DO WE REALLY WANT THE PRIESTHOOD OF THE FUTURE TO BE ABOUT ACTIVELY GAY MEN WEARING BROCADE AND LACE AND NOT BEING PROPER PASTORS?

I recently had to visit a consultant about the osteoarthritis in my hands.

He was a Catholic and said something that made me think:

“I treat a lot of priests of your vintage who have arthritis in the hands from getting their hands stuck into on the ground pastoral work”.

It made me think back.

During my five years as a curate in St. Peter’s Cathedral – in the midst of a woefully deprived area, I did use my hands a lot.

As the founding chairman of the Divis Resident’s Association, I organised a major cleanup of the area involving myself and the parishioners sweeping streets, filling skips with rubbish, washing walls and painting them.

In other ways, in places like the youth club and schools, and holiday trips, you got stuck in very physically as well.

Matt Wallace

And I wasn’t the only one doing it. There were others in Belfast like Father Matt Wallace RIP and Father Paddy McWilliams who were quite happy to get their hands dirty.

Paddy McWilliams
Des Wilson

And others like Fr Des Wilson, Belfast and Father McDyer of Donegal.

James McDyer

We saw ourselves as servants of the parishioners and not superior to them and if they got tired and dirty we got tired and dirty with them.

The modern priest seems to be a totally different character.

He is obsessed about his status as ontologically changed.

He is dressed in more black than an undertaker and wears a collar the size of a surgical collar.

He wants to say Mass in Latin wearing tons of brocade, gold leaf and lace.

If you want to see him you must make an appointment to see him with the parish secretary.

All my life, until this say, Ive had no secretary and I’m available 24/7.

People in crisis dont need an appointment. They need instant access to their pastor – even if it is at 3 am.

My days in parishes, apart from Mass and the Sacraments, revolved around school visitation morning and afternoon and the youth club in the evening.

And there was time for fun having a pint with the youth leaders after 9.30 pm in a social club – where it was also normal for me to be approached about issues or to hear a Confession.

These younger guys spend their spare time, of which there’s a lot, visiting other Latin queens, drinking pink gin, pouring over vestment catalogues – thats when they are not having gay sex with each other or visiting cruising spots and saunas.

They will never have osteoarthritis in their manicured and moisturised hands.

I remember an old London lady telling me about his former PP the later Cardinal John Heenan. He was never off the streets and out of the homes of his parishioners in the East End. When he sat down in homes parishioners noticed holes in the soles of his shoes.

Heenan

There are so few examples of real priests now among the under 40s.

Seminaries and dioceses are now full of pansy clerics who never did a day’s work in their lives, dont really believe, never pray but just enjoy posing on clerical pedestals.

The priesthood, more than ever needs:

Pastors not dictators.

Adults, not teenagers that never grew up.

Men more concerned about changing the lot of their not parishioners, not the ontologically changed obsessives.

Priests on streets, priests in homes, priests in food banks.

AND NOT

Upstarts and snobs dressed as Victorian clergymen.

I don’t see anywhere in England where the priests or seminarians wear any form of clerics apart from a slip in collar at most. There is a recent tendency to turn every aspect of an ordination into the equivalent of a wedding with invitations, formal photographs and wearing cassocks but no where is Latin used in parishes. There are an increased number of Oratories with some variations on the new mass and two priestly societies for the old mass but neither of them have parishes only shrine churches. The seminarians at Oscott would not be able to sing anything in Latin apart from the Missa de Angelis. The first year Latin exam is to translate the names of the rooms in the seminary. Perhaps the Anglican converts are to blame?

Oscott is a knocking shop for gay seminarians. In and out of each other’s rooms all night long. Hoping over the wall to the local cruising sites. No gay bars or saunas at the moment, but when they are they will be off to London and Manchester. Local ones just a bit too obvious. Oratories ? It’s worth going along to watch the antics. I love the Oxford one. Free entertainment any Sunday.

Pat: a little but too much of self praise!!!!…But you make an interesting observations. The modern priests are not at all “modern”. They are in a different world. Some are learning fast about being “real” human beings and not clerical automatons or defenders of rituals and traditions, important as they are. Those of us ordained 60/50/40 years somehow learned a theology and pastoral spirituality of being with people and available always..We visited hones regularly, the sick were paramount, the poor and lonely cared for, schools administered well and faithful chaplaincy given, adult catechesis important. Sadly, with the shortage of priests these regular works of mercy, caring ministry and pastoral priorities have changed. It’s not possible for one priest to do everything. Also, the social, economic and cultural revolutions have changed the meaning and expectations of priestly ministry and presence. We are “wanted” by some but I wouldn’t feel comfortable knocking on doors as I once did in the 70’s! And I’m not so sure if Pat’s shoes would be full of holes if he was presently in a full time parish setting. I don’t mean this unkindly but to indicate that attitudes have changed considerably in the past 25 years. I do not arrange to meet people through the parish secretary. Never. Secretaries may receive phone calls and enquiries but we take care of people thereafter. Let’s not caricature and create the “lazy” priest narrative. When we criticise and caricature we should look to our conscience first! Considering all that’s happened within the chyrch I am surprised any man would want to join the priesthood. It requires a total renewal and to live it fully and totally with dedication, cinviction and in a truly Christ-like way is a huge challenge. It is easy to fall and be ridiculed for simply doing your best.

