TODAY IS THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE MURDER OF LITTLE JOSEPH PIKE BY THE “CHRISTIAN” BROTHER – BROTHER CONOR LANE IN TRALEE.

16 YEAR OLD ORPHAN BEATEN TO DEATH BY IRISH “CHRISTIAN” BROTHER.

In 2003 I went to the cemetery in Tralee to celebrate a Requiem Mass for a little boy murdered by a Christian Brother in 1958.

Here is homily.

Today is the 75th anniversary of Joseph’s murder.

RATH CEMETERY – TRALEE – KERRY – OCTOBER 17TH 2003 6 PM

BISHOP PAT BUCKLEY
HOMILY

In 1941 an innocent little baby boy called Joseph Pike was born to an Irish couple. For whatever reason, they could not, or would not keep him and bring him up. So, Joseph ended up in Saint Philomena’s Home in Dublin for unwanted babies. He grew up with a strong Dublin accent.

When he was only seven he was sent from Dublin to Tralee, Kerry to a so called industrial school operated by the Irish Christian Brothers. From the moment Joseph arrived in Tralee he was hated by one of the Brothers = a man called Brother Conor Lane. Brother Lane took exception to Joseph’s Dublin accent. From the day he arrived in Tralee Brother Lane beat him day in and day out.

At the time, St Joseph’s, as it was called was a hotbed of abuse. The boys were abused physically, mentally and sexually every day. Three of the Christian Brothers were particular abusers – Brother Conor Lane, Brother Roberts, who are now dead, and another brother who we must call Brother X who is still alive and against whom various actions are under way.

Boys were beaten every day to within an inch of their death. They were mocked and belittled by the Brothers. They were the object of severe mental persecution. And, every day boys were sexually abused – in their beds and in secret and dark corners inside and outside the building. Brother Roberts specialised in abusing boys at his teacher’s desk in the classroom while other boys looked on in fear. The suffering of the boys in St. Joseph’s in Tralee and akin to the suffering of the inmates in Hitler’s concentration camps. But all this happened in the name of God, perpetrated by so called servants of God and in Catholic Ireland where the government, the Garda and the public simply looked on!

In 1958 Joseph Pike was 16. Brother Lane was still beating him every day as he had done for 9 years. This particular day Joseph was unwell. He had a large boil on his shoulder. He could not eat the greasy food that Brother Lane put before him. Brother Lane beat him in his chair causing the boil on his shoulder to burst internally. Poor Joseph fell to the floor where Brother Lane continued to beat him until he became unconscious. Joseph was taken to the hospital where he later died!

After his death two death certificates appeared – one saying that he had died from “senile dementia”! Imagine a 16 year old boy dying from senile dementia? A second certificate said he had died from septicaemia – blood poisoning. Blood poisoning would be consistent with Brother Lane’s beating causing Joseph’s infected boil to burst internally. After he death the Christian Brother claimed he had died of leukaemia.

Brother Lane admitted he had beaten and kicked Joseph but denied killing him.

In 1996 the Garda launched an inquiry into Joseph’s death. The accumulated dozens of statements from former pupils of Saint Joseph’s. Those men are convinced that there was sufficient evidence in those statements to bring forward public prosecutions. This has not happened.

Friends of Joseph remember him having a very hurried funeral and being buried in an unmarked grave. Brother Lane hypocritically prayed aloud for Joseph’s eternal happiness!

After Joseph’s death, whenever they were asked, the Christian Brothers released Joseph’s surname in a miss-spelt form – calling him Pyke instead of Pike. Some say this was deliberate and it certainly frustrated those trying to search for any relations he may have had

John Prior, a classmate of Joseph’s, who himself was sexually abused in St. Joseph’s, has been championing Joseph’s case for many years now. Through John’s good work, a headstone was erected here in this cemetery. Joseph’s case is still open with the Garda and the happenings are gradually coming into the light.

I am here in Kerry today celebrating this Mass because John Prior could not get any priest in Kerry to celebrate it! When he asked the Bishop of Kerry to provide a Mass he was told “No priest is available”. When he asked the Tralee clergy for a mass they refused and told him that a Mass is available at the cemetery once a year for all those interred there. In the last few days the Bishop of Kerry has claimed that John never asked him for a Mass,

Joseph Pike is not the only child that was abused and killed by the Brothers and Nuns in Ireland. Other children died in St Joseph’s Tralee and were buried in unmarked graves. We don’t even know if death certificates were sought or issued. Some months ago the nuns in Hyde Park Convent in north Dublin sold their former convent and Magdalen Laundry for millions of pounds. To facilitate this financial bonanza for the nuns the bodies of the 150 Magdalens were removed from the convent graveyard and cremated in Glasnevin Crematorium. In this way of course any possible forensic evidence is destroyed. It also emerged that there were no death certificates for many of the dead women. More victims dying in suspicious circumstances, buried in unmarked graves and no death certificates issued. What was going on? And how is it that even now that this information is publicly available the government and the Garda are letting the religious orders away with it?

