ALL RIGHT THINKING PEOPLE MUST REJECT VATICAN BAN ON BLESSING GAY UNIONS.

Vatican says it will not bless same-sex unions, calling them a ‘sin’

By Rob Picheta and Delia Gallagher, CNN

March 15, 2021

Rome(CNN)The Vatican said Monday that the Catholic Church would not bless same-sex unions, in a combative statement approved by Pope Francis that threatens to widen the chasm between the church and much of the LGBTQ community.

Explaining their decision in a lengthy note on Monday, the Holy See referred to same-sex unions as a “choice,” described them as sinful and said they “cannot be recognized as objectively ordered” to God’s plans. The stance is certain to disappoint millions of gay and lesbian Catholics around the world.

“The blessing of homosexual unions cannot be considered licit,” the Vatican’s top doctrinal office, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, wrote in the statement.

God “does not and cannot bless sin,” the statement added.

Pope Francis, who has frequently been praised for his welcoming tone towards LGBTQ people both within and outside the Church, approved the note.
The decision is a setback for Catholics who had hoped the institution would modernize its approach to homosexuality. Dozens of countries, include many in western Europe, have legalized same-sex marriages, and the Church’s reticence to embrace LGBTQ people has long held the potential to alienate it from younger followers.

“It is not licit to impart a blessing on relationships or partnerships, even stable, that involve sexual activity outside of marriage, as is the case of the unions between persons of the same sex,” the statement said.

Vatican says Pope’s comments on same-sex civil unions were taken out of context

The statement says that gays and lesbians, as individuals, may receive a blessing if they live according to Church teaching.

But blessing same-sex unions, the Vatican said, would send a sign that the Catholic Church approves and encourages “a choice and a way of life that cannot be recognized as objectively ordered to the revealed plans of God.”

The statement was issued as a “response” to questions from pastors and the faithful on the question. In a commentary provided with the Monday statement, the Vatican insisted that “the negative judgment on the blessing of unions of persons of the same sex does not imply a judgment on persons.”

The decision will alarm those who pinned their hopes of a more open and progressive Catholic leadership on the reformist Pope.

Last year, it seemed that Francis had advocated for civil union laws for same-sex couples when he gave an interview for a documentary.

“Homosexual people have a right to be in a family. They’re children of God and have a right to a family. Nobody should be thrown out or be made miserable over it,” the Pope said, adding: “What we have to create is a civil union law. That way they are legally covered.”

But the Vatican quickly rowed back from those remarks, saying they had been taken out of context and did not indicate a change in doctrine.

This article has been corrected to reflect that the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith referred to same-sex unions, not homosexuality itself, as a “sin” and a “choice.” A push alert with the incorrect wording was also sent.

PAT SAYS

The Vatican, where bishops and priests are having sex with each other regularly, has decided that priests cant bless gay couples and their relationships as they are “sins”.

And most Catholic seminaries are now gay knocking shops.

What utter hypocrisy!

When gay couples like straight coupled really love each other and are together for while, it is notbsex that is keeping them together. It is love, an emotional bond, companionship and friendship that is keeping them together.

Does not God bless all forms of love? Can we not do the same.

I have been blessing gay couples for 35 years and will continue doing it as long as I’m able and as long as couples need me.

If you look on gay apps, all these so-called loving couples tend to be in ‘open-relationships’. I know of a well known catholic lay man in the republic who is gay, married but has an open relationship and casual sex with other men. This man is highly involved (professionally) with bishops, priests and religious.

It’s why the gays lobbied so that adultery is not one of the grounds for same sex marriages. It’s a cultural norm among the gays.

I will not be lectured at by a Church that practices hypocrisy and double standards.....says:

If you look through any diocesan directory, you will find a great number of priests who are engaged in open sexual relationships in that they are cruising around the countryside going to woods, and parks and laybys and truck stops, as well as gay saunas, gay clubs and bars when they are open, and use Grindr and various other gay dating and casual sex apps. They are also consuming large amounts of gay porn on the internet. They too are highly involved (professionally) with bishops, other priests and religious. So, the difference ? I would suggest that the Church sorts out its own big problem first, then they can come and lecture the rest of us. Until that happens, I am not in the slightest inclined to take note of anything that they say, because it comes out of hypocrisy and double standards. I would rather trust those who lead their gay lives in the open and in the light. At least they are being honest and authentic and I can trust them.

Dear Pat, good evening to you. I am so upset with Pope Francis. I now just wish he would go to God, and a new pope would come along and start being kind to gay people. If I could afford it I would cut all ties with this institution, but I am too old now to do so without making myself on the streets. I know you did it, or rather were forced to do it.

