Poor awareness of disabilities issues here cos it’s a podcast.

Don’t you understand?

Any chance of a transcription here🤔

In the name of God, how long does it take for the ‘penny to drop’ for clerics to be enlightened on this issue! It beggars belief. What’s the betting protecting the reputation of the Church was paramount in 1975 simply because there was a potential tsunami of other cases in Diocesan closets at home and abroad.

Like

It was totally self-indulgent and all about him. He shouldn’t have been allowed to treat the Holy Sacrifice as his personal final concert.

Like

Was there a possibility of him being… well, let’s just say, discussed on the blog hence his departure? I wonder.

Like

His departure must have been uncontroversial and without scandal otherwise the Bishop and VG would not have permitted him to celebrate a final mass. Anyhow he has his youth ahead of him, seems a nice guy, and will no doubt go on to lead a happy and fulfilling life. May God bless him.

It is a programme called Divine renovation it is costly but some parishes are buying it.
Needs stopped it is worse than World Youth Day.

Fr James MacKay had a licentiate in canon law. That is the second good looking canonist to leave Brentwood diocese. Fr Adrian Bell was also a looker and a canon lawyer.

Like

Well it could not have been a relationship with a man as he was a signatory to The Telegraph letter “the Penal effects of same-sex marriage” opposing its introduction. But then …

Like

He’s fathered a child perhaps he should have put celibacy first before his teenage style social media

So was Keith Patrick O’Brien at every turn him and his chums was being repulsive to the LGBT people.

Like

I see. So he had signed a letter condemning other relationships, but has now fathered a child, having broken his vow of celibacy.

Like

WOW what a shocker actually brought me to tears oh my so moving.
40 years of age and making life changing decisions and what a waste of talent and a Canon lawyer.
Well a BIG loss to Brentwood and he has walked away with NO scandal and most likely never return maybe a COE role for him.
it is annoying with we have Guilty Clergy who hang on with double standards and criminal convictions who will not walk away.
May God protect Father James MacKay.

I don’t think the relationship is with a woman, somehow.
When did Evo praise songs at Mass become a thing?

Enjoyed listening to this. I do think the presence of a struggle does indicate that someone is pursuing God’s will. Might explain why so many of these clerics have such an easy time of it. may God continue to bless the humble turtle who stuck his neck out and inspire others with the confidence to do the same.

@ 4.17 pm I sincerely hope he has not fathered a child! If so, that man is a shitty hypocrite and those were nothing but crocodile tears. How could he condemn same-sex marriage but was quite prepared to break his own solemn promise of celibacy and indulge in sexual relations outside of marriage. If the bishop knew that there was no way he should have let him say a final mass.

The Bishop Alan Williams allowed him to say the Mass because he was struggling with his vocation and Celibacy.
He said at the end of the mass he was taking time out from active Ministry.
So if the rumours are true and he is going to be a Daddy he will not be back.
But as usual it will need to go through the canonical procedure and who know it better than a Canon Lawyer.
He should have said he is resigning that would make easier for everyone but no he said taking time out.
Sad for the Bishop and this Canonical procedure.

Like

We don’t know if he’s going to be a daddy, it is just a rumour. Perhaps Bp Pat will make enquiries.

I liked the interview + Pat. A good, if brief, synopsis, of many key points frequently highlighted on your blog. Have you any book recommendations on The Old Catholic Church? 👍

Like

When I select your link, all I get is a list of podcasts – and each time I select one it just gives me another list. How can I get this to work?

Like

We will never go back to the old Catholic Church.
We are a Church of Renewal based on the Eucharist and not on vestments or lace and gloves.
The Eucharist is the centre of the faith not buildings or people and the love and charity to others.
Nothing can stand still we have to move with the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
Faith must be paramount.

Like

I think possibly you misunderstand what “Old Catholic” is. It’s not Roman Catholic traditionalism. In fact, the Old Catholic Churches of the Union of Utrecht is very progressive and not addicted to lace, etc.

Like

Bishop Pat, just speaking for myself, but would you ever recommend books that you have read that have helps you regarding things like:
Prayer
Reading the Bible
The Sacraments
Theologians you like
Child abuse crisis and just books about the Catholic Church which expose hypocrisy and corruption (I like Yallop and Martel)
Books about Saints you like.
I enjoy it when posters here recommended books as I find the blog helpful in many and varied ways and heads up on books etc is part of the fun of visiting the blog.
Thanks for the blog I think it’s grreat – if only more Bishops and priests were so open to frank and honest discussion
Wishing you a lovely Holy Week and a Happy Easter.

Did anybody watch the program on BBC 4 on the monastery in Leicestershire – Mount St Bernard I think?
They buried 2 monks but they were buried without a coffin! Yikes!!
Some of the monks seemed gay and effeminate – many were old and were looking forward to dying – they seems to be living to die as if the goal of faith is to die and go to heaven – is it?
They seemed to enjoy 3 meals a day and the routine – they were into beer but not sure how’s that going – bet they paid a tidy sum for brewery consultants and branding – rich benefactor who seemed to think that donation and his mates prayers (a monk) would see him good at the pearly gates – older monks tired, jaded and literally dying to cast off the mortal coil.
Quite sad really – made me think how many are gay and frustrated – also they talked about God like New Age gurus – transcendent and unknowable as opposed to a personal relationship etc more like Buddhist monks not Christian – no one mentioned Jesus like Jesus was a naughty word – God was fine though but more like God is so unknowable what’s the point!!
Abbot seemed gay but together gay and clearly liked leading a group of old men.
My advice – the brewery idea is crazy – check out Bru Dog – the Abbot did a sales pitch at the launch it was awful like drinking beer is cool – no shit Sherlock – sell the building make a mint – downsize and spend the money on social care fees – cuz the future is old men needing nursing and social care – young monks able bodied nursing assistants and labourers – trust me the monastery is A Place For Old Men.

