VATICAN RESTRICTS USE OF LATIN EXTRAORDINARY FORM MASS IN ST PETERS, ROME.

The Vatican’s Secretariat of State has issued an instruction regarding the celebration of Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica, suppressing Masses said by a priest by himself, and restricting the celebration of the extraordinary form of Mass in the Latin rite to one altar in the crypt of the basilica.

The instruction comes from the First Section of the Secretariat of State, which deals with the general affairs of the church and is headed by Venezuelan-born Archbishop Peña Parra. He is the third-highest ranking official in the Roman Curia and is known as the “substitute” (or chief of staff).

The instruction, dated March 12, is addressed to three separate bodies. The first is the “extraordinary commissioner of the Fabric of St Peter’s,” meaning the person the pope has appointed to oversee the administration and upkeep of the basilica.

Last June, the pope appointed Archbishop Mario Giordana as extraordinary commissioner; his role is to bring clarity to the administration of the Fabric and update its statutes. The second is the “canons of the Vatican Chapter” and the third is the “service for the liturgical celebrations of the basilica.”

The new Vatican instruction strictly limits the celebration of the extraordinary form of the Latin rite in the basilica, making clear that its usage is not intended to be the norm.

The Lenten season “invites us to return to the Lord with all our heart by giving greater centrality to listening to the Word of God and to the Eucharistic celebration,” reads the beginning of the instruction. “In this sense, wishing to ensure that the holy Masses in the Basilica of St. Peter’s are conducted in a climate of recollection and liturgical decorum, from now henceforth the following has been laid down.”

The instruction makes five specific points without explanation for them, but their aim appears clear: to ensure that there is order in the celebration of the Mass in St Peter’s basilica, and that Masses are celebrated in accordance with the norms and spirit of the liturgical renewal of the Second Vatican Council. It strictly limits the celebration of the extraordinary form of the Latin rite in the basilica, making clear that its usage is not intended to be the norm.

An informed source told America that every morning, priests (many of them working in the Roman Curia) celebrate Mass at side altars of the basilica, frequently by themselves and often in the extraordinary form. The aim of the instruction’s first point is to end this practice of “lone” celebrations.

Every morning, priests (many of them working in the Roman Curia) celebrate Mass at side altars of the basilica, frequently by themselves and often in the extraordinary form.

The second point of the instruction stipulates that “the priests and the faithful who go daily to the basilica for holy Mass should have the possibility to participate in the following celebrations,” listing the time and place of various Masses: at 7.00 a.m. at the Chapel of the Choir; at 7.30 a.m. at the Altar of the Chair; at 8.00 a.m. at the Chapel of the Choir; and at 9.00 a.m. at the Altar of the Chair.

The times of other Masses remain unchanged. It says that “on the occasion of the memory of a saint, whose remains are kept in the basilica, one of the holy Masses can be celebrated at the corresponding altar.” It adds, however, that “on Sundays and on solemnities, the opportunity of celebrating Masses at these times will be evaluated.” This last point presumably refers to the fact that the pope will often celebrate in the basilica on Sundays or solemnities.

PAT SAYS

As a devoted Vatican 11 man I am happy to see Francis and the Vatican taking a step against the Latin Mass brigade.

I did not like it when Benedict permitted priests to say the Old Latin Mass regardless of the bishop’s wishes.

Since Vatican 11 the Vernacular Mass is the normative Mass for Catholics.

It is also the Mass that best expresses the theology and ecclesiology of Vatican 11.

The Old Latin Mass is one that very much panders to mega clericalism and right-wing Catholicism.

It has become the rallying tool of the right wingers.

It is based on  pre Vatican 11 theology – a theology that was quite rightly revised by the Fathers of Vatican 11.

At the Last Supper and on the Cross Christ did not have his back to the people and did not speak a language no one understood.

The Old Latin Mass proclaims a theology of Medievalism while the Vernacular Mass proclaims a theology of encounter with the modern world – bringing God to the modern world.

Maybe there needs to be a modern schism or reformation and allow the Medievalists to go off and form their own church?

An Obituary printed in the Times…..Absolutely Brilliant!! 👌👌

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:

  • Knowing when to come in out of the rain;
  • Why the early bird gets the worm;
  • Life isn’t always fair;
  • And maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don’t spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.

It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn’t defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death,
-by his parents, Truth and Trust,
-by his wife, Discretion,
-by his daughter, Responsibility,
-and by his son, Reason.

He is survived by his 5 stepbrothers;

  • I Know My Rights
  • I Want It Now
  • Someone Else Is To Blame
  • I’m A Victim
  • Pay me for Doing Nothing

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.

If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.

PATS HOMILY. MOTHERS DAY.

The old ways are best? Then go back to the Jewish rite of Passover, because that’s what the Last Supper was, the first and only Mass.

