IS THERE A CISTERCIAN GAY MAFIA?

HAVE READERS NOT WONDERED, AS I HAVE, WHY THE CISTERCIAN ORDER OF THE STRICT OBSERVANCE HAVE TOLERATED THE CONTINUING PRESENCE OF AN ACTIVELY GAY ABBOT IN THEIR IRISH MOTHER HOUSE, MOUNT MELLERARY?

A contact in Rome to whom I asked this question recently answered: “Could it be because there us a very powerful gay rump in the Cistercians”?

As we proceed with this matter, which we will pursue to the bitter end, I am coming to the educated conclusion that Richard Purcell is not alone and that he is being protected by other actively gay Cistercians of differing ranks.

And of course, the corollary of that is that Richard Purcell probably has all this information – information that could cause many heads to roll.

If Purcell goes, how many other OCSO’s will he take with him, including members of other religious orders like the Dominicans and indeed diocesan priests and seminarians?

Purcell is another Gregory Collins – the Benedictine abbot of Jerusalem and a former monk of Glenstal – who found his position untenable after a liaison with a young Palestinian man. He is now a vicar in the Church of England. In the end Rome insisted he go.

The Cistercians have at least one semi- powerful episcopal supporter in the Vatican who has expressed an interest in protecting and saving Purcell and other compromised Cistercians.

This episcopal supporter is himself the object of many suspicions, one or two of which I am aware.

In any event, the Purcell matter is progressing (slowly as is Rome’s way) in Rome with the help of very competent canonical and civil lawyers.

This week I, myself, will be swearing my affidavit before a Belfast notary, recounting all I have learned over the past six months.

Other affidavits are being sworn in the Republic.

Pat this has been mentioned several times over the past year. It needs to be investigated further. The presence of underground tunnels, vaults and cages under Pugin Hall in Maynooth needs to be examined. Can I suggest you contact Catherine Corless who has great skills in investigating underground vaults. She could further expose the evil underbelly of the the RCC

There were also tunnels for lay staff to move about without being seen, historically.

Just finished watching the seven episode Netflix documentary series, The Keepers. I would highly recommend it as it explores the unsolved murder of Sr. Cathy Cesnick. It is also linked to the abuse of girls at a school in the Archdiocese of Baltimore by a now deceased priest called Joseph Maskell, a truly evil individual.
It deals with the seedy underbelly of the RC church and their obfuscation, lies and hypocrisy during the investigations into Maskell. If you have time, please watch it. It is a fascinating insight into what we are continuing to deal with today with the RC church. Plus ça change, plus c’est la meme chose.

Prinknash Abbeys Abbots kept disappearing and the Abbey not a healthy place for a heterosexual young man – my advice, run, run to the hills!! What is it about enclosed religious life that brings out the gay rump?!!

Like

The bringing out the gay rump thing actually goes back to the early days of monasticism. That’s why the early monks were literally alone.
Although I’ve always wondered whether people would gather to watch the stylites pee.
The traditional remedies are ‘mortification’, which I would think would inflame things even more and heavy manual labour.
I also wonder whether Prime was invented to stop the monks going back to bed, but not for more sleep!

+Pat if what you are alleging is true about Richard Purcell then you will have done the Irish Cistercians a great service.

Your blog the other day raised some valid questions.

Does Richard Purcell have the dirt on others who are therefore afraid to act against him?
Answer. YES.

Is it a cases that if Purcell, a constituent card in the pile, falls, others will fall?
Answer. YES.

Is the Abbot General, Eamon Fitzgerald, himself compromised on some way?
Answer. Possibly, but there is no proof at the moment. But if Purcell is going to be forced out he might become a singing canary. Gregory Collins must have realised it was in his long term best interests to remain silent about what he knew if he wanted an easy transition into the Church of England. Purcell he may not be minded to remain silent.

Why is it that the local ordinary of Mellerary, with a history of speaking out on moral issues, Phonsie, is now totally silence on this massive moral issue within his own diocese? The silence of Phonsie is curious. It is clear he is aware of the allegations but has deliberately chosen to remain silent. He does not have canonical authority but he does have moral authority.

