THE GOINGS ON WONERSH.

Dear Bishop Pat,

First, thank you for your interesting blog. Even if I don’t all the time agree with you in your opinions and theology, your blog is well needed to make the world know about the corruption, abuse and bullying going on the Catholic church. Keep up the good work!

You have earlier mentioned about St. John’s Seminary, Wonersh on your blog. The seminary is due to close in June or July, BUT they are still asking and begging for financial support, both on their website and by snail mail!

The menu on the website  has its own tag “Support” when clicking on that there is a heartbreaking story about their chapel
and how much in need of money they are to refurbish that. The same text is written in the snail mail I’ve got a couple of times AFTER they announced they are closing, last time only a couple of weeks ago:

Mons Ewing

Around Easter 2019, we launched our Chapel Challenge Appeal, having been overwhelmed by the generosity of so many towards our Seminarians’ Room Refurbishment Appeal the year before. We didn’t want to ‘push our luck’ so-to-speak in asking for more help from already generous donors – so we tried to make it clear that our Chapel Challenge Appeal was not being made to those who had been generous to us already, but rather to those who may have missed our Seminarians’ Room Refurbishment Appeal, and also to the ‘Old Boys’ of Wonersh – whether ordained or not.

While the Chapel is still very much fit for purpose and in daily use, work needs to be done to stabilise the original parquet flooring, to upgrade the heating and lighting, and to improve the sound system – and the Chapel desperately needs redecorating. This involves much more than just a lick of paint. There are many fine features, which have been delicately painted, and which need to remain in such a way, as the Chapel is a Grade II listed building.

Any Chapel Challenge Appeal donations, large or small, will be very gratefully received (cheques payable to: St John’s Seminary). Please send to:

Mgr Gerald Ewing
St John’s Seminary,
Wonersh , Guildford,
Surrey GU5 0QX

(It is also possible to donate by Bank Transfer, and to Gift Aid. You may even like to remember the Seminary in your will. For further details email: rector@wonersh.org )

Support the seminary!

On top on that they actively seek out new donors and contributors, especially “Old Boys of Wonersh – whether ordained or not”. As they state in their appeal:

“… our Chapel Challenge Appeal was not being made to those who had been generous to us already, but rather to those who may have missed our Seminarians’ Room Refurbishment Appeal, and also to the ‘Old Boys’ of Wonersh – whether ordained or not.”

Their earlier “Seminarians’ Room Refurbishment Appeal” which according
to the seminary was a success didn’t benefit the seminarian rooms at all but rather the staffs rooms which were upgraded to fancy apartments and suites. Plus spent on other things benefiting the staff.

And now they are begging for more money.

Knowing how the place works and how they misuse money and treat people I’m disgust and offended by these appeals which in my eyes are scams.

And as a former Wonerhs seminarian I’m deeply offended that they are targeting former students / seminarians, not only on their website but also by appeals by snail mail.

God bless,

PAT SAYS

Its strange if Wonersh is still collecting money if is going to close this June?

The talk was that the bishop/ bishops were goibg to sell the building and land for God knows how many millions?

Here we have another situation which needs transparency.

INTERVIEW OF BILLY MURRAY, LARNE UNDERTAKER.

Billy Murray was a much loved character in Larne.

He and Norman were generous in the extreme to me when my mum Jo died in 2006.

For a joke Billy used to measure me with his eyes and tell me the size of coffin I would be going into.

I told him he might be away before me and he was.

*****UPDATE ON WONERSH

Worersh seminary has this morning taken down their website?

145 replies on “THE GOINGS ON WONERSH.”

Yes absolutely ridiculous and about right for that shower.
Since it is now March even if the chapel does need doing out it won’t be finished before the place is closed!

Like

Having spent six years in Wonersh, when I got the letter asking for money for the chapel to be done up, my first thought was you can paint a turd gold… All of us knew back in the 90s that you just didn’t turn the lights on very high. And then you didn’t see the paint peeling off, and the mould on the walls. The worst thing about that chapel was sitting listening to a homily at 7am while holding in a fart from the previous night’s dodgy supper.

Like

They’re only in it for the money. Forget God, Jesus, The Eucharist and most of all pastoral skills. It is all about the money. No matter if it is Wonersh, Oscott, Gaynooth, a parish, church, diocese or even the Vatican itself.
Interestingly they have a link to a Just Giving account on their website:

I think this blog has put on hold any promotion of Monsignor Ewing as an Auxiliary bishop of Southwark.
Archbishop John Wilson is not happy at all.

Like

Wonersh is apparently turning out to be motley, the result of a Rector extending his authority. It must be extremely difficult for the staff, who have to agree to new assignments. A needs assessment of each parish in the dioceses from which they came would be the only fair and correct process to match their skills to the requirements of vacant parishes or other posts and, in some cases, those created by moving on an inadequate incumbents. The needs assessments should have begun by now with briefing papers to each diocesan bishop, aware of the skills and talents of each Wonersh staff member. My worry is that we can only wait and see what will transpire in what has turned out as a volatile organisational and pastoral context. Only high level managerial skills can solve this dilemma facing the Church in England and Wales.

Like

They need to get their story straight at Wankerish – and I choose the word “straight’ in its broadest sense ! But, on the matter of the future of the Wonersh site, I wonder do they really have any plans at present ? It does seem counter intuitive to be spending pretty large sums on the fabric until they know what they are going to do with it. So, I think BullyBoy Wilson needs to get the finger out and start working out what will happen and let us know. Or maybe he has his eye on greater things – across the river ? – as Nichols episcopal life expectancy is severely limited ?