Like

Book and articles have been written on the question of whether the Last Supper was a Passover meal since the Synoptics have a different timeframe for the events of that week from the fourth gospel. And MC, oblivious to that scholarship pronounces his tuppence halfpenny’s worth.

Forget about so-called scholarship for a moment and use your common sense. The symbolism of Passover was the perfect, and only, Jewish didactic context for the momentous events that were to unfold.
Of course the Last Supper was the Passover Seder feast: Passover and Eucharist are primarily both meals and both are about deliverance. The natural configuration of the two is obvious to any one but a fool; but then, they say there’s one born a minute.

That’s the problem. You want to forget scholarship. Period. Perhaps you believe in an inversion of the ontological character of orders which allows those conferred therewith to bypass academic qualification to make a judgement.

Jesus was a Jew. The Apostles were Jews. They were all Jews.

You’re not the brightest.

The Last Supper was indeed the first Mass, and it anticipated the sacrifice of Calvary, otherwise Jesus could not have said: ‘This is my body’ ; ‘This is my blood’.

Of course not, Bella is selective as usual. The Australian commission found the worst abuse it came across was in the 1940s and 1950s.
The causes of the abuse and other crises in the church can only have appeared well before they appeared as crises. Even if you take Vatican 2 as a rupture it is inconceivable that the causes weren’t already rumbling under the surface. Bella would probably reference the modernist crisis but again you have to have things happening already to cause a crisis!

Great decision and about time. Archbishop Roche was also influential in making this decision. He has no time for the prancing around lace brigade. When he gets to Westminster the lace queens and ex Anglican mincing brigade will be in for shock. Mention of Cockroach makes me want to root out my Pius V missal. His recent career has been a real boon to the people of God, I don’t think. Years spent producing that dreadful new translation of the Missal, which has been such an expensive dud that it’s going to have to be done again. And by the way, Pat, you are wrong, as I am sure you know quite well, that the so-called Tridentine form is only 400 years old. Trent standardized the form of the Mass, whereas previously there had been many local variations, which in essential respects had been little changed from the early centuries of the Church – so at least for 1500 years. Compare that to the achievements of Cockroach. And anyone know what he has been doing for the last few years other than snooping on the side altars of St Peter’s, going undercover in his beenie? ( BTW I was perfectly okay with Paul VI’s Mass. )

I was born in 1952 and my Dad brought me to daily Mass from the age of 4.

The Mass changed into the vernacular in the mid 1960s when I was 13/14.

I have never celebrated Mass in Latin.

I think the vernacular Mass was and is central to my vocation.

In his 1912 book on the Roman Mass, Adrian Fortescue wrote: “Essentially the Missal of Pius V is the Gregorian Sacramentary; that again is formed from the Gelasian book, which depends on the Leonine collection. We find the prayers of our Canon in the treatise de Sacramentis and allusions to it in the 4th century. So our Mass goes back, without essential change, to the age when it first developed out of the oldest liturgy of all. It is still redolent of that liturgy, of the days when Caesar ruled the world and thought he could stamp out the faith of Christ, when our fathers met together before dawn and sang a hymn to Christ as to a God. The final result of our inquiry is that, in spite of unsolved problems, in spite of later changes, there is not in Christendom another rite so venerable as ours.”
In a footnote he added: “The prejudice that imagines that everything Eastern must be old is a mistake. Eastern rites have been modified later too; some of them quite late. No Eastern Rite now used is as ancient as the Roman Mass.”

The expression ‘The Mass of Ages’ is a misnomer beloved in traditionalist circles. There was no such thing because Jewish and Christian liturgy always adapted to new cultural contexts, whether language, geography or history.

The obsession with the Tridentine liturgy is not an Irish phenomenon unlike in the UK. Here it’s a tiny minority of devotees.

“There is no contradiction between the two editions of the Roman Missal. In the history of the liturgy there is growth and progress, but no rupture. What earlier generations held as sacred, remains sacred and great for us too, and it cannot be all of a sudden entirely forbidden or even considered harmful. It behooves all of us to preserve the riches which have developed in the Church’s faith and prayer, and to give them their proper place.”

I don’t think these morons have a clue about Vat.II which states in Sacrosanctum Concilium that Latin is the primary language of The Church. It also states that it is the duty of the clergy to see that the faithful are able to say or sing in LATIN those parts of The Mass which pertain to them. These are not my words but comes from Vat II that they all love to quote. There is no mention of Cranmer tables,Orientation, Communion in the hand etc. etc. and they want Liturgical decorum. Decorum is not the word anyone can use when you see priests who don’t follow the rubrics of the Novus Ordo and do their own thing. It wont matter what all the left wing mad mods. try to do, as they have for years to foist on us their liturgical views. We have The Bull of St Pius V which states the Missal remains valid in perpetuity, so no matter what anyone says the it will never cease. I’m just away to watch the livestream Mass from the Sacred Heart Church in Limerick a wonderful liturgy, full of decorum, I recommend it to you all.

