THE ENNIS SCANDAL AND DUTY OF CARE.

The ongoing Ennis scandal involving Fr Ger Fitzgerald – accused of breaking his celibacy promise and Yvonne – his alleged mistress now forced into hiding out of fear – obviously has a profound human dimension.

Both are human beings and both are suffering in different ways – and both are feeling threatened and vulnerable.

My attention was drawn to Ger celebrating Mass on Holy Thursday evening at 8.30 pm. He came across as a man who had not slept well, was dishevelled, spoke hesitantly and looked as if he was not really present.

On the other hand, Yvonne is being treated like a leper in Ennis, has come under intense criticism and threat and is in hiding.

It looks as if Ennis, or certain parts of it, are supporting and comforting the erring priest and condemning the woman for telling her story.

Ennis is treating Yvonne with the judgement and condemnation with which the Jews treated the woman caught in adultery and Mary Magdalen.

Ger is 40.

Yvonne is 33.

Ger has a public promise of celibacy.

Yvonne is a single woman.

The Church, with Ger’s permission, has appointed Ger to be the model and teacher of morals to the people of Ennis.

Yvonne is a private, previously unknown individual who does not represent any religion and does not preach or make moral pronouncements.

WHERE THE BUCK STOPS:

Fintan Monahan

No criminal offence has been committed in this case. So there is no role for the police.

The “crime” is moral, pastoral and canonical.

The “authority” in this case is the bishop, Fintan Monahan.

He is also the person with the highest duty of care as Ger is his priest and Yvonne is his daughter in God.

Fintan has a number of things he must do”

1. He must look after Yvonne who was sexually used by one of his priests.

I asked Fintan to care for Yvonne last Monday

“Dear Fintan,

I have kept in touch with Yvonne, Fr Ger Fitzgerald’s ex lover.
She is very afraid just now.
Yvonne is afraid she will be targetted physically.
She has not left home since the scandal broke and is a mental wreck.
I know you are conscious of your obligation in Canon Law to care for the laity.
Could you consider informing the Garda of her vulnerability?
Your brother bishop,
Pat’

2. He must ask Ger to step aside pending a canonical process.

3. He must look after Ger’s welfare while he is off the mission.

From me to Fintan yesterday morning.

4. He must initiate a canonical procedure against Ger.

AND

Ger should NOT be presiding over public Mass and ceremonies while this cloud is hanging over his head.

Fintan is ‘doing it the canonical way’? 🤔 Hmm? Isn’t this what got Romanists into massive bother in the first place?

+ Fintan does not have a clue what to do with Carey and Ger so lost in the plot.
Thinks Carey could be back in a parish soon but he will have a sexual criminal record for 15 years so where can he go.
He knows Ger is lying to him but where is constructive evidence.
+ Fintan’job will be on the line or see out the next 21 years in Killaloe so stand up and be counted Fintan.

You can not put a priest who was beating his bishop in the driving seat of his car in a public place close to families and children back in public ministry. Perhaps a convent could take him? Or hide him away in a monastery. Even if he left priesthood he would struggle to find employment as he is a sex offender.

The minute Good Friday is over you revert to unnecessary judgement. The more I read your blog the less I care about hetero and homosexual priests who break their promise of celibacy. The problem is the retention of an unnecessary rule. We all break promises and some of our decisions are reasonable. Focus on the undesirable retention of an unnecessary rule and those like McCarrick who are abusive, not on those who cannot live by it. Do you really want the thousands+ of priests throughout the world who break their promise to be dismissed?

Like

Those aggrieved by the so-called unnecessary rule signed up to that rule voluntarily as grown adults, aged in their mid-20s at least. It is not compulsory to stay or to expect the laity to fund a double life. As the Bible says, if the trumpet gives an uncertain sound, who will listen to its call?

The Romanists couldn’t play anything but cacophony; they’re useless. Jesus certainly could find no use for them, which is why he did not intend priesthood of any description.

But hey! Jesus is dealing with these parasites on humanity now.

Better late than never, eh Jesus?😕

You are failing to situate the issue in its historical context. Clerical celibacy as a universal discipline in the Latin church is no longer an absolute requirement of ordination to the presbyterate. There are many married Latin-rite Catholic priests who were ministers or priests in non-Catholic denominations.

Secondly, celibacy is a discipline not a dogma which began to be enforced in earnest from c.1073-1120. Popes were married as late as 868 and perhaps much later, when the wife and daughter of the pope were murdered.

You appear to hold a static view of discipline rather than a dynamic one.

Like

9.57 – your reference to taking one’s hand off the plough is out of context. The passage in question is referring to those who became Christians and who no longer are. Are you suggesting that this predicate describes the person/people you have in mind?