Even if he was found not guilty because of lack of evidence, that doesn’t mean the case is completely close or that the court believes he is innocent:

A Sexual Risk Order may be made in respect of an individual where it is believed that the individual has done an act of a sexual nature as a result of which there is reasonable cause to believe that they pose a risk of harm to the public in the UK or children or vulnerable adults abroad. ”

Magna at 11.39. You are not as clever, or as learned, as you think you are and would have us all believe.

Haven’t you read Paul in Romans? He believes that homosex is the outcome of HETEROSEXUAL lust. This is why he thinks same-gender sex is morally wrong: it is a product of lust rather than love. And lust, to Paul, whether straight or non-straight, is morally wrong.

Paul’s opinion of homosex is typical of how the ancients thought about this form of physical intimacy.

Do you really think that given modern understanding of sexual orientation Paul et alii would still condemn loving homosexual unions and their sexual intimacy?

You may remember a joke Pat once cracked on the blog. What is the difference between a straight man and a gay man?

Six pints.

Under the influence of drugs, including alcohol, people will sometimes do uncharacteristic things, even such highly uncharacteristic things as engage in gay sex.

Drug use (in the form of certain plants, and, of course, alcohol) was not uncommon in the Greco-Roman world of Paul, and it could result in heady orgiastic sex, sometimes with almost no holds barred. This is the context of Paul’s condemnation in Romans. And he was right to attribute homosexual sex acts here to drug-induced and unrestrained lust. But it eludes me as to how on earth you could extrapolate from this the belief that Paul would not have morally condemned these acts in any other social context.

A careful reading of Romans reveals that Paul was horrified by the acts themselves, not by the context in which they were committed.

Some argue that the word ‘unnatural’ in Romans is better translated as ‘uncustomary’, implying that Paul’s condemnation of these acts was due to the fact that straight people here had, under the influence of drugs, overstepped their own customary boundaries for sex: for heterosexual sex. It seems a fair point, on the face of it. But we keep coming back to the fact that Paul’s horror at, and condemnation of, these acts was caused not by the context of drug use, or the presumed sexuality of the participants, but by the very acts themselves.

Paul morally condemns homosexual sex not for the circumstances in which it can happen, but because this sex is intrinsically wrong and cannot, therefore, be morally justified under any circumstances.

Pat, even though some (perhaps many) bishops and priests are living in serious violation of their vow or promise of celibacy (and, therefore, in utter hypocrisy) does not mean that we should ignore their teaching IF it is morally sound; that would be a self-serving, vengeful, and, quite frankly, petty cop-out. Didn’t Jesus say of the Pharisees do as they say, but not as they do? Wouldn’t he say the same of these men?
Jesus knew the hypocrisy of the Pharisees, but he acknowledged, too, their authority to teach (that they occupied ‘the seat of Moses’).
The bishops have such teaching authority, too, even though many of them ignore it. They will be judged for this, as were the Pharisees. But we, too, will be judged if we ignore authoritative teaching by them, just because we prefer to be guided by their hypocrisy alone.
The Vatican’s teaching on homosexual unions is indeed sound, since nowhere in Scripture, in either the Old or New Testaments, are homosexual sex acts approved in any way. By contrast, heterosexual sex acts ARE morally approved, provided they do not constitute fornication.
Some argue that the scriptural authors had no conception of homosexuality as an orientation, and no conception either of loving homosexual unions. This may be true, but with respect, it is beside the point being made by the authors: that homosexual sex acts, regardless of their motive or purpose, are always morally inadmissable. No circumstance can ever morally excuse them, just like theft and lying. Homosexual sex acts are, therefore, intrinsically wrong.

@ 11.19, I do have a life…in Christ. But it comes with a proviso: obey my word.
Mores and attitudes of 2000 years ago? Age does not make irrelevant whatever is for the moral and commonl good. It is why, even today, we have laws modelled on some of those ancient prohibitions, for instance, on theft and murder.
Had the more important of these been more widely heeded, Europe in the 20th century might not have been plunged into global war not once but twice.
Yes, you are completely free not to listen. But you are not free to avoid the consequences of not listening.

Oh, please do go and get a life. You are talking about mores and attitudes of thousands of years ago, and we have grown and developed since then and hopefully caste off many of the prejudicial and harmful things of the past. Gay men and women are not intrinsically disordered and their behaviour is not intrinsically wrong, no more so than for the rest of humanity. We know that countries and societies that perpetuate this kind of thinking, and even worse, persecution of minorities who diverge from the majority norm, are societies and cultures that we think of as needing development and bringing in to the modern age. That is the way with the Catholic Church and the Vatican and its teaching. So, please, spare us all your moral judgmental protestations. Remember, we are not listening anymore !