Latin was never the language of the Faithful; it was the language principally of clerics. Therefore it was never the language of the Church as Vat II defined it. Which means that statement about Latin in those documents is indeed a lie.
If the thought bothers you that a Roman Catholic cleric would lie here, be bothered no more, since we all now know that lying on their part was very small beer compared with what they were doing to children.

When MC’s argument runs out he resorts to the only arms left in his arsenal – sexual abuse of children – to find it’s a grenade which blows up in his face every time because instances of church sexual abuse are dwarfed by the volume perpretated outside of the church.
To use the crimes comitted against innocent (= all) children to furrher one’s own obsessions is perhaps the worst abuse of all, since it relegates the suffering of the innocent to the status of a means to the end of self-gratification.

I am sympathetic to the Old Rite, but am struck by how its celebration has apparently become so common at St Peter’s that action is now being taken to limit its use. This suggests – let’s face it, as we all know the signs – a high-camp clericalist culture in the Vatican entirely contrary to the Holy Father’s wishes. I also suspect that many of these clerics are young, recently ordained acolytes of Old Mother Burke who, when not prancing around in cassocks doing the jobs which lay secretaries could perform more effectively, are swotting up liturgies to perform for their own delight. NB the significant absence of ordinary folks. ( And don’t give me that stuff about being surrounded by angels and saints. )

I think the history is now well established and we see it played out here again.
As seen on the ground Vatican 2 was about vernacular liturgy, mass facing the people and emphasising the community.
However the actual documents didn’t say this and the first edition of the missal talks about private masses and the priest turning to the people which indicates it thinking he is facing away to celebrate.
Every presbytery surely has the documents of Vatican 2 but seemingly nobody has ever read them.
However this plays out in the future we’re talking about two irreconcilable approaches and I think the church is hurtling towards schism because let’s face it, it requires huge charity to get the different viewpoints together in one church and that is rather lacking.
I think the first to go will be the liberal side who will go for women priests etc, unless the next pope is in Francis’s mould and forces the liberal agenda through in which case goodbye Bella et Cie.

Oh and what is it about Oratarians in that they all look like Bishop Robert Byrne (short, cuddly and trying desperately hard to pretend to be butch) that hard working and dedicated stalwart who loves hard work and graft – who beams like a Mother Hen when pictured with pretty young things considering the priesthood- a man v happy in his vocation let me tell you duckey!!
It was very amusing when Peter Jennings, Elsies Press Secretary and his precious pet (Rottweiler more like) was at an Oxford college dinner and called an intense dweeb he got into an altercation with: ‘A little shit’ Elsie rode it out saying, ‘I know he’s a Rottweiler but he’s my Rottweiler’ – oh. as Mary Hopkins usued to sing, ‘’Those were the days my friend I thought they’d never end we usued to dance forever and a day.’
Fr Moss. like Fr Murphy, must have his admirers in Rome – and almostthey both are of the parish’ – indeed Fr Moss gets camper by the day – dearie – while Aldo looks on proudly and lovingly ((ah bless).
Osman is still embedded in Dorchester on Thames – Stock was there before him – the mystery, given a Vicar Generals penchant for moving on clergy who overstay their welcome – Osman has been languishing in that God forsaken outpost bereft of so many creature comforts for coming up to over 25 years!!!
Me thinks it’s not who you know but what you know in Osmans case and of course he knows too much!!
Oh I am enjoying this little chat nay gossip over the garden fence in this rather dreary Sunday afternoon!

You should have placed a full stop after ‘it’ and capatalised the first letter of ‘another’.
Go back to school, Bella.

Now, I didn’t write that @2:57, but I’m wondering who did because he seems to know more than I know ! I must up my game. He’s so right about the Hagley Road lot, load of miserable shits who wander around like they are all 95 year old Newmans even when they are in their twenties. And what is with those round NHS glasses ? The house bit smells of boiled cabbage and is painted lime green, and various shit and off shit shades of brown. They could do with burning a bit of incense in there, never mind just in the church part. Bishop Byrne is the size of a fully detached house these days as he’s settled in to his episcopacy up North. Oh, how dreadful to be so far away from the Royal Opera, darlings ! Jennings is long since dead now, but he wasn’t all he was cracked up to be. Very second rate. They just wouldn’t pay the going rate for anybody better. Moss – poor thing if he’s got Aldo as one of his supporters and encouragers. Aldo’s endorsement doesn’t usually end well for the endorsee. Think Michael. And as for Osman, surely it’s time for genteel retirement to some Dowager’s private chapel for him ?

