DERMOT FARRELL, A DIE HARD SUPPORTER OF MAYNOOTH IS ON COURSE TO OVERTURN DIARMUID MARTIN’S REJECTION OF MAYNOOTH.

Farrell is steeped in Maynooth and Maynooth mania.
He studied for the priesthood in Maynooth.
He taught in Maynooth.
He was in Maynooth when his cousin, Maynooth President Micheal Ledwith was grooming and abusing first year seminarians.
He help the posts of executive assistant to the president, vice president and president in Maynooth.
And like all the clerical old Maynooth-ians he resented DM taking his seminarians out of Maynooth over “strange-goings-ons”.
And now Maynooth has THEIR man in Dublin.
I imagine that if Dublin gets any new seminarians Farrell will send them straight to Maynooth.
It begs the question – did Farrell know about the grooming and sexual assault of seminarians during his time in Maynooth.
Did he know what his cousin Ledwith was up to?
Was he the bishop’s watcher and fixer of the Ledwith problem?
If so, are Ossory and Dublin his rewards?
I guarantee you one thing – if he did he will never admit it.
I envisage that we will see the following from Farrell:
1. Full support of Maynooth.
2. Full agreement with the other bishops on everything – unlike Diarmuid.
3. The closing of parishes for monatery reasons only.
4. Conservative public statements on social and sexual issues.
Could we even see Farrell welcoming Deacon Byrne back?

Pat, The Clergy of Dublin are emerging from 16 years of an Archbishop who by his own admission never wanted to come to Dublin – he far preferred the cozy world of careerism in Roman circles. In Dublin he did prove a force majeure in the child abuse drama and won the hearts of the media, for that he deserves some praise. But even this is tainted by his willingness to defame others in his desire to be seen as squeaky clean – Ask Bishops Walsh and Field.
However that is his sole claim to fame for his tenure. He was a cowardly autocrat who never downfaced his opponents preferring to sidestep all confrontation – the hallmark of a true bully.
His successor has an opportunity to rebuild a relationship with the clergy – but he better tread carefully. The old guard are still in the wings – and Dermot Farrell should take with a pinch of salt any analysis of problems in Dublin presented to him. He needs to accept nothing they tell him and get out there and meet the priests and people in any troublesome scenario. There are those who will lay traps for him hoping that he will take the bait – he really needs to be careful. He must not accept the analysis of the old guard who did nothing to resolve the problems and who would delight in him stumbling on land mines. He is now in a vipers nest in Drumcondra and those fawning over him would as soon see his downfall.
Dermot – be careful you walk among wolves.

It is a horrendous time and very challenging too for priests. It is interesting to observe that many older religious sisters and priests are returned missionaries. I know of one women’s religious order who lost 6 sisters in last 10 days: all worked as missionaries and a male religious order lost 8 in past fortnight, most of whom wirked as missionaries…It is so sad. Let us pray for one another these days.

Dermot Farrell is a businessman not a leader.. a pinstriped filofax archbishop.. a company man… he stepped all over Ossory on his way up the greasy poll. He will do nothing for the church in Dublin.. he knows all the secrets of Maynooth. He presided over the whole stinking thing and saved Maynooth from sinking. He did this by financially selling knighthoods / damehoods and medals of St. Patrick for hard cash.. dollars..the rock bottom being the honouring of Sophia Casey wife of William T Casey, Ronald Reagan’s CIA Chief!! Everywhere in Maynooth you see her name.. Farrell has now got his reward.. hoping he can now as ceo of Dublin save the diocese.. a most un Francis type appointment.. but looking at Irish Episcopal bench.. we have reached the bottom of the barrel…

I omitted Kilfenora as it will be a casualty of a long title. It’s no more than a prelature now in the eyes of the Vatican. And in reality it’s a cluster of parishes in North Clare (I’m Clareman myself so not knocking the place). It’s name will just be dropped most likely in favour of bolting on Clonfert at the end.

