Two very notable comments appeared on yesterday’s blog about Richard (Dick) Purcell of Mount Melleray.
One suggested that a farmer who rents land from the Cistercian Monastery in Roscrea (where Dick was abbot) was involved in a sexual relation with Dick.
“When I was a (lay) student in Maynooth Dom Richard was still at roscrea. Another (gay) student told me Dom Richard was riding (his words) a local farmer who was renting farm land from the monastery. I honestly thought it was the gossipy ranting of a gay man and there was no way a Cistercian would do that. Sadly it seems I misjudged….”
The other comment suggested that a prominent and respected Dominican, Father John Hyancath Walsh OP, who had been in Oxford with Dick said that Dick had chastity problems.

“Dom Purcell’s friend, Fr John Hyacinth Walsh OP, currently prior of St Saviours Dominican priory Dublin (also the studium) was overheard commenting on the Dom Dick scandal. He admitted that he (Dom Dick) did have problems with it (lack of chastity) in the past, but he though he had gotten over it. They had been in Oxford at the same time: walsh op in the English studium, Blackfriars: Dom Dick at st Benets Hall (EBC). Dom Dicks sexual activities were well known among catholic student circles in Oxford”.
The second comment also said that Dick was well known for his sexual activities among Catholic student circles in Oxford.

The allegations against Dick are piling up.
1. The original Boilerhouse sauna allegation.
2. The midnight sex in the kitchen of Roscrea with a Killaloe priest – which was confirmed to me personally during a telephone call with the Abbot General Eamon Fitzgerald.

The Abbot General has since suffered a total loss of voice!
3. There arises the continued talk of Richard Purcell’s behaviour at Oxford.
I’ve heard he was particularly found of Jesuits.
4. There now arises the question of an involvement with a farmer tenant at Roscrea.
How long will Richard Purcell and his superiors allow this saga to continue?
****
We would ask the comment makers on yesterday’s blog about Oxford and the Roscrea farmer please give us more information.

Dick Purcell doesn’t seem to have grasped the fact that if you have sex with people who know your name and what you do for a living then tongues will wag. It’s a form of careless arrogance as well as moral turpitude, unbefitting any human being, never mind a Cistercian monk, priest and abbot. How do three people keep a secret? Two of them need to have died.

A very insightful comment…but just one caveat: Purcell is more stupid than arrogant. And that stupidity derives from his pathological homosex drive.
As the Dominican friar featured on yesterday’s blog admitted, Purcell early had problems with chastity. Which means that he should not have been ordained, and might not have been so, had said Dominican friar the moral balls then to call out Purcell for his sexual promiscuity.

The peculiarity of Irish Cistercians at this time appears to be not whom they reject for entrance, but rather whom they admit. A case in fact is the apparently reckless reprobate who is currently the mitred prelate of Mt. Melleray Abbey.

More of the same, I’m afraid. I don’t expect these new revelations to have any purchase, not because they are not interesting or help to make the case, but because Purcell, the OCSOs, the local Bishop, the Vatican etc. know that there is nothing that anybody can do to force their hand. This is not a matter for the police, as no crime seems to have been committed. So, they can just sit it out. That is their game plan. Eventually it will go away. Then they can carry on as usual. That is how I expect this to play out. I’m not saying that is right, and I do think there are very serious questions to be asked about the behaviour of Purcell and the lack of action by the Church, but as it stands at the moment there will not be any movement forward. Perhaps the only thing that will have some influence and cause them to think again is…..yes, money ! So, if people feel strongly about this, then stop doing business with Mount Melleray, stop going to Mass there and contributing to their collections, stop buying their craft and monastic produce, stop going on retreat there when we are allowed to do that, in other words stop having any meaningful economic contact with them. After a few months of that, they will begin to take notice !

Yes and until then the fact the allegations are out in public allow prospective postulants to hear the clerical gossip about the community before applying.
What kind of Cistercian monastery would elect as abbot a man who spends his nights shagging? Not one you would join if you were at all serious about the life.

This was always my goal, and I have worked with single-minded zeal to bring about the ordination of such men as Wilson, Jones, and Byrne. These are MY men in Rome, fifth columnists who will help erode, among Catholics, faith and confidence in the Church, and therefore in Christ himself
Your Jesus may have said that the gates of Hell would never prevail against his followers, but what he did not tell these trusting fools was that Hell would nevertheless wreak terrible moral and spiritual havoc among them. And what better, what finer, way to achieve this than corrupting the clergy, especially the reputation of the clergy, with such men as those above.
HEAR ME, you Nazarene worshippers! TO ME YOU SHALL COME!
And you will be delivered into my unmerciful hands by the very priests you fed and clothed.