As a former RC priest who is also excommunicated I couldn’t agree more. I was so sick at seminary of students comparing the amount of lace on their cottas. They wouldn’t know how to do a hard days work, wouldn’t want to damage the delicately anointed hands.

Deaf Guy. Pat Buckley has never been excommunicated and has NO letter from the Vatican to say likewise.
Pat Buckley by his rights resides in a diocesan property and if he were excommunicated then Pat Buckley would post the official letter on here, maybe around Saint John Pauls time as Pontiff if Pat Buckley was excommunicated.
As for 10 10. he is deluded as Peter says about being excommunicated.
Furthermore the Church has not excommunicated anyone if you look at the history the SSPX and other Latin Brigade are still around after Vatican two and also the Church has accommodated all the Anglicans.

What happened and changed to make the Catholic priesthood a pansy, dandy, fairy and frilly lacy vocation – driving out the straights and hetero – replacing them with gay mafias, pink cliques and paedos!! What the feck went wrong – why and when?

Like

Because the majority of the genuine seminarians are hounded out and, the Bishops allow this because they do not want genuine priests; they want men who will put the institution before Christ and the Gospels.
If you enter a Roman seminary, nowadays, with a genuine vocation and a sincere heart you are a sitting duck.
If you are bold enough to fight for justice and expose that which is evil or criminal – then they will class you as a “Danger” to their ways.
Of course, the irony is: they are the dangerous ones – they are a danger to anybody even remotely vulnerable.
—-
Remember, if you even attempt to do good or bring about light or justice by entering into any kind of dialogue with a Roman Bishop — just convince yourself, beyond ALL doubt, that you are entering into dialogue with Satan himself. This way, you will be under no illusions… You will be far better prepared.
Any objectives of bringing about light, love or justice will likely be more attainable.

Pat, you need to read about arthritis from reputable medical journals. As one who worked physically hard all through my seven seminary years for my expenses and who also played much sport which caused injury, resulting in surgery with subsequent arthritis in later years, I don’t think lifting, sweeping, pulling weeds, shovelling and painting are necessarily causes of arthritis, unless it’s your life’s fulltime work for 15/20/30 years! Arthritis may be genetic. Your theory is a little simplistic. Some of my family worked in farming and the building industry, damn hard, and do not have arthritis. I also think you are too bitchy and judgmental about younger clerics. That they don’t emulate your “sacrificial hard grafting” (???) doesn’t make them bad!! You are no icon…

The obsessive stalker who continues to bully and harass MB.

This article may help

https://www.webmd.com/sex-relationships/features/mind-stalker-why-torment-someone

The overwhelming majority of stalkers are men — four to one, Zitek says. Psychiatrists have developed several stalker profiles:

The rejected stalker. This person was rejected in a relationship, and they perceive it as an insult, they feel wounded, and they are seeking vindication.

The resentful stalker. These are self-righteous, self-pitying people who may threaten, but they are the least likely to act on it.

The intimacy-seeking stalker. They believe they are loved or will be loved by the victim. Often they focus on someone of higher social status. This person is mentally ill and delusional.

The incompetent. This person is socially backward. They don’t really understand the social rules involved in dating and romance and don’t mean any harm.

The predator. This is about sex gratification, control, and violence. The stalker doesn’t necessarily know the victim. The victim may not know they are being stalked. But a predator plans their attack, rehearses it, has lots of sexual fantasies about it.

When I meet a priest who is under 40 years of age, I assume automatically that he is homosexual, and that there is a strong likelihood that he is acting out his homosexuality to some degree, including, for some of them, up to and including the rather extreme behaviours that are described in this blog on a regular basis. For the rest, for the most part homosexual clergy will engage in relationships at various levels, sexually and emotionally expressed. Those who sublimate who they are under the character of their priesthood so often become very strange and odd, and if you dig a bit deeper you will discover that they are very frustrated, angry and full of self-loathing. This is a toxic mix. Lace and brocade can only compensate to a certain degree. The priesthood as lived in our days is predominantly homosexual and sexually active.
These men, and the Church they represent, insist on us believing the fiction that they are celibate and chaste. I think they believe that they are fooling us. Well, dear Fathers, that is not the case. We know pretty clearly what you are up to, and how you are living your lives. For the most part, I couldn’t give a jot about their orientation or proclivities. What I do care about is the institutionalised hypocrisy that takes place, and the arrogance they exhibit in assuming that we will be taken in by their dysfunction and their lies.

