EAMON MARTIN’S BBC INTERVIEW.

The View, 28/01/2021: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m000rssw via @bbciplayer

Painful as it was for me to do, I watched Eamon Martin’s whole interview on BBC i player.

It was obvious to me that he was making a great effort to be very politically correct – the mourner’s tone, the sticcato verbalisation, the quasi tearful eyes, etc.

He went way over the top in trying to shift the blame as much as he could away from the Church to society as a whole.

But society does not just emerge without movers and shakers and without people and organisations that actually shape it.

The society that existed in the Republic of Ireland was shaped almost wholly by the Roman Catholic Church – apart from the obvious  effects caused by the 800 years of British occupation – which had more effect on politics rather than life in general.

Society in the Republic of Ireland between 1921 and perhaps 1970 was a confessional Roman Catholic society.

The Purple Parliament at Maynooth dictated to the Dail and in the person of John Charles McQuaid, who was De Valera’s friend, confident and Lord Archbishop, there was the REAL ruler of Ireland.

Not only did Dev genuflect to McQuaid and kiss his bejewelled hand, but he also involved McQuaid and a number of Holy Ghost and Jesuit priests in the writing of the 1937 Constitution.

The Constitution declared that Roman Catholicism was the state religion.

And Dev & Co put the church in charge of schools, hospitals, universities, orphanages, mother and baby homes, Magdalen Laundries etc.

In opposing the minister for health, Dr Noel Browne, McQuaid insisted that the bodies, sexuality and souls of women and children were EXCLUSIVELY a matter for the RCC and none of the state’s concern or business.

McQuaid even rebuked the editor of The Irish Press for carrying women’s underwear adds that showed an obscure image of the vagina – what McQuaid called the “mons veneris”.

The RCC owned the vaginas, breasts, wombs and fallopian tubes of every Irish Catholic woman and would limit, control and dictate their use.

So the attitude of the whole of Irish society on all these matters were created and maintained by the bishops, priests and religious

Irish ethics and morals had to conform, in every detail to Roman Catholic doctrine and teaching.

And if doctors, policemen, lawyers, journalists etc wanted to keep their jobs they upheld that teaching too.

John McGahern

It was people like McQuaid who banned the writer and teacher John McGahern from teaching and forced him into exile in England.

Amy is trying to push the blame on to society.

That society was a creation of the RCC.

It was not society that forced women to eat their own vomit in mother abd baby homes. It was Roman Catholic nuns who did that.

It was not society that made a pregnant woman mop up after her waters broke. It was an RC nun.

It was not Adel’s (the lady we read about tge other day) father who drove her to imprisonment. It was her parish priest.

It was not the unfortunate women who sold their babies into adoption. It was the RCC that did that.

WHAT TO DO NEXT

1. We need a full public enquiry, North and South into everything that went on in RC institutions.

2. Any priest or nun still alive who was part of the RC gulags should be prosecuted and imprisoned.

3. The state should confiscate RCC bank accounts and properties to give all survivors the most generous of compensation.

4. And I imagine this will never happen, but the RCC should be a proscribed organisation like other organisations responsible for torture and death.

Historically the RCC is guilty of various forms of terrorism.

The women and children in those homes experienced real terror. And those who inflicted the terror on them are surely to be called terrorists?

I was born in 1952.

I experienced terror, physical and emotional in the RC schools I attended.

I entered seminary in 1970 and I experienced forms of emotional and intellectual terrorism in Clonliffe Seminary, Dublin.

I experienced severe bullying at the hands of clergy in Wales and Down and Connor.

But most of us, thank God, have never suffered the terrors and horrors suffered by those poor women and children.

I often ask myself why God has never repaid the RCC for all the evil it has done.

And then I remember that God has nothing to do with the Roman Catholic Church.

Hopefully he’ll be placed in the general prison population. They’ll give him a taste of his own medicine.

