CLERICAL DOUBLE LIVES – THE COST.

We know that many priests are living double lives when it comes to celibacy and chastity.

In past times many priests broke their celibacy vows with women by having long term affairs, one off flings, fathering children, procuring abortions or indeed by seducing parishioners.

As the priesthood has become increasingly gay, priests leading double lives often start having gay sex in the seminary. After ordination they continue to use gay apps like Grindr and meet many men for sex meets.

Priests have gay sex with other priests, seminarians, lay men.

Some priests, like Richard Purcell, go to gay saunas. Other priests go to open air cruising places.

Some priests are into the more extreme end and fetishes like BDSM and “Fisting”.

THE COSTS:

1. The first cost is to the priest himself. He is living a double life and that is never good – spiritually, psychologically, socially or ecclesiastically. Such a priest is living a dysfunctional life and it leads to spiritual schizophrenia – unless the priest is a sociopath and does not have a conscience. Sociopathic priests do, sadly, exist. And they act out this sociopathy in various ways – alcohol or drug abuse, abuse of power, abuse of parishioners in various ways, theft of parish funds and in many other ways.

2. The second cost is to the faith of ordinary Catholics. Very many Catholics have stopped practising after their faith was shaken by the ongoing procession of clerical scandal after clerical scandal.

These Catholics, shocked by clerical scandals, don’t always find a new spiritual home and simply allow their faith and spirituality to die. The misbehaving priests are destroying people’s faith and their trust in God.

3. The third cost is to the Church. The Church itself is seen as more and more corrupt. Vocations decline or disappear. Church income depletes. The Church’s local and international reputation is destroyed.

And all this gives rise to a deeper and more angry anti clericalism.

CELIBACY AND CHASTITY.

I think the Roman insistence on celibacy for all priests is a ridiculous.

A person can have a call to priesthood and not have the call to celibacy.

A person can have a call to priesthood and a call to marriage.

The celibacy law is based on a totally outdated view of human sexuality that puts virginity above the value of love expressed by human intimacy.

But as long as the Roman Church insists on celibacy being the price of admission to priesthood those who know they cannot be celibacy should not enter it.

And those priests, who, after ordination, realise they can not live celibacy shoukd resign from priesthood.

At the very least they should inform the bishop that they are not celibate and put the ball in his court.

Doing this shows sincerity and authenticity.

But to live the double life is not acceptable, not authentic and not moral.

And, if enough priests stood up it might very well help to change the celibacy law.

Double lives are destructive on so many levels.

For me the issue is not sex. I could not care what consenting adults do with their sexual drives and bits, how they use them, where they put them etc. That is their business, and they are free to do what they want as long as it is not abusive and coercive and is within the law. We are, happily, increasingly in an age of post sexual morality. That is a good thing. The issue for me with regard to the clerical cadre is one of honesty and integrity. In any other walk of life and professionalism with which I engage, if I know that what I am being told and what I know is the reality diverge so greatly, then I cannot have any faith or trust in the person who has such a divergence in the reality of their lives and in what they pretend to be and tell me they are. It is the same with the priest on the altar in my church. Just by being there, by being ordained and being a priest, he is screaming out that he is celibate and chaste. If the reality of his life diverges from that, then a wrecking ball has been taken to any integrity and honesty of life that he has. There is no way out of that. + Pat has described the effects of such duplicity for both the individual, others, the Church and the priesthood. Popes and bishops and priests need to realise this. If they let the situation continue the priesthood will become increasingly undermined, irrelevant and dismissed as dysfunctional. The current situation and practice is existential for the priesthood. If they don’t wake up and sort this out – again + Pat has outlined a few courses of action – then it will be curtains for the priesthood. One problem within the clergy and episcopal ranks is the “chumocracy” that exists, whereby priests believe that they must accept, even condone, the misbehaviour of their brother priests, and are reluctant to wield the axe. By ignoring or avoiding this issue they are sharpening the axe for their own necks.

It doesn’t matter what YOU think of consenting adults doing whatever they like with appendages; YOUR opinion doesn’t amount to the proverbial hill of beans.

God’s opinion does, however. And HE does care.

Well, let’s hope your are keeping your hands off your bits, and especially off others’ bits , if that’s the case ! I very much doubt that God really does care. It’s just something you and others have cooked up over the centuries to keep control over others. Go on, have a go- get your hands on your bits…..!

Anon 10.19, are you speaking out of a burning bush?
Nobody has the right to put words into the mouth of God. Only one generation ago religious sisters tried the same as the tortured single mothers, religious brothers did it while beating children – all in the name of salvation. Only god knows what happened those brothers and sisters.

I presume you are a lay person.
Lay teachers were every bit as bad and worse.

Excuse me?
Where did I even hint at torture in my post at 10.19?
You really must control your imagination. Some 10 year olds have more self-control.

Can’t we all just settle on one, universal fact? That Roman Catholicism makes arch-hypocrites of its members?

I mean look at the Cathbots who post here: wishing that others ‘die roarin’ ‘, or to be ‘toast’ when they die (in Hell).

These are the ‘good’ Catholics, like ‘good’ priests we keep hearing of.

Question. Your co-worker is your boss. They are married but having an affair. Do you confront them about their dishonesty?

If you are aware of it, then you are complicit by silence. Like all the so-called ‘good’ priests who looked the other way when they caught, or otherwise knew of, colleagues raping or sodomising children.
Pat Buckley only recently disclosed on the blog that he told one or both parties in such a relatiinship that if they wouldn’t disclose their infidelity, he would to the affected person.
There’s integrity for you.
PS if you were hoping for an answer to your query from a Roman Catholic priest, you were naive: these guys and integrity are strangers to each other.

My favourite bible story is the one where Jesus is caught in flagrante delicto with the woman caught in adultery and says, ‘You don’t catch the Methodists having it off, you hate me’ before shuffling himself off to a new parish over the border. But not before spending three years in the Beverly Hills clinic for clergy where they learn not to get caught out.

Do you think that’s what Roreee has been doing in London ? Learning not to get caught out ? Then to come back to Armagh and be welcomed back in to the bosom of + Amy ?

We all live double lives. It is part of the syllabub we call ‘the human condition’. The question is this, ‘How, with honesty, can we live an authentic life.’ That is the lifelong dilemma we all face.’

I think the problem lies in the concepts “sacrament” and “communion” whose underlying reality has gone through big changes very lately, and literal misinterpretations of “bread” (albeit bread breaking ceremonies were custom pre-BC), and knock-on confusion around confection and smarties. Until recently God made sure the “system” worked better than it “should”. Pre-JP II, over half of most parish congregations “didn’t go up”, affording tactful cover for politicians.

Oh, God! Here we go with the early 1970s buzzwords.😕

What in Hades does ‘authentic life’ mean?😧

What a pretentious crock!😨

I think terms like the human condition are very valid terms.