There is nothing “tedious and boring” about expecting people to live up to their publicly proclaimed commitments. Escaping culpability for one’s actions is not inevitable, it is rather a momentary reprieve before one faces the Most High God. St. Francis of Assisi said “We are what we are in the eyes of God and nothing else”. Only the truly humble are remorseful, rather than sashaying around in monastic and priestly robes, donned with a mitre and having a fistful of crozier.

Saint Augustine of Hippo, a Doctor of the Church, pleaded famously in his ‘Confessions’, which contains not only autobiographical details but also a philosophy of time (still of interest to philosophers), a psychology of memory and a theology of friendship, “Lord make me chaste, but not yet” and confided to his readers that he was guilty of sexual sins with a woman whom he did not name, and the fruit of their union was a dearly beloved son he called ‘Adeodatus’ … the ‘gift of God’. Where is the penitential honesty of our modern monks, unlike those of old who endured fasts and privations at which we Christians would balk? There appears to be a haughty and self-important disregard of holy religion and culpability seated in the abbatial chair of Mt. Melleray Abbey and the complicit support of a disingenuous and weakling abbot general, not to mention the local Ordinary, who appears to flagrantly disregard the well-being of his ‘portio populi Dei’.

Anon@11:34: Your esteemed Augustine, of whom you speak so reverentially was an ignoramus who dreamed up the cruel concept of “Limbo” claiming that the souls of unbaptised children were consigned to that place. His vicious and cruel theory was taken as truth and fact, causing untold misery to millions of Catholic parents for generations. His cruel dogma has only relatively recently been revised.
And this was an esteemed Doctor of the RCC!
Typical RCC’S bullshit.
LikeLike
Actually Marian Ann, what Augustine did was much, much worse than dream up Limbo. Augustine had the souls of unbaptised adults, even unbaptised babies, consigned forever to the fires of Hell. This view held considerable sway in the RCC for generations.
The theological concept of Limbo was devised much later by a church frankly embarrassed at the severity of Augustine’s teaching. But even this concept was, eventually and effectively, abandoned by the Church.
NO ONE in the institutional RCC has ever apologised to the Faithful for misleading them, for so very many years, on the matter of the eschatological destination of the unbaptised, nor for the centuries of distress and heartbreak these vile and erroneous teachings must have caused especially the parents of unbaptised babies.
But then, not one of these figures, including Pope Francis himself, has apologised for the centuries of magisterial, and erroneous, teaching on capital punishment.
How many souls were lost as a consequence of these corrupt teachings? We will never know. But it is these men, bishops and priests, who bear fundamental responsibility for this. And yet, not one of them has the humility and contrition to say ‘sorry’. Why? Because not one of them wants you to lose faith in him as an authoritative moral guide and guardian.

It’s rather interesting to observe this blog to find those who have a different opinion and offer an opposite viewpoint are quickly dismissed and often verbally abused and called petty names. Are we now living in North Korea or Russia? It’s unfortunate that Pat himself is sometimes guilty of this by describing valid points and questions simply as “cop out” etc. That’s too easy a rebuttal and it’s perfectly reasonable for people to seek hard evidence as opposed to allegations, hearsay and gossip. Is that not what proper justice entails: facts, truth and evidence. This post may not see the light of day because it challenges just like the Gospels do and many don’t like challenge. If it does see the light of day then I expect the predictable tirade of nastiness and put downs.

About the Job’s comforter comment above – people with interests in the situation of other monasteries are watching this with keen interest as a ‘test case’.
There are other monasteries whose superiors certainly shouldn’t be or even possibly in religious life and brethren and others have an interest in ousting unsuitable superiors kept there by weakness and corruption.
As long as 30 years ago a monk of a certain monastery was telling me the situation of his superior would only be solved by the Roman rota.
You may be bored but this has the potential to decide a different future for other monasteries.

In St. Benedict’s left hand on the medal fashioned in his name is his Rule for Monasteries that could well be summed up in the words of the Prologue exhorting monks and nuns to “walk in God’s ways, with the Gospel as our guide.” Have they heard of the Rule of St. Benedict in Mount Melleray Abbey, or indeed the Gospel? Current opinion seems to be that the leadership of the Cistercians in general and Mount Melleray Abbey in particular are the ‘stony ground’ into which these kernels have no purchase.

The Church evolved exactly as Christ foresaw and willed. He promised to be with the Church and that His Spirit would guard her. He warned us about scandals and what would befall those who give scandal. He appointed Peter alone as the rock. Peter alone was told to “strengthen the brethren”. To no other apostle or disciple did He say “feed my lambs….. look after my sheep”. The Church has withstood every attack from within and without and will not be prevailed against. Bad Popes have not prevailed. Corruption within has not prevailed. The hatred of the world has not and will not prevail.