Every year when we celebrate the feast of the 2000 Holy Innocents killed by Herod on December 28th, we should remember the Holy Innocents that perished in Irish Catholic Institutions at the hands of the so called servants of God. And all these goings on were known to the Irish clergy and bishops and religious superiors did absolutely nothing except to cover it up!

And today they are still covering up. Instead of reaching for their Bible and reading the words “LET THE LITTLE CHILDREN COME UNTO ME” they are hiding behind Canon law, Civil Law and Ruro 5000 a day lawyers. They are using all their resources to cover up the truth, resist victims and survivors and shelter the abusers. They have conveniently forgotten the words of Christ – “THE TRUTH SHALL SET YOU FREE”.

The purpose of this Mass is to:

Remember Joseph Pike and his sufferings and pray for his eternal happiness.

Remember all the other victims that were abused and even killed within institutions owned and run by the Irish Catholic Church.

Highlight the unjust and cynical way the Irish Catholic Church is treating victims and survivors as they hide behind a battery of lawyers and call upon the Irish Bishops and clergy to stop being Pharisees and legalists and approach the whole area of abuse with the truthfulness and compassion of Chrisyn- whose disciples they claim to be.

Call upon the Irish Government to order a full judicial enquiry into all the deaths that took place in these Church institutions and the practice of burying people in unmarked graves without birth certificates.

Call upon the Garda here in Tralee to intensify and renew their enquiries into the murder – for it was murder – of Jspeph Pike.

PLEASE LET ME SLEEP TONIGHT

Throughout this tiny island,
In graves unmarked and cold;
Lie broken bones of boys and girls,
Their stories never told.
Men in black with collars white,
And Brides of Christ as well,
Sent these angels up to Heaven,
But made their short lives Hell.
No teddy bear, no lullaby.
No loving mother’s kiss;
But each night as they closed their eyes
They entered the abyss.
With eyes closed tight no sleep would come,
They listened for the sound;
The hob nailed boot out in the hall,
The handle turning round;
Oh don’t take me take someone else,
They prayed with all their might;
The leather strap the bamboo stick,
The screaming in the night.
And when they left they were not free,
Their minds were never right;
Still God can hear them as they pray,
Please let me sleep tonight.

(Leo Magee. Old Coombe. Dublin.

When I arrived in Tralee to celebrate the Mass at Joseph Pike’s headstone. We discovered the clergy had locked the graveyard gates to stop us getting in.

We got ladders and climbed the wall and had our sad Mass.

Joseph Pike’s fate shows the very evil that is at the heart of the Roman Catholic Church.

I hope God has devised a suitable punishment for all these Brothers, nuns and priests.

For in my wildest imagination I cannot think of one severe and monstrous enough.

It is those Tommy refers to who were/are disgraceful. Your comment tells us much about where YOUR priorities lie, and they do you no credit.

There is no truth in the allegation that no clergy were available. That distortion feeds into a particular narrative and it does no justice for Joseph Pike…God will be the final arbiter of all of us, including you, Pat. Don’t ever forget that. You have much to be cleansed of! You too ought to beg God for mercy.

How do you no there is no truth in the allegation that no priest was available?

Produce evidence, ‘Father’, because few nowadays will accept the word of a Catholic priest.

And rightly so.

I agree that those he refers to are utterly disgraceful that’s not the point, it does YOU no credit if you think the language used is appropriate from someone who say’s he’s a priest. Maybe you’re used to that language from priests in Lisburn, I am not.

Truly awful, Pat. Are you now able to say who the third Brother was? You were unable to at the time because there were proceedings under way.

I was thinking Pat about all this fuss about Canon Giles who died in Birmingham. I have no doubt he was a very good man, and a good priest, but when you die, your body immediately decomposes. Why dress it in palls and candles. And all this nonsense about being a priest for ever. You are flesh and blood. And then you die. It is your soul which is eternal. Not your priesthood. Who the hell was Melchizedech anyway. An imaginary figure. Some old eejit no doubt who got himself a following.

Tommy. All of those Bible characters were just “characters” who got themselves a following, and many of them WERE old eejits, but with sufficient charisma and strength of character to persuade the gullible and naive. And it continues to this day.

Tommy, if you are a priest, which I doubt, just become a layman. Why are you a chosen one? Was it the free house and light duties that attracted you?

