of monastic obedience, leading to abuses of authority or of conscience and to affective dependency.

Sister Emmanuel, the current prioress general, and the sisters of the permanent council, have listened to some sisters who have left. In the name of their community, they want to say how much they have become aware of the extent of the wounds and deep traumas provoked by such dysfunctionality. They are aware that for many, their self-esteem, their free will, and their relationship of trust with the Church necessitate a difficult and slow recovery. Sister Emmanuel and the permanent council are extremely sorry and ask forgiveness.

In order to improve the welcome of and to better hear those who have been wounded, and to take into account the complaints according to the requirements of truth and justice, the permanent council of the monastic sisters is implementing an independent “cell of listening”. This cell is composed of two psychologist experts in these matters, a Benedictine father abbot emeritus, a Benedictine monastic sister, a retired magistrate judge and a lawyer also trained in canon law. This “cell of listening” is charged with gathering the testimonies received, recommending to the permanent council the follow-up in order to render justice to the victims, and issuing recommendations for the pursuit of the council’s reform efforts.

Following the conclusions of the apostolic visit, a path of conversion has been initiated and advances have already been made in the past years. The service of authority is maturing progressively thanks to the exercise of collegiality, as much for the prioress general as for the local prioresses. The local chapters and the councils have recovered their role of consultation and decision-making, especially in the steps of admission and engagement of sisters for profession.

Since 2017, sessions for prioresses and vicars have taken place with the help of outside speakers (theologians, psychologists, monks), and have been enlightened by the final texts of the Magisterium and those of the CORREF, along with the testimonies of wounded persons. These meetings have allowed developments especially in a better circulation of speech and information within and between monasteries, in the more attentive discernment and accompaniment of vocations, in the possibility to call for an outside person for accompaniment. Moreover, these sessions have been occasions to advance a reflection on the correct manner to exercise authority and to live obedience, in view of the person’s growth in Christ.

The last meeting of prioresses that took place in November 2020, with the help of the apostolic assistants and of Anne Lannegrace, a psychologist and psychoanalyst, has marked an important step in the awareness of the prioresses on the way to exercise the service of authority. At the end of this session, the prioresses have expressed their consent for this press release, for the implementation of the “cell of listening”, and have manifested their determination to go to the end of this way of conversion which will take effect in the next constitutions.

The monasteries have been involved in this process since 2017, first of all by receiving the points raised by the Dicastery following the visit, then through the work of revising the constitutions of the Family of Bethlehem as requested by the Congregation of Religious.

In order to accompany this work of revising the constitutions, the Dicastery has named two counselors, in particular for canonical questions, Father Dumortier (SJ) and Father Toxé (OP). This work is being done in regular consultation with the perpetually professed sisters, allowing reflections and exchanges in a healthy freedom of expression, and an awareness of the practices that need to be corrected. The final texts will be submitted to a vote at the next General Chapter of the monastic sisters planned for 2021 and then the final texts will be submitted to Rome for approval. They will thus become the reference texts for the Sisters of Bethlehem.

All these steps are lived in communion with the brothers of the Monastic Family of Bethlehem and their apostolic assistant, and in close connection with the Dicastery for Consecrated Life (CIVCSVA)

According to sister Emmanuel, the prioress general, “We are aware that this work requires time, patience, and perseverance. The establishment of the “cell of listening” answers our deep desire to do the work of justice and reparation for the persons who have been wounded in the heart of our Family and to ask forgiveness. Our commitment to this path is total; our last council of prioresses marked an important step in this path and we are determined to go to the end. Despite all our mistakes and faults, we also know the Love of God, and the deep joy that we find following Christ in our monastic vocation. It is our responsibility to purify what still needs it so that the evangelical life according to the Spirit may be fully unfurled. Our hope for the future of our Family is fortified by the repeated encouragement of the Dicastery who has told us over and over again the value of the charism proper to our monastic Family, of which the assistants are also witnesses.”

In November, the apostolic assistants addressed the prioresses in these terms: “The time has come for a clear acknowledgement of the mistakes and faults of the past, so that the charism that you have received may be fully lived. Like any charism, it has something unique and precious to bring to the Church. The path that we have lived with you for over five years has convinced us of this.”

The branch of the sisters of the Monastic Family of Bethlehem was founded in 1950 and consists of around 550 sisters in 29 monasteries in 15 countries. They live a monastic life offered up in adoration of the mystery of the Most Holy Trinity in silence, solitude, fraternal communion, liturgy, and labor.

