A priest caught masturbating in his car at Blackrock in Salthill received a one month suspended sentence at Galway District Court.

Jerry Carey (60), with an address in Nenagh, Co. Tipperary, pleaded guilty to intentionally engaging in offensive conduct of a sexual nature.

The court heard that on August 3 of last year, Gardaí received a report of a man masturbating at Blackrock, where Mr Carey was caught in his car.

Mr Carey’s solicitor said that his client was “shocked and remorseful” at his own behaviour, and felt deeply ashamed. That day he had come up to visit Galway

He stepped aside from his professional duties as a priest immediately afterwards, and had been dreading this day for the six months the solicitor added.

At the time he was under a lot of stress due to recent health issues, the court heard. He had no previous criminal convictions, and had never come to Garda attention.

Judge Mary Fahy said that Blackrock is a public area, where families go to swim and relax by the beach, and that this type of behaviour is “highly upsetting” for people to see in public.

She accepted that he was in his own car, but added that he could clearly be seen, as someone reported him to the police.

Judge Fahy sentenced Mr Carey to one month in prison, and suspended the sentence for a year, on the condition that he stay away from the area of the offence.

The court granted leave to appeal the sentence, with recognisance fixed at €200 of his own bond.

KNIGHT MONAHAN

CHAPLAIN

Fr. Jerry Carey is our school chaplain. Fr. Jerry can be seen (and heard) in the Leaving Cert area each day at breaktime. He is a familiar face in our school community and is called upon in times of joy and sadness. He works closely with the pastoral care team in the school.

Together with members of the teaching staff he accompanies our school tour abroad each year. Mission week and in particular the Buzz Club couldn’t take place without him. Through his work and contact with the school Fr. Jerry endeavours to create links with the local parish and school.

Enormous credit is due to Fr. Jerry for our new prayer room. This is viewed as a little oasis of calm within the school where individuals or groups can find peace and calm to reflect and pray in moments of necessity. Here too we mark different seasons of the year – November remembrance month, Advent and Lent. Mass is celebrated here each morning before the state exams.

Fr. Jerry also organises the annual youth pilgrimage to Taize, France in July. The pilgrimage is supported by many of our past pupils.

Every effort is made to provide students with a relevant, challenging and thorough religious education. Retreats, Liturgies and Prayer Services are central to school life. We are fortunate in having a dedicated team of Religion teachers who work with our school chaplain to make all this happen.

BISHOP FINAN MONAHAN – NO ACTION

In spite of Father Carey’s beach masturbation the Bishop of Killaloe, Fintan Monahan, still has the priest listed as a Co Parish Priest in the Ennis area and STILL as chaplain to the large girl’s school in Ennis Colaiste Mhuire!

Father Carey brings 50 + girls on holiday every year to Taize in France.

Here, below, in Monahan praising the trips.

PAT SAYS:

This incident is a personal tragedy for Father Carey, to which he greatky contributed.

It is also a shock for his parishioners and for the staff and students of Colaiste Mhuire in Ennis.

Father Carey has, obviously, seriously unresolved psychosexual issues.

However, it has serious reprecussions for his priesthood.

The word among the Killaloe clergy is that Monahan was hooibgbit woukd not get into the public areba.

Monahan is now hoping he will simply retire to his native Birr in Co. Offaly.

He cannot serve in a parish again.

He cannot be a school chaplain and bring groups of girls on holiday.

FINTAN MONAHAN was hoping that this would not come into the public arena.

Father Carey attended Galway court as MR. CAREY.

Why did Fintan Monahan not visit Father Carey’s parish and tell the people what was happening?

Did Monahan inform the Colaiste Mhuire principal of the what had happened?

Is Monahan one of the old fashioned cover uppers?

A Killaloe priest told the blog last night:

“Lugs is on dangerous ground. Vos Estis Lux Mundi has a process for bishops who mishandled allegations”.

SERIOUS QUESTION?

Has Fintan Monahan and/or his predecessors O’Reilly and Walsh, received any historical complaints against Father Carey from Ennis residents now resident in the UK?

This is a serious question?
