WONERSH SEMINARY CONTINUED FUNDRAISING AFTER CLOSURE ANNOUNCEMENT – IN BREACH OF CHARITY LAWS?

Rector Ewing

Yesterday morning, after being informed of this blog, Wonersh seminary parish panicked and pulled the plug on their college blog, pretending it was for routine maintenance.

The bishops announced the closure of the seminary last October and it was no longer proper for fundraising to continue, especially as the seminary is registered with the charity commissioners.

Who decided to continue with the fundraising then?

And here is a copy of a fundraising letter sent out 5 months after the bishops decision to close the seminary SIGNED BY RECTOR EWING !!!

The letter dated 12 th Feb was received by the recipient on 20th Feb.

No wonder the bishops are upset with Ewing.

An English church source has stated:

“Ewing is going to have to return any money he got since 17 th October last year. Otherwise the charity police will be after him. This might cost him a hoped-for mitre”?

Why raise funds for an institution that is due to close in 12 weeks?

Whats going on ???

Good question, Pat. Why raise funds for an institution about to close? What’s the difference between a Synod and Sinod? A, Y ! Nite all.

The Charities Commission are getting very tough on trustees who aren’t up to the demands. Bishop Moth shared responsibility for EVERY activity, non-activity, and misactivity of that establishment. So did every last one of the trustees, whose names have now been taken down. Did any blog readers know who they were and what that said for their calibre in their other jobs? Do the CBCEW who are so keen on overreach have a Seminaries Committee? Surely all the students are ashamed of the management and the entire board? What does this tell the student body about the quality of their “vocations”?

Just laughing at this during a break at night shift. After its closure St John’s remains a legal entity. Therefore it is not breaking any laws including charity laws/regulations. Can someone on this blog please do your homework more carefully.

Conserving a listed building is (usually) a worthy issue in itself and collaborating conservation groups should be named explicitly. Isn’t there a “Catholic” one already? If Victorian artefacts are to be refitted at Allen Hall this should have been stated. Are we to fund the transportation of the parquet floor? Seminaries in what used to be called the “third world” like non fitted rugs over their floorboards. In what senses is Allen Hall not exactly taking over or absorbing St John’s, and for how long? Is there a real plan at all?

Leaving special premises and examining organisational options should be treated as an interesting project and large amounts of information continually supplied accordingly. The Charities Commission and St Mary’s University, are perfectly entitled to comment publicly on this low performance. And what does chief legal officer, St Mary’s University, think of the calibre of Allen Hall trustees? Is there a joint committee of the two seminaries which are at the very least to be co-located?

The recently displayed appeal was morally misleading. It should have contained an explanation of how donations would be valued while St John’s gets absorbed and who at Allen Hall is in charge of rightly administering them. The appeal wording on the web site when we were reading it specifically mentioned maintenance work on parts of the current fabric, which detail was obviously already not true. We know when we were reading the web site and what sort of detail was on it. This means we now have to be ahead of the game in publicly querying everything, in case there is / isn’t an explanation.

If they really want to explain that Wonersh still exists then they should spell it out and what is being done with the assets. Why would we donate if there is a huge property to sell? Can’t the technology park operators / out of town shopping centre developers raise enough? There may be an answer, so the jobsworths should give it. 3.07, as a jobsworth you think bullying the public by inaccuracy and lack of detail is correct for an Alter Christus to project. You don’t care for the several bona fide bishops trying to send students to St John’s.

If you want sleeping dogs left to lie, the best method is to look shipshape. Yet again commenters – who might have been asked to comment by the senior trustees for all we could guess – fall back on the idea of police not arresting them for their apparently low standard of proceeding. Homework = publicly identifiable joint committee and published plans. Not our homework (firstly): yours.

Like

This is a Rector who decided to go ahead with this plan for donations.
The decision was only taken in October to close it.
Each dioceses that sends seminarians to the seminary will decide where to send their seminarians too for their own dioceses however it is most will likely they go to Allan hall the 11 in total.
St. John’s will become surplus to the Archdioceses of Southwark and most likely be sold.
There will be a lot of decisions taken after Easter.

Like

Totally wrong St John’s is a registered charity and the plans are to close the seminary in July and wind down the charity.
You cannot ask people for donations also to be left in their will if there is no St. John’s.
This is totally against Charity regulations and that is from the Charity regulators today.
Any fund for this project collected from October should be offered back to the donor.

Was it + Wilson of Southwark who ordered the Wonersh website taken down ? He’s apparently given the same instruction from on high to Little Peter’s new parish in Wandsworth. Seems like a pattern emerging. Irrespective of the rights and wrongs of the Wonersh fundraising issues – and I tend to wonder why they are continuing to raise money for something that is closing and going to be sold on no doubt for a considerable profit – it does appear that + Wilson fancies himself as some sort of Mussolini issuing diktats and instructions from on high. I pity the priests of Southwark, who I think are in line for a rough ride – no, not in the Rawhide Purcell sense ! – over the next year as Wilson begins to flex his muscles, which he hides under a number of folds of flesh at the moment, but they are certainly there and he likes to use them.

What utter nonsense. The Wandsworth website photograph was juvenile, immature even and it was the Archbishop’s solemn duty to remove it. I have no idea why you cannot understand that very straightforward duty. Calm down, take a rational approach to these matters and improve the standard of your comments.