Like

They won’t put him with the general population. He will be on a wing for ‘vulnerable’ prisoners, kept apart from the general population. Then he will go to a specialist sex offender prison, where they are all the same, although amongst themselves they will have a hierarchy of offences. Oddly, rape of a woman is considered worse than child abuse. He doesn’t really deserve to have a great time in prison, I know, but he does have a right to be kept safe and treated decently. His punishment is his loss of liberty for 11 years. During that time the theory is that he will become rehabilitated. Of course, he may continue in denial of his guilt and refuse to cooperate, in which case he will do much longer than the usual 50% of his time before parole. I understand his confrere Bede Walsh continues to be arrogantly dismissive of his guilt, and won’t co-operate in rehabilitation, and so he will do the vast majority of the 22 years he was given. No doubt he’ll feel suitably justified and vindicated

Mmmm? I’m surprised he didn’t get longer. It means he will do probably 6 years inside. It won’t be fun for him, but that’s what he needs. I guess Longley will, if he has not already done so, start the process of having him laicised. I wonder how he got away with it for so long. Who knew ? What was known ? Why was he treated as someone who needed help and treatment in the first instance, rather than recognising that this man was a threat. I wonder what Vinny’s, and his VG’s at the time, response would be ?

A model priest, denying his guilt despite overwhelming evidence and causing his victims further trauma. He probably had a mental reservation.
If Elsie had any decency she would have resigned after IICSA, especially with his documented history of threatening objective reporters to put his own interests first. But of course he is another model cleric whose arrogance makes him hang on for dear life. Hopefully the press will chase the blame for this one back to where it belongs.
Elsie, resign now. You deserve a further ignominious fall and retirement in disgrace.

One small correction: the 1937 constitution did not declare Catholicism the state religion of the Republic of Ireland. It recognised the ‘special position’ of Catholicism in society. That was removed somtime in the 1970’s. It would be against the nature of a Republic to have a state religion. It one of the reasons why I get annoyed that the Anglican church here keeps insisting on being called the ‘church of Ireland’: it was disestablished in 1870.

Are you really the gullible fool you seem? Euphemism is part of the stock-in-trade of politicians. And if the politicians are deferential Roman Catholics, like the spineless De Velara in that time, then euphemism will meet mental reservation to create the perfect storm of verbal subterfuge.

What the bloody hell do you think ‘special position’ of Roman Catholicism in the Free State/Republic of Ireland meant if not ‘state religion’ by euphemism-cum-mental reservation?

Ireland was on the verge of being a failed state at that time, poverty, mass emigration and starvation. It devolved its social services to the church because it was unable to provide them itself. The state, and Fianna Fail who were in power for much of this time, deserve as much blame as the church. Amy has hired new spin doctors to try to spin his way out of any blame. He would be better off telling the truth. Jack Lynch bankrupted us, then Bertie Aherne and now Mehole Martin is doing it again.

Absolutely spot on.
Although technically the mons veneris isn’t the vagina it’s the fatty lump above the vagina that is visible when you see a woman from the front in underwear. Nowadays it’s medically referred to as mons pubis.

Thank you for the clarification.

Mc Quaid’s problem was the closeness of the “fatty lump” to the vagina.

Of course, Bp Pat, it wasn’t just RC schools in the north or south that “experienced terror, physical and emotional,” I think it was part of the norm in state schools in Britain too during the 1950s/1960s whether they were Catholic or non-denominational.

Like

9:10am

You’re right it was the norm at that time not just in Ireland and Britain but all over. I think the word terror is a bit over the top, it’s just the way it was. And most of us who lived through it never gave it a thought, I never felt terrified and believe me I was belted plenty of times, you never told your parents as you would have been told, you must have needed it, and risked an other belt. Of course you have some people with their own anti-Catholic agenda that now try to say it was only Catholic schools and Institutions that as they say “terror” existed they are liars it was everywhere.

I watched the interview with + Martin, all of it. I have to say that I think he did better than I expected. I don’t like the style, or the voice, or the doe eyes or the thin lips, but – hey, you can’t have everything ! Nevertheless, on most of the substantial matters I think he answered clearly, directly and honestly. I agree that there was a drift to trying to lasso in pretty much anybody else that might have had some connection to what was going on. He’s factually correct, but in this kind of interview he should not be seen to try and deflect the blame attributable to the Catholic Church by trying to move some of it on to others. It’s a classic technique. + Nichols does it all the time when talking about abuse, reminding his listeners that the majority of abuse goes on in the home, in an attempt to put the abuse he is connected with in to some kind of diminished proportion. They shouldn’t do that. It detracts from their credibility and honesty. Other than that I think + Martin did okay. It was always going to be a difficult gig for him.

Let’s not shed any tears for the alien planters who came to Ireland, seized everything, drove people off their land, stole their churches and almost wiped out their language and culture. They are as bad as the other British people who went to America, Africa and Oceania to steal and destroy. Will they ever apologise for that?

