ANGIE GOUGH PARISHIONER, DEFENDS FATHER JERRY CAREY OVER BEACH MASTURBATION INCIDENT.

What a stream of “Christian” vitriol this is. And anonymous too, how lovely.

My name is Angie Gough and I’m a former parishioner of Fr Jerry Carey’s.

Fr Jerry is a good man, who has spent his life making life better for people in his community, in small ways and big.

As chaplain of the school I attended, and in the parish in general, he consistently supported young people to find their way in the world, extending friendship and kindness to everyone.

He reflected to us the very best of what the church should be:  human, kind, down to earth. Flawed.

As far as I am aware, there has never been any suggestion of impropriety around Fr Jerry and anyone looking would be hard pressed to find it.

This incident, though unfortunate and embarrassing, was a lapse of judgement in the wrong place.

No doubt he is heartbroken to have caused hurt by his actions. He misjudged, he made a mistake, who among us hasn’t?

Kindness is what Fr Jerry always taught and demonstrated.

A little dose of it in this stream would not go amiss.

Angie

PAT SAYS:

Dear Angie,

That you for your communication – which is published here without any editing.

Your opinion of Jerry is very positive and I’m sure is a consolation to him at this difficult time in his life.

At difficult times, no mayter who we are, we need friends to stand by us.

What Jerry did was foolish in the extreme and also a crime.

It suggests that there is something “wrong” with Gerry:

1. He has unresolved psychosexual issues?

2. He has a big problem with celibacy?

3. He is angry and just doesnt give a damn?

This incident happened when Jerry was 60.

It is hard to imagine that from ordination at 24 until now – 37 years later that this is Jerry’s first sexual outing.

To believe that would be to believe that he was absolutely sexually continent during his 20s, 30s and 40s – when most men’s sexual urges are at full sail.

In researching this story I have talked to people, including priests, who say that Jerry could be very arrogant? Arrogance and pride regular bedfellows and coukd it be the case that pride cane before the fall?

I’m also told that there are and have been other “concerns” noted on Jerry’s file at the bishop of Killaloe’s office?

Monahan

In any event, Fintan Monahan, who tried to keep it all quiet, has now announced that after Jerry’s criminal conviction there is now to be a church canonical tribunal. Those tribunals generally take a dim view when there is a criminal conviction in place.

Jerry obviously needs the support and love of you and his other friends. But you will not do him any favours by treating him as a victim or encouraging him to see himself as one.

He is a fully grown man of 60 who decided to do a sexual action on a public beach patronised by children, women and families.

If his decision in this regard was blurred by some kind of psychological dysfunction or impairment, then he needs compassionate and professional help.

I cannot see how he can return to a parish or to be a chaplain to children and younger people.

Is this our correspondent Angie Gough?

OTHER KILLALOE MATTERS

We heard on the grapevine that the Killaloe priest, Michael Collins, the long time dean at Maynooth is leaving Maynooth and returning to the diocese?

Some say he will go on Sabbatical. Others that he will replace Jerry Carey as PP.

Scariff

Others say he will become of the PP of Scariff where he is very well known for various reasons.

THE TWO ABUSED SEMINARIANS

The story if the two abused Killaloe Maynooth seminarians are still doing rounds.

There are stories of rape, sexual abuse, people needing professional help and pay offs.

These stories need more investigation.

I assume, from the inverted commas, that the name Angie Gough is a pseudonym. In which case, why is she criticising commentors for not publishing under their own names?

Like

No Angie Gough is a real person. She is one of Jerry’s former parishioners. A wealthy yuppie in her 40s with a penchant for theatre and musical performance. The kind of individual who can be blinded by a man like Jerry as he loved to play to her type of crowd as it made him feel part of the hip and trendy set.

I assume that all those clerics in Maynooth with Phd’s had to take out a loan to pay for their studies and upkeep, just like the rest of the population. Did they have to work in a bar or restaurant at the weekend to pay for it all? Or, do the bah bah pay for it?