Along with many others today, you are very wrong on a number of points about ex Anglican clergy.
Firstly to call them queens is disparaging. Many of them are married with children. Please do not use that term to Father Ed Tomlinson, married man with children and a RUGBY player. He writes a lovely blog with no bitchy comments. Many of them are lawyers and professional people. Indeed one deacon is judge. So be careful what you write.
Secondly, the mother church of the Ordinariate is in Golden Square at the west end of Soho very close to the London Palladium. So i would expect them to dine near there. Were you with them when you heard them bitching about his eminence’s homily? If so, you are a bit of a Judas. If not, I suspect that it is the usual London wide boy comment “somebody told me ” or “I just heard”.

The bizarre ahistorical misconceptions on all sides in the church.
1. There was a decree from the sacred congregation of rites in the 30s (sorry I don’t have the reference) which said any lace should depend on the rank of the cleric, which for a plain priest meant none.
2. Ellard’s mass of the future gives pictures of mass as it was actually already celebrated before the council, with no baroquery. The reaction against that had been going on for at least a century.
3. The current code of canon law says seminarians should be fluent in Latin.
4. At the time the new breviary came out you still had to get dispensed to say it in the vernacular and this has not changed.
5. The Anglo Catholic priests of the past were renowned as slum priests and hard workers, even the posh ones.
Conclusions:
There is a lot of politicking and dressing up going on, which is unrelated to the past.
Parties in the church have drawn up behind positions and styles which are not historical.
The solution to this is look at the actual history to avoid ahistorical partisanship.
It is quite possible to be celebrating mass back to the people, in Latin, and say the breviary in Latin and follow the council to the letter.
My own opinion is lace is hideous and churches are getting more like old lady’s drawing rooms. Cases in point would be the oratories, Corpus Christi Maiden Lane and Farnborough Abbey.

You don’t have time to look because you won’t find it in Sacrosanctum Concilium. If it was in the 1917 code the documents of the Second Ecumenical Council of the Vatican would have superseded it. You are talki g nonsense, as may be seen from the rest of your post.

Like

6:59: no, you’re arguing from an absence. The question was whether a dispensation was ‘ever’ required to say the office in the vernacular so your point about the council is irrelevant.
Let’s turn it round since you’re being so silly – produce evidence that priests ever fulfilled their obligation to say the office by saying it in the vernacular before vè2. You won’t find any because the only people who ever said the office in the vernacular were sisters, lay brothers and the laity. Priests had to be proficient in Latin for a reason.
The thing which has changed is a priest can join in the office if say he is staying in a religious house, without saying the Roman office. In the old days you would see diocesan priests in chapels of monasteries on retreat muttering their own office because the monastic office didn’t fulfill his obligation and you actually had to say it with your lips.
Let me know when you find that reference…..

No! The question was not was it ever required. The question was (Point 4 in your post) whether a dispensation was required when the new breviary came out (i.e. 1974), as you claimed. Answer: no.

My impression on occasional visits there is that the PP is not into Latin or lace, but seems happy for his church to be used by those who are. There is quite a long history of the Old Rite being used at Maiden Lane going back to the time of Henry Dodd PP – anyone remember him back in the dark days of the seventies? He was the complete antithesis of the young lace queens of today and had absolutely no interest in flummery or interior decoration either in his church or very basic accommodation in his presbytery. Barnardos is another “charity” masquerading as totally reliant on voluntary contributions. As said on the blog recently, they calculate and cost up all and any services they provide, and charge organisations full costs for that service. This allows them to pay well above average salaries to all their staff, salaries well above equivalent workers in statutory public sector employment.
And they go to considerable lengths to maintain a positive high public image both through advertisements, and taking on high profile work.
You can bet they’ll be getting well paid for this project. And all the while claiming tax relief as a “charitable institution!”

The other cosy and nice thing about these charities is their ability to pick and choose what “work” they do. Very interesting that actual ministry hasn’t come up in the comments at all today. Very very telling and as usual Pat’s moderation policy gives the clergy full rein to show how bitchy they are.
My own opinion would be that a newly ordained priest should be clad in the diocesan vestment to show him entering the presbyterate.
Actually I think a priest should be ordained privately as they often were until ordinations became like weddings. Even if not private in the past where many priests were ordained at once it was clearly a group thing and not a bizarre ceremony which seems to focus on nothing but the individual before he shuffles off to St Luke’s.
Incidentally people keep saying the priesthood is dysfunctional. Since the whole point of celibacy is saying goodbye to a huge part of human life you can’t really expect them to be that well adjusted – that is the whole point.
