DID FR GER FITZGERALD SAY HIS “GOODBYE’S AT LAST THURSDAY’S MASS?

Here is the end of Fr Ger Fitzgerald’s Mass last Thursday where he thanks everyone and seemed to be saying his goodbye’s.

He did celebrate Mass in Sunday but it started 15 minutes late and while broadcast lives was not saved and put with all his previous Masses on the church Facebook page.

The word in that the bishop, Fintan Monahan had contacted him on Thursday and told him to come and see him the next day, Friday.

On Thursday he did indicate that there was to be a big change.

Last night he was still described on the diocesan site as a Co PP.

Fintan Monahan had said that the investigation into Ger would follow all the appropriate civil and ecclesiastical procedures.

Did Fintan Monahan know that Ger was saying Mass as usual on Sunday?

Why was there a 15 minute delay in the Sunday Mass happening?

Why is the recording of the Sunday Mass saved like all previous Masses?

So, the questions arising:

Fintan

1. Are Ger and Fintan Monahan involved in a standoff on the matter?

2. Is Ger resisting Fintan?

3. Is Fintan adraid to push Ger?

4. Has Fintan met either of the two ladies involved – Ms Drake or Ms Whelan?

Pat Buckley, I strongly advise you to thread extremely carefully. What kind of person gets pleasure out of tearing a good honest and decent man down? Im beginning to wonder do you have a personal problem with Fr Ger,did he refuse you’re sexual advances and bruise your all too big ego…..?
You also have the audacity to bring a ladies name up with no permission to do so,you drag these people threw the mud hoping you will have company down there but Fr Ger and Tina Whelan will never be as low and as nasty as yourself and Yvonne Drake. Maybe you should try you’re luck with that piece of trash, i don’t even think someone like her would entertain you as you truly are a piece of filth. Pat go and read today’s gospel. Vermin Pat Buckley, that’s all you are.

11:40 pm – “I strongly advise you to tread carefully…?” We strongly advise you to go elsewhere if you don’t like what is discussed on this blog, nobody is forcing you to come on here and read.
The priest has been playing two women parishioners, off, against each other; it’s reckless and disgraceful and not to mention damaging.
These issues need to be discussed in an open and healthy forum — and in open daylight — not behind closed doors in Roman Bishops’ offices. Very, very unhealthy business… I can tell you this from firsthand observations — observations I have no intentions of looking the “other way” from.
I have a keen eye for detail… everything has to be just so, so it does.
I digress, so I do. So let me get back on track, Charlie boy.
When people in positions of trust go round and cause unecessary distress within spiritual environments, where people can be hurt and damaged by such behaviours as these, then the priest and two-women will indeed be discussed and, as a matter of course.
Nobody is forcing you to read, you can always throw the kettle on x

sadly it looks like the Bishops hands are tied he has two against one as Ger and Tina are standing united as one.
Canon Law will be on Ger’s side unless the Bishop can get more evidence.
However as a young Bishop he will not forget the publicity this has caused his dioceses in a time of pandemic.
There is two victims here Yvonne and the Bishop.

Of course Father Ger and Tina are not going to confess why should they.
Father Ger has told people he has trouble with his celibacy and he is a liar is he says otherwise.
Father Ger loves the title Father and the perks of being Father in an Oratory.
Ger is not even a team player in the dioceses of Killaloe.
Maybe the temptation of too much flesh in a parish would be overwhelming.
Ger and Tina may think they have won hands down but Ger has to live with the struggles and some day they will be too strong.
He should go now while young.

This is classic “shoot the messenger’ response from so many angry people, deflecting attention from those who are at the centre of this mess – Lugs and Ger – and their actions that have brought them to this place. Also, the women involved were engaged in a rather foul mouthed spat on social media, and so have opened themselves up to public scrutiny, and in many ways appear to have conducted themselves in such a way that they are not worthy of much consideration or respect. But, let us concentrate on the two clerical figures in this. Firstly Ger: He has nobody else to blame but himself for his troubles. He has broken his public vows of celibacy apparently numerous times, and engaged in lying and duplicity in that he has by his very life and position been telling us that he is celibate. Why should I trust him, or even have the slightest respect for him ? No doubt he is currently holed up somewhere licking his wounds and feeling very sorry for himself and very hard done by. It might be worthwhile for him to think about the harm he has done, not to himself so much, but to us, the Church, the credibility of his already much discredited clerical class etc. etc. As for Lugs: The man does seem a bit like a walking disaster area, and one does not have a sense that he is dealing with this matter in an expeditious and effective manner. The man would probably not have got past being a primary school deputy headteacher in any other life. So, it’s very disappointing all round, and difficult as it might be for the parties involved, I am very happy for + Pat to highlight this mess and the people involved in it, if only to show just what a disaster area the clergy and bishops are – as if we didn’t already know – and hopefully to disrupt this so much that somebody, somewhere, will realise that change is well past due. So, angry commentators – who will almost exclusively be comfortable clergy intent on protecting their own lives and privilege – get used to it, and perhaps have a go at the people who have caused this mess by their own failures and indulgence. They have been caught out. Tough for them !