The question you should have asked is Phonsie no longer arsed because was not appointed the Archbishop of Dublin? Moral crusading does not play ecclesiastical dividends.

The Keepers is amazing isn’t it – the two ladies in it reveal the best of the laity – the clergy it it the very worst of the clergy – before watching the Keepers I thought the Catholic clergy is a safe haven for predatory paedophiles and its senior clergy/bishops could be relied on to cover it up and I guess, if you pushed me, I’d have agreed that clerical paedophiles rings exist all over the world (they do I am sure of that) but and this is a big BUT, I wouldn’t have thought a priest would commit murder and then the hierarchy cover it up – after watching the Keepers I am convinced that murder is very much on the table if it means protecting the reputation of the Catholic Church.
Actually, the Keepers and coming across the Fr Patrick Fell and the bombing campaign he organized when serving as a curate in the Archdiocese of Birmingham at the height of the Troubles – nothing surprises me anymore about what the clergy and the hierarch are capable of.
The Keepers is the best of Netflix in my umble opinion!!

Quite a number of priests in Northern Ireland were involved in IRA terrorism. Some in the Republic of Ireland, too.

Why do people think it strange that a Roman Catholic priest would rape a boy or girl, and/or commit murder, even mass murder, as certainly at least one priest did in Northern Ireland, in the village of Claudy, Co. Londonderry, in 1972?

These hypocrites pledge obedience at ordination to a bishop, not to Christ. So moral turpitude and criminality should be expected from these Christ-betrayers.

Never, ever, trust a Roman Catholic priest. And NEVER leave him alone with children.

‘Elite group’ ! Are you taking the p***? Seriously. Elite for what?
Bishop Buckley has highlighted on this blog, for years, samples of abuse, corruption and criminality in the Institutional Catholic Church. So, if you think moral cowardice, hypocrisy, systemic covering up for clerical criminals or obstructing the course of justice, world wide,
is to be considered elitist, then maybe it is, in the criminal underworld. Your welcome to it, sunshine. The days when priests were considered an elite group are well and truly over, unless you are deluded, in denial or plain stupid. Now, we won’t mention those in the elite group who, ‘played the game to be ordained’, such as McCarricks proteges. Surely such carry on wouldn’t go on in Ireland or Britain, particularly among those seeking a mitre.
Or, would it?

All of these bishops and superiors have their own reasons for not intervening in matters that are brought to their attention. Mostly, it is the long tried and tested play book of doing nothing and saying nothing in the hope that it will all go away. By and large it does, for a certain time. But, as + Pat has said before, almost inevitably something big occurs that brings the whole pile of shit to the surface again, and then it all has to be dealt with. Take the child abuse phenomenon. Ignored for so long. Until, something big happens, and then it is all looked at again. It will out eventually, and it will not reflect well on those who have not addressed it in a timely and responsible fashion. Maybe some of them are hoping they will be long dead when the accounting comes ? Somebody, however, will have to carry to can.

Like

Yes they will.
The congregation or order thing actually weakens the way monasteries following Benedict should work. With each monastery autonomous, if one monastery loses sight of what they should be doing, it will either be reformed, or else observant monks will transfer out and then it will start to scandalize the faithful and eventually either be suppressed or fizzle out. if an abbot president is involved, and he is weak, all the monasteries in the grouping will decline together.

There is a perception deeply rooted that a priest has forsaken heterosexual sexual marriage for the kingdom of God – – this is a myth – the majority like Abbott’s Purcell and Collins had no intention of forsaking seeking sexual partners made readily available within the so called celibate priesthood – the theology of the priesthood is a gloss to cover over and mislead the laity and promote a gay promiscuous clerical culture – here’s a question; when Fr is having his day off which gay sauna does he frequent?

Hi Pat
I grew up in a large town in NI. It was mainly Protestant. I am a catholic but have lived in London for over 25 years now.
As a child I used to be taunted by my Protestant playmates about priests ‘riding the nuns’ in our local convent. They also jeered that priests were ‘fond of wee lads’ They also talked about a home in Belfast where girls who had been impregnated by priests were sent to have their children.
These boys and girls had obviously picked up this chat from parents and elders.
It disgusted me when I heard this talk which I assumed to be lies and made up.
Sadly, with the passing of time and the torrent of revelations now forthcoming, I think they were right and my defence of my church clergy was ill founded.
Nothing about priests and bishops now would surprise me.

