Joseph Quigley, a former national education advisor for Roman Catholic schools, sexually and physically abused a boy while he was a parish priest at a church near Warwick.

Father Joseph Quigley – described as a “sexual sadist” – rubbed the teenager’s inner thigh after making him wear gym kit, take showers with the door open, and inflicted ‘sado-masochistic’ punishments on him such as locking him in the church’s crypt.
He also beat the boy with a hurling stick during his time at St Charles Borromeo RC church in Hampton-on-the-Hill near Warwick.
The offences took place while he was the parish priest at the church from 2002 until he was forced to resign in disgrace, a jury at Warwick Crown Court heard.
Quigley, 56, now of Aston Hall, Church Lane, Stone in Staffordshire, denied four charges of sexual activity with a child, two of sexual assault, two of false imprisonment and one of cruelty.
But the jury took less than four hours to find him guilty of all nine charges by majority verdicts of 11-1.
Describing the perverted priest as “a sexual sadist and voyeur”, Judge Peter Cooke remanded him in custody while a report is prepared on him to assess the danger he poses in the future.

While few seriously believe that he was guilty of sexual abuse, the question remains as to why was Spud not placed on Administrative Leave as soon as these allegations were received? This is the usual procedure when any allegation, however outlandish, is made (it happened in the summer with a well-known and much-loved priest in central London who was removed from his parish overnight – only to be restored to it three months later). I’m told the poor man was nearly driven to suicide. No, it seems there is one law for those at the top and in the Magic Circle and another for those unfortunate enough not to be in the inner circle of Nichols’s pets. In fact the Murphy O Connor police activity was all covered up by Nichols who did not want to embarrass the Church and his predecessor. There is also the aggravating factor that Pope Francis may well had leaned on Nichols; a more disturbing fact if proven as it would show a foreign state trying to interfere in the internal affairs of the UK.

More worryingly, and bringing this mess right up to date, is the hitherto undisclosed fact that Fr Joseph Quigley lived with Archbishop Nichols, in his own home, as his guest, after he had returned for treatment for sexual sadism and an attraction to teenage boys. This was while Nichols was Archbishop of Westminster, and gives lie to the claim of Cardinal Nichols that he had left Birmingham before Quiqley’s crimes came to light. This scandal is well known by the priests of Birmingham and Westminster and has been the subject of much comment as to why it hasn’t been picked up by the press. Nichols was aware, and more than likely was protecting a close friend, one of his own inner circles of advisers from the Catholic Education Service. In a footnote that would be comic is it weren’t so serious Quigley was responsible for producing the Bishop’s Sex Education policies and programmes for schools, where youngsters where being encouraged to discover their sexuality from an early age! A sex offender going around schools teaching children about sex! If this does not force Nichols and his ghastly sidekick out, what will”?

God does not respond to anything that does not come from HIS spirit (his life) within a person. It is why Jesus referred to the Pharisees as ‘Fools!’ and ‘hypocrites’, despite their loquacious prayers, and elaborate rituals. They thought that they were morally righteous because of things they performed. (And ‘performed’ is the appropriate word here.) They did not pray because they could not pray. And this is because they did not have God’s spirit in them. It is this spirit that prompts and animates actual prayer; all other forms are self-deluding fakes.
If you are familiar with that other poster’s comments on the blog, then you know, without having had to be told, that he does not possess God’s spirit. Anyone who habitually wishes people to ‘roast’ or to be ‘toast’ in Hell, or who wishes another to die ‘roarin’ ‘, cannot have God’s spirit, and therefore cannot actually pray. If they cannot pray, then logically, they cannot believe, except as a delusion, that God will answer their ‘prayers’.

Just had a look at the Greek text of James. It confirms the author’s understanding that δίψυχος (Jam 1:8) ‘double minded’ is his term for praying and not believing that prayer is heard.
For the third time, the word is used to mean someone who is irresolute and who doubts the efficacy of their prayer. Looking back over this thread, the original poster whom you attacked expressed no hesitation whatsoever in the fact that his prayer would be heard.
It was you who introduced the English translation of the term, albeit fundamentally misunderstanding it yourself.