Like

The bah bah pay for it. You won’t catch the clergy wiping bums in a care home or cleaning up spilt lube in a sauna.

Like

I paid for my postgraduate studies myself. I had to take out a loan, but I wouldn’t impose on the people. It’s not fair.

Fr Carey’s advocate, protector and parishioner is consistent with a common phenomenon when a Catholic priest is accused or in this case accused, tried and found guilty of masturbating in public which is a criminal offence – if the discretion to suspend a sentence wasn’t available Fr Carey would be in jail.
The parishioner struggles to call out the crime and she only sees it through his eyes – unfortunate, embarrassing, lapse of judgment- this reluctance or is it a refusal to recognise that Father Carey committed a crime and serve a sentence and have a criminal record is lost in the confiused mist of clerical adoration and sycophancy.

7.24: You are wrong. There is no sycophancy going on. Angie merely expresses her opinion and surely her approach of mercy is commendable. This priest will carry his ignominy for the rest of his life. Any fall from grace is a grave humiliation. There is a horrible mercilessness at play in your narrative. No one is condoning his crime but as Christians we are suppose to practise mercy. That’s not a crime, surely!! Jesys, Mary and Joseph, if I dealt with some of the peniitents with such harshness, I might be responsible for something awful…God help us …

Father where could a Bishop put Carey he has committed a Sexual criminal Offence.
So what parish or School could he go to.
Father one thing horribly comes to my mind about you and that is do you take safeguarding seriously.
Looks like you do not or is Carey just one of the club.
let Rome decide if he is fit to be a member of the priesthood as Carey will likely take it to appeal saying poor poor me.

No sycophancy going on from Angie? An approach of mercy from her?
No, there is no sycophancy, but there is naivety. Would you allow a known paedophile to be around children? Or a public wanker?
Have you heard of prudence? It’s one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, but he seems to have overlooked dear, naive and imprudent Angie.

Thank God we have people like Angie. She sets the Christian response, able to see the greater good of this priest’s life, while recognising the wrongful crime. It is beyond comprehension why Pat is pursuing this man. He is already humiliated by his criminal act. Surely, it is very unkind, even sinfullly wrong and very un-Christian to be chasing this man to a cliff edge. I think it is very dangerous to analyse this man without a professional training in psychiatry or psychology. While I condemn the sin of this priest, I see no point in continuing to slay this man. Each of us could privately co den ourselves for much sinfulness. The harrassment is like a circus, an ugly circus.

I personally do not believe anybody on this blog is “chasing” anybody to a “cliff edge” as 7:41 am has stated. However, it is important to be mindful of the re-occurring issues we hear in global news – with these upsetting facts it’s important to keep our eye on the ball in order to prevent such nocuous happenings from being “brushed” under the carpet; the results of such immoral and bizarre behaviours can have absolutely devestating effects on innocent people’s lives – this is what must take priority here, remember!
Would this man who has gotten himself into trouble on the beach interfer with kids? I genuinely believe NO, but for somebody who works with kids, in a school, and in a position of moral trust to do that, alone, in a car and in broad daylight is enough to set off a very loud alarm bells. Alarm bells are not to be ignored…
If he was parked in his car with another adult, “smooching”, in the dark of night when the beach was deserted then it would very much seem all the more normal behaviour, and actually a little more romantic… But sadly this was not the case!
I admire the headmistress for her integrity and pro-active response – she’s got our backing all the way x
And one reason we must continue to discuss these safeguarding issues is to prevent them from being “brushed” under the carpet, as the news usually reports.
Keep up the good work Bishop Pat x

It’s people like you who refuse to see the crime for what it is and the reason priests got away with sexual crimes over the years. Any good that Carey has done was wiped away the day he was caught masturbating in a public, family beach, on an August Bank Holiday!! Excuse me for caring about the vulnerable people of Ireland and stop making him a victim, he deserves no such title.
It is unfortunate that his life is ruined but safeguarding procedures have to be put in place. He has proved himself a danger to the public, convicted in a court of law and by the mercy of the judge had his sentence suspended.
I do hope and pray he gets the help he needs. I’m happy Bishop Pat has highlighted this issue, it set the cogs turning in the diocese of Killaloe.