Oh I am – it’s true and I do love a Hob Nob or a Custard Cream – but in homage to today’s topic I’m going to break open my Adam and Steve Biscuit Box from Fortnum and Mason – with lots of dunking I’ll have you know and who doesn’t like a soggy dunk!!

Oh! Granny Grammar stop being so pedantic, you’re always giving out to me. I notice that you don’t do it to others who make spelling or grammatical mistakes. I’m beginning to think you don’t like me.

Why the heckling about a full stop or upper case? I’m bemused – it’s like, is that all you’ve got – forget abusive as hominem and let’s be the punctuation police (full stop omitted for theatrical effect)

Sure everyone knows theres no such thing as a private mass. Mass is not a mecanno set. It is a living wonderous mystery. We are well past the consecration bell stage. Liturgically the bell is a nice touch

In advance of the appointing of a new prefect, a canonical visitation of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments is to begin tomorrow by the head of the Italian Bishops’ Liturgical Commission, and one of the leaders in the campaign to restrict substantially the use of Summorum Pontificum, Bishop Claudio Maniago.

It will evaluate Cardinal Sarah’s management of the last six years. How it will reflect on Arthur Roche is another interesting question.

Can Italians evaluate the damage done to our English language worship by Arthur Roche? He is one of the guys who made the Mass unprayable. He justified the silly “like the dewfall” by saying “it’s very modern and idiomatic language. Why, I saw an ad for Mountain Dew on my way here!” He is a liturgical criminal.

‘Like the dewfall’ is beautiful. poetic language. The word, ‘prejudice’ comes to mind. No, it describes perfectly your ideas expressed in this blog.

The damage done by the Roman Missal 2011 in silencing God’s people in God’s house was done under Sarah’s three immediate predecessors.

Does anyone seriously believe that the executed Galilean physically rose from the dead let alone was the product of a union between a teenage virgin and a ghost?
Yeshua as a sapiential teacher, as a worker of ‘wonders’, as an eschatological preacher and as a powerful moral reality? Absolutely no doubts there.
The issue being is that if n organised ring can convince people to believe in the physical resurrection and in he superstructure that has been constructed around such a claim
for example transubstantiation then not only will such a ring have people believing anything else they say but more disturbingly doing anything in the name of those claims.
The Roman Church is not only a parody of ‘Christianity’ in that it is ‘Churchianity’- as this blog so amply demonstrates- but it is an instrument for violence in that it is the worlds largest paedophile ring
Let us keep that in mind when people wish to discuss the relative merits of en elitist exclusionary Rite

Natlog: You make an important and central point.
I think that wandering Jewish fella probably spoke a lot of good sense on moral issues and encouraged good compassionate treatment of one’s neignbour. But all the other “add ons” attributed to him, his resurrection, miracles etc, and in particular asserting him to be the son of God: well I believe that is all exaggeration, initially by credulous naive followers anxious for an expected messiah and subsequentially, like a huge snowball gathering momentum, that Jewish teacher has been elevated and perpetuated by institutional religion.

Hello Bishop I found your website on the internet. I run a wee snack van in the east end of Glasgow and like many people the lockdown has hit me hard. I also lost loved ones to the Covid and last year I gave money to start a garden of Remerbrance started by the local priest fr White.
https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/stmarys-prayer-garden
I’ve not seen anything more about it and now fr Whote is raising more money for a court case
https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/freedomforfaith
to pay for a QC (85k seems a lot). I’m sure everything is above board but it would be good to know what’s happening with the money and what happens to anything left over. People should know where ther money is going in these hard times.
God bless,
Archie

Archie.
Father Tom White was removed from the Curia by the late Archbishop Tartaglia.
Does he have permission from the Diocesan Administrator. 9think not)
Please contact Monsignor Bradley about this at the Holy Cross Chapel 0141 423 0105
There is going to be a National garden or wall of remembrance by the Scottish Government.
Tom White likes publicity.
Sadly he and his “affair” have party company after 30 years so he is bored.

Ephesians 4:5-10 GNB
There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism; there is one God and Father of all, who is Lord of all, works through all, and is in all. Each one of us has received a special gift in proportion to what Christ has given.

1 Corinthians 1:12-13
“What I mean is this: every one of you is declaring, ‘I belong to Paul,’ or ‘I belong to Apollos,’ or ‘I belong to Cephas,’ or ‘I belong to Christ.’ 13. Has Christ been split up? Was it Paul that was crucified for you, or was it in Paul’s name that you were baptised?”
1 Corinthians, 1 – Bíblia Católica

“Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He really find faith on the earth?” (Luke 18:8b).

1Corinthians 15
12But if it is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. 14And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith. 15More than that, we are then found to be false witnesses about God, for we have testified about God that he raised Christ from the dead. But he did not raise him if in fact the dead are not raised. 16For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised either. 17And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. 18Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost. 19If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied.