Thank you Ealing Resident. The true believers here would like to think that screaming ‘lies’ can stop experiences like yours. The fact is your experience is very common and the church has totally failed to engage with how it happens. This is of course good news because the ranks of those who are not taken in by the spin can only swell as further revelations come out.
I have forgotten the writers name but I read a piece some years ago by a lady who was hearing mass at Ealing Abbey and was thinking about what it would mean for her if the priests hands had been abusing children. The priest celebrating the mass was David Pearce.

@10.31 I think you are being unfair to Purcell and Collins. Both men probably (I hope) entered the monastery with good intentions but were corrupted by those responsible for their formation or what was latent found a forum for expression, which has been and always will be contrary to what is essential to the monastic vocation Collins is a product of Glenstal which has always been “interesting” but this “culture” has never been present in the Irish Cistercians. I am disappointed to learn about this behaviour in the Irish Cistercians. I am not suggesting there has not been Irish gay Cistercians in the past but none of them were “allegedly” frequenting gay saunas in Dublin and having sex with visiting priests in the monastic guesthouse. Purcell should publicly deny Buckley’s allegations or he should leave the monastery and the priesthood. The problem is people like Purcell and Collins would never make it in the real world. Will Purcell be the first Irish abbot to minister as a Church of Ireland curate this century?

callous lack of empathy, as well as inhumanity of so many clerics/ hierarchs towards victims/survivors of clerical abuse be frightening, considering priests claim to be ‘other Christs’. It is quite obvious, the clerical brotherhood, money, status and power comes first while Gospel imperatives of Christ Jesus seem of little or no consequence, to be ignored
willy nilly. Now, giving scandal to the Christian community is not even taken seriously.

I don’t think you can compare Gregory Collins with Richard Purcell, e.g., alleged visits to the Boilerhouse hasn’t caused a diplomatic incident or resulted in fire-raising at Mt Melleray. Of course, it would be better if monks, or at least the abbot, kept to their vows and don’t go putting it about, but this is 2021. I am more concerned about these monastic queens conning folk out of money. Will you have an update on Silverstream soon, Bp Pat?

Pat, where is your evidence that “in the end Rome insisted that he (Collins) go.” Would the Glenstal community not have had to vote on re-admitting him to Glenstal stability? Did they vote? What was the outcome, if they did?

+Pat, I have been following the saga about Richard Purcell with anger. When your affidavit is done please scan and send a copy to every abbot and abbess of the monasteries that speak English and the older houses of the congregation in France.

You can write a brief note explaining the allegations made against Purcell; explain the legal significance of an affidavit. Then you might suggest that they write to the Abbot General DEMANDING that he exercises his jurisdiction to remove Purcell and to copy their letter to the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life. The email and postal addresses of these monasteries are available on the Cistercian website. But in case they are removed I have spent the morning copying and pasting them into a Microsoft Word document so they are available.

Dom Eamon Fitzgerald will only act because he has been shamed into action. And if he is compromised he can like Purcell also resign and the constitutions of the congregation to deal with the impairment of the Abbot General can be invoked. It is no big deal. Make sure that every house in the Order of the Cistercians of the Strict Observance knows about the allegations about Richard Purcell. Let us see how deep the coverup goes. But this blog needs to keep the pressure on Purcell and by extension Fitzgerald

Fitzgerald is on borrowed time. He was 63 when he was elected Abbot General 13 ago. This should have been a general chapter to elect his successor last year but that was delayed due to the pandemic. His ecclesiastical friends in Rome when he becomes toxic will be among the first to desert him that is always the Roman way.

Your entitled to think I’m being unfair to Purcell and Collins just as I am entitled to hold to the view that the Catholic priesthood is a gay profession, in and of itself, orientation is neutral, what’s unacceptable is the hypocrisy of acting out their homosexuality (often) in a predatory and hedonistic fashion (gay saunas etc). I believe that whilst we may comfort ourselves that men like Purcell and Collins entered the religious life with great zeal and enthusiasm to be faithful to their vows i disagree as I think that they know intuitively and instinctively that they know deep down sooner or later they will act out etc. The Catholic priesthood is the brewery and they are alcoholics and you wouldn’t put an alcoholic in charge of a brewery!!