Ah, yes, of course, THAT PHOTOGRAPH of Little Peter quaffing champers ! But, is that reason enough to remove the whole website ? Why not just change the photo ? Excuse me Archbishop John Wilson is not speak from on high.
Archbishop Wilson is the metropolitan of the area and a trustee.
As such Archbishop Wilson has responsibility for ALL aspects of the Archdioceses and he sadly has inherited one mess after another.
He is in the process of reorganising the full Archdioceses although this will take time.
You have to trust deans and Rectors to do the correct things both legally and morally.
As a Bishop you have great responsibilities to the Clergy, Religious and Lay Faithful but also the Trustees, Charity Commissioner and in the UK HMRC.
Archbishop Peter Smith was a lovely man but not really an administrator so Archbishop Wilson while being a Pastoral man he is also got massive amounts of admin.
And he is in parishes all the time so he is not on high he is with his people.

The Farage interview on TalkRadio. Boy, what a pair of unsavoury, disgusting characters ! I certainly wouldn’t like to be sitting on the bus next to that interviewer. Uuurrgghh ! But, as to some of the substance, both of them seem to think that the Brexit issue is ‘done and dusted’. Well, I think we are all in for a bit of a shock in the months to come, as the camouflage of Covid begins to recede and the real damage of Brexit begins to become apparent. There is trouble ahead, not least the very clear message that is being received by various governments that Britain is not a trusted partner in anything these days. I think that the DUP have found that out to their cost, although it serves them right for playing the blackmail game over Brexit a couple of years back. Then today, we hear of Britain’s geo-political-secutiry-military pivot which will see their newest aircraft carrier positioning in the Pacific and the Indian Ocean. WTF ? The British really need to stay at home for a bit and sort out some of their own problems – like an economy that is going to go down the tubes, like an education system that fails so many children who come out of school functionally illiterate, like child poverty where children end up having to access free school meals during school holidays because their families are so economically disadvantaged, like being a splintered society where immigration failures such as positive inclusion and integration result in divided and splintered communities….I could go on ! Even sorting out Meghan and Harry ! But, please spare us, dear Brits, all the guff about ‘punching above our weight’, ‘playing on the international stage’, ‘sunlit uplands’, and so on.

The reason for the web site being taking down is to allow updated and also ongoing issues in the parish.

The alternative to good grammar is poor communication. Where words mean what you want them to mean without any agreed meaning.

A legal representative of KFC manages to arrange a meeting with the Pope.

After receiving the papal blessing, he whispers, “Your eminence, we have an offer for you. KFC is prepared to donate $100 million dollars to the church if you change the Lord’s Prayer from give us this day our daily bread to give us this day our daily chicken”.

The Pope responds, “That is impossible. The Prayer is the word of the Lord – it must not be changed.” “Well,” says the KFC man, “we anticipated your reluctance. For this reason, we will increase our offer to $300 million dollars. All we require is that you change the Lord’s Prayer from give us this day our daily bread to give us this day our daily chicken”.

Again, the Pope replies, “That, my son, is impossible. For the prayer is the word of the Lord and it must not be changed.” Finally, the KFC guy says, “Your Holiness, we at KFC respect your adherence to your faith, but we do have one final offer. We will donate $500 million dollars – that’s half a billion dollars – to the great Catholic Church if you would only change the Lord’s Prayer from give us this day our daily bread to give us this day our daily chicken. Please consider it.” And he leaves.

The next day the Pope convenes the College of Cardinals. “There is some good news,” he announces, “and some bad news.” “The good news is that the Church has come into $500 million dollars.”

“And the bad news, your eminence?” asks a Cardinal. “We’re losing the Wonderbread account.”

Anon@10:37: I like it!
But your dig at the transubstantiation duplicitous myth underscores a reality. I commented on it a few days ago. That was in relation to the RCC belief that a validly ordained priest, even if laicised and unrepentant in a state of mortal sin, can still change bread and wine into the body and blood of a 2000+ years deceased Jew, who also happens to be the Almighty Creator of the universe. The wonders of ontological change! The very concept is preposterous, and I see in it a resemblance to the supposed magical powers of an African tribal ju-ju symbol.
I think one of the reasons for clerical perpetuation of this bizarre transubstantiation belief lies in the perception of specialness, power, and privilege it confers on the male clerical caste. It may also explain their resistance to the idea of women priests.

It is undeniable that it is closing as a seminary. However, is it remaining open for a different purpose? And does that purpose fulfil the requirements of charitable causes?

Narcissism, vanity, or self-love is when people have an inflated sense of their own importance, a deep need for excessive attention and admiration, troubled relationships, and a lack of empathy for others.
Freud’s idea of narcissism described a pathology which manifests itself in the inability to love others, a lack of empathy, emptiness, boredom, and an unremitting need to search for power, while making the person unavailable to others. Karen Horney saw the narcissistic personality as a temperament trait molded by a certain kind of early environment, (primary deprivation of mother love). She did not see narcissistic needs and tendencies as inherent in human nature.
Normal or healthy narcissism is an essential component of mature self-esteem and basic self-worth. Dr. Craig Malkin describes a lack of healthy narcissism as echoism, a term inspired by the nymph Echo in the mythology of Narcissus.

The great commandment is clearly given by Jesus: the greatest among many things that man/woman could do is to love. To love God wholly and totally (with one’s heart soul, and mind) and to love one’s neighbour are the greatest commandments of all. These two are inseparable. One cannot say “I love God” but hates his/ her neighbour or has nothing to do with his/ her neighbour. Because God is love and that is why we are able to love. What pleases the Lord and what makes one worthy of the Lord’s saving grace. From God’s love, mercy and compassion follow. But loving God and loving one’s neighbour are vague concepts unless concertized, let us then make our love real so we may share real love with those who need it.
To love is to serve. To serve lovingly our brothers and sisters, especially those who are in need in our midst. By serving others one expresses his/ her authentic love to God. There are a lot of ways of showing our love for God and neighbour. Loving God is abstract unless it leads us to serving our community and others. And who is my neighbour…?
