FATHER JERRY CAREY – KILLALOE DIOCESE – STATEMENT OF FINTAN MONAHAN.

SUBMITTED BY READER

The story of the conviction of Father Jerry Carey appeared on this blog on Tuesday evening March 2 nd.

Monahan met with his advisers yesterday morning, March 3rd and after the meeting the following statement was issued.

Statement of Bishop Fintan Monahan on the Conviction of Fr. Jerry Carey, Monday, 1st  of March, 2021

“Fr. Jerry Carey has been a priest of the diocese of Killaloe for the past 37 years.  He was convicted today, in the district court in Galway of indecent exposure in a public place.  He received a one month suspended sentence.

Fr. Carey has sincerely apologised for his behaviour and deeply regrets the damage caused by his actions.

As bishop of Killaloe, I acknowledge the upset and distress caused to his parishioners, the priests and the many people to whom he ministered in the diocese.

On behalf of the diocese I wish to apologise for the hurt caused by this crime and what is highly unacceptable behaviour.

Once the incident came to light, Fr. Carey stood down from ministry and immediately engaged in a therapeutic course of assessment and counselling, which continues. Once the criminal proceedings are concluded a canonical process will follow.

If there is anyone who has been affected by any of these issues, you are encouraged to contact the diocese or relevant authorities”.

SOME QUESTIONS THAT ARISE:

1. Did Monahan hope that the story would not get out in the media in general and on this blog?

2. Had it not got out – Carey did attend the Galway’s court as a “Mr. Carey of Nenagh” – even though his only connection with Nenagh is that he has been lying low in the presbytery there – would Monahan have let the whole thing slide and slot Carey back into the clerical club quietly and slowly?

4. Why do Carey’s picture and details remain until today on the website of Colaiste Muire in Ennis – six months after his arrest for a sexual crime?

If Carey stepped aside from ministry six months ago why are both websites treating him as a current PP and chaplain ?

5. Who is paying for Carey’s ON GOING therapy and counselling – a question raised by a blog reader by enail yesterday?

6. Is Father Carey still on a full Killaloe clerical salary?

7. When and where will Father Carey’s secret canonical trial take place.

Fintan Monahan has made one move – to redesignate Carey on the diocesan website:

But if he is off the mission why is he still Co-PP?

Purcell’s strategy is to hang on and to wait until the storm blows over. However, he needs to recognise that forever and day whenever his name is mentioned in public, all people will think about is his bareback rawhide sexual proclivities, his sauna jaunts, his sexual antics within and without the monastic cloister. He will never be known for anything else. Perhaps he needs to move on too ? I’m sure he could find a job fluffing and folding towels in the Boiler House Sauna once it reopens ?!

This priest has “engaged in a therapeutic course of assessment and counselling, which continues..” according to his bishop. I wonder where that is ? Do any correspondents know in which particular centre Fr Carey is receiving his treatment ? In times past he would have been whisked away to the USA or Canada, but I expect during this lockdown period he has had to settle for closer shores.
Will it help him ? Well, he will re-emerge at some stage, having gone through the treatment, and he will have taken to his ‘vocation’ with renewed vigour and commitment. Seemingly. From my observations of priests in his situation, this does not last long, and he will be back to his old tricks, with slightly more caution in order to avoid getting caught again. The underlying psychology will have remained unchanged, no matter how much therapy he gets. Carey has a problem that lies at the level of his psycho-sexual being, probably a frustrated sexuality, and finding himself locked in to the clerical existence finds all sorts of questionable ways of expressing his frustration, anger, and self-loathing.
The only route for Carey to become more settled, calm, peaceful and happy is for him to realise his sexuality and his immutable psycho-sexual make up and find ways of legitimately expressing that. The priesthood is not the vehicle for him to do that because it will continue to require him to sublimate himself, damagingly so. He needs to move out and on, for his own sake and for all our sakes. If he does not, and just slips back in to the life of a priest, he is only storing up more unhappiness for everybody, not least himself.