Just kidding.

I don’t waste my energy on punishing such trifles: I prefer to reserve it for the elite of sins, those committed by Catholic priests. And I have many such priests here to keep me company and entertained. What’s more, I have invited many others to join them. And they will.

I don’t know why I should tell you whether or not I masturbate.

The RCC says it is a serious sin. I don’t believe it is. But maybe it shouldn’t be done in public.

As Woody Alan answered when asked if masturbation was a sin:

“Only if it’s not done properly”

Like

Then based on that silly response – I think you are wrong in your article today :
You do of course masturbate . So do this priest in question and every other male . Therefore I think your point was disingenuous as you can’t live up to the sexual moral high ground you wrote about today . So less of going at someone who pulls his Rodger same as yourself . Don’t hide behind RCC. This is a human sexuality issue . Regardless of vows of celibacy and dedication to the church .

I am not a priest. But I do hold a responsible position of leadership in the world in which I work. I am liked and respected, I believe, and I am good at my job. Let me tell you, however, if I was arrested for masturbating in a public place and causing public outrage, and found guilty by a court, and sentenced, I would lose my job. Simple ! I would be clearly told that I had brought not just myself but also my institution / company in to disrepute, I had shown lack of judgement, I had undermined respect and trust in me and my position etc. etc. – the list would go on and on. No matter how much my bosses might like me and think me a good egg, the overriding decision would be to let me go. I do not see any reason why this should not be the case with Carey. In fact, even more so, I would suggest that the very stuff of Carey’s ministry and work is working with people, including young people, and that requires a person who is respected and trusted and is a role model. Carey can no longer be any of those things. So, please, let us get away from the subjective issues of how much people like him or what a good man he is. Objectively, he has done something, and been found guilty of something that completely undermines his ability to do what he was doing up to that point. Forgiveness, rehabilitation etc. can come later, but will have to come when he is living and working in another environment and life. That is the way it must be. He himself, his bishop, his parishioners all need to come to that view and stop this silly business of trying to rewrite history and his past, and trying to find ways around what is as clear as day. Or will this be another case of clerical exceptionalism where different rules and norms apply to Carey simply because he is a priest !?

Like

Well said, Sadly for the Bishop he will be getting letters and emails about poor Carey from people like Angie.
However what the Bishop needs is letters of concern and complaint about Carey or maybe someday Carey will become your Parish Priest.
Two charges in the canon law would be bringing the Church into disrepute and also the sexual criminal charges.

I don’t think it’s talked about nowadays but I’m sure the teaching of the church was always that you actually had to be contrite for your sins to be absolved and there was perfect and imperfect contrition and all that stuff.
The point of saying this is the Christian approach to forgiveness means actually being sorry and actually doing penance. I find this trend for talking about mercy as if whatever we do wrong has no implications, absolutely bizarre. In fact it’s almost like a caricature of the Protestant idea where you’re saved and that’s it, but twisted to imply you should just be forgiven whatever.
The other thing is, about the question about masturbation – the traditional teaching is that sex should only be between a man and a woman in marriage. This is totally not an easy teaching but the fact this has gone out of the window in practice doesn’t mean that celibacy and chastity have stopped being what they always were!

Like

9.21: You make a very legitimate argument and do so without clubbing or smashing this priest to pieces. You are right: he has crossed boundaries of behaviour and been judged by civil courts. His act was criminal. He should therefore seriously consider his position and I’m sure he is in the process of doing so. I do not belueve that continuing to shame this man is if any benefit except to use his crime as a sledge hammer against the Church. I don’t accept that there is no room for mercy in this situatiin. Only a hard stony heart would preclude any opportunity for his rehabilitation, not as a (renewed) priest but in another capacity. It is wrong to imply that those who show mercy are acquiescent in criminal behaviour. I hope none of us ever has the misfortune of any criminal wrongdoing levelled against us.

