BITS AND PIECES.

Mark Langham

The funeral of Monsignor Mark Langham (60) took place yesterday at Westminster Cathedral.

He was more recently the chaplain of Cambridge Univetsity.

Before that he was the administrator of Westminster Cathedral.

No one at the funeral mentioned he liked to French kiss the senior altar boys at Westminster Cathedral – something the senior altar boys did not appreciate. The English prefer their tongue cold.

Why send a priest who tongued senior altar boys to be chaplain to a university full of young males?

Is that why Arnold or Elsie never said a word about Langham at the funeral Mass?

Nor did anyone what happened in the parish of Bayswater when Langham too over from the saintly Fr Michael Hollings who took the homeless into live with him in the presbytery.

As one Westminster priest messaged ne yesterday:

“When Langham took over Bayswater he threw the homeless out – a well known fact in Westminster. It didn’t suit his champagne lifestyle”.

I always wondered where Richard Purcell stayed that night in Maynooth. The mystery is solved. Thank you Bishop Pat for uncovering this pictorial masterpiece. Bravo sir!

Shure Pat if that’s true then he is just another of Elsie’s boys. I have no time for Elsie. I wouldn’t call him that if I didn’t know certain things which I do know. I am afraid I have no respect for him what-so-ever. What a shower of shit you shed light on my dear Pat. I had hoped in all truthfulness to give up the old drink for Lent, but no such luck. At least I have cut down a bit. That is something. All love from me.

Guys like Langham (if, of course, the allegations against him are true) wantonly disregard social, ethical, and moral boundaries, without any apparent concern for self-repercussions, that the rest of us would naturally fear to cross, even if we did fancy the pants/dress off someone. Why do such people as Langham feel they have licence, for instance, to forcibly French-kiss another? That is not a far cry from rape; indeed, rape could be the logical next step.
Was Richard Sipe right? That people like Langham have sexual urges up to forty times stronger than others’? Urges that are perhaps irresistible? That compel them to cross such boundaries? If this is true, then men like Langham are highly dangerous and should not have been ordained into positions of power over others, especially young people; such power is a noted aphrodisiac. Hardly helpful for weak personalities like Langham. And what is Roman Catholic priesthood if not primarily about power over others.
Let’s be honest: it certainly isn’t about serving Jesus Christ.

Like

As an addendum to the above reflection. Langham spent his entire life engaged in a pious fantasia- its objective was to keep reality at arms length.
However reality and its co-respondent suffering do have a way of invading all our lives including the lives of those dedicated to keeping it as something ‘out there’.
Langham discovered this truth and for his sake let us hope he managed to turn this situation he created around before death. Given the replies on the bishop’s blog we have learned that charity was not a feature of this characters personal or public life.

Langham’s antics would remind one of the missing former Dean of Belfast and one time chaplain of More House.

Like

And where is the Dean these days, and what does he get up to ? Has he been completely let lose or is he still on the payroll, but ‘retired’ ? If the latter, then that’s going to go on for a number of decades and cost a great deal for no return. I know he’s from a comfortable background, but like the rest of the world if he needs support, should he not go out and get a job of some sort, even menial, in order to support himself rather than rely on others to keep him, just as happens in the rest of the world to everybody else ?

By “better” it is always meant that the priest would be prayerful, charitable, hard working and able to put up with unpleasant or annoying people and to be gentle with them. Something which an insufferable personage such as you would never grasp.

+ Pat. You say in today’s blog, ” … Nor did anyone what happened in the parish of Bayswater when Langham too over from the saintly Fr Michael Hollings who took the homeless into live with him in the presbytery. As one Westminster priest messaged me yesterday: “When Langham took over Bayswater he threw the homeless out .. ”
Fr Langham was right.
I know that parish, I served Mass there as a boy. And, as it happens, I sometimes went to Evening Mass at that church on my way home from work though I never met Fr Hollings, I understand that although he was the PP he had never spent much time in the parish he lived out in some rural area, Hampshire I think. A lot of his parishioners didn’t even know what he looked like, a curate ran the parish.
At the time when the police abandoned their inquiries some said it was because he was ill and dying. Of course Cardinal Hume (Ampleforth) wouldn’t hear a word against him. Never criticize a priest, especially a former major in the Coldstream Guards with the MC,
I was living in a nearby parish, and when I remember that a group of his ‘homeless’ men re-located, and again they had free housing. It was a worrying situation. Two of them were teachers, unable to get work despite London’s terrible shortage of teachers.
Laymen should NEVER be housed in presbyteries. For example, remember Peter Tobin in Glasgow, with a girl’s body under the church floorboards.

Like

@5.09am The same usual crap from old Joe Lollard. You clearly did not know anything about Fr Hollings given some of your false claims regarding him. You say you never met the man but you sure as hell have plenty to say about him. Would Christ have kicked out the homeless as you suggest, maybe you are just content passing by on the other side of the road.

I think that over the next few days all sorts of interesting things will come out about Langham’s predilections. I’m sure much of it will be stuff that didn’t cross the line in to anything that would have got him in to trouble with the civil authorities, but a good bit of it will look somewhat iffy in terms of the professional and personal standards that one might expect of people in positions of authority, influence and professional standing. The wonder to me is he seems to have been able to sail through all of this. I suspect that this has to do with what another commentator said the other day, that Langham was one of ‘us’, that select group that is part of the clerical ‘in set’ and part of that group that has privileged status in the higher echelons of patronage of the clerical culture and chumocracy. The mood music around the funeral at Westminster Cathedral seems to have been bit strange, almost as if there was an unease and a bit of embarrassment about it, because the likes of Nichols and Arnold and others know the truth and are a bit uncomfortable with it, but conscious that to be seen to shun things completely would cause even more comment. Sadly, I think more will emerge, and it will not necessarily enhance the reputation of Langham or of those who promoted him.