Like

Well, at least if he did go to the Anglican Diocese of Chichester he probably could find a way of life and existence that is in synch with his psycho-sexual health and needs, and still be in ministry. Perhaps that would work. He could have a relationship, including a gay relationship, domesticity, normality etc., and that would make him much more happy and settled and less inclined to dysfunctional behaviour, and that could reflect on his ability to continue in some kind of ministry. I know lots of people make fun of the Anglican Church, especially the Anglican Church in places like the UK, Ireland, USA etc. almost as if anything goes, but I sense that they have a responsible take on things like sexuality, women, relationships etc., which seems to me to be more realistic and healthy than the Catholic Church’s take on those things which so often just appears to be condemnation, sin, denial, sublimation, coercion etc.

Mr Carey implies he is just needing counselling and all will be fine. sadly not given the nature of the case.
1. No Bishop Fintan knew it would not go away however he was curtailed and still is by

2. No Bishop Fintan only knew about the “Mr” when he read it in the media and on this blog
3. There is no 3 (in case Bella think we cannot count)
4. The school was saying innocent until proven guilty and also lack of communications from
the dioceses.
6. The Dioceses and ok Magna paid for by the Lay Faithful.
7. Yes until Canonical procedure outcome but reduced.
8. Dublin Inter diocesan Tribunal however the case could go on for years as Mr Carey has a
right of appeal to Congregation of Clergy
The listing in the dioceses has to stay until the Canonical procedure has gone through so
technically he is still a C0-PP but on sabbatical.
The speed of the Canonical procedure will be what evidence and reports the Bishop sends.
Remember Ireland’s reorganisation of dioceses so Bishop Fintan will not want left out in the cold.

In what other setting would you get ‘treatment’ for committing a crime paid for by the organizations customers? None.
Firstly, while anyone can have counselling, if you are mentally well enough to plead in court there is no psychiatric condition to be treated. If you are too mentally unwell to plead it doesn’t usually get as far as court.
Secondly out here in the real world his employers would do a disciplinary to see if his conviction affected his ability to do his job or had brought the organization into disrepute and he would often be sent off down the drive.

I remember a case where one of the caretakers in a school was imprisoned for looking at child images, afterwards the comments were made “ There was always something strange about him”, there wasn’t he worked hard and was very upbeat but obviously he seriously crossed a line when he was at home in front of a computer. A priest was convicted of historic sexual abuse of pupils and then he was excused with “Well that’s what happens because of celibacy” he was always very odd in his behaviour but it was never commented upon

The school caretaker, if convicted of the same offence, would lose his job. Definitely. In the world in which I work, a criminal conviction is taken very seriously, and this kind of conviction would definitely be incompatible with remaining in post. You wouldn’t have a leg to stand on. I don’t mind Carey’s bishop and diocese standing by him and supporting him pro tem, but it must be so that he can move on and stand on his own two feet. Never ending support, MIA support, eternal c/o Bishop’s House support is not acceptable. Even at 60 he can take responsibility for himself and carve out a new life for himself, because his old priestly life, particularly in some public ministry, has to come to an end. Harsh, I know. But it is what has to happen.

Mr Carey should do the decent thing and resign from the Priesthood instead of hanging on.
This case will cost the Dioceses a fortune so do not think the cases that go to the Tribunal do not cost Dioceses money they do and very expensive if they have to go to Rome.
No Parish or School would take Mr Carey
He should resign now.
However the Council of priests in the Dioceses will likely back him and drag it out but the Bishop will win this cut and dry case.

The whole idea of therapy for Roman Catholic priests is to convince the public of a lie: that these men aren’t perverts, but just poor unfortunates who happen to be ill, or stressed out. It’s a way of garnering sympathy for a man who deserves nothing but censure and condemnation for his perverted behaviour, which is usually criminal as well. It’s a con, a great, big, fat lie.

Treat is from the latin tractare meaning ‘to manage’ to handle, ‘to drag about’ or ‘to deal with’.
Therapy, is of course, from the Greek, therapeia meaning ‘to serve,’ ‘to wait on’ or ‘to attend’.

The medical profession first used ‘treat’ and’ treatment’ as medical terms in the
17th century particularly in the context of dealing with those in asylums from which
modern day psychiatric hospitals evolved.

