WATERFORD DIOCESE – FINANCE AND COLLUSION ISSUES.

Phonsie of Waterford has a very controversial In Tray just now.

1. NO MONEY TO PAY PRIEST’S WAGES:

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Priests in the Diocese rely on the offerings of the people to live. With the suspension of public Masses, there is little money coming in for the payment of clergy. I know that this is a difficult time for most people. If however, you would like to make a donation towards the payment of priests at this time we have made this online payment facility available.

I also have in mind various projects for spreading the faith in the Diocese and for this we need to employ a Youth-Ministry Officer and a Faith-Development Officer. These roles are vital to help change the negative culture that surrounds us and to let people know God’s message of truth and mercy. If you would like to help support these and other diocesan initiatives, you can contribute to Bishop’s Evangelisation Appeal below.

I would like to thank you in advance for your support and generosity.

Yours Sincerely,
Bishop Phonsie

Waterford is facing a problem most dioceses are facing – reduced income due to closed churches etc.

That is bound to continue and get worse.

Many people will not return to Mass when the lockdown is lifted.

They have developed the habit of not coming.

THE SCANDALS

Nearly everyday a new scandal comes out of the RCC.

Every scandal sends more people away from church.

And Phonsie has his very own big scandal in his diocese with MOUNT MELLERARY and RICHARD PURCELL.

The scandal has been reported to Phonsie who seems to have done nothing about.

Why give a man who does not sort out scandals any more noney.

Let Phonsie sell assets to pay his priests – churches, presbyteries, hall etc.

2. AN INVESTIGATION INTO WHETHER OR NOT A DIOCESAN PRIEST AND GARDA COLLUDED TO PROTECT A PAEDOPHILE.

Sadly, this collusion scandal involved my old friend Monsignor John Shine 😭

JOHN SHINE RIP

John Shine’s nephew, the Waterford sports coach, Bill Kennealy, was a prolific paedophile.

Kennealy

The Garda knew about him for years abd did nothing.

The suggestion is that Monsignor Shine may have colluded with senior Garda to prevent Kennealy from being prosecuted?

Shine was a good, kind pastoral man but as a canon lawyer he had a blind spot when it cane to savibg the good name of the church and people he was loyal too.

He had a misguided idea that it was better to sort things out quietly and privately.

That’s what the Church did in the past.

Anyway, the whole thing is now to be subject to a judicial enquiry.

3. AN ABBOT ACCUSED OF GAY SEXUAL ACTIVITY.

PURCELL AND PHONSIE

Purcell is a VERY BIG problem for Phonsie.

Phonsie has been contacted by people asking him to sort the Phonsie problem out.

Phonsie has given no indication that he is doing anything about this big scandal.

People are asking WHY?

People are asking is Phonsie is compromised in any way?

Over to you Phonsie.

I should like to donate to Bishop Cullinan’s appeal for money for his priests. It isn’t money, though, that I should donate, but wise and necessary advice:

GET OFF YOUR INDOLENT BACKSIDES AND FIND SALARIED EMPLOYMENT, YOU SLOTH OF USELESS SPONGERS!

Most of you are not required for full-time ministry; the rest ought to be supporting themselves, like everyone else of working age.

And Bishop Phonsie, thanking anyone in advance for making a generous financial donation is not only presumptuously arrogant, but strictly not de rigueur. Didn’t your momma and poppa teach you any etiquette?

Ah, the Carmelites of the Holy Face. I was wondering when they would appear here. Have a look at the newsletters on their website, they’re wild!
I don’t think they’re related to the Palmarian church who use the same name (they’re not that wild) but are certainly good at being thorns in the side. Pat, even you would have difficulty being that thorny!

+Pat, interesting to read about the Diocese of Waterford being extremely short of cash. No surprises there! They cannot be the only diocese in Ireland in a similar situation. I am impressed that you are highlighting some of the issues surrounding the late Monsignor Shine. He was a product of his time and perhaps he was informed by the desire to protect a family member. But objectively it does not look good. The full terms of reference of the inquiry are available by following the link below.

Why is Phonsie talking about employing a Faith Development Officer and a Youth Development Officer, tow fine titles with two medium salary roles ? Has he not got priests who could do those jobs, surely ? I thought that those areas would be the kind of roles that a priest could do ? In to the bargain, these roles seem to be connected to some Evangelisation push. Well, rather than finding trendy titles and roles, why not just encourage his priests to be good and holy men, saying their prayers, and being out and about being pastoral, compassionate and caring. Surely that would be a good Evangelisation initiative in itself ? Instead of priests sitting on their arses, doing very little, living very nicely, and a good number of them engaging in extra curricular activities.