I’m not surprised Elsie and Arnold didn’t say anything about Langham at his funeral. They know all about his antics so were being ultra careful. They even got Hayes the VG to read a long obituary at the beginning. I’m surprised he could read it as he’s often getting pissed the night before with his chum Jim Curry.

Like

So the VG read out a long obituary, and then another cleric preached about the virtues of the deceased for up to forty minutes? No wonder Elsie and Arnold were bored shitless – especially if they knew stuff which had been left unsaid.

The picture of Mark Langham pouring bubbles is probably taken on the roof terrace of the Venerable English College in Rome at Sunday or festa preprandial aperitifs. Ahhh, that languid, entitled, aloof life of places like the VEC ! I remember it well. Scratch the surface, however, and you will find all of the strange behaviours and inclinations that you find everywhere else in the clerical culture. Just slightly more refined, done with a touch of class, and of course with the entitled expectation that they are untouchable, supported and protected by their own.

Like

@9.01am Wrong. It’s the roof terrace he created at Westminster Cathedral with the best views over central London. We heard yesterday in the homily that Langham often hosted parties up there and had a fondness for champers.

Like

Same thing. Nice life. Entitled. Champagne quaffing. Why not, if you can get it, I suppose ?! However, the rest of us don’t get those opportunities. We’re more busy with worrying about how we are going to make ends meet, and whether anybody is going to be interested in caring for us when we’ve put put out to some meagre pasture after we’re past our sell by date. How you get looked after depends on who you know and whether you are part of the preferred in set. Happens in all dioceses.

The roof terrace ‘he created’? ‘He’?😕 Oh, I doubt he dirtied his hands on that.

Probably the work of some Cathedral lackey.

All of us are foolish and fallible, and have done things at various times which we regret. As the Lord Himself is merciful, so might we have a modicum of compassion and understanding of human folly. The problem concerning the priesthood lies in the assumption that a priest is elevated above all this ordinary human messiness. Within living memory of most us is the notion that a priest or religious can do no wrong, so allegations made could simply not be true. Then you get the fawning obituaries and panegyrics giving the impression that another saint has just been added to the calendar.

Like

+Pat, do you have evidence about Mark Langham from more than one person? It would be a terrible judgement on you if what you have told us is not backed by strong evidence.

I too am very uncomfortable with the comments made about Mgr Langham today. I knew of the man when he was cathedral administrator and again when he was based at Fisher House. He has always been very highly regarded and respected by Cathedral parishioners and clergy and by students and lecturers in Cambridge. The suggestion that he “french kissed” altar servers is preposterous at the very least and unless you can back it up with hard evidence, is probably something you should remove from this blog.
If it’s true, you’ll have reliable evidence from multiple sources.
I don’t think it is though.

Like

@10.50am How very naive you are! You speak about how uncomfortable you are but most people are uncomfortable with the truth of this situation. That includes the Cardinal Archbishop, John Arnold, Bernard Longley et al.

Like

If, and only if, the victim or victims of Monsignor Langham’s unwanted advances has the courage (and God knows they need courage) to report these allegations to the police and relevant authorities then such whispers remain the preserve of clerical gossip, rumour and innuendo – sexual predators are gamblers – they like risk and understand the psychology of shame and embarrassment – and those who gatekeep their secrets rely on this too – hoping and praying the victims meet stum and go away – think of Saville – a high profile Catholic – adored by Hume – everybody knew, everybody kept quiet – until he died – then the floodgates opened – this is what they fear most a tsunami of victims coming forward clamouring first for justice and then compensation!!

Like

For Heaven’s sake, there can be no comparison with Saville. I gather the identity of this “senior server” is well known, and he is not a kid. Had he not wanted to be “French-kissed” by the then Administrator – and I can well understand any reluctance! – he might have simply kept his mouth shut, and not cadged free dinners of various old clerical queens who were foolishly enamoured of him. My understanding is that the French kiss was administered over drinks in Langhams apartment in clergy house.

Neither Michael Byrne nor Brendan Marshall is a priest or in training, so I don’t see they need concern this blog, which is supposed to expose corruption among the clergy and rotten seminary system. I think we can hardly begrudge their making decent careers outside. As for the Westminster story, we need some clarification as to whether the senior server was a grown man or teenage boy before making all kinds of assumptions. I don’t see why Longley’s good name should be dragged into this because he was giving another bloke dinner. Some “senior servers” are in their nineties. On the other hand, why did the Monsignor leave Westminster for Rome? I seem to recall nervous exhaustion. Had a complaint been made? It would appear that a lot of tittle-tattle is coming from Westminster clergy themselves “in the know” as the Requiem was closed to the public.

The Administrator would be well advised to discourage lads from becoming servers and bring back those determined middle-aged women ( often ex-nuns ) with round specs and Mary Jane shoes who used to swarm the sanctuaries back in the day, much to the rage of the queens. They would certainly put the ex-Anglicans’ noses out of joint, since they fled the C of E to get away from women. I remember talking about my beliefs in the manner of the precocious 18 year old I was and the chaplain being stone cold.