Like

8:49 You are forgetting that as a rule the priests who appear here are not merely breaking their promise but engaging in sexual behaviour which would be problematic without a promise of celibacy:
Chatting to former pupils on Grindr.
Having pictures taken and shared of actual sex.
Sex on an altar, etc.
If these were clergy of, say, the United Methodist denomination which doesn’t require celibacy and is affirming of gay relationship, these would still be out of line.

Like

Please read my comment again. I said that I did not agree with the abusive breach of the rule about celibacy. In some countries it is the norm for priests to have a lover. Nobody takes any notice. As for sex before marriage – you dam the majority of the population of young and not so young people if you take a dismissive view.

Like

Exactly. If they were married laymen their carry on would also breach the moral law and in Catholic terms would be mortal sins.

Like

I think you will find denominations which do not require celibacy still require clergy to play by the denominations behavioural standards in their own lives. You may compare Byzantine rite Catholic priests. Places where it is allegedly normal for priests to have lovers are places where a free for all is to be expected.
Scripture and tradition are very plain that sex is between one man and one woman in marriage.

Scripture knows nothing of sexual orientation. It assumes all are heterosexual and those that are attracted to their own sex are peverted. Tradition is slowly playing catch up and taking on board the insights of a variety of disciplines such as psychology, philosophy, anthropology, sociology to name a few.

Regrettably, you have not understood.
None of the authors of sacred scripture had any understanding of the concept of sexual orientation. The only thing they knew was same-sex sexual attraction and activity being experienced by what they considered to be heterosexuals.

“Positivist” is the other word I was searching for in connection with yesterday’s topic. And reifying (the word is the thing) and ad hominising.
The idea seems to have got entrenched of late that “communion” is solely a bread and wine ceremony with spiritual benefit spuriously attached – whereas in God’s eyes it is not even mainly that – Jesus was saying the OT custom foreshadows what is supposed to be Holy Spirit help to us through each other (which is not taught by Rome’s sodalities and orders and their lookalikes) (like other children I would have been ready to accept the truth but it didn’t come to me through Church).
And that Roman vocation and following Christ are solely and irrevocably ordination / nunhood. (I think Roman clergy should rotate between being clergy and not being clergy for alternating periods: doing a person out of their occupation once they read deaconship, or before, is cruel).
“A priest for ever according to the order of Melchizedek” does NOT mean ANY clergy at all at all, in Bible meanings. Sadly even relatively good popes have let this lie slip. It ONLY means Jesus – NOT any of the Alter JPs. That we (including laity without the slightest vocation) “are” Christ has substance to it but is an analogy (non exact similarities).
A Glory Be said for former disappointed wouldbe believing children. Remember the Marto children, Carlo Acutis, Dominic Savio were lay children and did good without having the slightest vocation (in Roman terms).

@10:43: Sorry I’m not sufficiently well informed on differences of all world major religions to make any knowledgeable comment. But I do recognise many similarities whereby self selected religious leaders worldwide make use of inherent human insecurities to promote their own self serving “redemptive” abilities, …..with the invariable and resultant material benefits to themselves.
If I may here correct some other recent comments: ( which serve as good examples of mistruths, deliberate or otherwise, and/or stupidity) you can decide.
I was in seminary in ROI 1962 – 1968, taught in N. Ire. 1968, University in Scotland, then Post Grad professional qualification diplomas at Uni England. Contrary to one ill informed, or mischievous comment, I did not flee Ireland for superior education in England. It was only after Uni elsewhere, and thus able to make comparison with my former Irish seminary did I fully realise the poverty of those seminarian “studies” and for what they were: unquestioning assimilation by rote learning of RCC dogma. Their only value, to best of my recollection, were the central tenets of moral theology studies based on ethical compassionate behaviour as espoused in the new testament. Thus in this respect did I make a criticism of my seminarian tertiary education in Ireland.
In respect of my blog criticisms of religion, the above realisation also informs a perception that had I stayed on and been ordained, then, just as when I was a seminarian, I would have been regarded by “the faithful” (my parishioners) as a paragon of knowledge and virtue. In reality I now recognise just how ill informed and unprepared I would then have been to act as a pastor. And I now recognise that lots of my then contemporaries ordained at that time, will have continued with little subsequent significant development. I have met some with the same mindset and perceptions from 50 years ago!
In my subsequent professional career I was required to have regular intensive in service training both on professional and managerial development issues. By contrast, I see little evidence that RCC clerical development and training has had similar staff development strategies. I question if many RCC clerics currently in significant senior roles, certainly here in Ireland, have had proper professional development since ordination, or, in all probability, any external developmental input . The RCC myth of “ontological change” upon ordination is no substitute for ongoing objective external questioning of one’s role, performance and effectiveness as a supportive pastor.