It will take more than a name change to sort the problems in the Diocese of Galway. It has haemorrhaged it’s more junior clergy in the last few years. Add to that the favoured few who can do no wrong, and, not content with that, they destroy those they see as the opposition. It’s not a nice place.

Stop giving donations to the church until they change their behavior.
Strip them powerless such as no more media interviews cis they DON’T speak for me.
let us say media don’t publish them and ignore them making them feel more irrelevant.
Publish what’s necessary such ex Bishop casey, cos of their double lives and hypocrisy views. Exposure is the key here, shining the spotlight on them. Maximum publicity that’s PR 101.
Just wondering aloud, are some bishops here leading secret homosexual lives? I have nothing against them if they choose it but they shoukd ve open with their donators (lay people of his parish).

So, a new found task for Bishop Pat: Bishop Dis-Courager. No Barnabas here, sadly. If only Pat could find it in his heart to even express good wishes, acknowledge the challenge, offer a prayer, be kind, see the positives with our new Archbishop, it would be a more commendable and virtuous approach to Archbishop Farrell. Surely being an “encourager” is at the core of being a Catholic Christian Leader and Archbishop or any Bishop? I wish The Archbishop every success in the challenges ahead. Pulling and knocking people down before they have even begun s totally against gospel imperatives – totally UN-CHRIST-LIKE. Totally. Please Pat, desist from creating false, baseless narratives.

Somebody said on here a few days ago that Farrell was not a man to be messed with. Perhaps. But, Farrell needs to realise that it cannot be business as usual. The days of an archbishop autocratically delivering edicts from on high, even if he claims that he is talking for the Church in his position as alter Christus, have long since gone. He might do so and feel better for himself, but he needs to realise that for the most part a rapidly decreasing number of people are listening, especially if Farrell bangs on about the usual issues that we now believe that we will make up our own minds – relationships, marriage, sexuality etc etc. He needs to realise that he is now only listened to uncritically by a very small, and rapidly reducing, group. For the rest of us, we will give him a courteous listening, but we will make up our own minds about our lives and our society and take in to account a whole range of other voices in doing so. This is something that Farrell has to take on board. If he wants to have any influence, I suggest he rethinks how he imagines his position and his influence, as well as the issues that we are prepared to let him lecture about. He needs a huge lesson in clerical and episcopal humility, realising that he has no automatic right to tell us what to do and expect us to do it. He needs to listen to the things that are important to us and contribute to that conversation rather than believing that he can shape and direct the conversation simply by virtue of the fact that he is the archbishop. In addition, he needs to sort out his own clerical backyard, not necessarily by becoming a more autocratic and disciplinarian, but by ensuring that the people he ordains as priests are pastoral and holy, rather than men who are essentially playing the system and living a duplicitous, dishonest, dysfunctional and damaging clerical culture and lifestyle. Once he’s done that, then we might be a bit more inclined to listen to him a on other issues.

I am a priest of Ossory and I wish to speak a word in defense of Dermot Farrell. Without doubt he is a decisive man, a plain speaker with a sharp intellect and judgment. He expects his priests to work and will support them in that work. He detests slackers who treat priesthood as a meal ticket. He can be abrasive but is open to dialogue. He did a good job here in Kilkenny mopping up after the last disastrous man. I think he will do well in Dublin and the priests should suspend judgment until he begins to make his mark. He is kind to those in trouble and that counts for a lot. He will answer correspondence which will make a change in Dublin, and he will grasp nettles – he is not one to kick to touch.

Saluti, Patricio. Farrell stood by while Maynooth maltreated many good young men, and many not so young men. He is The Keeper of Maynooth Secrets. I see in his installation pictures the backdrop is often the hand-painted coat of arms of the Dublin diocese – the irony being that the heraldry was neatly painted by a seminarian who was the protégé of John Flaherty when John was Adm of the Pro-Cathedral. I was reminded yesterday that the seminarian painter was the former IRA bomber who was kicked out of Maynooth when Farrell was President and Martin was AB. If cloth could talk! A presto!