You are utterly cynical and judgemental. There was so much to praise about their life.

Like

Yes, I watched the programme.
I think monastics were traditionally buried without a coffin- not sure.
Is being gay a problem? I wonder if you are being mischievous asking if the goal of faith is to die and go to heaven? Christians are called to be Saints (See Romans 1:7) ‘Union with God’ or ‘Sanctity’ or ‘Intimacy with God’, as in Divine Union-i.e. Kingdom Consciousness (See: St. John of The Cross-St. Teresa of Avila- Carmelite Tradition). God is unknowable= (Mysterium tremendum et fascinans) See; Rudolph Otto book, ‘The Idea of the Holy’. Finally, is Jesus not present in the Eucharist- The Blessed Sacrament? Mass is at the centre of a monks day.
Have a little bit of trust and faith in God going forward!

How in Hades can one love a god who is ‘unknowable?

No wonder atheists have such ease in their efforts to debunk Christianity.

God is unknowable. Yes. And you thought you had reduced God to a finite creature like your pet dog. No wonder your relationship with God doesn’t transform your life.

Good evening Pat,
I ‘ve just listened to ur Podcast Interview with Andy Taylor. Within a short timeframe u gave a very honest assessment of abuse cases in the Church , past and present, and the many pitfalls therein.
U also spoke very honestly about ur own struggles, and the difference that good counselling made to your life.
The biggest challenge I have faced as a celibate, is that there is no other person who truly knows me. A loving partnership at least may offer the possibility of secure disclosures of a person’s deepest emotions and thoughts.
So many Clergy I think suffer from an inability to truly Express themselves, and that in itself can create a neurosis , which may manifest itself in an addictive behaviour/ depression.
Just a few thoughts on the back of the podcast.
Keep well.

I like Pat’s allusion, in the podcast, of non-abusing Romanist priests as ‘good Germans’ in face of child-rape/molestation in the Church: those priests who, like ordinary Germans during the Nazi tyranny, kept their heads down to avoid bringing trouble upon themselves. One Romanist, on another matter, explained this moral cowardice pithily to Pat when he said why he hadnt, as Pat later suggested, told his annoying bishop or archbishop to ‘f**k off’: ‘

‘Because he pays my wages.’

That short and pedestrian remark tells much about Romanist priests: about where their moral loyalty really lies. Not with Christ; that’s for sure. But absolutely with mammon.

When you see a Romanist in his collar, you don’t see a fearless ambassador for Christ, but a moral wimp who relies on the illusion of such. It is why these pretend Christians went to extraordinary, and criminal, lengths to conceal the rape of innocent children by paedophile priests: the illusion was all they ever had.

And they knew it.😕

I’m not sure you can deduce that I am ‘utterly cynical and judgemental’ from my post – for sure there are times when I’m cynical and judgemental and times when I’m not – you know ‘-a time to hate and a time to love (Ecclesiastes 3) – your right there were somethings to praise but I’m not a TV critic – this is a blog they were my overarching thoughts – and I repeat a monastery is a place for old men and the program did little if anything to make me change my mind. Perhaps you could enlighten me?

There were a few younger ones; more than I would have expected to be honest. You need men who have been tested in the religious life to guide the younger ones. It looked a very wholesome community to me. I would love the BBC to make a file on the extraordinary abbot of Farnborough an his community or indeed Abbot “BB” Purcell and his escapades. The Abbot of Mount St Bernard seemed very able, intelligent and respected by his community. I was not surprised that he was chosen (soon after the programme was made) to lead a diocese.

Just one of your points requires correction. The Abbott does not lead a diocese. He leads the Territorial Prelature of Trondheim which, in case you are ignorant about these matters, is defined as a missionary area. Yes, he is a Bishop. You managed to get that information correct. No, he does not lead a diocese. Of course, you now have precise, accurate information.

6.52 pm excuse me for not knowing the correct canonical term. It is still a particular church, and the aforementioned abbots still reprobates.

You ask is being gay a problem? I’d say that depends. It’s problematic if your a professed celibate and acting out your homosexuality- I’d say it’s problematic if your gay on the one hand and homophobic on the other. And I’d say it’s a problem if the prevailing view is it’s problematic to ordain a gay man – McCarrick, Baum,O’Brien, Weakland, Marcinkus, and innumerable honourable mentions on this blog shed light that it’s a problem – now are you asking (I wasn’t sure) is being gay a proble for me? Well as a gay man I can assure you it isn’t – in fact I’m a rather celebratory gay – you know Gay and Proud but then again I’m not a Catholic priest whose made a public declaration of celibacy and a vow – are you?
Remind me again – did we just meet at the crossroads of deeply patronising and overtly didactic – if we did have a little bit of faith in God ‘going forward.’

Like

it’s also problematic if your a professed celibate and acting out your heterosexuality. Some people are obsessed with homosexuals. Get over it!