You have done a great service for us all in remembering this boy, Pat, and highlighting his dreadful abuse. And the very fact that there are those in the Church today who would still deny his memory with their petty obstructions and excuses is a scandal, and that there is even a contributor to this website who wants to deny the boy’s memory is doubly galling.
Last year before lockdown there was a commemoration held on Hampstead Heath for Peter Tyrell, who burned himself to death there in the 1960s, having been faced by a wall of lawyers every time he went back to Letterfrack in Galway to complain about the sexual abuse he experienced there in the 1920s, yes, the 20s! This abuse did not begin yesterday or the day before. According to Karen Liebreich in her book, The Fallen Order, it goes right back to the first attempt by the Catholic Church to set up schools for poor children by a Spanish cleric in 1600 who founded the Piarist Order and sexual abuse became widespread in them and eventually the order had to be disbanded as both the founder and the other clerics involved succumbed to the temptations around them. And the patron saint of Catholic schools is still its founder, an abuser himself.
About sixty people turned up for the Tyrell remembrance which contained a minutes silence for everyone to remember him according to their own religious or humanist beliefs. And when this Covid lockdown is over, I hope we can reconvene this Tyrell Remembrance gathering for him so that it becomes an annual event and that there is a monument erected to this martyr. As the Church knows only too well, it is only by passing beliefs into cultural events, that they are remembered by the community, and we should learn by their example. Monuments and events, songs and paintings have to be created so that these people are not forgotten.
When it is safe to do so and a date can be set, I will let you know this website know.
And Thank you for remembering this Kerry martyr on your site, Pat.

Conor Lane and his confreres were physical and sexual abusers of their day. Many of that generation were able to avoid prosecution for their crimes – either because of coverup, unwillingness on behalf of the authorities to prosecute, lack of resources, ignorance, for a whole range of other reasons. Nowadays, the situation is very different, and rightly so. Joseph Quigley, described by his trail judge as a sexual sadist, has recently been convicted to 11 years imprisonment, which means he will probably be free in just over five years. It took a great deal of time for him to be brought to justice, but he was eventually brought in to the court, even though the people for whom he worked and various archbishops were carelessly, perhaps even wilfully, complicit in him avoiding judgement for so many years. I listened to the recording / podcast of an interview of Richard Scorer who had been involved in some of the IICSA cases as a lawyer, which was posted the other day on this blog, and I was astounded to hear that even to this day universal mandatory reporting of crimes such as Quigley and others have committed is still not a legal requirement. I can know, or have reasonable suspicion, that someone is being abused either physically, sexually or psychologically, and I am perfectly within my rights to keep that information to myself and not to have to report it to the statutory authorities. In the UK the only requirement to report abuse comes from a requirement to report abuse by virtue of one’s employment – so, a social worker who comes across suspected abuse has a legal duty to report it, a teacher also I would imagine. But, for the generality of people there is no such legal requirement. In most cases of abuse someone other than the abuser and the victim will have some knowledge or suspicion or reason to know that abuse is taking place. So often, that person does not report anything, because they don’t want to be seen to be interfering, because they can’t be bothered, because they don’t know what to do, because they don’t join all the dots together, because they are afraid of the consequences for themselves……. In the case of Quigley, there will have been a number of people who knew something was amiss and something wicked was taking place, but he was not reported for some time. In the case of Joseph Pike, Christian Brothers throughout Ireland will have known that egregious abuse and misuse of children was taking place in their institutions. The results of inaction, lack of reporting, and taking responsibility were obvious for the victims. Throughout our countries, people are still by one way or another able to ignore what they see and know, and they have a perfectly watertight lawful reason for not reporting it. Including the priest who suspects or elicits such information through the confessional. Now, there’s a problem…… ! This blog has for a long time, sometimes clumsily, sometimes imperfectly, challenged the silence of complicity, by calling out all kinds of dysfunction and misbehaviour by the clerical caste. It is one of the very few voices that does that, without fear or favour. That is a service of great value. Long may it continue !

You are out of touch as in Ireland and the UK All dioceses have safeguarding rules approved by the state that all cases is reported straight to the Police or Guardia.
The clergy are suspended until enquiries are complete and even then if no criminal charges or innocent the Bishop can dismiss him from clerical state and then the Priest innocent or guilty takes it through canon law.
The days are well over for cover up’s and the quicker Nichols goes the quickly the Church can move on and try and get some credibility back.

@ 1012 – there may well be an agreement that diocese will report suspected abuse to the statutory authorities. But an individual priest or church worker who suspects abuse is not required by law to report anything. The diocese may take action against them under their employment for not following the diocesan guidelines. but there are no grounds under the present law for an individual who does not report suspected abuse to be prosecuted. A legal requirement for mandatory reporting is still lacking. There will be priests and church workers today who know or suspect abuse who do not report it, and nobody can do anything about it.

Seeing as Birmingham and Westminster didn’t follow the rules a mere 12 years ago, and the entire E&W Roman catholic schools agency didn’t either, I don’t think the various sodalities which are agents for obscure Vatican City dicasteries, which interfere in parishes up and down the land (claiming to act for senior archdioceses), will be in a hurry to – for example – adopt monetary propriety.

