ABBOT RICHARD PURCELL CASE NOW MAKING ITS WAY THROUGH THE ROMAN CORRIDORS OF POWER.

The case of Abbot Richard Purcell which has featured on the blog for a while, has now begun to make its way through the Vatican’s corridors of power.

The case is being brought by a small number of Catholic lay men and women – long time supporters of Mount Melleray.

They are using funds they intended to leave to the monastery in their wills to finance the case.

They have employed a number of Roman canon lawyers and an Irish senior counsel to guide and advise them.

Initially they had hoped that Purcell would do the right think himself.

No hope of that I’m afraid.

What has happened to the admirable and godly Cistercians?

LOCAL BISHOPS RESISTING FRANCIS ON WOMEN LECTORS AND ACOLYTES.

Pope Francis recently changed canon law to allow for women to be admitted to the “minor orders” of Lector and Acolyte.

It would involve the bishop enrolling women in in these two “orders” traditionally reserved to male seminarians as part of their journey to priesthood.

It would be a very positive step towards the integration of women into the male dominated church.

Francis is not getting much of a reaction from the world’s bishops.

So much for Catholics obeying the pope.

Regarding the case of Dom Purcell. If true I am saddened to hear that a group of lay people have to do this. Why have the ecclesiastical authorities, the Abbot General & the local ordinary, not been able to take the appropriate measures in this case?

Another wonderful spiritually uplifting Lenten talk for our inspiration!! If inly. The blog is rotten to its core. It invites mockery, ridicule, jeering, condemnation and a further humiliating of chosen individuals… Sad that all of this is done so easily. Maybe Christ will find his way into your heart.

It’s not this blog which invites all of the above, dear — it is the above mentioned behaviour of individuals and groups who bring themselves and others to the attention of this blog. They have brought themselves into disrepute, sweety. We are merely talking about what is topical.

Good for the bishops resisting opening up admission as lectors and acolytes. That Francis decision reflects a clericalist view that says that being on the sanctuary is a superior calling for elite lay people (a bit like the drive for permanent deacons) and that the more clerical you are the better.

1. If the Purcell matter is being progressed through the Roman canon law courts, then that is a good thing. It is disappointing that the matter was not addressed by Purcell himself (either he’s in complete denial or has just decided to tough it out), nor by the OCSOs who seem just to be weak, nor by the local bishop who just seems to want to bury his head in the sand. The matter going to Rome will escalate the case of Purcell, and even though I am not convinced that they will deal with it transparently, given the Church’s inclination to minimise and cover up as much as they can ‘in order to prevent scandal to the faithful ‘ (!), it will at least put Purcell on their radar and it might just clip his wings.
2. Returning to yesterday’s blog about Langham. I’ve followed the story, and have a sense of a narrative whereby there was an incident involving an 18 + young man, who seems to have been an ‘altar server’, involving a drinks’ party and the presence of other senior clerics, in particular + Longley when he was an auxiliary in Westminster. There appears to have been an incident of Langham ‘french kissing’ this young man. Now, even giving Langham the benefit of the doubt as much as possible, and even entertaining the possibility that this young man was a bit of a tease / flirt and may even have occasioned the ‘french kiss’, there is still an unease and disquiet about a senior cleric such as Langham, who technically was the young man’s ’employer’ or superior, finding himself in such a situation where such a thing could happen. Even given it might have been initiated by the young man, it is the senior and more mature person’s responsibility, especially where there is a power / authority disparity, to ensure that these situations and circumstances do not arise. It’s called prudence. Inviting a young man to an intimate drinks’ party in his private quarters sets all the alarm bells going. That + Longley seems to have felt it necessary to calm things down by taking the young man out to dinner, a questionably imprudent invitation itself, suggests that there was a a need to calm things down because what happened was disquieting to all concerned. All of these facts of the narrative indicate a very ill advised and imprudent situation and actions on the part of the more mature and senior people there, including Langham. If such a thing had taken place in the world of work and business in which I am involved, particularly involving a senior person and someone more junior, it would not just raise eyebrows, it would be looked at closely, questions would be asked and the necessary action taken.
3. Maybe, just maybe, Langham’s removal to Rome from Westminster was occasioned by incidents such as these. It does, however, seem odd that it was thought wise to bring him back to take up a role as the chaplain at Cambridge University, where 18+ year old men abound !
4. There is no doubt that Langham was a talented and personable man, with the languid and gilded gifts that saw him considered to be part of the clerical glitterati of Westminster. It would appear, however, that there was another side to the coin that would manifest itself in the presence of young men and drink, and lead Langham to engage in imprudent behaviour. To this can be added the behaviour and lifestyle expected by the Church itself of its priests, namely purity and chastity of thought and action, and the whole situation just becomes more and more questionable.