In the clerical compassion means: turning a blind eye, pretending it didn’t happen, never mentioning or discussing it and cover up – whereas true compassion distinguishes between a crime and a sin – we are all sinners but we are not all criminals – that doesn’t mean criminals/prisoners don’t invite compassion but mercy without justice is sentimentality and nostalgia – by the way, money that the ‘parishioner’ who wrote to Bishop Pat is a priest!!

Like

Bishop Pat over 30 years ago you personally were treated horrendously by Cahal Daly and at that time is was easier for Bishops to get rid of “Bad” clergy and also there was an abundance of clergy. so move on 2021 it is very difficult to remove clergy due to canon laws and also a vast shortage.
This is not a one off for Carey so he should do the honourable thing and resign from ministry and two reasons for that he thinks he is above everyone and also a very weak Bishop.
So like all other many cases will go to the tribunal to be decided however in this case it is cut and dry he has been found GUILTY in a criminal court and now him and his Bishop planned a massive cover up which has failed.
Bishops have a hard time from clergy however they need to be tougher but to be tougher they need evidence and the more the better so just now Bishop Fintan likely has the letter printed but most possible that is all as they all say i will contact the Bishop and sadly never do.
Then Bishop Fintan has the Connelly case not to mention the alleged two seminarians but it all comes down to proof and that is why Bishops need evidence.
i am sure Bishop Fintan will be having sleepless night as saying to a priest of over 30 years is up goodbye will be difficult but comes with the job and then the other issues in Killaloe.
If we side step and look at other issues on this blog like Stephen Wilson and others Bishops need to ordain theses guys if their formators say they are ready and the only way a Bishop can refuse if he has proof or wrong doings and they it does not happen.
I totally agree Archbishop Martin and Bishop Fintan need to use canon law to get rid or stop the wrong people however it comes back to proof.
Be assured Archbishop Okolo is not sitting doing nothing he is very intelligent and would inform Rome of everything to protect himself.
So anyone with any concerns contact a Bishop or better still to the Papal Nuncio to deal with it.

I didn’t “offer any argument.” I merely asked questions.
Your reply however avoids answering the very specific question I asked, by your use of what some refer to as ” avoidance phraseology. ” ie “in a special way called transubstantiation.”
However, both you and the RCC at large seem to claim that a priest, even a laicised priest in a state of mortal sin, can still perform the magic conjuring trick of changing bread & wine into a 2000 year dead Jew who also happens to be the Almighty Creator God of all the universe. Give it whatever fancy phrase you like!
Well indeed as you say, that may be church teaching forever. I do not, in your words, “rail against it” by asking questions concerning its veracity.

Sorry MMM. I was preoccupied with two parishioners with Covid issues and their families.

The RCC believes in ontological change at ordination that can NEVER be removed or lost. So, yes, a laicised priest, even a convicted or disgraced one, can change the human elements into God.

Laicisation removes the clerical status or office but not the ontological change.

For instance, the RC church requires laicised priests to confer the sacraments to a person in danger of death.

According to Crux, the Irish bishops have described a bill in the Irish Parliament to legalise assisted suicide as ‘fundamentally flawed’ and as one that ‘cannot be repaired or improved’. This is episcopal-speak for ‘we reject the bill on the principle that human life is sacred’.

Was it sacred to Roman Catholic bishops and priests when they were raping or sodomising children, or protecting those who did, thereby enabling them to commit additional offences?

Was it sacred to the Roman Catholic bishops when they collectively taught in a way that clearly did not regard human life as sacred? Such as their traditional moral approval of so-called ‘just war’ and capital punishment?

I hope that these parasitical hypocrites are ignored by the Irish people, and I believe that they will be.

But keep speaking out, bishops, because every time you social leaches oppose anything on the principle of life’s sanctity, you just remind us all of how little historical regard you had for your own pretentious bullshit.

Hey, Seamus! It’s a criminal offence we are talking about here, not just sin.