Their mouthpiece the Irish Times would not have a Catholic editor or even journalist, companies such as Guinness and Jacobs were anti-Catholic, the Anglicans stole the two cathedrals in Dublin and did the same across the country. The only Catholics who lived in those big Georgian houses in Dublin were the live-in domestic servants.

The Protestants secured the presidency in Ireland while Stormont was persecuting Catholics.

Protestant schools in the ROI are more generously funded than Catholic schools there.

And to cap it all, Irish Protestants live longer.

It’s that independent mindset of theirs; it encourages them actually to THINK, and for themselves.

My own view would be that true justice would involve rather more than has already been offered. I don’t think there are signs from the church of genuine contrition nor signs of any willingness to examine the church’s own position of power and reconsider what that means. I must say I didn’t see this interview.

I see Arlene Foster was on the radio this morning. It was bit early in the morning to be subjected to her agriculture tones. Every time she appears, she is strident, aggressive, unforgiving, unbending, inflexible, argumentative, partisan – you get the picture ? I can’t for a moment think how she is helping at all in trying to find constructive, cooperative and respectful solutions to the difficult problems. Mind you the Shinners aren’t much better. Part of the conversation this morning was about a border poll. I have to tell you from this side of the Irish Sea, we Little Englanders really don’t view Northern Irelanders as British at all. They are, first of all Northern Irelanders, a rather strange and endangered species. Secondly, we would think of them as Irish, and would have no problem with them being part of the Republic. Mostly, we just think of Northern Irelanders of all kinds as a problem. They cause difficulties about pretty much everything, have done for ages, cost us a huge amount of money, and still want to blame it all on us. I’m not even sure the Republic would want them – it would just bring them grief. So, maybe the solution is for them to become independent and completely run their own affairs, and get out of our hair. Ah, I feel better for having got that off my chest ! Now, I’ll put on my helmet and body armour in anticipation of the grief I will be getting from the NI quarter.

@9:49: Your perspective reflects my own experience from living a long time in England. I offer my own perceptions and would value others, and objective corrections.

At one time, Britain, (referred to by some as the “mainland”) needed and valued N. Ire. to help protect shipping routes West. That no longer applies. Centuries previously, Britain “planted” N. Ire. with its own, (shorthand historical code for widespread confiscation of land to “reward” its armed forces).
But unlike previous similar “plantations” , (think “Kings County and Queens County” for Leix and Offaly), the Ulster settlers did not integrate with the native Irish, but clung to a narrow minded stubborn Presbyterian, Calvinist ideology from their native Scottish roots. They have retained this and have always viewed all movement towards equality with the “No Surrender ” battlecry. Their “country” the Wee North of just six of the historical Ulster province, was devised to ensure what they thought would be a perpetual “Protestant state for a Protestant people.”
Misguidedly, they still think British politicians value their loyal links and even when “shat upon” by Boris & Co, still delude themselves is trying to retain a long departed hegemony in N. Ireland.
It’s a cause for concern that some of their small minded leaders, could potentially lead a hard core , Trump like, into rabble like behaviour as in the days of Ian Paisley snr.

It remains to be seen how long “Westminster ” will endure the “burden” of Norn Iron.

How do you think that the Romanists managed to hold together, by and large, deferential obedience to priests for so very long? Through preaching tirelessly on the love and the saving power of Christ? No; because this would have made Catholics lean on God rather than on Romanist clergy.
These snake-oil salesmen, priests, instead stressed sacramental grace (which, of course, only the Romanists themselves could administer) and damnation through mortal sin. It was the perfect combination of problem (eternal damnation) and remedy (sacramental reception) which kept Catholics bound to these schysters for generations, men who deliberately stood in the way of Christ, and who had themselves lionised as saviours by default.
This is the great historical con-trick of Romanism, and it worked for a very long time indeed, until the social changes of the 20th century (especially the wider provision of secondary and tertiary education) transported Catholics from their locked medieval mindset about the Church of Rome into modernity. Education, quite literally, set people on the road to freedom from this institution, for it taught them truth as a UNIVERSAL principle rather than as a grubby, sectarian franchise.

Think rcc lost their track after 400 A. D. Realised lot of healings took place in jesus time when there were no churches, no buildings as it all took place outside. Jesus healed people outside as I was left wondering why do we need church buildings for healing ?
A healer deceased now was telling Catholics and non Catholics that rcc was teaching the wrong way. Thus people were taught wrong thus no healing etc blah blah. But it made sense when I heard. That healer now deceased healed people in hotel with no priest, no mass instead of inside church. I’m starting to think that rcc is a big con isn’t? Big deception lie or what is it?