No Bishop wants this sort of issues on their desks and be assured of that as the paper work is horrendous in Canon Law.
But what we are seeing is incompetent Bishops who have retired or in later years leave horrendous situations for the new Bishop.
This is two in a month for Bishop Fintan and he will do it all in the Canonical route as he has no option but to do that and he will.
The horrible issue in this case for the Bishop is Ger and Tina are going to lie through the skin of their teeth that is normal for clergy who leads double lives.
However Tina will move on and Ger will be watched like a hawk the rest of his job as it is not a Priestly vocation.

Pat, what’s this mysterious sub-plot involving compliance officers in various DWP offices in the greater Blackpool area? Are Ger and his lady friend messaging each other in code this way?

Like

Worst case scenario. Ger had an affair with an adult woman. He is not the first priest to do this; but judging by the newer priests he may be the last (with a woman).

Historically the church might forgive a repentant priest and move on, like a forgiving wife. This is perfectly legitimate as an outcome.

Another historical outcome was the priest might leave the priesthood following contemplation, like Ger’s formator did.

Mature reflection needs time, space, privacy and calm. It does not need blogging.

I think I agree with a lot of what you say, Holy Goat. A priest *may* have broken his vows of celibacy and chastity, things are in the open and decisions need to be made. He isn’t the first priest potentially to do this; any alleged partner isn’t the first person to have a relationship with a priest. The situation is sad for all concerned.
With ordinary believers, similar sadnesses occur. Through the Sacrament of Reconciliation, they receive appropriate pastoral care and guidance along with not a little mercy. If those involved in this situation are at fault, I hope they receive similar compassion, pastoral care and mercy.
My issue comes with the Church’s tone to the laity where some priests and certainly the Vatican hector and damage the laity by insisting aggressively on standards of ‘rectitude’ that are hard to achieve for anyone without much sign of compassion. I’ve sat through homilies on homosexuality, contraception and abortion where I’ve felt angry, less about the teaching than the Pharisaical tone and manner in which it is delivered. What damage is caused to a young teenager who thinks he’s gay and everyone is going to hate him? Or a woman who may have felt forced to end her pregnancy? Or a couple using contraception because they can’t have another child? Are they in receipt of compassion or the mercy of God? Or are their wounds reopened every time they listen to this sort of thing? The rather mixed messages now from Pope and the CDF don’t serve to help.
We are asked to feel compassion for situations like this priest and this woman are said to find themselves in. Do you know, I think we do. But somehow that compassion needs to be two way. The best priests know that with the wisdom of time and experience. Life is not straightforward.
A far healthier church would be one in which the challenge of living a good life was talked about in inclusive terms, and one which was acknowledged by all to be just as hard for priests as the people in the pews. Beautiful ideals were promoted alongside a healthy and realistic understanding that they are just that and all we can really hope to do is our best with the hand we are dealt. Above all, though Peter may have the keys to the kingdom, it does not mean that the Petrine Church has the right to decide for God who can or can’t be let in to be with God.
If that were the message and the experience of being a believer and going to Mass, I suspect this blog would be out of business as the attitude of all of us would be more healthy and we’d feel very different about pointing the finger as no one was pointing them from the altar at us.
My thoughts any way.

Like

Jesus is everywhere, especially in your heart. Professional standards in the church are appalling. A young solicitor in England was struck off this week for “dishonestly” signing three Land Registry documents in her colleague’s name. There was no financial loss to the clients. She was young, inexperienced, and had not even qualified when she signed the documents. If she had put PP in front of the signature she may still have been allowed to continue in the profession.
Six years of training down the drain and publicly humiliated by the judgement being reported in the Gazette for all to read. Yet a priest can be dishonest by breaking his promises of celibacy, playing one woman off against the other, abusing his spiritual paternity and yet still be allowed to continue in ministry. The church has no idea of what professional standards are. Young solicitors and doctors and accountants have the fear of being ‘struck off’ by the regulator drummed into them right from the start of their training. The same has to happen in Seminary where there should be zero tolerance of any sort of dishonesty. After ordination if a priest acts dishonestly then they should be laicized and the judgement made available for all to read. If we expect our solicitors, medics and accountants to act honestly and in our best interests then can we not expect the same of our priests?

It just seems that we are supposed to put up with poor behaviour and bad performance, lack of professional ability and a whole range of other inadequacies simply because they are priests ! I wonder do they even know about, even less undergo, performance and professional appraisal ? I guess the nearest they get to that is, do they turn up to say Mass, no matter how inadequately? Oh, sorry, I forgot, it doesn’t matter how they perform and at what level because of “ex opere operato”, and similar shit to excuse them from having to do anything well ! Our priest is an idiot and a tit and is completely useless and good for nothing. But, we are saddled with him, and told that we are lucky to have a priest to say Mass. Yeah, thanks….!!

Like

Yes, their being priests is a pass for almost any kind of behaviour on their part. It is what Thomas Becket insisted upon: that offending Catholic clerics be tried in Church courts for criminal conduct rather than in the king’s courts; the latter always dealt more leniently with clerics.

Like

I do think an important aspect is being missed here, which has come up on this blog before only in the context of women in relationships with priests.
The priest will always put his ‘vocation’ before the woman. I have read of some women who are content to put up with this treatment but unless it is very clear between you that you are having a fling and nothing else, you will always be second fiddle. Even if he tells you he would marry you if he could. And if you get pregnant you will see his true colours.