Here’s the thing. Some roles in life make you a public figure. Judge, for example. This means that what would otherwise be your private life is of more interest to the public.
In the case of a clergyman or judge you have a public role of reinforcing and upholding certain values.
Still, though, nobody would be interested in either of these having a wank in their own bedroom.
In the case of Carey he himself has made his own private life public, so there’s a certain irony in people saying he should be left alone. I personally have never masturbated in public but the comments yesterday about getting off on the risk of being caught ring true.

We are all equal before the law. Mr is the correct term. Nenagh is his address; it is normal in the republic for the address of convicts to be published in court reports.
3. Why do Carey’s picture and details remain until today on the website of Colaiste Muire in Ennis – six months after his arrest for a sexual crime? If Carey stepped aside from ministry six months ago why are both websites treating him as a current PP and chaplain?
Perhaps because he was suspended and retained a constitutional right to presumption of innocence until the Court determined otherwise. The people running those website would have prejudiced fair trial if they treated him as guilty before conviction.
4. Who is paying for Carey’s ON GOING therapy and counselling – a question raised by a blog reader by email yesterday?
Presumably the Church considering the church is liable for all legitimate expenses of priests. He may have made a donation. All of the above money originate with the laity. Although once in prison the State will presumably pay.
5. Is Father Carey still on a full Killaloe clerical salary?
More importantly will they donate his salary to pay for his imprisonment?
6. When and where will Father Carey’s secret canonical trial take place. Who cares. A second trial is double jeopardy. What it really is, is a disciplinary hearing between a contractor and contractee to see if the self-employed priest should remain operating under the Catholic banner.
Pat, your questions are those of a witch hunter. This man has a lot of egg on his face. A judge determined the appropriate sentence. The bible may say ‘let him without sin cast the first stone’, but that does not give licence to anybody to cast the last stone – as you appear to do here. Step back. You have highlighted the issue. It is being addressed.

Pat, of course, is never happy until a sinner – a priest particularly – is stripped bare and smashed more humiliatingly into the ground. While some, in their moral self righteousness, feel delighted at this mans downfall, I wonder why it is they rejoice so gleefully, almost to the point where they’d roll this man in muck and push him over a cliff? Carey didn’t stumble: he threw himself headlong into very serious and appalling criminal trouble. He’s a dirty old man and priest-pervert who not only brought humiliation on himself, but by jerking off, ON A PUBLIC BEACH OF ALL PLACES AND IN FULL VIEW OF SAID PUBLIC, the halfwit positively invited humiliation into his lie of a life.

My concern is not that waste of space Carey, but any additional children the RCC may sneakily allow to come under the influence of such a wretched and repulsive figure.

Another presumption of yours is that this matter is canonically ‘being addressed’.

Sure it is.

Taking Carey’s details off that website would have betokened nothing beyond what his suspension did. You imagine too much. It looks much more likely that the details were left in situ to facilitate a hoped-for cover-up of Carey’s crime, especially on account of its sordid sexual nature.

I quite take your point, but getting rid of priesthood would have the disadvantage that these duplicitous spongers would be let loose in the world. Since the faithful are so keen on financing these ‘holy’ men, I would suggest that the present arrangement continues but that they all be tagged to monitor where they actually are. It would also take the frisson of potential exposure out of their activities.
Any allegedly good and holy, or at least not indulging in illegal activity and actually saying their prayers, should of course have no objection to this plan.

Jesus clearly DID intend the priesthood. He said to pray that the Lord would send labourers into His harvest.

He choose the apostles and others and entrusted to them His work when He returned to the Father. He promised to be with His Church until the end of time.

If Magna Carta is right then Jesus did not keep His promise and everything went disastrously wrong very quickly after Pentecost. Jesus, of course, HAS kept His promise.

The Letter to the Hebrews incidentally is referring to the Old Testament priesthood which indeed has been completed and is now replaced by the priesthood of Christ.

Christ shares His priesthood with those He chooses and calls. And there is also, of course, as well as the ministerial priesthood, the priesthood of all the baptised.

This talk of ontological change. Every Christian is ontologically changed at Baptism when he/she is joined to Christ. Being ontologically changed, whether by baptism or ordination, does not guarantee the salvation of your soul and it certainly is not an excuse to behave in a superior way over anyone – the exact opposite! Ontological change is to make us more Christlike.