Another name mentioned yesterday in connection with Langham / Cambridge etc was Fr. John Osman, one time chaplain at Cambridge himself and mate of Couve de Murville, who installed him in a grace and favour Georgian rectory with its own River Thames mooring at Dorchester on Thames. That was well over 25 years ago, and I believe Osman is still there. Nice work if you can get it. Talk about patronage, and nice things being given to those in favour ! Osman comes out of that Oxbridge set, teetering on the edge of naughtiness, surrounded by nice things, and nice people, and able to live a rather pleasant and effete lifestyle of fine food and wine, antiques and paintings, with a bit of lace, brocade, and Puginesque stencilling thrown in !

Like

There’s an interesting theme going on in the mention of Langham and Osman and others like them. In other words, the favoured, in receipt of nice episcopal patronage, and being given the comfortable, well endowed and plum jobs and parishes. It is a question of who you know, and how close you are to the source of patronage. I doubt if any of those nice London / Westminster parishes, or those Oxfordshire along the Thames parishes, are given to just anybody. The Catholic Church still works on the personal patronage model. There is no ‘best man for the job’ principle, no interviews, no assessments, nothing that you get in the rest of life and work. It run on whether the bishop like you, are you able to suck up to him, are you in the right circles with him. I think Osman is a priest of Leeds. Why is he not back up there ? God forbid, I bet he’s long shaken off the northern dust from his feet…..

Why hasn’t Osman been moved on after 25 years? Clergy see terrified of upsetting him!! When you say grace and favour do you mean the rectory isn’t owned by the diocese and was Coove the Smooths gift to give? Osman seems untouchable – more like a lord of the manor, 19th Century Squire, elitist, snobbish, Latin Massist, with a very short fuse and easily rattled!! Seems to despise the modern world and is in grip of severe nostalgia- like Jacob Rhys Mogg, a creature from another century.
He holidayed with Coove didn’t he and clearly has enjoyed a level of protection since then – he is a Leeds priest isn’t he but couldn’t stand the bishop (name escapes me) as I’m sure the bishop couldn’t stand him. Is Osman loaded? He comes from the landed gentry doesn’t he? If he was friend with Coove he’d know who’s closet is closed and whose a Friend of Dorothy – being a very friendly with Dorothy himself!! He and Langham must have either got on like a house on fire or loathed each other like two bitter old queens!! I should know I’m a bitter old queen myself – meow!!!

That privilege also applied to Mgr Alfred Gilbey, who was Cambridge Chaplain from 1933 – 66. Getting ordained under your own patrimony is long gone, but might be interesting to know when.

Case comes up for hearing in Rome 2024. Case dismissed due to Abbot no longer being in position and having returned to Roscrea.
This is the beauty of the monastic system. Imagine if Bishops served 6 year terms and then they reverted to priestly ministry (assuming they actually ministered as opposed to having just done done paperwork).

They just applied directly to St John’s College, Waterford, which took them in as unaligned first-years.