The law is a very technical thing, brake for instance theft, theft can be “excused, if you like, in a court of law, say for instance a mother is brought before a magistrate for the offence of shoplifting and it becomes apparent she was trying to feed her baby and family and, had no other options or means, then the law could deal with cases like these in a very compassionate way.
The magistrate does not merely “forget” the offence — oh no, the law has mechanisms built-in to protect those most vulnerable in our society… — it is called ‘The Overriding Objective,’ which means: what is the best action / route to take: I.e. is a tin of baked-beans and some baby food something which is of interest to ‘Public Justice’ if the Overriding Objective is that a mother needs to feed her children — surely it is a crime, and a shameful one, too, if society is such where a mother is “forced” to break the law just to put food into her children’s mouths.
If I were a magistrate I would make make The Overriding Objective perfectly clear to the Court and, in hope of ensuring we are not confronted with such a Human Rights violations again — with emphasis on the mother and her children who are the real victims of a crime, here (in my opinion of balancing the legal facts and other objectives allowed for by the law and relevant Acts).
I do not claim to be a legal egal, however I do have on the ground experience and involvement with homeless kitchens and other social justice issues . . . x

You have a point, Peter. Nevertheless, a court would not, could not, declare such a theft by any name other than ‘theft’.

Theft may be mitigated, but it remains a wrong action, otherwise there would be no need for mitagation. This applies to homosexual sex as well.

Does not God bless all forms of love? A good, and highly pertinent, question. And the answer is, of course, an emphatic ‘Yes, he does!’
But God does not bless all expressions of love. For example, the sexual expression of love between siblings. Such expression is not a mere theoretical possibility; it has actually occurred.
Love may cover a multitude of sins, but it never excuses them.

But what is one to make of this bit of the Gospel, which was the mantra of 1950s Irish Catholicism:
“if any man come to me, and hate not his father and his mother, his wife and children, and brethren and his sisters, yea, and even his own life also, he cannot be be my discipline”
Should that not have been written over the door of every seminary in Ireland, for it certainly goes far to explain irish Catholic institutions of the 1950s, which atomised society, tore infants from their mothers, turned girls out of their father’s homes if the bishops condemned them, scattered over a million of its people into anonymous exile, incarcerated women in Church laundries as slaves, beat unmercifully children in in its educational institutions, encouraged the hatred of all non-Catholics ; and since they claimed they had the power to forgive sin, they forgave each other in an endless circularity of whatever you say, say nothing and we’ll deny everything and cover it up.

For the RC church, sex is fundamentally about making babies and marriage is about creating a family. That’s it. So, not only will it not approve of same-sex unions, but it regards as invalid any marriage where the partners agree beforehand not to have children through artificial birth control. It would be better if the RC church used a completely different word for what it understands as marriage, since it is so different from the secular definition. Also, it doesn’t bless friendships which is what it regards same-sex unions as being.

Like

Marriage is administered by the couple to each other before statutory witnesses (and regulation officiant). (This is why it’s important for secular authority not to mess up.) A prayer of blessing should be from our friends. What Bp Pat can do, doesn’t translate well to a colossal ontological monolith.

I’m not a homosexual but I’ve had plenty of sex – I know, takes a bow – but fellatio and anal sex and mutual masturbation are on the menu for both straight and gay people – is it the up the bum bit that freaks the moral theologians out – I mean the idea that every sex act be open to life is a big ask don’t you think – rules out fellatio (unless you know something I don’t), mutual masturbation and the piece de resistance anal sex – that’s definitely not open to life but easily my fav!
And why obsess about what we do in the bedroom – Jeez this much I know it’s messy, complicated and if it’s going to be fun – always involves sin –
The moral theologians understanding of sex is so idealised it’s just not humanly possible – try reading Love and Resposibility by Karol Wojolta – it’s not so much about the birds and the bees it’s more about sex on another planet.
This latest Vatican canon ball is preparing the ground for a swing to the right when Francis moves on – plus when the Vatican relinquish their share in the building that houses Italy’s biggest gay sauna then we can talk.
Oh and the church blessed the grave where St John Henry Newman is buried with his long suffering boyfriend so can’t see what stops them blessing the union of two men committed to each other – which orifice they put their bits in isn’t an ecumenical matter it’s a private matter surely.
They care more about what goes on in the bedroom than they do the boardroom that much I know.