Like

DG. You say, “I’m beginning to think .” Wise words: yes it is indeed a massive con operated by fraudsters making a fine living out of it.
Some might consider it less of a fraud if it only conned the naive out of money. They might consider that less evil on account of the (misplaced) succour it gives to some.
But the reality that it places itself in a position of both worldly power, and sole alleged conduit to eternal succour, and in so doing abuses this position by evil and grossly immoral behaviour towards naive children renders it doubly repulsive.

I repeat what I have said here before. How can any intelligent right thinking person believe that abusive clerics really believe in the religious teachings they profess and represent 🤔?
Responding to the question asking what the supposed ontological change is: I’d say it’s an admission to the Con Club.

Criticism and questioning of the RCC is legitimate in relation to a pervasive institution that claims the perogative of organising our lives, ordering our thoughts, and claims power over us even after death. Not even North Korea goes that far!
What’s so special about the RCC that its claims cannot be questioned? That some regard questioning and valid criticism as hate speech appears to indicate a certain fragility .

Yes I’m starting to think it’s a big con or huge deception con coming from RCC. That awakening came about long ago in small steps but healer from Belfast sort of opened up my eyes re rcc. I was bleeding on and off as doctors couldn’t find it. So I met him up in six counties. I was astonished when bleeding stopped when I said a specific prayer given by him. I was saying to myself, if rcc can’t do this healing then what’s the point of going to their church. Also he said healing took place in jesus time when there were NO churches except for jews at that time. Jesus healed people outside of the church makes me wonder and think. He (healer) criticised rcc for teaching the wrong way as he’s Catholic but now deceased. If you were taught wrong way by rcc then you won’t get healed. Healing exists outside
rcc church as you don’t have to go to church inside in order to get it. Then I bought his book called ‘miracle ship’ as it was quite interesting given my religious education which was v little, practically very little understanding. Even though confirmed without any proper religion education. CBS along with Vincentian priests taught us v little really.

It was starting point when I met him as I began to understand more re rcc big con or their deception of lies cos some priests or religious priest or Bishop or cardinal out there who don’t believe JC and they still practice their ministry which is nothing short of hypocrisy.

I respect your position as athetist but I believe in God but not rcc. God exists for me personally. I met a monk long ago in mt Melleray as I experienced his healing power which can only come from God as I was stunned. That’s my experience of God. I won’t go back to Mt Melleray until that head abbot is gone elsewhere or in lay state.

Rcc is like a very big business organisation with many tentacles all over the world. It’s a spy network if you like. They had all the info on you or me or any Catholic as that was Catholic Ireland of 1937 to 2000. Their deception was that they profess to believe in God or JC but in reality they do not. Their main interest is money of course in order to keep up their other lifestyle. I just feel sorry for good and genuine priests who believes in God but have no sway with their bishops. Did they protest to their own bishops re kids abuses? If they did, they would be sent to very isolated rural location. I knew of one priest long ago when he was sent there as I didn’t understand it that time but now I do. The key issue is education education cos people would start to understand more of rcc deception and question them even they don’t like it.

5.01: You, Pat, lead people astray. You stand for error. You are an idiot. I suppose you’d give your few followers the Queer Bible too!! Truths of the Catholic Church are in the Catechism. You should reacquaint yourself wuth it instead of making up sham teachings…

I have never seen or read the Queer Bible.

And I wish they printed the Catechism on softer paper so it would be truly useful 😁

7.55: MMM – I have no difficulty with your questioning of the RCC. I appreciate your perspectives much of the time. I too question much of what I inherited but I retain what I hope is “the essence” of true GOSPEL ideals, albeit with difficulty. I value the honourable virtues and ideals of my parents which I try to imitate. At times though you are quite gleeful and delighted in insulting with generalised wrong, unfair portrayals of (all) priests. As for 7.24: Sorry if sharing my parent’s ideals and values and trying to imbibe them in my life offends your spiritual sensitivities!! Modesty – I’m trying!

Thanks@8:53. Pleased to see you’re following the true gospel ideals, for in essence, they are derived from preceding principles, also referred to as The Golden Rule, “Do as you would be done by.” That also sums up what Humanists have acknowledged as key to how we ought to conduct ourselves.
It allows us to cast aside all the extra crap religiosity put forward by clerics and their self serving institutions.

6.28: Truly, astonishingly ignorant is a more apt way to describe Pat’s views. What kind of dickhead is he to spout his catechism of hatred, vengeance and nastiness.. I’m sure Pat finds many uses for his loo paper..especially when, in these days of the pandemic, he has nothing useful to do.!!!