The oldest trick in the charlatans playbook is ‘we’re flat broke’ or ‘we have no money’ – this mantra is drummed into them in seminary and they swallow it hook line and sinker – then they get a parish and have sole access to the parish cheque book to the correct and savings account – oh and various other accounts hidden from view and they realize they aren’t broke but loaded – but instead of informing the pray, obey and pay brigade of their good fortune – the mantra gets rolled out time and time again – its the oldest trick in the clerical playbook – financial transparency will never happen – opaque and dark is how they like their money – think I’m wrong? Check out their reserves – Westminster and the Gubay fund – half a billion easy, Liverpool and Birmingham 100 million easy!! Clifton – 40 million – and that’s cash – before the sale of a single presbytery or church!! The Jesuits and Benedictines are the same – half a billion!!
The true scandal is the money – follow the money and that’s when it gets really ugly and scandalous – oh and the Vatican they are a million times worse – despite posturing about regulation etc. Mafia, greedy prelates, dodgy deals, nepotism, back handlers, and that’s just the Cardinals!!

Like

The Jesuits are very well endowed ! I’m not sure of the exact state of play but the sale of their Heythrop College property in Kensington is going to bring in hundreds of millions. At the moment they are renovating a property in Birmingham – Manresa House – essentially demolishing all but the original Victorian / Georgian villa and building something like 25 ensuite rooms and communal areas, all going to be very nice looking. I believe it is for a novitiate. Now, I’m not begruding any of this, but please do not let us be taken in by the line that the Church, its dioceses, its religious orders etc. are struggling. The reality is that they are sitting on huge piles of cash and assets, all for a good mission reason, but they are not poor and they are not struggling ! Simple ! The other point is that all of this money – yes, all of it – has come from the faithful as donations. It has not come from the Church itself.

10.33am One error in your post spoils its relevance and puts your understanding of what is occurring in Jesuit circles in grave doubt. The error is this: Heythrop College is not in Kensington. It lies a stones throw from Oxford Street and is therefore in Marylebone. I hope that has put matters right and reminded you to check apparent fact before posting on this blog.

The gist of the post you criticised is as relevant as ever. Your attempt at distraction failed, ‘Father’.

Like

You are very wrong, @3.47 and hopelessly out of date. You are thinking of the former location of Heythrop, which was behind John Lewis on Oxford St, but years ago they moved to Kensington, into a former convent. Heythrop is now closed (Vatican II renewal in action) and the property has been sold. When the Assumption nuns sold it to the SJs they cunningly inserted a covenant to ensure that they would claw back some of the proceeds of any increase in value if the property was ever sold.

Isn’t there supposed to be a sharing out of Gubay money to the dioceses in England and Wales. I know that my diocese keeps going on about big redevelopment of their cathedral and offices site, and I think the confidence comes from what they are going to get from the Gubay funds. Actually, I don’t think that what already exists is that bad, but they seem intent on some major redevelopment. I do wonder about their priorities sometimes. A bit like Phonsie and his Evangelisation initiative, trying to look as though he is doing something, and that usually means spending money. Remember, it’s not Phonsie’s money, or the dioceses’ money morally speaking. They are just trustees of it. But, sometimes, bishops act as though they are free to spend as if it were there own.

A Faith Development Officer! What is this “faith” thing that needs to be “developed?”
In the RCC context indoctrination into “faith beliefs” begins in childhood when innocent trusting children are fed biblically based religious beliefs. They unquestiongly ‘follow the herd’ of parent, church, educational and other significant authoritative figures.
Unquestioned childhood beliefs are assimilated and strengthened by familial and neighbourhood practices linked to rites of passage. They thus become psychologically and emotionally embedded as faith beliefs woven into familial and communal practices.
If subjected to objective critical analysis, the tenets of such beliefs, together with their alleged foundational basis can be seen as a hotchpotch of deluded mistruths largely fostered by a cadre of self selected and self serving elite priestly caste taking advantage of human insecurities. How many of the “faithful ” ever take a long hard look at the absolute unbelievable rubbish they are expected to believe: for example; that a priest who, by any measure, is a lying thieving immoral individual, yet by his ontologically changed ordination can say some formulaic words to thereby summon the God Creator to be present in a wafer!!!!
So dip your hand in your pockets folks. We all need to support these “Faith Development………

First, no one here is anti-Church…in the correct, ecumenical-council-approved meaning of the word. Your interest is the clergy, ‘Father’, which you clearly, and wrongly, believe constitute the Church. Yes, there is anti-Church feeling in THIS sense; and rightly so, since the clergy are not the Church. They are a very tiny, but deeply corrupted and compromised, part of it. And your post proves it.