If Nichols is emailing priests with barely veiled threats concerning this blog, then he is clearly rattled. That suggests to me that it is more than just the issue of being talked about and being made fun of. It is very likely a response to something that he knows has elements of fact and truth in it. I know from my intelligence that Nichols, at least during his time in Birmingham, had a very hands on approach to his priests who found themselves in trouble, especially because of sexual abuse matters. That seems counter cultural to what we have heard of Nichols in his dealing with his priests in Westminster. In Birmingham he was very supportive of them as they went through the process. This could be because he genuinely had some pastoral concern for them, or it could have been some misguided sense of clerical loyalty to the clergy band of brothers, or it could have been a way of waving two fingers at those who had the temerity to uncover what his priests were up to. Each of those, in the circumstances, was somewhat ill-advised. Given that, I tend to think that the on-going Quigley contact sounds as though it has a grain of truth in it. Perhaps as an act of carrying out all three of those motivations. If so, then there are some serious questions to be asked about Nichols judgement in this matter. If I were advising him, I would get the facts out there asap, and get ahead of the game, difficult and problematic though that might for him at present. In the end, this sort of stuff will bring about his fall. Or preferably, and much more painlessly, I’d do a quick move over to Chiswick with Sister Wragg and settle in to retirement. Then the problem will go away for him. However, threatening people, remaining resolutely and arrogantly silent about these matters, and remaining in Ambrosden Avenue, are not going to turn out particularly well for Nichols. So, + Vincent, if you or one of your underlings is monitoring this blog, I suggest that you might think seriously about my advice.

On a more gentle note, one of the good ones in Birmingham, Canon Giles Goward RIP, is to be mourned and buried this morning in Oscott. He died aged 55. He was recently appointed Rector when his predecessor, + Oakley, moved to Northampton. Giles, in his early years of priesthood was + Nichols’ priest secretary. Giles truly was one of the good, holy, kind and yet characterful priests. He would have had his work cut out in Oscott, but I bet he would have done a wonderful job if he had been given the time.

So I was surprised, and I mean genuinely surprised that an ex-religious friend of mine was prosecuted for child sexual offenses. They were historic. Knowing a life in vows was not for him he had left religious life well before the allegations were made. He knew it had been a mistake for him to enter such a life, but culture and influence had placed him on the wrong track in life.
Back in the laity he lived a good life. I genuinely knew nothing about these dark secrets.
All in all he served about 3 years. Out he came, rightly marked by his horrible history. But still a human he had to start life again. He stayed some months with me secured employment and then lodgings.
I don’t know about Elsie. I don’t know about his visitors. But did Jesus not say ‘I was imprisoned and you visited me”? There is a sentence for every crime, but can people not then reform and move on, albeit with a horrible shadow?

12.15: I can name someone in particular: Pat Buckley. This man preaches mercy, compassion and Gospel living in his homilies. And I know he has visited criminals of all shades in prison and helped many rehabilitate from his home in Larne. I’m certain that Pat has housed potentially dangerous pwrsons before and after prison. If he has, it’s the gospel imperative. Good. and commendable. However, when someone other than he does similarly, they are condemned as enablers or co-abuser. We can and must condemn the sin, always, but not crush the offender. Not are we, as followers of Christ, to engage in lynch mob justice. Offering pastoral assistance to a person who has previously been in ‘trouble’ and punished by the authorities is quite different from hiding a paedophile from the authorities and perverting the course of justice to protect the abuser and the institution from being caught out.

I would prefer to see a discerning approach in comments about the See of Westminster. Remember there are 3 auxiliary bishops, Bishop John Sherrington, Bishop Nicholas Hudson and Bishop Paul McAleenan. All are extraordinarily able in their different fields, blending Westminster into a fine diocese. Archbishop Vincent simply does the strategic work and, of course, fulfils his duty at the strategic level. In effect, the auxiliaries run the diocese and they do so with great courage and commitment. We should recognise this fully. My sincere plea is for commentators to desist from hurting, even slandering these auxiliary bishops. Many thanks.

I can’t help but be disappointed with the jaundiced views about the Westminster auxiliaries. Archbishop Vincent, as with so many celibates, seems to have suppressed what might have flowered within his personality. Control has become the major personality trait. And, yes, John Sherrington has a good mind but, again, his personality is not lively. Nothing at all wrong with Hudson or his colleague. Please do not criticise them without good reason.

I agree with 12.24, bearing in mind the hypothesis at 1.41 if borne out. And not only auxiliaries and canons get their arms twisted, but the bishops of small dioceses.

Sure the poor crater is broken hearted, and he thinkin he was going to be the Archbishop of Dublin. He doesn’t say much any more and cries at the mention of the word bishop. Sure what harm would it be doin to give him a small wee diocese down south. Gof knows he’s worked hard enough for. Sure it took laser treatment to get the brown stains off his nose and tongue, and that was painful I’d have ye know. I know he can be a pain in the arse sometimes but remember he was once a christian brother. He’s doin his best, so say a wee prayer that that nice colored man in Dublin will send off his name to the big man in Rome.