Let him who is without a criminal offence cast the first stone. Under this circumstance, Shammy, there could be plenty of stones clodded at that pervert Carey

6.23: You knew Pat that by printing her letter to you the floodgates if venom would be open for a tsunami of ceazy comments where she is totally misunderstood. Her virtues stand in stark contrast to all the bloodied Pharisees on your blog today! When they have an ignominious falling, it’s people like Angie they’ll want around them, not the stone throwers. Karma has a happy knack of frightening the ugly hard hearted!! May that moment come soon to those vicious creeps..

Yes. Offenders like people like Angie because they let them off. Have you ever been in a prison? They’re there because the won’t act responsibly and won’t take responsibility.
It is not a responsible act to have a wank in a public place because you are stressed!

Angie’s ‘virtues’ stand in stark contrast to the character of critics on today’s blog?😅 Forgive my guffawing at your remark, ‘Father’, but since when have expressing clerical favouritism and naivety been virtues?
To my knowledge, Angie did not speak out publicly in defence of ANY other sex offender; it was just for Carey.
Should I ever have such an ignominious fall as Carey’s, I shouldn’t look for dearest Angie to rally to my side in loyal defence: she wouldn’t be interested, since I’m not a priest. And it appears to be only offending priests who motivate Angie to lift her arse in crusading mode.

Seamus are you trying to hide the sex offence or Lugs’s mismanagement of it, which to my mind is the real headline.

I have to say the posts about this priest have made me less doubtful of that ontological change thing than I was. I mean, who is to say that a man can’t enter a cathedral and come out another Christ when he can enter a court and come out a sex offender.

5.37: Do you just like being ignorant and silly and infantile? Angie merely expressed her Christian understanding of mercy as given by CHRIST. This surely is a very commendable virtue! You, on the other hand want this man to be thrown under a cargo ship. Don’t you? I’m sure Angie would not of course support a paedophile. She seems quite measured in her comments. Your suggestion tthat she may be a cheerleader for sex offenders is absurd and offensive. What is it about you, loopy haters? Find your brain, you twat!

Like

No the Christian approach is actually that God finally judges but the civil authorities have a right to punish, the church has a duty to keep children safe and the criminal should be responsible for his behaviour. Fool.
She is being a cheerleader for sex offenders. You are just refusing to admit that because you are either a priest, a sex offender or a cheerleader for sex offenders.
This matter was not dealt with correctly and even then Father dear Father should have voluntarily stepped aside from ministry after being charged.
Simple as.
And you wonder why your church has a reputation for being full of kiddy fiddler’s!

You haven’t a clue, have you? About my earlier post?

Angie (God love her) is driven not by mercy towards the priest-pervert Carey, but by clericalism. Which is why I asked how many other sex offenders, like Carey, she had cheerled for. The answer (from a noticeable absence of responses) appears to be ‘none whatever’.

If mercy had truly been dear Angie’s motive, then wouldn’t she, surely, have cheerled for all,sex offenders, not just Carey?

I’m sure even you can answer this one sensibly.

I think 6:20 can’t see because of being weighed down by the millstone JESUS has reserved for him.

6.43: Your comments are utter rubbish. I think you may be on the booze as your brain is malfunctioning. The priest is not a sex offender. His crime was defined by a civil court. Angie is a true Christian. She ain’t no cheerleader. You, sir, are a cheerleader though – for silliness, stupidity and hatred.

Carey was convicted on a charge of offending public decency by commiting a sexual act in full view of the public.
Carey offended sexually. Ergo, he is a sex offender, you utter berk!

Angie is making Carey the victim in her arguments. He’s a 60 year old dirty man. What he did is repulsive, in a very public place, a busy beach with families and got caught. God love the poor woman who saw such a sight. Disgusting

Also its really nice to hear so much respect for you on the blog today. Someone earlier called you Excellency, which was clearly a person from mainland Europe and someone else calling you Bishop.

Father Jerry Carey was charged with a CRIMINAL Offence and found GUILTY at Galway Court (Criminal) and not Civil.
And the offence was Sexual and here is the quote.
“pleaded guilty to intentionally engaging in offensive conduct of a sexual nature”.