Pat, do you ever think that Catholic moral teaching was used to keep women in check? By that I meant that clerics saw them as like Eve, as temptresses who would leave hearth and home and abandon children if another man came along? So piety and the moral law kept them on the leash by cultivating a guilty conscience?
How many women over the centuries have been kept at home with unsuitable and cruel husbands who used morality and dogma as a form if coercive control, rather like the position in much of Islam today.
The whole irony, of course, is that clerics aren’t tempted by Eve but by Adam.

I don’t want to be unnecessarily harsh here, but Ger’s seeming turmoil will be borne out of self-pity and the realisation that he has been caught out. I doubt if it is really anything more than that, although he is probably undergoing some personal pain at this time. That does not mean that his bishop should just roll over and pat him on the head and tell him everything is going to be alright and he will be able to get back to his normal in time. The bishop needs to apply some tough love, which is applied in every other part of life, and get this man to realise that he has made a mistake, admit his mistake, and look to a way forward which most likely will include moving on to another life and laying down ministry. Ger’s response is the typical infantile, arrested maturity response that you get from most clergy who get caught out, namely that they are the victim and everybody should feel sorry for them. Well, the reality is that life and the world does not work like that, and difficult as it might be for him personally, he has to recognise the reality, deal with it and move on. As part of this, of course, his bishop and priest pals should be putting in some measures to ensure that he is appropriately overseen – if indeed they have the wit to do that or can even be bothered. What they should not do, which I fear is what they will be doing, is quietly telling Ger that everything will be alright and that in time he can move back in to his old life. They have to realise, all of them, that things have changed. We won’t put up with that anymore. Nether should they. It’s tough for all concerned, I know, but Ger should have kept his pecker in his pants and his tongue in his mouth. He only has himself to blame. It could, however, be a real turning point for him and he could use it as a way of growing up, taking responsibility, and moving on to a life that is open, honest and transparent rather than his cosseted clerical life of duplicity, lies, and parallel life I hope so.

Pat, whatever happened to Killaloe priest, Fr Anthony McMahon? He had been a British Army chaplain who was recalled to the diocese by Lugs. This plea fell on deaf ears, somewhat surprisingly given the size of Lugs’s lugs.

Anthony came back in a huff, did a short stint as a PP and then was announced as having a leave of absence when the next clerical changes came out.

I think the lack of financial independence is a major factor in keeping many of the clergy in check: behoven to their bishop or religious superior.
Others here have voiced the same opinion. What do YOU think?

Like

There have been quite a few Irish guys in the UK military chaplaincies, especially in the Army. The pay and living is good, the pension good, and gives them independence afterwards. I’d say about a half to a third of military chaplains when they leave don’t go back to their dioceses but retire themselves on some dubious grounds, and live quite nicely, than you very much. Mgr Alker of Liverpool lives very nicely and pops up every now and again so he can wear his purple, but is supposed to be retired on health grounds. I’d say he’s no more than 65. However, why not ? What is it with this nonsense of dying with your boots on or maybe retiring at 75, still with strings attached ? Priests I know make a virtue of it by saying they are committed, but the reality is that they have no option, no financial independence, so they have to stay and remain part of the mediaeval patronage system of the diocese. And like everything else they make a virtue of their misfortune and impecuniousness and try to spiritualise it – hand to the plough, not looking back kind of stuff ! Poor dears. It is interesting that where a priest does have options, very often he will exercise them. And why not ? I’m just waiting for that pension and that inheritance to kick in, and I’ll exercise my options, I think. A case of high blood pressure maybe, or emotional turmoil, or gout….? I’ll butter up the GP to give me a letter. Happy days….! Why should I go on and on, putting up with more and more work, taking on more parishes as they amalgamate, more and more shit, more and more complaining parishioners, more and more of a bishop who won’t even talk to us unless he is compromised in some way by the contact, and acts like a Chief Executive rather than a spiritual brother and father ? Why should I be taking a pay cut when my pay is pretty miserable anyhow ? Why should I just sit around until somebody makes a spurious complaint and be suspended and made to feel that I’m automatically guilty ? Why should I have no protections at all ? I can find other ways to serve Christ and fulfil a ministry. But, the bishop thinks he’s got us by the short and curlies, and he has, but not for much longer….

The LIGHT of Easter is a precious grace and I wish it for everyone. if it was meant as passive aggressive, I wouldn’t have wished Pat an Easter prayer! What’s wrong with you. May I suggest you watch Knock Brasilia for the Easter Vigil..