The fly in the ointment with your response is, that believe it or not It’s not currently a legal requirement to report child sexual abuser or, neglect, in England & Wales, hopefully with the IICSA’s intervention this will become a mandatory requirement soon, as it has advised. Presumably we all are aware of the contention over child sex abuse and the requirement of mandatory reporting, by Roman Catholic priest even if discovered during confessions, including any other church where this is likely to happen, it’s a tricky one for many reasons, priest unwilling to break the seal of Confessions, and monitoring it. Hopefully eventually all will come to a a consensus, to enable all to protect children above all else, instead of being the other way around when Roman Catholic Bishop’s only wanted to protect the institution and not it’s children or, it’s vulnerable adults, a great deal of “good” that did.
I can’t speak for Ireland.
Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse England & Wales (IICSA)
The final report of the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse, published in October 2022, said children had suffered as a result of “a marked absence of a cohesive set of laws and procedures in England and in Wales that require individuals working with children to report child sexual abuse”.
The report recommended the UK Government and the Welsh Government introduce legislation placing certain individuals – ‘mandated reporters’ – under a statutory duty to report child sexual abuse in prescribed circumstances (eg, where they observe recognised indicators of sexual abuse).
The report recommended it should be a criminal offence for mandated reporters to not report child sexual abuse where they are in receipt of a disclosure of child sexual abuse from a child or perpetrator, or witness a child being sexually abused.
The Government has said it will provide “a comprehensive response” to the report’s recommendations within six months of its publication.

It’s quite common re beatings re 👆and also my time. I have heard a true story about one boy from Clare who was beaten up and then died. That’s around 1940’s. Cbs told his parents that he died from flu. Clever answer cis in these days there were no post mortems. One boy died oddly or suspiciously when I was around that time. We suspected that he may have got a heavy belt on his head from Cbs. He died within few days when we all last saw him. He was only 13 decent nice kid from Wicklow. Sad.

Pat, would you say mass for all the dead and living abused members including all of us who went through their brutal system. Some of us have ptsd or whatever which arose from religious orders such as CBS and daughters of the cross of liege. Cbs was fair cos they apologised to me personally but not the nuns.

It was awful and shocking to see priest block your entrance that was VERY unchristian and uncharitable. I knew a fella from working class area ballymun. He went to a funeral somewhere in Wicklow or wexford as I can’t rem exactly where.

Anyway, Fr Fortune blocked him and his friend’s coffin at the gates as he demanded money. My friend thumped him way off the mark and missed it. But fr fortune eventually gave away to funeral and it’s people following the coffin. Couldn’t believe the mindset of some priests who try to block an incoming funeral which was v v unchristian and uncharitable.

Ah, Fr Littleton’s stalker is back.

The more you look into stalking, the more complicated it becomes and the more spin-off it has for the way in which our society works. There is the rejected stalker; the resentful stalker; the incompetent suitor; the intimacy-seeking stalker; and the predatory stalker. The strange thing is that many of those stalking behaviours come about because of mental health issues. It is sometimes very easy to use “mental health” as a catch-all phrase. However, it cannot be dismissed and must be looked at. Some of those who engage in stalking have mental health issues.

In 2015, the Office for National Statistics recorded that 4·9% of women and 2·4% of men experienced stalking. In England and Wales, that accounted for around 1·5 million people. I feel sorry for each and every one of them.

11.50: A good essay! Mandatory reporting if any suspected or known abuse is mandatory for people in authority of any kind – that’s my information. Such was and is repeated to us in our Diocese. We are morally and civilly required NOW to act in accordance with guidelines. This means that we must act instantly if we suspect or know of abuse of any kind (of children, the young and the vulnerable) and report to civil authority. On two occasions in past 12 years I had reason to do this. Many, many years ago, ling before any guudelines of any kind, I suspected a potential abuser and informed Gardai and had him removed from all Church activities. Incidentally, I have never in all my years as a priest (43) never had any “child abuser” confess their crime to me nor had I ever any reason to suspect any penitent. I’ve had penitents confess some grevious sins and actions requiring prolonged confession and advice to seek counselling but never had a potential or actual paedophile. Today, if such happened I would act by the requirement of civil law.

So if a kiddie-fiddler confessed his kiddie-fiddling to you under the Sacrament of Confession, and it’s much-vaunted ‘seal’, you would inform the police of the confession and identity said kiddie-fiddler to them, even if he was a priest as well as a kiddie-fiddler?

I doubt if I’l get an answer, let alone a straight one.

Instead of Francis who is likely to canonise Benedict 16, surely this boy would be a more apt saint.
I will put this on my Facebook page now for all the world to see, what wickedness was inflicted on some of the most vulnerable people imaginable. There must be some monument installed in Tralee with a synopsis of the pitiful story, for all to see,Lest we forget.