What Jesus did NOT intend was those corrupt and unworthy men who have inveigled their way into the priesthood. He did, however, warn us about them.

Most priests are not masturbating on beaches, having sex on Altars, etc. There are many priests doing exactly what the Lord calls them to do, to the best of their ability. I know many such good priests.

More pseudo-intellectual nonsense from someone whose judgement is perpetually clouded by anger and resentment and hence, unreliable.

The emergence of ministerial priesthood and orders is part of the organic development of Christianity, which is ongoing.

Jesus’ public ministry was short, barely more than a year if some scholars of the historical Jesus are to be believed. He couldn’t do everything in that short space of time.

But he did send the Holy Spirit to be with his church until the end of time, under whose inspiration and guidance the ministries of the churches have developed. According to the same principle, there is no reason why the Holy Spirit is not inspiring the church to ordain women – there are already married priests serving the church.

The poster has no conception of historical theology.

Conal, I sense your youth, along with your youthful naivety; you have a lot to learn.

Are you a Leaving Cert RE student or graduate? Or perhaps a junior seminarian?

‘Labourers’ does not translate as ‘Roman Catholic priests’, or even just as ‘priests’. It refers contextually to discipleship; nothing more. Anyone (male or female, young or old) can be a disciple of Christ. Any other understanding here is not an instance of biblical exegesis, but of biblical eisegesis: effectively, reading into Scripture one’s preferred understanding of it. This is something that the institutional Roman Catholic Church has been doing for a very long time, with the sole purpose of justifying its priestly elite and its priestly privilege, historically often known as ‘benefit of clergy’. It is this high-minded self-exceptionalism that lies behind the self-aggrandisement, self-promotion, and self-protection of Roman Catholic priests collectively, especially of those priests accused not only of child-sexual abuse, but even of murder.

Jesus chose The Twelve as symbolic of the twelve tribes of Israel, and therefore of the Jewish people as a whole, a deeply patriarchal society. This was his only reason for choosing them. He had to start somewhere, but he didn’t intend remaining there; nor did he, through his inclusion of women as evangelists, and by the abolition of priesthood.

According to Acts of the Apostles, the Holy Spirit inspired many more than The Twelve, (including, almost certainly, females) with one and the same mission: to do as Jesus had done on Earth. This, of course, included fulfilling his instruction at the Last Supper, to commemorate him through the sharing of bread and wine as the common food of discipleship for spiritual nourishment and for salvation. There were NO priests involved here at all.

I do know what priesthood Hebrews is referring to. But the particularity of it is unimportant. What is important is the teaching in Hebrews that no such man-made institution as Levitical priesthood could atone for humanity’s vitiated nature; this was done exclusively, and only, by Christ’s death and resurrection.

Priesthood, all priesthood, is henceforth redundant.

And your judgement is rendered extremely myopic not only by your historical ignorance, but principally by your limited intellectual ability to analyse what restricted historical data you possess.

The emergence of ministerial priesthood and orders is no more part of the organic development of ‘Christianity’ than is Hell, and then Limbo, for unbaptised adults and children: all are the products of fallible (And how!) clerical minds that, plainly speaking, got it wrong, for whatever reason.

I can see your mindset for divine ordination in this peculiarly superstitious understanding of ecclesial history: if it happened, it must be becsuse God himself ordained it. With respect, I’d expect more sophisticated reasoning from a 12-year-old.

Jesus did indeed, after his ascension, impart his spirit to guide his followers, but the Holy Spirit wasn’t going to force them to accept the divine will. History shows how often that will, and its wisdom, was rejected: I’ve already mentioned the doctrinal nonsense of Hell or Limbo for the souls of the sacramentally unbaptised, but there are many other such gaffs, for example, so-called ‘just war’, capital punishment, the slaughter of the Crusades, the sadism of the roving tribunals of the Papal Inquisition.

I have a delightful conception for historical BAD theology.