‘What kind of dickhead is he (Pat) to spout his catechism of hatred, vengeance and nastiness?’

Dickhead?😞

Seriously?😕

Well, if you really want to know, I suppose it would make him the kind of dickhead that would ask such a question of anyone with the hateword ‘dickhead’ in it and not realise the shoot-footing irony of including it. 😅

Oooohhh, touchy, touchy, dear @7:51. Is it your Peter ? Anyhow, lots of funerals means lots of little brown envelopes. Maybe he knows which side his bread is buttered on ?

+Leo will not move from Edinburgh to Glasgow. Why move from one Archdiocese to another? He will be off to Rome within the next 3 years and has already been told it will be as Cardinal. None of the existing Scottish Bishops have a pair of balls between them. Nobody has been able to fill Tom Winning’s boots and nobody ever will. Simples. If Peter Smith was wel, he would have been a great candidate for Glasgow. It will be between Hugh Gilbert, Bill Nolan and Hugh Bradley. Mark my words.

Like

Jardine you are correct NO one will every fill Cardinal Thomas Joseph Winnings boot however the part you have correct is + Cushley will be a cardinal for Scotland based in Glasgow.
+ Gilbert is 69 and Glasgow maybe too much for him, + Nolan has heart trouble, Hugh Bradley does not have the health and would be an insult to other Bishops.
We took your word that Hugh Bradley would be Principle Concelebrant at + Tartaglia’s funeral and was wrong + gilbert came from Aberdeen.
As a stop gap they may place + Gilbert in Glashow for few years then + Keenan or +McGee.
They moved Nicholls from Birmingham to Westminster..

Thanks. I did get the Chief Celebrant at the Mass for Philip wrong. Apologies for that. I knew Hugh Bradley was going to be there and was told Hugh Gilbert was wanting to as President of Bishop’s Conference but he was awaiting Scottish Govt clearance to travel so far to attend. It came through at the last minute. I can’t imagine Winning or Keith allowing a Bishop to be President of the Conference! Leo stood but came third in the vote.

You write as if you have inside information, which is ridiculous. Get a grip, please. You do not fool us. Some of know Hugh rather better than you. And predicting a red hat is laughable, nothing less. Oh dear.

In England they moved Heenan from Liverpool to Westminster and Peter Smith Ab of Cardiff to Southwark.
My mother refers to Bp Keenan of Paisley as Fulton Sheen. An American prelate who couldn’t resist the cameras. Look at me everybody!

Talking through your hat. As if Cushley would tell you he’s been told that. No one knows who Francis will appoint cardinal. His appointments are unpredictable and that’s the way he operates. He appears to want to break any sense of automatic entitlement of a particular see. Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Armagh, Venice, etc.

Jardine @9-20
Hugh Gilbert was not the Chief Celebrant at Philips Funeral Mass. He was the Presider.
Keep up Sir

Just thought I’d share this link to Bishop Sheen giving a talk on the evil one, called: The Devil & the Diabolical (link at bottom).
Is it possible we don’t pay enough attention to that which is evil?
When thinking, or praying against, evil should we be alert to evil in form of an entity, conscious or force – the Devil?
Most certainly–if you believe in God, anyway.
—-
We can be sure that evil exists — and we know “it” wonders round seeking to devour and destroy the innocent and cause as much disharmony confusion as possibke; and “it” will do this right where God’s peace, love and harmony exists.
“It” – evil – comes in both the male and female form — and don’t we know it…
—-
Our Lord, Himself, spoke of the Devil.
Our Lord was clear: He warned us to beware of “Wolves dressed in sheep’s’ clothing.”
… Clerical clothing? …You’re damn right!

Humankind has created the “devil ” as an evil entity trying to inveigle us into “wrong” decisions of harmful behaviour. In psychological terms, we engage in what Freud described as projection and displacement . In simple terms, we humans project our own internal instincts onto another entity as a salve for our own failings and consequent feelings of guilt. It’s a handy “get out of jail” excuse for the human weaknesses we all possess.

Pope Francis’ next and what could well be final consistory will in all likelihood create Eamon Martin a cardinal.
Of course this does leave us with the somewhat surreal prospect of the newly elevated Cardinal Martin being elected Supreme Pontiff at the conclave that will follow Pope Francis’ death.
Bizarre? Stranger things have certainly happened in the course of the history of the Papacy.