Like

Wow you’ve reminded me of Dom Bede Vela of Farnborough who used to say homosexuals shouldn’t be admitted to the monastery because it’s like letting an alcoholic loose in the wine cellar.
And we’ve all seen how that worked out at his monastery lol

Like

@1:13pm Did they find him (Bede Vela) drunk in the wine cellar? Bede was essentially harmless I think, unless you, dear reader, know different, but that his words are a case of Pot Calling the Kettle Black is beyond doubt in my mind. When watching tv and the footballers in the sport report would embrace, Bede would let out the most disgusting chortle. He called me, then D. Thomas Wood “Tom Arse” and D Cuthbert “Cuth Bot” On my first night he beckoned me to his room where he kissed me and told me there was no need to tell anyone because there was nothing wrong with it and I, rather gobsmacked, decided I just wanted to forget about it and get back to enjoying the life as I had done while visiting. It never happened again. Later, I heard that he was replaced as sacristan and MC after some altar servers raised concerns. I believe poor Bede suffered under Brogan in later years. He had a generous and friendly nature too, once taking me to visit The Baltic Exchange where he used to work. I think the IRA later blew it up. But should Bede have been a monk? ~ Tom Wood

A letter from the former abbot of Downside came out at IICSA in which he did describe a ring of ‘homosexuals’ in the abbey. Given the context and that Downside didn’t manage several paedophiles properly, it isn’t completely clear whether he was referring to homosexuals per se or homosexual paedophiles.
The abbot of Prinknash thing wasn’t half as disturbing to my mind because according to papers at the time he made a pass at an adult male guest.
Either way the history of modern monasticism in decline will read like a mediaeval account of monasticism gone off the rails.
If any young person wants to be a monastic I would advise them to learn a trade where they can work from home, such as graphic design, and devote themselves to the Psalms.

I’m not saying a homosexuals shouldn’t be admitted to the priesthood – I’m saying the culture promotes homosexuality and hypocrisy and attracts them – it is possible to be a homosexual and heterosexual and not act out – it’s the hypocrisy and double life it promotes that’s the issue – Bernard of Clairvaux was a homosexual – as was John Henry Newman – I mean Newman couldn’t marry his boyfriend but my God he was going to make sure he was buried with him!! I met a priest once who told me with pride and glee that Couve had interviewed him for the priesthood and ‘looked me up and looked me down’ like they were both eyeing each other up – needless to say the priest in question seem to always live in the poshest most pretentious and comfortable presbyteries in the Archdiocese – go figure girlfriend!!

There is a clerical mindset that creates its own spectrum of sexual offences and how ‘disturbing’ or ‘serious’. they are – an unwanted sexual advance by an Abbot on a house guest falls into the category of a sexual assault and trust me is both disturbing and criminal.
I am hoping and praying that good sense and justice prevails and that the British Government don’t lift the ban on Ampleforth accepting any more children – no pupil is safe with a monastery and monks having access to children – if they do relent – history will judge the decision to have been disastrous – many monks are sexual predators of children and young men!!

It is right that the sexual misdemeanours of those who are “purportedly” leading a monastic way of life is challenged. I could forgive/overlook a single failing, but the reported comments of the Irish Dominican Fr Walsh as mentioned on this blog a few days ago suggests nothing has changed in Richard Purcell’s life since he was a student at Oxford. And he remains sexually active. But if the allegation concerning his involvement with the farmer in the Roscrea area is true he is a man who derives satisfaction from dangerous and risky sex. It is horrible to be writing these words about an Irish Cistercian.
On the Facebook page of Mount Melleray Abbey it is possible to make a donation. Nobody should be giving any money to Mount Melleray Abbey until this issue is resolved. Either Purcell/Fitzgerald publicly deny these allegations or Purcell resigns as abbot and take some time out to consider his position. If it is true that Fitzgerald is compromised then he should resign also.