1.44: I accept your comment. I’m not quite sure of the exact and full circumstances of this story but to hide any criminal or to pervert the course of justice is unacceptable. There must be a full explanation. The scenario is a tough challenge for all Christians. Offering pastoral support to all criminals and abusers poses moral questions. Should we give “christian/moral support – as pastors – or should we avoid such people? I most certainly would not harbour or hide a criminal, but i would be obliged to offer moral and spiritusl support if asked. I have done so in the past, not a for the crime of paedophile but for other crimes. It is challenging.

Old Else is sang froid through and through. Sphinx link inscrutable. I doubt even Her Nunnynence would see a display of Enraged Elsie – not even when they’re watching the soaps together in the evening – with a TV dinner in their laps.
Were anyone foolish enough to mention this blog or Pat Buckley to Orr Else, I wager, you would get a blank expression and she would look straight through you, as if you didn’t exist. She’s good at doing that.
Were she a bit bored, she might say, “Pat who? What’s a blog?” And as soon you opened your mouth to explain she would see someone of importance and walk off and leave you. She’s good at that too.

I was in Wood Green parish when Vin was auxiliary for north London. He was as cold as a fish and had that Prince Andrew style of being slightly insulting in every remark. He was as bored as fook, spent the entire time looking over people’s shoulders when he was talking to them and he left as quickly as he could.

@4:53pm – sorry to hear. That happened the Trolly Dolly this one time when she was doing the rounds. She was wearing her white slacks too!! You should have heard the click clacks of the stilettos as she scarpered back to the Rabbit Room. She left a trail of course and Fanny was boooollin! An unfortunate kitten was sent out with a mop and bucket.

Whatever the rights and wrongs of Nichols, what he is like, what he has done in the past…..the fact is that he is a busted flush at this stage of his life and career, and even though he may still be sitting at the table and holding his cards, he is not going to influence very much. The Papal Nuncio and the Vatican know this and are not keeping him in post for him to do anything constructive, but simply as a holding operation until they can work out what they want to do and who their man is to do it. Nichols suits their purposes at the moment. Staying suits Nichols purposes, be it the nun, or his own ego, or some other odd notion that he has. However, he is not going to be doing anything bold, imaginative or constructive in the time he is allowed to continuing sitting on the pot. What might change the situation, at least from the Vatican’s perspective, would be an assessment that he is doing damage by being kept on. Then they would bring their deliberations forward, I think. This latest claim that he was in some way more intimately connected to Quigley as a friend / colleague / helper might be the thing that changes that assessment. We will see. Nichols himself is probably blinded at the moment by personal concerns and his over arching ego which will be telling him that he is indispensable and still has mileage in him. Nonetheless, it will not be Nichols who will be making the decisions as to how long he stays. The Vatican will be keeping a very close watch on this one. Await developments.

I recall a her visit to a parish i worked in on two occasions. She couldn’t praise the Church, the clergy and religious sufficiently enough. Of course she loved the Catholic vote!! I’ve been visiting a few parish website recently just to get a feel for things. I notice that many of their newsletters announce somewhat solemnly that ‘the Sunday Obligation has been suspended…” Do they really think we bother these days ? Haven’t we all got past the moral blackmail the Church has tried to inflict on us for all those decades ? They really need to cop on and recognise that we make up our minds for ourselves and do not need to be pressured or blackmailed by fear. It’s just another example of how those clergy really do live in another world, increasingly far removed and irrelevant to the world in which most of us inhabit.

Absolutely. I have never used that awful phrase. I have never felt obliged to worship God. It is my free choice, born out of love. However, some priests are as thick as old shite, and wouldn’t give it a second thought shure.

I have noticed how few priests put their name on their parish web site. To make contact is to send a form or telephone a church. The parish priest has no face, no name, no personal profile.

Bishop Buckley, You’ve a right quare lot who write on here. I sent a prayer request for my poor wee Timmy and not one has offered to pray for him. He’s heart-broken and inconsolable , all he does is cry. The cryin is partly at not gettin the big hat in Dublin and partly the pain of the laser getting the brown off his nose and tongue – poor wee soul. He dresses up at night in his room in the gowns he bought in Rome last year – he doesn’t think I know but I peep through the keyhole. My Timmy can be an arsehole but sure if they make him a bishop wouldn’t he be joinin a club of arseholes if what’s written here is half-true. So say a prayer for my wee Timmy, he’s a sad wee lad whose only ambition is to wear a mitre.