Like

Archbishop Wilson has NO intention of crossing the Thames as he has a big enough job to do in Southwark.

6 Ordinations this years and the other 11 Seminarians will be transferred to Allen Hall also there were no applications last year from Southwark or the other 5 Dioceses that use it.

The plans would be to sell the property however than will depend on teh Legals.

Like

Look at the clergy list for Southwark and increasingly the clergy are from abroad, especially Indian sub-continent and West Africa, particularly Nigeria. It won’t be long until there is a BAME Archbishop of Southwark, although the minority bit will not include anybody LGBTQ+ Well, not openly anyhow…!!

The Church is not a property agent and therefore it will be sold.

This proposed Synod for Ireland ? Hmmm? Seems to be on the long finger, really. I think that the We Are Church Ireland expresses quite succinctly what it should really be about: 1. Sort out the clergy 2. Stop bashing anyone of difference and diversity and get used to them being here and proud, and get over the fact that 50% of the population of the Church is women 3. Open up ministries, particularly the priesthood, to a whole range of people, including women. But, will they do that ? Of course not ! They will waffle about all sorts of peripheral and irrelevant issues and hope that will be enough not to have to change anything, at least on their watch. So, don’t expect too much from this proposed Synod for Ireland.

Like

Today’s blog has nothing whatsoever to do with a Synod in Ireland. Where on earth did you get the idea that it is remotely related to Wonersh Seminary? Any reasonable person reading the main blog post and comments will immediately understand its subject. You have done yourself no good by misunderstanding and wasting the time of dedicated readers. Might I suggest you take more care when writing contributions to the blog or you stop any further communication.

Actually Wonersh and a national synod in a neighboring country are easily connected. A culture of synodality at parish, diocesan and national levels will transform the way the church operates. You need a more imaginative perspective.

As always when +Pat mention Wonersh, their web site is taken down. Last night right after +Pat publisged his blog, it was still up and running with the donation buttom, but this morning it was taken down. Now you’re greeted with “Site suspended for routine maintenance”. Maybe they by mistake forgot to remove the support and donation page at the last update. Or maybe not.

Like

When you go on the mobile version of the website it is all exactly as you say until you scroll right down to the bottom where there is a note to the effect that since we redid the website the place is going to close. They haven’t taken down the appeal and this gives the impression the decision was made suddenly and unexpectedly.

Talking of websites down, as in Wankerish, I see that Little Fr Peter’s new church’s Wandsworth website is off line and down too. Someone suggested the other day that there was some kind of scandal there involving his predecessor ? True ? Is Fr Peter the go to man to be parachuted in to fix things ? SuperPeter ? AND NO, I AM NOT A STALKER. Just interested…..

Like

Archbishop John Wilson instructed the web site to be taken down.
Father Peter Littleton is the Priest in Residence and will return to his former parish soon.
As for the current situation matters of great concern are being investigated by the Area Bishop Paul Hendricks.
Archbishop Wilson will be making many changes after Easter.
“Super Peter” is just happy to be a priest.

Like

Oh, do tell what the “matters of great concern” are ! Don’t be a tease. And, pray tell, who does Archbishop Wilson think he is to instruct the parish to take down the parish website ? What control does he / should he have over that. It belongs to the parish, not to him. What do the parishioners think about this arbitrary, overbearing instruction? Bishops need to understand the limitation of their powers and authority. They are not omnipotent. SuperPeter will be keen to make a good impression, so he will do what he is told. He doesn’t look like the man to tell the Archbishop to wind his neck in. I guess you are right that Little Peter is happy to be a priest. It took him long enough, and he had to go to various establishments and through all sorts of reviews before he was finally accepted. A marginal candidate is what they call that in my trade.

Same in Ireland, land of saints and scholars, with St. Patrick’s Day coming up.

Like

Victims are constantly met and in some cases compensation payments are made however it is confidential.
You may not know this but financial payments are of no concern to people they just want professional counselling.
There is no need to add injury to those abused as though they were in it for the money be assured that is not the case most of the time what they want is Justice and they will get it where the Church can.

When a bishop ordains a man who he knows to active is that ordination blessed by God?
The above must happen often, they just choose to turn a blind eye – hear no evil, see no evil etc
The hypocrisy surrounding homosexuality is screaming and searing – the majority of clergy are homosexual ()many active) – indeed the Vatican owns the building which houses Italy’s biggest gay sauna – and yet against a backdrop of global child abuse and sexual mistreatment of nuns – they find time to pronounce on who they will bless and who they won’t!!

Pope Francis is a Machiavellian Peronist giving with one hand taking with the other – he runs with the hare and the hounds, supporting civil unions yet refusing a blessing etc – and yet homosexuals, whether active or not, are ordained to the priesthood and are ‘of the parish’ (Martel) and the rite of ordination which includes many blessings – it’s clearly one rule for an elite priesthood another for ordinary lay Catholics – it’s like Rome is burning (sex abuse, cover up, financial scandal, fraud etc) and yet in this grand scheme giving a blessing to two homosexuals is definitely not on – because God doesn’t bless sin – whereas seemingly turns a blind eye to the rape of children!! I love the idea that this document was drawn up by men who are sure to be homosexuals – what there aren’t any active homosexuals in the CDF? Are you having a laugh?