As for financial donations, your post justifies the anger and contempt for clergy expressed here. You admit that money is at least sufficent, if not plentiful (‘We are surviving…’; parishoners are not just super generous, but ‘extra generous’), and yet priests are looking for still more money. How much is enough, ‘Father’, to support your indolence and workshyness? That’s the point, isn’t it? You don’t work for a living, but sponge off those who do. So the acquisition of money (the fact that it has to be earned through one’s labour and isn’t just handed out gratis, as it is to you and your fellow priests), means that none of you knows its true value. And so you keep demanding more and more of it…until it becomes your god, along with a corrupt institution. And you express no shame in doing so.

You and others continue to bleed parishoners financially in particularly trying times, and all you can do is say ‘God bless them’. But if he does, he won’t bless your cruel leeching off them.

Get a job, ‘Father’, and earn your own money.

Many people in Ireland are acutely short of money but the hypocrisy of Bishop Cullinan in seeking money is shocking. I have sympathy with any priest who is being faithful to his vocation that is in financial difficulty. Those priests should be supported. But one could not think of a worse possible interlocutor than Bishop Alphonsus Cullinan. Anybody who is being intellectually honest would recognise there is very little moral or pastoral leadership in Ireland from our bishops but it is difficult to identify a bishop who embodies the negative attributes of Pharisaism than Bishop Alphonsus Cullinan.
Consistently, has failed to show any moral leadership in his diocese. It is always possible to do the right thing so it still is not too late for Cullinan to remove the faculties of Richard Purcell the increasingly infamous abbot of Mount Melleray Abbey to minister in the Diocese of Waterford and Lismore. It was mentioned in the blog yesterday Dom Eamon Fitzgerald the (indifferent) Abbot General of the Cistercians will be required to retire at the next General Chapter. If/when Dom Fitzgerald does return to Mount Melleray Abbey to see out the rest of his mortal days if Bishop Alphonsus had any moral backbone he should also prohibit Fitzgerald from having faculties in the diocese. While he has no jurisdiction over Mount Melleray Abbey, Bishop Alphonsus does have jurisdiction over those who function as priests in his diocese. He should make an example of Purcell and Fitzgerald. At the moment like most Irish bishops he is just another spineless coward.
Likewise if Purcell is innocent he should publicly back him by refuting Buckley. And that would also require moral courage an attribute not found in the leadership of the Diocese of Waterford and Lismore.

Dublin Diocese still seems to be employing 19 lay Pastoral Workers, mainly in parishes/pastoral areas. There had been a plan to make them all redundant. They are hard-working, committed professionals, who take the burden off the PP and other clergy. They generally have to find their own accommodation and transport, commuting between churches and working evenings and weekends. I hope the new archbishop will keep them on and ensure their pay and conditions are adequate.

Be careful of assuming that anybody who critiques the Catholic Church is anti-Catholic or simply a naysayer- I’ve not beeen flushed out of anywhere (the undertone of sewer) or anyone!! I’m neither a non Catholic, a lapsed Catholic, a hater or a racist – neither am I angst ridden or in a rage about the Catholic Church’s finances and no danger of a heart attack here – I’m in fine fettle – do you think Pope Francis is any of the things you so liberally accuse us of – he’s been trying to reform the financial corruption at the Vatican since he took office – as we speak there the Serious Fraud Office are investigating the sale of a property portfolio in Chelsea bought by the Vatican – do you think Westminster Finance Department aren’t across this in one way or the other – do you think that committed Catholics aren’t disturbed by the lack of financial proprietary and financial safeguarding? Of course we are – beware of protesting too much and squealing when you perceived an attack on the Church’s probity – because it gives the impression that you’ve got something to hide – beware too of assuming and presuming on the generosity of lay people – remember we have ears and we hear, eyes and we see!! Oh and when a bishop, Diocesan Treasurer or Chief Operating Officer (on £100,000 by the way) say ‘We’ve no money et’ know that no one believes him!!