I’ve been listening to Bishop Keenan all week for his 8am Masses on-line. He sings all the hymns with no music and hasn’t the best voice bless him, but good for him that he tries. That aside, he is a pastoral man and is popular with the clergy and over 400 people viewing a day, so I suspect he will be one of the three who are considered for the See of Glasgow where he was ordained. There is no issue with the seminarian in Paisley. An investigation was carried out, no complaints, so no action, he has been advised to get his head down and continue discernment. He may have made mistakes before entering seminary, but he deserves a second chance and has 6 years to prove himself, seems fair. The current Administrator of Glasgow, Monsignor Hugh Canon Bradley will then likely be sent to Paisley, seems a good plan. I’m informed that +Leo has told his advisors that will not be moving to Glasgow as he is awaiting a transfer back to the Vatican, or even to Westminster. Don’t believe the post from earlier in the week that suggested Bishops from one Bishop’s conference cannot be incardinated to govern elsewhere. Nothing in Canon law to stop this. It is up to the Holy Father. Arch Leo and Bishop John are held in high regard at the Vatican. Watch this space I suppose. Meantime, pray for the happy repose of Archbishop Philip. He deserves his eternal reward.

The Seminarian has gone and will not be a priest or even a candidate for the paisley Dioceses.
Archbishop Leo Cushley will not be going to Westminster always a chance to go back to Rome.
Monsiginor Bradley will be more than happy as a Vicar general as he does not have the health for a Bishop if Bishop Keenan goes to Glasgow IF then bishop McGee maybe brought to Paisley.
The three names for Rome Keenan, Nolan and Toal with Nolan being the safe hands for few years.
Misinformed as there is NO way Archbishop would even discuss Glasgow as he always say he is the Archbishop Of Saint Andrews and Edinburgh.

Doesn’t Nolan have a serious heart condition if I’m correct? That would rule him out as being a metropolitan is a very stressful job. I would have thought Toal was the leading choice due to experience. However I can’t see a decision being made for 12-18 months anyway as this seems to be the case when a see becomes vacant…

Archbishop Cushley will definitely be going back to Rome and Bishop Keenan will be heading for Clyde Street.

Monsignor Bradley is not in best of health and will be happy to stay there as VG.

I’ll second Jardine’s information on the seminarian in Paisley, McNamara, I’m informed he took very unwell at the end of last year and has put a lot of weight on following on from this. I’m advised there is a plan in place for him to resume his academic studies in Rome when is back to his fit self and as Jardine said to keep his head down.

Let’s pray the church in Scotland continues to prosper.

Bishop William Nolan did have a heart attack however he did receive stents in and very healthy now but yes maybe the stress of Glasgow would be too much but like Archbishop Philip he would not say No.
Metropolitan is really a name only as the Archbishops have no say in any other dioceses and likewise another Bishop cannot interfere in another Dioceses
Bishop Toal has Very poor vision but again would jump at the chance of Glasgow.
Glasgow needs a renewal programme and many changes as far too many parishes some as low as 6% attendance.
Glasgow was filled in Eight Months before then once it was empty for three years with two Administrators in post.
We need to trust the Papal Nuncio that he will do his homework.

Bishop Hugh Gilbert is still ignored. I can assure you he is the front runner. The speculation by those who are not in the know is very misleading and simply wrong. On this blog there is far too much ill-informed comment about the appointment of the next Archbishop of Glasgow. I really do wish commentators would not pretend they have ‘inside knowledge’ when the truth is they know little or nothing about such an important appointment..

A few thoughts.
++ Leo Cushley is far too prudent and schooled in the art of diplomacy to discuss the vacancy in Glasgow. He will always keep his powder dry. And yes there is nothing to stop him being translated to Westminster. He would be an excellent fit.
+John Keenan has a certain following who would love to see him in Glasgow. It is questionable as to how popular he would be among the Glasgow Presbyterate. He is a lawyer by training and reputed to be one of Tom Winning’s protégés but there are thoughts that ,at this stage in his career, an appointment to Glasgow would leave him there far too long. Next time perhaps!
+ Bill Nolan , like Ab Philip, has had heart problems. That may well be a consideration especially in view of the onerous workload involved in sorting out the Archdiocese.
+Bishop Toal would be an excellent choice. Sadly, however he also has health issues. His eyesight has been failing and there are rumours, only rumours, that he may retire.
+Brian McGee has an excellent track record and has ‘served his time’ in A&I. His translation to Glasgow must be a distinct possibility. He would be a popular choice with clergy.
Although only an observer, but a well seasoned one, my best guess is that the man from Edinburgh will be calling Bishops Move*

No Scottish bishop will be going anywhere south of the border so get that into your thick skulls. I predict 2020-2021 will a time of monastic scandals, in Ireland and throughout the Church. I hope that Bishop Pat will return soon to the Silverstream/Glenstal/Melleray axis of abusive and criminal behavior. Presumably the faux mystic and deviant, Dame Kitty von Kirby, remains in the midst of impressionable young men? Good for him. He’s 86 now and doing well. Still living in the Newlands Villa. He’s a great man. Anyway, life as a PP is hard these days but very quiet today. . My day so far – up at 8 and morning prayer followed by a full cooked breakfast. Then morning mass at 11 until 11.30. Had a stroll then watched a film with a few gins. Lovely lamb dinner with a bottle of red and then off to bed. Up at 7 and now calling a few pals, night prayer then a few more drinks, TV and an early night.