I am a Priest of over 20 years in Salford Diocese with good contacts in Lancaster where I regularly supply. I hear that Bishop Swarbrick of Lancaster Diocese is now getting very tired with the constant flow of letters and emails to his office and home about Rev Etienne, Administrator in Blackpool. I hear the main issues are:
1. General attitude towards others, considers himself high and mighty and talks down to people.
2. The re-naming of his Parish website to ‘Catholics in South Blackpool’ that deliberately did not include Our Lady
Of The Assumption’s Church, also in South Blackpool. This has caused locals to be very upset.
3. His general conduct towards females – openly verbalises that their only place in the Church is to clean it.
4. His wearing of black vestments and beretta during Mass.
5. He is determined to move the altar at St John Vianney’s away from facing the people so he can fully focus on the Latin Mass. The cost is going to be many thousands.
6. The nature of his relationship with Fr Robert Billing, ex-Bishop’s bag carrier and their alleged constant bitching about Parishioners and Clergy.
7. Acting outside the scope of his authority by planning to close down St Cuth’s Church despite the Bishop asking local Clergy to make recommendations about the future of the Deanery (related – why on earth can’t the Bishop just make his mind up? Asking Clergy which buildings are to go is like asking Turkeys to vote for Christmas).
8. He is now banned from 2 Primary Schools in his Parish after being aggressive towards staff, pupils and parents. The Schools now call on other clergy to minister.
9. His constant reminders to Parishioners around how to donate money and Mass stipends.
10. He has decided to breach COVID regulations by reinstating public Devotions when only Holy Mass is allowed.
11. His general lack of compassion and severe lack of communication skills.
12. His phoney Oxford accent that he uses to talk down to people.
I understand the Priests will never be everyone’s cup of tea, but never in my years have I heard about anyone behaving as badly or being the subject of so many complaints.
Questions must be asked about his suitability for office and wider questions regarding any red flags that were raised at the seminaries he attended.
Let’s hope for everyone’s sake the this young Priest is moved on to be under the guidance of an older and wiser Pastor as soon as possible. All he needs is some guidance and support. He is far too young, inexperienced and immature to be heading up 4 Parishes. I don’t really blame him – the Bishop has totally ignored the situation and must be held accountable.
I hear that he reads this blog, so pray for this young man and his Bishop. An intervention now will reap benefits in years to come.

I have heard of a priest who was this dysfunctional in the past. There was a cluster of parishes in Birmingham archdiocese in the eighties/nineties. There’s been sufficient concern expressed about Etienne over the last year or so that there really is something wrong with the boy, and it is the duty of the bishop to address the problem. The supposed Salford priest recommends he goes away to be tutored by a wise old Parish Priest and after a few more years he will be a new man like an episode of Bless Me Father! The reality is there isn’t a sunny Second Spring round the corner for the Church in seedy Blackpool, those parishes, their primary schools and the families are not producing any vocations to the priesthood, the buildings will close and the schools will close too

Like

Father G for a priest being ordained in 2000 or there about your blog at 2.06 is really in parts wrong or maybe it is how Bishop Arnold administers his dioceses. .
2. a group of parishes now gets called a cluster so it would be the South Blackpool cluster.
7. a bishop now consults the deanery and the laity over parish closures. (maybe you should read canon law)
9. every parish priest should be asking people if they can afford it to help the parish and in some cases the dioceses.
10. Blackpool Council and the Police would close him if he breached the regulations.
12. sad to pick on his voice.
Blackpool needs to close many parishes as it the holiday makers that kept most open.
The big problem here really is a bishop that is not doing his duty to ALL (clergy and lay faithful).
A gossiping bishop fed up with contact about Father Etienne, firstly it is his duty to support Father Etienne and the parishes. (where is the dean sleeping)
And I can assure you by a VG the bishop does not see a problem rather a victimisation of one of his priest so either you or i have been misinformed and my information comes from the dioceses.
Canon Dewhurst at the Sacred heart is not in good health so there will be big changes in Blackpool.
I think Annie Arnold is the worse bishop in the episcopate and sincerely hope he is not moved to Westminster

Oooohhh, I’ve loads more from where that came from ! Yes, he was big in to the VEC trustees’ stuff (good excuse for trips to Rome and Palazzola ! where I have to say he and others did a good job in putting the places on some firm financial and managerial footing), and as part of the Johnson Fund in Birmingham Archdiocese. Do remember that not every priest gets the JF grant. You have to be accepted and approved. Trusteeship of the JF is an advantageous and influential position among the clergy. Best to keep in with them. Also, the JF grant is a grant, and therefore tax exempt, so it does not figure in your income tax calculations. Nice work if you can get it !

RIP is a prayer used only by Catholics since Purgatory is a Catholic doctrine. Anglicans don’t believe in Purgatory so the prayer is meaningless for them. Therefore your breaking news is not to be trusted.