Like

I’ve been thinking about the Purcell matter. What + Pat is saying about Purcell is pretty serious. It goes to the heart of Purcell’s probity, his seriousness, his honesty etc. etc. So, I would have thought if what +Pat was saying was just a load of old tosh, and seriously detrimental to the reputation of Purcell, then Purcell would push back ? If somebody was saying such seriously damaging things about me and I knew them to be false, then I would take that person on. Isn’t it interesting that of all the people that appear on the blog and who delight us with their antics day after day, not one of them is prepared to show that what is being said is untrue and detrimental to them by challenging +Pat. Because that would mean having to go to court and swear and oath. I don’t think they want to do that, because they know that what is being said about them is true, and they would have to lie on oath, with very serious consequences in law. So, given that Purcell and others don’t seem to have the balls or the certainty of their case to stand up and challenge what is being said about them, I deduce that what is being said is true. They know it, we know it, everybody knows it.

The closest anyone has got was the solicitor’s letter from captain y-fronts. His solicitors would have given him the advice contained in Pat’s reply, that there is no point suing someone with no assets.
Another case is the Abbess of Farnborough who made the owners of the original Another Abbot Extraordinary blog cave in with a solicitors letter. He has not done this to Tom – and again to sue someone they have to have assets but also be saying things which aren’t true.

If Purcell had proof it wasn’t true he could force Pat to print an apology and retraction. Pat has given him the option of an unedited right of reply on the blog, why hasn’t he taken Pat up in his offer. Saves paying the hyenas that populate the four courts. In fairness to Pat if Purcell contacted him with proof the allegations were false I have no doubt that Pat would publish an immediate retraction.

I think he had a cheek (sorry no pun intended !) to send a solicitor’s letter to + Pat. Can’t the man take a bit of ribbing ? After all, didn’t he probe seminarians about their most intimate thoughts and experiences – and probably whether they were wearing Y fronts, hipsters or boxers – so why can’t he bear a bit of probing himself ? I saw him once, and never mind about u/pants, I was astounded at his ball crushingly tight trousers ! How he managed to walk, I never know ! 3. She is an ex-Anglican vicar, now a PP in rcdow, within commuting distance of the West End.

4. She is not one of the now ageing brigade, who came over en masse in 1995.

5. She does not use a walking stick.

6. So it seems the character may be in her 50s or 40s, being ordained at some time since 2000.

7. No obvious candidates. I would rule out Fr Daniel, who was not a PP when this came out, but has since replaced the Pole in North London.

6.09 I am amazed you think I would betray something said in confidence. Clues will appear on this blog. It is for you to determine their relevance to a place-name. ‘Eaten with onions’.

You really are a pompous twat aren’t you. A gentleman wouldn’t leap on the internet displaying his knowledge of something said in confidence at all. in fact I think you’re just yet another of the Westminster queeny gossips.

Cardinal Nichols will not be in Westminster for 3 – 5 years.
Some Bishops want him to go now.
This likely his last Chrism Mass.

It was of one of two spiritual directors at Oscott – I’m sorry I don’t know his name – he’s a dead ringer of the vicar Richard Cole’s – it was taken at a party – he’s wearing black tights and red lipstick and his dog collar – he’s in the middle of two girls having the craic with him – he’s holding a glass of wine – it’s actually a fun photo – he’s smiling and looks happy, it made me laugh but sadly didn’t stay up for long – it went up around the time that Marsden and Oakley thing was kicking off – when a poster mentioned PP in drag it came to mind – and it reminded me that when I saw the photograph here I thought that’s a man who enjoys dressing up as a lady (Little Britain). It was in stark contrast to other photos of him and PR for Oscott in which he is v serious and overly pius.

The priest to the left is called Fr James – the bishop is McMahon – Fr James is the one who was dressed in drag – he looks a little bit like the vicar Richard Cole (at least I think he does) but looks like butter wouldn’t melt in his mouth in this picture – maybe at night and at parties at Oscott his lady parts come out to play!!

Pat the Church is finished. The Lord has left his Temple. I believe the Catholic Church was/is of Christ’s doing. Maybe a bit of him is still in it, if so it will be in the parishes not the central offices. Parishes such as mine I hope. But I hope the alcohol will take me one night and I won’t wake up again. As long as I enter the courts of the Lord. I will sing “Alleluia”

Pat I don’t feel well. I know I can phone you or text but I don’t feel like it. The wine cheers me up so, but only for so long. I’m hitting the sack now anyhow. Good night.

+ Pat, even if they were desperate and you had the cash, I am sure no Irish bishop would sell you a church — just out of spite and obduracy.