We try to carry out our ministry as well as we can. There are failures and failers: success and disappointment: light and darkness: good and bad. Good post.
I too sensed Conals youth.
I’m aware of a matter which can only be described as very EVIL,
covered up by priests as well as bishops. Most of the priests
involved are considered good priests within the catholic community.
So to say good priests are doing exactly what the Lord calls them to do, to the best
of their ability is, quite frankly, very naive. Maybe they were ordered by their bishop to
remain silent. I don’t know. What I do know is Jesus would never condone their silence:
silence for the sake of protecting the clerical fraternity.
I also suspect pastoral responses by bishops are lead by the legal profession,
PR companies and propaganda. Pius manipulative platitudes don’t wash anymore.
Bishops and priests are not to be considered ‘victims’. They brought it on themselves.

Bishops spend weeks on training and induction and constantly on courses.
However a lot of the admin, finance, HR is mostly done by lay people so the Bishop tries to do the job he is ordained to do the Sacramental life of the Church.
Bishops and Clergy should not be getting involved in admin, finance, building work, hall lets and so on it is shocking if they have time to do that.
By our baptism we are all disciples of the Church on the same journey so let us share the work load.

It’s official! Masturbation is an effective painkiller, according to some scientists.😊
The Romanists are, and always have been, WRONG about so-called ‘self-abuse’ (aka ‘jerking off’).
If wanking is an effective painkiller, then it is a NATURAL painkiller, and written into Natural Law. GOD’S LAW!😇
OMG! OMG!😲
Read all about it in Pink News!👍
I have.😎

They’re also wrong about anal sex and homosexuality, both of which are natural.
But you can read about those in nature lol

also wrong about apps like grindr or the very erotic but non-genital Instagram, and wrong about gay saunas too. If you demonize these you are demonizing the gay world. A bishop who recommended “planning an evening of masturbation” as a healthy alternative underestimates the value of human contact and human touch.

Indeed. But the DUP will make no excuses for this guy, no exceptions either.
Contrast this with the behaviour of the institutional Roman Catholic Church towards its paedophile/pervert priests.
Contrast it, too, with the comments in the past two days in defence of Fr. Jerry Carey, Galway’s very own (but I’m sure not alone) sex-pervert priest.

You advanced an argument why the bishop of Killaloe went public which could reflect poorly on him, is anyone was persuaded by your faulty logic.

Now, when it suits you, you advance a diametrically-opposite reason in relation to the DUP which would reflect well on them, again, if it were true, or if anyone were jejune enough to be fooled by your musings.

Joseph Tobin and, if he is appointed to replace Marc Ouellet, Blaise Cupich will have their work cut out for them to change the composition of the U.S.C.C.B. membership.

Also an unusual case because he told the police he did the string of robberies out of madness. Unusual to find one who admits he’s mad rather than calling everyone else mad. Another failure in formation.

I bought a packet of six jam filled doughnuts. I ate them all. Plus a box of French Fancies. Am I breaking Lent?

Lay off this Priest. He is obviously struggling and thought he’d have a wank in his car when nobody was around, big deal. He’s clearly lonely. I’ve done that, others on here have. Please look at your own lives first before criticising others. Priests are human beings and yes, we wank too! By the sounds of it he did not mean to expose himself to anyone and thought nobody was around. He does not deserve the shit being thrown at him on here. Show compassion and sensitivity.

We need to remember that Pat has also been convicted of a crime in a court room. It does not mean he intended it. I agree. This witch hunt style of hounding people needs to end. These are real people. We all have good and bad in us. We all make mistakes. We are all redeemable. The people delighting in this are infantile and sick. These are the same people who will have blood on their hands if they push this man over the edge. I am not happy with the way people on this blog conduct themselves. They tried to push many of the Maynooth seminarians over the edge too. It’s sick. We can highlight wrongdoing without lowering ourselves to this.

He will hang on and take it to Rome for an appeal maybe get paid for another year.
Irish Clergy are on a salary as the UK clergy what it is like not to have a salary an depend on donations or mass cards.

Jardine with your thoughts no wonder the Bishops of Scotland had have a hard time with the C/O or the MIA and hopefully the new Archbishop will make it a priority to get rid of the C/O and other Bishops.
Shame you were not in Edinburgh you would have loved KOB and his merry men.
There is only one place for Mr Carey laicised and if you are a priest Jardine then safeguarding Scotland would not let him in a parish or a school.
Mr Carey must have been very unlucky if this was his first time at this spot shame (Think not)
